Thanks again.Oracle acquired Sun in 2009. Sun Microsystems had already put Solaris 8 to end-of-life (EOL) status in 2007.
I have observed that Oracle retires all products in what can be described as a very assertive or aggressive manner, so as to only present current products to customers and potential customers. The company never goes backward to "what once was".
As for Solaris 8, they would have had to assign a person or a department to go through what essentially is a remanufacturing/re-marketing/re-packaging process to create ISO's from existing (but no longer sold) media, validate that the electronic files were viable, and place them onto a delivery channel. That would have been a counter-productive exercise.

How does one Create Bootable DVD from downloaded iso image in Windows?

I have a completely empty system I want to load Solaris Express on. I have access to web on a Windows XP machine and have downloaded the Solaris iso image. Using WindowsXP facilities simply copies the iso image as an intact iso image file and resulting disc is not bootable. Windows knowledge base very conveniently says that what happened to me is what happens. No obvious referral to how to do it....
A) So for a non-Windows savy person who does not want to become Windows savy (That is why I downloaded Solaris!) Where is a set of instructions on how to (inside Windows XP) "extract" an iso image to a CD / DVD disk so it will be bootable?
B) It sure would be nice if Solaris were able to be loaded onto a USB Flash drive and booted at will from any USB computer. Just plug it in and boot. Has this been done?
C) Getting a physical disk by snail mail from Sun is very slow for me.... (3 weeks and still watching the mail box...)

You probably copied the .iso file as one single very large file onto media. Instead, you can use a utility such as Roxio DVD Creator or Nero (or freeware like cdrecord) , and select the option to burn an image that already exists. No special boot options are needed, because the ISO image already contains the boot information needed.

Has this been done?With the Newboot project introduced into Solaris Express, I believe it is now possible. I'm not a USB expert, though, so cannot say for sure.

Issue burning Solaris 10 installation CD�s

Dear all,
I downloaded Solaris 10 1/06 installation-CD�s 1-5 from sun hp.
I extracted all 5 CD�s with winzip
I�m not able to burn any of these CD�s because the image-file cannot be identified by the burners I used (Nero, Ulead) in Windows XP.
Any help would be much appreciated.

if the 5 files you downloaded are named:
sol-10-u3-ga-x86-dvd-iso-a
sol-10-u3-ga-x86-dvd-iso-b
sol-10-u3-ga-x86-dvd-iso-c
sol-10-u3-ga-x86-dvd-iso-d
sol-10-u3-ga-x86-dvd-iso-e
its a DVD ISO split to 5 parts.
For windows open run and type cmd, go the the folder that contains the 5 files then type "copy /b sol-10-u3-ga-x86-dvd-iso-a + sol-10-u3-ga-x86-dvd-iso-b + sol-10-u3-ga-x86-dvd-iso-c + sol-10-u3-ga-x86-dvd-iso-d + sol-10-u3-ga-x86-dvd-iso-e solaris.iso" without the quotes this wil copy the 5 files to one file named "solaris.iso"
Now you can Burn the DVD :)

i just spent half an hour trying to get this information from the miniroot (with gunzip/lofiadm), just to realize that the miniroot probably is a rather static thing which don't change that much between the releases.
After actually thinking about the problem for a few seconds i realized that the easiest way to retrieve this information is with a simple:

Solaris 11.1 64bit Install freezing after GRUB selection

I am in the process of creating a DEV box for hosting my projects and I am wanting to install Solaris 11.1 onto a Lenovo Desktop PC .
PC Details:
Lenovo M92p Thinkcentre 3227
Intel Core i5 3rd Gen
4Gb Ram
500gb HDD

Currently the system has a OEM version of Windows 7 installed on it.
So I downloaded the latest Live image of Solaris from Oracle and burned it using Windows burn utility.
I then boot the DVD using UEFI mode and the GRUB menu displays all the various options to start the Solaris install process.
No matter which option I choose the install hangs on the black screen saying the OS version and the Copyright notice.
The text cursor is not blinking (has it crashed?)

Things I have done:
Flashed the BIOS to latest version
Tried booting solaris from a live usb
Reburned the solaris iso image
Waited an hour to see if it progresses
Things I am going to do:
Use a different ISO utility
Test if Linux can boot from PC
Any ideas?

I should have updated this thread.
Unfortunately Lenovo put a "bug" in their UEFI control that allows only "Windows" and "Red Hat Linux" to boot.
Any other OS with a string in the UEFI identifier that does not match this will not boot.
When I say it is a bug, Lenovo have in the past got a reputation for using Safe boot to limit non Windows OS's from starting on a machine.

Vmware workstation 5.5/6.x and solaris 10 upd3 (11/06) panics

Hello,
Just sending this out to see if others have seen this, I'm using VMware workstation 6.0 with the public release version of solaris 10 vmware image, patched to the latest RPC (8-15-07), so 125101-10 is the kernel in use.
the OS itself seems to operate just fine, I don't use graphical interface, so I ssh from a parent machine to get to the vmware image.
very often, when performing a cat, or like operation, I get the console message:
"vmxnet: WARNING: vmxnet0: Vxn_EncapTxBuf: 1 fragments in message, max is 1"
this causes my session to freeze and i have to restart.
This behaviour is the SAME under vmware workstation 5.5, and 6.0.
Anyone else seen this, and how to work around?

I managed to get the problem fixed by switching to vmware server 1.0.4. The I mounted the "C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Server\solaris.iso" CD-ROM. The CD-ROM contains one file, which I unzipped, and then extracted the single tar file. After reading the doc/INSTALL file I ran the setup script. I accepted all the defaults, and after the script completed things started working fine.

Cannot install Guest Additions Virtual Box

Hallo!I am a total newbie in Solaris and Virtual Box.
I have installed Solaris 10 (guest OS)via Virtual Box in XP (host OS). I would like to install other s/w in Solaris (SUNWi1cs and SUNWi15cs so that I can install Oracle 10g).
To do this,I must install Guest Additions first.I have gone to Devices ->Install Guest Additions but nothing seems to happen.I have tried to mount CD/DVD-ROM and also the Solaris.iso file but still nothing happens.
Eventually I would like to install SUNWi1cs and SUNWi15cs as below
pkgadd –d /cdrom/cdrom0/Solaris_10/Product SUNWi1cs SUNWi15cs

VMware Workstation 5 & vmware-any-any added to AUR

As it became clear from comments added to the vmware-workstation 6 package in aur i was not the only archuser that wanted to stay with workstation 5 (license isssues) i decided to make an aur package of it.
I used the pkgbuilds for vmware-workstation by miklos, romashka & pizzapunk and adapted them.
During testing the package i found i needed the vm-any-any updates to make it run with the latest kernel (as expected) , so i've made an aur package for that also.
To avoid confusion with the vmware-workstation package i've named my package vmware-ws5 .

Hello, can someone please upload or let me know who I can talk to about getting x86 ISO's for Solaris 8.x and 9.x.
I had previously downloaded them legally for free from Sun and had them in my Sun Connection profile for ages. Now they are gone and I need to get them to do patch testing and troubleshooting for the fleet of 8.x boxed I have to work on now. They run on hardware thats too weak for the Solaris 10.x branch.

Solaris 8 entered end of life last February. In just over a year it will enter phase 2 eol - no more patches, and access to existing patches only to customers with support contracts.
You should also be aware that no current SPARC hardware supports Solaris 8 (at least, not that I'm aware of). This might not be a problem if you have support contracts for your hardware. If, on the other hand, you don't have such a contract and your hardware fails, or you need extra hardware, then again you'll have to look for second hand sources like Ebay.
Perhaps you should consider moving to Solaris 9 or 10?

W2100z Supplemental 2.5 XpReburn produces non-bootable ISO in Solaris Sparc

Just posting in case helps someone else...
The XpReburn script from the W2100z Supplemental 2.5 CD is commented as being able to run on Solaris Sparc:

Found the cause of the non-bootable image was the following section of XpReburn. It was using dd and od to extract 16-bit LBA values. On Solaris Sparc it ended up reading little-endian values as big-endian, hence extracting the boot loader from the wrong part of the XP CD. To get it to work under Solaris Sparc added conv=swab twice as shown below:

Reading the submission guidelines it appears BigAdmin is for you own work:

Whereas my "hint" above is really a bug report / enhancement request for a Sun supplied script.
I only have a basic support plan so don't think I can raise a bug report.
Also:
1) The modification listed was a quick hack to get the script to work under Sparc Solaris, but which would have caused the script to generate a non-bootable ISO if run under X86 Solaris.
2) If you run the script on a ZFS filesystem you get an error that the filesystem isn't local - the script should be updated to consider a ZFS filesystem as local.
3) If the script is run on a Solaris system with two optical drives, the script fails with an error because fails to correctly read the volume name of the XP CD. Can't remember the details, but just hacked the script to work.
So, so for now will just leave the "hint" in this thread.

How to create ISO images for Solaris 10 U6 (10/08) SPARC CD 1 and DVD

The format of the bootable DVD and CD 1 of Solaris 10 U6 sparc has changed from previous Solaris 10 update's sparc media, it now seems to be more like the x86 format, can anyone provide the new/specific mkisofs command to use to recreate (modified version) a sparc bootable ISO image file of these from their "unloaded" directory paths, I'm guessing the mkisofs command is going to be similiar what's used for recreating Solaris 10 x86 DVD and CD1.

Thanks for info, when I try this mkisofs command to recreate the Sol 10 U6 CD 1 ISO image I end up 16 KB short of the original downloaded ISO size of Sol 10 U6 CD 1, the generated ISO image when burn to CD doesn't boot, I tried using both mkisofs version that comes with Sol 10 U6 & version *2.01.01a53*, here's the test I did:
mount Sol 10 U6 CD 1 as /mnt (CD 1 burned from downloaded ISO from Sun that is *512904 KB* in size)
mkisofs -G /mnt/boot/hsfs.bootblock -B ... -l -ldots -R -N -D -V SOL_10_1008_SPARC -o test.iso /mnt
Genereated ISO image file test.iso is *512888 KB* in size and doesn't boot when burned to CD with error messages:
Can't read disk label.
Can't open disk label package
ERROR: boot-read fail
Any ideas?

Solaris 10 iso

We are wanting to download Solaris 10 (actually wanting update 7 since that's what our client has, but can't find it).
We found the "download" site for sol-10-u10-ga2-sparc-dvd.iso, but when we downloaded it, we were unable to get it to boot from the iso. The error we got was "Operating System not found".
What else needs to be done to the iso to make it bootable. I had thought -- incorrectly it would appear -- that an iso is bootable...

You were attempting to install that SPARC software to a SPARC system?
... or were you attempting to install it to a system with an Intel or AMD cpu architecture?
Also, I don't think that file is directly bootable - you need to create the DVD from that ISO file.
