Solaris 8 Install on Ultra 5

Hello,
I have an Ultra 5 with SunOS 5.8 installed. There is one 9Gb internal disk. I am installing Solaris 8 on the Ultra5 and get the following errors repeatedly for different Requested Blocks. They start after the "- Reboot After Installation?" page is confirmed..(last step on disk 1 of install cds). The system is meant to configure its disk here but this error starts.....
WARNING:/pci@1f,0/pci@1,1/ide@3/sd@2,0 (sd0):
Error for Command: read(10)     Error Level: Retryable/Fatal
Requested Block:166735     Error Block:166735     Vendor:LG
Serial Number:     Sense Key:Media Error
ASC: 0x2 (no seek complete), ASCQ: 0x0, FRV: 0x0
all suggestions welcome,
g

It looks like you're trying to boot from cdrom, or the cdrom is involved here as "vendor: LG" is usually the cdrom. What does probe-ide, devalias and printenv boot-device show you at the ok prompt? It is unusual for (sd0) to be sd@2,0

  • Solaris 8 install on ultra 10

I'm trying to do a custom install. Towards the ends of the process (i.e. after CD 2 of 2 & Supplement CD have been used) I get a banner about Enterprise 10000 & then a prompt for info about the speed of my CPU. The info requested includes:
    1. what is the interconnect frequency?
    2. What is the clock multiplier?
Then I get request for info relating to the SSP (e.g what platform is on the box & is this the main SSP for the system)..
Does anyone know what this all means? Are there any relevant docs?

    boot -s
pkgrm all packages that have SUNWssp in them or,
Re-install, starting with disk 1 of 2. If you need to use anything from the "Supplemental" CD use the custom install from that CD and only select what you need.
Using the Installer CD to begin your installation will select all SSP (System Service Processor for the E10k) packages if you answer yes to additional software.

  • Ultra 5 won't boot after Solaris 8 install

Hello. After installing Solaris 8 on an ultra 5, the system won't reboot. After trying many permutations of the install, including a bare minimum and the whole shebang, it became clear that the system always hung at the same spot in the boot process (from a boot -v), immediately following the line:
cpu0: SUNW, UltraSPARC IIi (upaid 0 impl 0x12 ver 0x13 clock 270 MHz)
Has anyone seen this problem before? We reset the boot PROM with set-defaults from the ok prompt and that made no difference. This machine ran fine under Solaris 7, so I don't think it's a hardware failure. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Can't be the OS if the disk doesn't show any activity.
I can't tell from your post if you're using a screen/keyboard or a serial console? Have you removed the keyboard and attached a serial terminal to serial port A? Several types of hardware failure will output errors there even if the failure occurs before the framebuffer is initialized (memory errors are common).

  • Problems making Solaris 10 install disk for x86

    I have an Ultra 40 M2. I made a boot/install DVD disk with Solaris 10 for x86.
The system just doesn't recognize it at all, like there is nothing in the DVD drive.
    What am I doing wrong?
The DVD drive does recognize other DVDs, just not the Solaris 10 install one (I created two install disks to no avail)

How are you burning the DVD. What software/options.
    Theres a howto here

  • Solaris 9 Install Fails at Console Window

I am attempting to install Solaris 9 on an Ultra 10.
Ran boot cdrom from OK prompt, using the install directory.
Got to the selection of language fine, (selected English)
CDE started up, and then got a console window.
It displays the standard install stuff, up to the first prompt:
    Can c0t2d0s1 be used ...
The mouse does not respond, and I can not change focus to the console window. I have tried ALT-Tab, ALT-ESC, F10, ALT-Up arrow, ALT-Down arrow, and many more keyboard combinations.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Craig

i want to report I found my problem. I had checked the mouse cable to the keyboard, and it was fine. Today I checked the cable from the keyboard to the box, and the center pin was pushed in.
Pulled it out and now the mouse responds.
Bad troubleshooting on my part, eh?

  • Solaris 10 issue on ultra 5

After a full installation of Solaris 10, dtlogin will not start up after wat it seems a couple of retries to find a
correct video mode. During the installation process X started up just fine so it is not a hardware problem.
I will look into this problem but would appreciate if someone can shed some light on this.
    Regards

I made an installation with the lasst beta of solaris 10 on a blade 1000 wich worked fine with solaris 8 and 9, then after installing the beta X didn`t start.
I passed the machine to a customer of mine who urgently needed a Sun and he reported they were not able to start X. I think they donwgraded to Solaris 9 to work
Then I used days later the final release of Solaris 10 on a Ultra 60 with Elite3d. Same problem, correct installation using the graphic enviroment, but at restart X didn`t started. I even formatted and reinstalled ... nothing
I always had X works at the first try on different hardware (from sparc 5 to Blade 1000) using from solaris 6 to solaris 9.
    Now X really doesn`t work...
Some one can offer a suggestion on how to fix this?
Should not X correctly run without any trick on standard Sun hardware when the installation was succesfull?
Which additional setting are necessary to let X works under Solaris 10 on standard Sun hardware?
    Thank you.

    few doubts
Is it possible to go ahead for IDM installation without having ultra search enabled in database?
any other way around that i can have ultra search?
after applying patchset on basic version(10201) i am installing ultra search from basic version (as patchset doesnt have companion dir) on upgraded version(10204) causing this issue?
    Thanks,

my guess was correct. the issue was last point.
After applying patchset on basic version(10201) i am installing ultra search from basic version (as patchset doesnt have companion dir) on upgraded version(10204) causing this issue?
it was resolved by uninstalling DB, and again installing from basic version (10201) then went to companion CD, installed ultrasearch on same oracle_home. it got installed without any issue.
then upgraded to 10204. then created DB, and enabled ultrasearch by DBCA.
let me know in case of more details required.

  • Moving disks while maintaining Solaris 10 install from one v240 to another.

    Hi,
    I want to move a Solaris 10 install from a sunfire v240
with a single cpu to another sunfire v240 with dual cpu's. Here are the
details of the hosts as well as configuration.
I have 2 sunfire v240's. One has a single 1 Ghz cpu and the second has
dual 1.5 Ghz cpu. I want to move the disks of the single cpu host to
the host with dual cpu's. I want to keep the installed version of
Solaris 10 intact. The installation of Solaris is split across 2
mirrored disks, i.e. 4 disks in total. I am using Suns volume manager
for mirroring and also have one files system mirrored with zfs.
The questions I have are the following:
    1) Can I simply shut down the servers and swap the disks to the
destination host, in the same disk slots? The controllers the disks are
on line up and are the same between the 2 hosts.
    2) Will the kernel pickup the changes moving from a single 1 Ghz cpu to
dual 1.5. Ghz cpu's with out any problems? Will the kernel pickup the
faster cpu's speeds. i.e. will it know it is now running dual 1.5. Ghz
cpu opposed to a single 1 Ghz?
    3) Would we have to break the mirroring on the OS before shutting it
    down?
    4) As another option, instead of swapping disks, could we swap the
cpus? Move the dual 1.5. Ghz cpu's to the other host? Will the
motherboards read the updates of the cpu or are their jumper settings we
    would need to update?
    Thanks for your help.

    Box A
    Sparc Solaris 9, Oracle 10g
    Box B
    Solaris 10 x86, Oracle 11g
I know there are many factors, but I'm pretty new to both unix & oracle, so I >needed some general steps to get me started. You have many options.
Since you're in 10g, Have the Target Database created in Solaris 10 x86, Oracle 11g.
    you can use,
RMAN - Cross platform Transportable Tablespaces.
    Datapump Export and Datapump import.

  • Solaris 10 Install Hangs at 15% on my HP DL 585?

Solaris 10 Install Hangs at 15% on my HP DL 585
I have taken out all the additional extra cards so I am left with the basic box, it has been configured to run in Raid 1 so my four disks become two.
I can still get it to bring up a shell and do other things, but the installer just appears not to want to go pass 15%
    Help?

Which version of Solaris and how much memory do you have in the system.

  • Minimize and maximize Solaris 10 installed on VM virtual Box.

How can I minimize and maximize Solaris 10 installed on VM virtual Box.
    Thanks
    Paulo

Solaris is working just fine. Everything is ok. now since I open Solaris via VM Virtual box, the Solaris main page fills only half of the monitor. I can minimize/maximize the Virtual Box. But Solaris dimensions are fix and doesn't change. This leaves me a little room to open applications on Solaris. I had the same problems with my Ubuntu, by installing adds-on it was fixed. For Solaris I installed “Guest additions”, didn’t help.
    Thanks

  • Adding packages from solaris 8 install disks

I need Solaris Make for Solaris 8. I have installed Solaris 8 off of downloaded Solaris 8 install disks. I apparently forgot to include Solaris Make in the install and now need to add it. When I copy the pkg SUNWxcu4t (the pkg for make and scc) and pkgadd it it claims installation is sucessful but still I have no make. It is supposed to install to /usr but there is no make there.
    What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks

Ok I have all of my compilling isuse resolved!
Just in case anyone else browsing this forum has the same problems here is what I have learned:
    These are the relevent Packages:
for tools (ar, sccs, lex, yacc, make, nm, truss, ld, as)
    SUNWbtool, SUNWsprot, SUNWtoo
    for libraries & headers:
    SUNWhea, SUNWarc, SUNWlibm, SUNWlibms
    SUNWdfbh, SUNWcg6h
    for ucb compat:
    SUNWsra, SUNWsrh
You definatly need to use Solaris make (found in SUNWsprot), Solaris ar (found in SUNWbtool),
gnu tar, and gnu cc both from sunfreeware.com (I love pkg-get ^_^)
either add /opt/sfw/bin/ to your path or put a dynamic link for gcc into /usr/local/bin/ I prefer the latter.
and add /usr/ccs/bin/ to your path permanently.
Thanks for your help every one.

  • Please, solaris 10 installed in my X86 computer, but do not recognize NIC

Even I get a sun NIC, I do not know hot to install driver. So I am wondering, if I install a Sun PCI NIC, does the
solaris 10 recognize the sun PCI NIC automatically? If solaris can install NIC driver by itself, I will not install NIC driver, thanks

A number of drivers for supported cards were installed by default.
Solaris will not take any additional action when you add hardware. Either you've already got the driver and it'll be recognized, or you don't. If you don't have the driver, there might be a third-party driver available that you can download and install.
Best course of action is to add devices that are on the hardware compatibility list.

  • Install Solaris 10 Sparc on Ultra 40

I am trying to install solaris 10 Sparc on an Sun Ultra 40 i386 pc. Is that able to be done. I have libraries that only work on sparc machines. Thanks for any help.

SPARC and i386 are different CPUs. They are not compatible.
You run SPARC installations on SPARC hardware, you run x86 installations on x86 hardware.
