Solaris 8 licensing

How many CPUs can I install before I need to purchase additional license/s

The license is free to end users for use on systems with a capacity of eight or fewer CPUs. It does not allow for redistribution of the Solaris 8 software. If you are a hardware manufacturer, appliance maker, or other type of reseller, you must sign a special license with Sun to be allowed to ship the Solaris 8 software. For more information on redistribution options, please send an e-mail to [email protected]

  • VM Server for SPARC - Solaris OS Licensing

I'm about to buy a new Sun SPARC T4-1 sever. This comes with Solaris 11 and Oracle VM for SPARC. Oracle have advised me that installing Solaris 10 in place of 11 is allowed and supported.
Do I need to purchase an additional Solaris licence for each Solaris virtual machine we want to run on this server? I have tried to look this up on the Oracle website and not found any useful information in this regard.
I want to consolidate different applications and Oracle databases running on a Fire v240 running Solaris 10 and an 280r running Solaris 8 onto the new server. At present I'm undecided as to whether Zones or VM Ldoms are the best way to achieve this. If we use VM for SPARC I would probably want to run two Solaris 10 virtual machines.

Licensing and Support is per system not per VM so you wouldn't incur any extra costs adding extra VMs to an existing system that is compliant but as per https://edelivery.oracle.com/EPD/FAQ/get_form?ARU_LANG=US#e11 you'd need to contact Oracle for a categorical answer to Licensing, etc.
Note: it needn't be a choice between Zones and LDoms - you could use both, with a number of Zones within a domain...
The P2V tool might also be useful: http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E35434_01/html/E23807/ldomsp2v.html#scrolltoc

  • Solaris License

    Hi All :
I Ask about the Solaris license .... we have Sun Enterprise Server 3500 , with 2.7 OS license ..... i ask about the upgrade to Solaris 8 -9 - is it legal to upgrade it without any aditional Fees , or is it additional license we must buy it ....
    Hani Basheer
    GIS - DBA

There is no license key sent.
My last confirmation e-mail is from March 2005. It didn't contain any licensing information, but instead links to buy a service contract or service plan (Spectrum). For more recent downloads e.g. Solaris 10 1/06 or 6/06 no confirmation e-mail was sent (received).
There have been registration e-mails for the 'Free Solaris Binary License Program' (Solaris 9) back in 2004. These e-mails listed the number of licenses you asked for when registering.

  • Not able to Install Solaris 8 Binary License Program

    HI,
I downloaded the Solaris Binary License Program.
I cut a Installation CD and 2 Software CD's. All the way i did as per the instruction given in the solaris site.
Now the problem is i tried to install in the fresh machine.
when i tried to install nothing is happening.
Is there any boot disk needed in this place.
Or please assist me to get this work done.
My email id is [email protected]
Expecting a detail discussion on this.
    Thanks in advance,
    Senthil.

    Hi Senthil,
Step 1:Download the 3 CD image files in the zip format from the Sun site.
Step 2:Unzip the files(I used Winzip version 8.0). Step 3:Rename the files with the .iso ext.(If you are going to use the Easy CD creator) Step 4:Start Easy CD Creator and select for DATA CD. Step 5:From the File option select "Create CD from Cd image" Step 6:Select the image file with .iso extension. I used Write speed as 2x300kb/sec and the option Test and Create Cd. Under the Advanced option used Close Disc. After the copying was done I had the following:
1.Cd labeled"multi_ICD_SOL_8_U3_SPARC(bootable CD) having the following files volume ,ADD_INSTALL_CLIENT ,BOOT, Copyright Modify_Install_Server
2.Sol_8_U3_sparc(CD 1 of 2) having following files and folders:
_volume.inf, _slicema, _install, _cdtoc ,Solaris(folder)of size 495 mb. I was able to boot the machine and load the O.S) .This should work, make sure that you make a small dos partition and
make it active before you start installing Solaris 8 or else the installer will come out giving you any error"Unable to find specified disks"
Let me know the outcome of this procedure.I had tried this my self and it was working.
If it does not work let me know what kind of m/c and cdrom are you using.

  • Solaris 10 Patch Question

Assuming two identical systems installed side-by-side
and operated by the same owner. Both machines are
registered with Sun Microsystems and possess valid
licenses for Solaris 10. The owner has determined the
same Software Update (formerly called a patch) is
required for both systems. The SWU (Software Update)
is only available from Sun Microsystems. Only one of
the systems is covered by a Sun Service Plan that
provides access to the SWU, the other is a
self-maintained system without any service plans
    whatsoever.
         System A     System B
Valid Solaris 10 License     yes     yes
Active Sun Service Plan     yes     no
Service Method     Sun Service Plan     Self Maintained
    Questions:
Can SWU obtained from Sun for System A be used on
    System B?
    a.     if the SWU is only made available with a Sun Online
ID + Service Plan? (In other words, a restricted or
    behind-the-firewall SWU)
    b.     If the SWU is only made available with a Sun Online
ID? (In other words, a public SWU, such as a
    hardware driver update).
    c.     Will Sun accept time and materials POs for software
    troubleshooting?
    d.     Will Sun accept time and materials POs for hardware
    troubleshooting?

No, it doesn't have an OBP, instead it uses a BIOS, which is quite different from the OBP.
Normally; doing init 0 on a x86 box will just bring you to a state where it offers to reboot.
On x86 you also have the "Configuration Assistant", which does some tasks which would be performed by the OBP on the SPARC architecture.

  • I'd Like to thank Sun Microsystems

Hello all, My Name is Nathan Evans. I live in Ontario,Canada and work as a Labourer.
Until Recently, I had not had the opportunity to use Solaris, Nor Studio Creator, because i could not afford them, but thanks to Sun Microsystems for releasing some of their Core products for free to use, I have finally been able to enjoy using alot of Suns Products.
Thank you Very much for allowing a poor hobbyist like my self to finally use quality, stable software, with out piracy.
As of this moment I am saving what little money I can to pay for my Solaris training, after which i plan on taking Java training as well.
So Thank you very much, it is more then appreciated, and you have made my life a hell of alot more interesting.
You have given me something to work towards, Solaris Certification, so that i can get a meaningful job besides busting my back to provide for my family.
    Thank you.
    Sincerely
    Nathan Evans

On behalf of Sun Microsystems I'm delighted to say "You're welcome. Enjoy!"
You should be aware that our middle ware stack (Sun Java System Web Server, Sun Java System Application Server, Sun Java System Portal Server, etc) is also covered by the Solaris Enterprise License. This entitles users to download, use in production environments, etc entirely free of charge. For mission critical uses Sun offers Right To Use licenses that provide indemnification, and Support contracts that provide guaranteed Service level Agreements. Sun also has excellent training courses available for most of our products.
So - You're welcome! Don't be shy about spreading the word.

  • Where is the download page for 9/04?

Yes, I know that 10 is out, but I'm not ready to move to it yet for various reasons. So, anyone have the magic StoreId & PartDetailId to get the dumb sunstore to take me to the FREE downloads for Solaris 9 x86 & sparc? It would seem that the links for 9 have gone missing, while the links for 8 are still there. Note, this is for personal use, so please don't tell me to contact my sun rep, because I have none. Also note that I do not want, nor can I necessarily afford, to shell out $100 for a media kit. At a very minimum, can anyone tell me what exact filenames are for the x86 & sparc cdrom isos? Thanks in advance.

Looks like you're SOL. According to the Solaris FAQ:
    Q. Will free Solaris usage licenses be available for previous versions of Solaris?
    A. None, free usage licenses begin with Solaris 10.
In other words, if you want to use a previous version of Solaris, you're screwed. Nice attitude, Sun. Forcing people to go to the next version of Solaris even if they're not ready. How very Microsoft-ish of you.

  • DS license with Solaris: 5.1 vs. 5.2?

My understanding was that Solaris 9 comes with a license to use Sun ONE DS 5.1 with up to 200,000 entities (having userPassword) primarily for Naming Services, but that this license didn't extend to DS 5.2.
I'm seeing a lot of traffic about using 5.2 and less about 5.1, plus references to getting 5.2 off of the Solaris CD's. I haven't got Solaris 9 04/04 yet. But my understanding (URL's below) was that 12/03 and 04/04 still came with 5.1 for Solaris and a separate copy of 5.2 as a part of the Java Enterprise System, which has a separate licensing system.
    http://docs.sun.com/db/doc/817-3801/6mjcck32h?a=view
    http://docs.sun.com/db/doc/817-3801/6mjcck32v?a=view#whatsnew-s9fcs-45
Has this changed? Does the DS license included in Solaris now allow use of DS 5.2? Or are a lot of people buying the full JES or a separate copy of DS 5.2 when they get 5.1 for free?

Directory Server is now delivered as a component of Java Enterprise System, that's true.
You can also download 5.2 from http://wwws.sun.com/software/download/products/3ee79e69.html it seems.
Concerning the licensing, if you've had a maintenance contract starting from the first entry, then you can upgrade to 5.2, for which Sun is continuing to release patches until that version is retired. As far as I know anyway.
    Hope that helps,
    Mark

  • License for cross-compilation for solaris 10 sparc on Linux x86

I'd like to do cross-compilation for solaris 10 sparc on Linux x86 using gcc (for linux). To do that, I have to copy libraries (/lib/64) and includes (/usr/include) from a sparc machine to my linux machine.
The compilation will be run on about (up to) 50 Linux machines (by various developers). We also have 3 solaris-10-SPARC machines.
I wonder if Solaris license allows me to copy the includes and libs to perform compilation elsewhere.
I also checked "OTN License Agreement for Oracle Solaris", but it looks like Oracle allows for installing "the programs" on up to 3 machines, but I need it on 50.
Thanks for any suggestions or redirections to a proper place where I can get an answer.
    Marek

When installing Solaris 10 01/06 on a Dell 1850 I receive an error message during the install saying "no disk found". I assume that the drive/controller is not recognized. The Dell 1850 is listed under the HCL for Solaris 10 10/06. I don't believe I can use the Solaris(TM) Device Driver for the LSI MegaRAID Adapter floppy with 1/06. I dont have any other Solaris boxes up so I cant build a jump start server. Any suggestions?

  • Oracle licensing in Solaris zones

    Hi all,
I've read a few documents about Oracle licensing :
    http://www.sun.com/third-party/global/oracle/consolidation/Containers_Oracle_041305.pdf
    http://www.oracle.com/corporate/pricing/partitioning.pdf
However, there's one thing not clear to me. In Solaris zones, you dedicate threads (usually referred to as 'CPU' on Solaris) to zones. Oracle licensing is always about the number of cores used by the partition, not the number of threads. How do you convert from threads to cores?
    I'll give an example:
A T2 system with 2 processors, 8 cores each, 8 threads each (128 threads in total). You create a resource pool with 2 CPUs (threads): 1 thread from one core, and 1 thread from another one (or they are assigned like that for you) and associate a zone that runs Oracle.
I can think of two ways of calculating the number of cores used:
    1) divide the number of dedicated threads by the number of threads per core: 2 / 8 = 0.25 (optionally round it up to 1) -- This is how IBM does its licensing.
    2) count the number of physical cores that are being used by the zone. In this case this is 2, as the threads are not running on the same core.
Can anyone help me figuring this out?
    Thanks!
    Regards,
    Mathieu

    Hi Dezutterm,
I'm not a sales guy, but from how I understand things... you've already figured it out yourself:

Can anyone help me figuring this out?Like you've seen, Oracle cares about how many cores are running Oracle software, not threads (from "Processor" definition here: http://www.oracle.com/corporate/pricing/technology-price-list.pdf). If you have 2 cores running Oracle software, you take "2" and multiple by the Core Processor Licensing Factor for that model of CPU (http://www.oracle.com/corporate/contracts/library/processor-core-factor-table.pdf) which for a T2 is 0.25... meaning you need 2 x 0.25 = 0.5 processor licenses. If you would have used both threads from the same core, you would need 0.25.
If this isn't correct, somebody please let us know, thanks!

  • Oracle Solaris Express 11 license

    Hi,
Can I use Solaris Express 11 in production environment without buying the support subscription from Oracle?
Can I use older versions of Solaris (9 and 10) in production environment without buying the support subscription from Oracle?
    Thanks,
    Tom

Each system you've installed had a license attached to it. You must follow those rules.
For older systems, our experience is that Oracle maintained whichever terms were agreed with Sun and/or upgraded the support contracts to current plans (which usually are better and/or the same).
For new systems it's pretty clear you'll need a support contract from Oracle.
Just to have yourself covered, I suggest you submit the old systems you're interested to keep running to an Oracle rep and ask for their opinion. Licenses can be tricky and a good sales rep will have enough experience answering the same question from other customers to be able to help you properly.
As for Sol11 "Express", it also requires a license even though people may view it as Solaris11's little brother. Oracle isn't as active as I expected in selling Sol11 Express but they are nevertheless offering official support. When Solaris 11 comes out later this year they may change things (perhaps put Sol11 Express on a fast dev track, make it free, etc). For the time being, you need a support contract for production systems.

  • Licensing, moving 9i from Solaris to AIX 5L

    Hi,
I would like to know if I have to open a TAR in order to get Oracle 9i for AIX 5L?
We have used Oracle 9i for Solaris so far but we are moving to AIX 5L, and I was told by a vendor, that since we have Product and Software support the only thing I have to do is, to request it via TAR... is this true??..

As far as I know, if you purchased 9i and you have a support license and login to metalink, all you have to do is download the base release for 9i for AIX from oracle (at link below), and then download the database patches to bring it up to date. I would probably inform Oracle that your are moving to a new server so that they can keep their records up to date.

  • Solaris Licensing on x86

We are currently in the process of preparing a proposal to one of our customers.
Our customers environment is based on Solaris (SPARC) and we hope to replicate some of that environment in our location on Solaris ( x86) and use it for development and performance testing.
My question is does the OTN license cover the Solaris licenses or do we need to purchase additional licenses?

In my opinion Oracle is on a good way to banish the loyal Solaris x86 customers like us, which have big server like Sun Fire X4600 M2. As we are a public company, we need to do public tenders for machine, so we get what we get, maybe Sun-Oracle, maybe HP, whoever make the better deal.
So what are the prices for running Solaris x86
    e.g: HP 970 8 Sockel, 8 Cores vgl. https://shop.oracle.com/pls/ostore/f?p=ostore:2:0::NO:RP,2:PROD_HIER_ID:6916016290451192110906
    Native Solaris 10 x86: 8 x 1584 = 12672 € / year
    Vmware ESX mit Solaris 10: das gleiche = 12672 € / year
Oracle still did not recognise "soft partitioning" technologies such as VMWare and Microsoft Virtual Server when licensing by processor/CPU. Instead you must licence by the physical processor in the underlying hardware. (see http://www.oracle.com/corporate/pricing/partitioning.pdf) "hardware partitioning" technologies are recognised, but Oracle places some caveats on this also.
Oracle VM with Solaris 10: (hard partitioning) ... grey area
    but !
Oracle Linux Premier Support = 1.812 €/ year ... per system, number of cpus is not counting (factor 10)
Oracle Linux Network Support = 93.96 € / year ... per system, number of cpus is not counting (factor 120, if you don't want support on a call basis, just the software & patches).
So we have started to think about to get rid of Solaris, where we can easily, because this new license feed for solaris are absurd.
And no, the sales representative are clueless, whoever I call, can not give me clear saying e.g about running Solaris on Oracle VM, are e.g. Fujtsu maschines like M4000 out of scope or not.
Quite fed up with this topic ...
    kind regards, thomas
