Solaris 8 on Dell Power Edge 4400

What does it take to get Solaris 8 installed on a Dell Power Edge 4400?
Thus far, I have followed instructions found elsewhere to grab the Adaptec
cadp160 driver, which I successfully install in the Device Configuration Assistant. Every time I select the CD as my boot device, the system wedges while trying to load adp.bef, with a "short read" error. Eventually, the system fails out to the boot interpreter.
This system has 2x1Ghz P4's on it, onboard AIC-7899 (where a Quantum Atlas V lives) and AIC-7880 SCSI controllers, plus a PCI AHA 2940 controller (on which the CD lives).
This is very frustrating--I couldn't install Solaris 8 on my Dell Dimension 4100 either (ACPI tables not in reclaim memory bug).
I am using the Solaris 8 01/01 boot images, FYI.
Has anyone out there successfully gotten Solaris 8 to install and boot on one of these beasts?
Thanks,
Chris

After thrashing for 2 weeks with the onboard 7880 SCSI and onboard 7890 RAID controllers, I was finally able to load up Solaris 8 on a Poweredge 2400. (4/01 build)
The only way I was able to do it was configure the server as below:
7880 SCSI: CD-ROM drive only device on this controller, set to ID 5.
7890 RAID controller: Disabled. Dont' believe Dell or Adaptec, this card will not work with Solaris 7 or 8. Even with the RAID chip removed and running as standard SCSI controller, it still would not work.
Adaptec 2940 U2W: 9G Quantum Atlas V drive with HP SureStore DAT 24i drive.
PERC II RAID controller yanked out of older 4100 system, 3 drives running RAID 5.
Important note: Do not attach anything to the 7880 controller besides the CD. The system will not boot if attempting to boot to the HD or if you attempt to boot from CD, it will hang at the adp.bef file.
Hope this helps..

  • Dell Power Edge 6400 CDROM Problem

When installing Solaris 8 for intel in a Dell Power Edge 6400 with two processors, everything looks fine at the begginning before booting, I mean the Cd rom drive is detected as booteable, but when the system start to install, it asks from where to extract the operating system and in the list does not appear the CD Rom, it just displays the networks cards.
Please I have more than a week with this problem, I already check the HCL, I already changed the HD, the CdRom (twice), but it continues without detecting the cdrom after booting.
The Cdrom is in the scsi 5.
Any body in UK, USA, Mexico or wherever please HELP.
    Carlos Herrera

If I remember right the Dell Power Edge had an adaptec 160 controller which
you have to download and install the scsi drivers from the Adaptec website.
Check and verify which scsi controller you have on your Dell.

  • Which free linux can I use on a Dell Power Edge Server 2650

    Dear all,
I have recently joined the subscription program and want to install Netweaver. From my old company I could purchase a couple of Dell Power Edge Servers 2650 with 6GB RAM, Dual Core etc - so plenty of hardware. As next step I want to install a linux OS to be able to to install SAP trial version and/or the Netweaver software from the subscription program.
In the compatibility section I have read that I need either SUSE or RedHat linux enterprise edition. But these enterprise editions cost money when purchasing it. Is there also a free linux edition that I could use? If not, which enterprise linux would be the cheapest that I could use?
    Thanks and best regards
    Daniel Blaschkowski

    Hi Daniel,
you can download a copy of the installation DVD of SUSE Enterprise Server 10SP2 for free from the Novell's Web Site. You won't have support nor will you be able to get software updates but it will allow you to get a first feeling about Netweaver on Linux.
Another option is to use [Centos |www.centos.org] that is a clone of Redhat Enterprise Server. You will have to cheat a little bit to be able to install SAP on it (you have to make your Centos appear like it is a true Redhat) but it works without a hitch.
Of course, do not run any production instances on such setups as you will get into trouble with SAP support in case you open up a problem message related to these platforms
    Have fun,
    Seb

  • FANAQ: Solaris 8 on Dell CPx

This is one of those Frequently Asked but Never Answered Question. I am having problem with install Solaris 8 on my new Dell CPx. The frist problem seems to be that the Solaris kernel does not recognize the system keyboard. I was able to use USB keyboard to perform installation ok, but when I booted it up, I endup with a blank screen even with the USB keyboard. I guess I may have to solve these problems one by one. I know that Sun has a translate program that translate Linux dev. drivers to Sun driver. So if someone can point out what missing driver could cause the keyboard problem, I may try to work that first, then bit-by-bit, I hope I can have Solaris 8 running on Dell Laptop.
Of course, if someone has already installed solaris 8 on Dell CPx, I'm glad to learn the tricks.
    thanks.

dont think so..not for the 7500. post here if you get it working for the 7500.

  • Help install solaris 10 on dell 430SC

tried without success install solaris 10 on dell 430SC.
the installation hangs at the very begining with no
    appreant errors . any suggestions?thanks.

    I couldn't get Solaris 10 to install.
However, I downloaded the Solaris express 11 b24 and that installs fine. It runs the 64 bit kernel :) No problems so far.
The graphics for the SC430 is a little odd. We use the SUN window system (not XOrg) and select the XF84Intel driver for the card. This works fine, trouble is it tends to like to start in a very high res mode i.e 1600xmnnnn. Run KDM config and drop the resolution.
This release uses the grub boot loader which is different but good.
    Best of Luck

  • Help! Can'i install Solaris 9 on Dell Laptitude LS

Can'i install Solaris 9 on Dell Laptitude LS. Setting of video card and monitor fail.
    My configuration is:
    P3 450
    128MB
MagicMedia 256 AV video and sound card.
    Monitor unknown with 800*600 resolution.
Anyone has idea about that. Thanks!

Yes, OS 9 is PPC architecture only. The only way I can think of that you could possibly run it would be to download PearPC (A PPC architecture emulator-http://pearpc.sourceforge.net/) off of Windows (which is officially unsupported on Apple machines to begin with), and then attempt to run OS 9 off of PearPC.
The program is rather slow, and as you can see, the process is really quite time consuming, illogical (three different systems, one running in emulation), and definitely not worth the end result.
    Good Luck,

  • Can't install Solaris 10 on DELL VOSOTRO 200 ?

    Hi All,
I am new to SOLARIS, and wanted to play with it.
I tried to install Solaris 10 ON dell VOSOTRO 200 and it does not install at all. It gets stuck at the very first place. I tried open solaris and Solaris in all different ways, CD/DVD/USB.
I used the same CD/DVD in Emachine and they get install just fine. Is solaris not compatible to DELL VOSOTRO? Or am I doing something wrong ?
    Any answer would be appreciated.

Hi, I had a similar problem when I tried to Install Solaris X86 on an HP Proliant DL586g2. You'll probably find the problem Is that you need to Install some drivers first to enable the Installation. If you need more specific details I can probably find a guide on how to do this. But I'm certain It Is possible to run Solaris on the Dell It just might take a bit of perseverance.
    Good luck

  • Solaris 10 on Dell Dimension 4300

After initial install Solaris 10 on Dell Dimension 4300 (Pentium 4 1.6GHz, 512MB RAM), when system first reboot, I got error message:
    Configure IPv4 interface: Segamentation Fault
    elxl0
..... can not assign request address.
So I have manualy asign IP address when system boot up, what was wrong ?
    Thanks.

I remember that a similar problem was reported on the solarisx86 mailing list, in an old build of solaris 10:
    http://groups.yahoo.com/group/solarisx86/message/3456
What version of Solaris 10 are you using? The current build is s10_55, Solaris Express 5/2004.
Apparently there was a problem with /sbin/ifconfig or /sbin/mount crashing at boot time, when /usr was
on a separate filesystem, and some naming serverice was consulted (?). (bugid 4853968).
    The workarounds are apparently:
    - don't use a separate /usr filesytem, or
    - use numeric IP addresses in /etc/hostname.interface files

  • Power Macintosh 4400/200 (7220) – No video output

    Hi guys
In my collection, I've got a "mutant mac", a Power Macintosh 4400/200 and I'd like to bring it back to life again!
The owner wanted to throw it away, so I got it (with mouse and keyboard) and the same day, I also saved a boxed Power Mac G4 AGP 350 Mhz from being recycled...
Well, the problem: No video output at all! As I don't have any old Apple CRTs (yet ;–)   ), I tried 5 other CRTs with a DB-15 to VGA adapter (tried all possible resolutions). The CRTs lights don't even get green when I connect it to the 4400.
But I think that it still boots (start up gong, hard drive seems to be working). I've done PRAM-reset several times...
    So:
    1. Adapter dead?
    2. VRAM dead?
    3. PRAM battery dead? But that wouldn't affect the graphics, I guess...
    Where would you start?
    Thx a lot!
    Nicolas (from Switzerland)

    Hi!
The previous owner already got it with the problem some years ago... and it is possible, but I'm not sure, that the guy who gave it to him already got it with the problem too ^^ Well...
I've noticed something: When I press the start button (not holding it like for a forced shut down) when it is running, it immediately shuts down... normal? Or does it depend on the OS?
The VRAM seems clean, but the RAM... not corroded, but maybe it could need some cleaning... I'll do that (and some research about the model).
I think it's still original (not upgraded).
VRAM: AP2761-04   original (on the 200, 2MB VRAM)

    Slot 2 is empty

  • Power Macintosh 4400/200 Printer

Our old Epson Printer for our Power Macintosh 4400/200 just died. Can new printers be outfitted to work with the 4400-200?
    Thanks,
    Megan

The PowerMac 4400/200 can't upgrade past 9.1. So be sure to get Mac OS 9 on one of the system discs that look like * and say in black fine print 9.0, 9.0.2, 9.0.4, or 9.1. The 9.2.1 disc will not work. Gray discs from another Mac model won't work either. It also can't say Update on the disc. If you get 9.0, 9.0.2, or 9.0.4, you can upgrade to 9.1 here:

  • Solaris 8 on Dell Inspiron 3500 ?

    Hi!
Is there anyone who successfully installed Solaris 8 on a Dell Inspiron 3500 laptop? The problem is with the video card (NeoMagic) which is not automaticaly recognized by Solaris installer.
    Thanks for any advices,
    Claudiu

I am trying to install on a Dell Latitude laptop. I cant get very far though. Please see below:
I'm quite familiar with Solaris 8 and have done numerous installs
including dual boot on x86, and jumpstarts on Ultras.
I am trying to install x86 on a Dell laptop. No problems with setting up
the bios, and telling it to boot into the Solaris install menu. (from 1
    of 2 cd)
    My problem is this:
When I get to the language preference question, my keyboard mapping is
shot. I've tried numlock off and on, and used 3 different keyboards.
Laptop keyboard out of docking station, and two different keyboards
    while the Dell is docked.
Funny thing is, the mapping is fine until the point where the install
program wants language preferences entered. I tried various keys and the
whole mapping of the keys on the board is off.
As I mentioned, in the earlier phase of the install program, when it
asks if you want Jumpstart, the mapping is fine. I did not have this
problem on my x86 install on my tower, (same keyboard tested as bad on
the Dell) and used the exact same cd's (1 of 2) that sun sent.
So I tried to configure Jumpstart to get around the mapping. Booted the
Dell bios to boot from the network using BOOTP, which is the core
protocol that Jumpstart uses. No go. Used the procedure from the Sun
Admin 2 class, it is proven to work on an Ultra environment. No go on
    x86 though.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks much,
    Sam
