Solaris 8 on PC100 M7** mainboards

Dear All
Has anyone successfully installed Solaris 8 on a PC100 M7** mainboard?? A number of users have experienced kernel panics and BAD TRAP failures when installing with IDE devices - they can't get past the DCA part of the install.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated
Simon

I'm having problems with a PC-100 motherboard as well.
I've installed WinNT, Win 2K, Win 9x, Linux a number of times, but I can't get the DCA floppy nor the CD install disk to boot. Or maybe it boots, but then hangs. My system has a new ASUS CUBX PC-100 motherboard (OK -- apparently not on the HCL...).

    Hello!
There is one simple method also..
Instead of Installation disk of Solaris, insert the Software 1/2 Disk, and try to follow the actuall Suninstall method of installing Solaris. Here you will get the option that how to utilize the free space.
I myself have installed more 5 OS on a single Hard disk :) this way. Try this method

I am developing a ethernet nic(10/100) driver in solaris 8 os. My mainboard is ASUS P2L97, Pentium II,memory 96M .
I open the machine, the driver which wrote by me (the driver has errors) will be loaded, when the os initiates,
my driver will transmit a lot of frames, so before i enter into CDE , my os will crash.

  • Planning to buy new PC.

I'm planning to buy a new customized PC on which I would like to install Solaris 10.
I've received an interesiting offer based on Asus P5KR motherboard together with the
    Intel Q6600 and PCI-E GeForce 7300
I've been browsing through the hardware on the Sun website, but haven't found back this motherboard
    on the list.
Does somebody already installed Solaris on PC with this mainboard?
Could there be any potential issues using this mainboard?

Are you planning to buy a desktop, or laptop... and are you going to edit HiDef video?
If you are going to edit HiDef video, especially that from a DSLR camera, you need "somewhat" more than Adobe's minimum specifications
    i7 CPU
8Gig MINIMUM ram, 16gig might be better
2 7200rpm hard drives, or SSD and 7200rpm hard drive (as already mentioned)
ATI graphic card with at least 512Meg ram (1)
Read computer specifications to find one with Firewire... or, if a desktop, buy a Fireware card that uses a TI chip http://forums.adobe.com/thread/940242
    (1) Premiere Elements does not use the GPU for hardware acceleration like Premiere Pro, so a more expensive nVidia card is not really needed... minimum 512meg video ram, 1Gig of video ram if you are also going to use Photoshop for large pictures

Have anyone success Solaris 10 x86 6/06 installation of Supermicro PDSMi mainboard?
I booted system on PXEBoot from network installation server. Kernel loads, but hangs after:
    SunOS Release 5.10 Version Generic_118855-14 32-bit

Use is subject to license terms.
I've also try disable ACPI, but no success.
    Have any ideas?
    Thanks!

Ok.. after more testing i found following:
    - When ACPI is disabled, system hangs forever. I run kernel debugger (kmdb) and set:
    moddebug /W0x800000000
    :c
    ... lot module debugging ...
    load 'fs/fifofs'
    (and hangs here).
    - When ACPI is enabled, system boots up and OpenWindows installer ask about install language. But now keyboard+mouse doesn't work anymore.

  • [Solaris 10] Installation problem on nForce4 Ultra - SATA II - raid 0

    hi,
Like I was read on HW web page, Solaris 10 should work fine with 'nForce4' (without 'Ultra'),
but on mine mainboard (nForce4 Ultra) instalator was unable to found my array.
I have ASUS A8N-E (nForce4 Ultra) with 2x 250GB Seagate on SATA II RAID 0.
Is it posible to install this OS on 'nForce4 Ultra' or maybe I am doing sth wrong ?

Hi, I have the similiar problems on Solaris 10 installation.
    I have a Compaq SR1710 AMD Sempron™ + 1GB RAM. I am trying make it a mini workstation.
However, the installation was never able to throught.
It always stop or freeze on the "dos" screen after I select "interactive" installation.
The last error message I got was something "Skipped rtls01" something.
I am trying to install Solaris 9 now, so far on disc 2.
    Very smooth. No problem..
hope someone can give me advise on how to install version 10 on the machine.

  • How to install solaris 8 in 30 GB ata/100 drive ?

Solaris installation fails saying that there is no suitable hard disk or partition available in my system.
If I run format utility I can see the hard drive but
Solaris does not recognize it's partitions and requires me to enter nr of cyls, heads etc...
I do not go further because it may destroy my whole partitions.
have 30 GB ata/100 Seagate hard drive and there is
a 5 GB empty slot reserved for Solaris installation.
It's just after a 12.5 GB of first primary (with logicals) and just before a 10 GB of another primary.
    I've tried followings without success:
    1- Leaving 5 GB unpartitioned
2- Created a 5 GB primary partition without format
    3- Created a 5 GB ext2 (using linux) partition
    4- Created a 5 GB ext2 with ufs format
Everytime I've got same error, Solaris cant find a partition. I suspect it does not recognize hard disks larger than either 8 Gig or 1024 cylinders or ata/100.
    What can I do?

I downloaded the Solaris 8 for x86 yesterday and burned them into CDs.
I have the following hardware configuration.
    - Intel i815E mainboard
    - Intel PIII 733
    - KingMax 256M 133MHz
    - Maxtor 30G hard disk
    - Acer 50X CDROM
The inistallation initially gave me a warning.
WARNING: ACPI Table not in Reclaim Memory
And it gave more warning during the installation process:
Resource Conflicting -- Both devices are added
    The conflicting devices are:
    - PNP0C01
    - ISY0050
Unfortunately, I don't know what they are. :(
However, these are not the whole story. The installer went ahead to
let me fdisk my 30G hard disk.
I accepted the "Solaris Default" and answered Y to the question "Can
swap slice start at the beginning of the disk?". Immediately, the
system hangs there but the keyboard is responsive that I can type
    anything I want.
In addition, I use the 512M as swap as suggested by the installer.
Can anyone help me with this situation? I have tried installing this
version of Solaris for several times but with no luck. :S
Any insights are highly appreciated! Thanks!

  • Solaris 8 on IA with Promise Ultra100

    Hello,
i'm a newbie and i have an installation problem.
How can i install Solaris 8 on IA with a
    promise ultra100 controller-card.
    Can everyone help me?
    T. Wrobel

That doesn't work because there's no solaris driver
for the promise ide controller (these promise ide
controllers are not 100% pci-ide compliant and need
special driver support). Ask promise for such a
    solaris driver.
Most mainboards come with a PCI-IDE compliant
controller on the mainboard's chipset. Connect the
hard disk drive to that controller and solaris can
    use the disk drive.

  • CAN I INSTALL SOLARIS 10 INTEL PLATFORM ON MY PC

Can anybody guide me whether i can install solaris 10 intel platform on my pc having following configuration
    1. Processor = AMD SEMPRON 2500+ 64-BIT.
    2. MainBoard = ASUS K8V-MX.
    3. RAM-= 512 MB DDR PC3200
    4. Display = Onboard VIA/S3G Unichrome Pro IGP.
    5. LAN = Onboard VIA RHINE II Fast Ethernet Adapter.
    6. Monitor = 17" LG CRT, Model = Studioworks 700S
    7. Sony DVD- ROM.
    8. Samsung DVD-RW.
    9. HDD = 40 GB Samsung 7200 RPM.
If anybody knows let me know at my e-mail [email protected]

I don't think you will have many problems in this platform, but I'm not 100% sure.
What I recommend you is to get the VMWare and try there. VMWare is a software where you can create a virtual machine running under windows. In this virtual machine you could install solaris 10 (and any other OS you want to test in your computer). I have my Solaris 10 running under VMWare with excellent results (Laptop with Intel Celeron processor)... where I have VMWare installed in Windows!

  • Solaris 8 installation Error

    Dear Sir or Madam
    My system:
    * Intel 450, Sony ( CD -Rom and burner ) connect to primary IDE1 on mother board
    * Creative DVD rom connect to IDE 2 through ATA 100 card;
    * 80 G Western Didigtal connect to IDE1 through same ATA 100 card above.
    * Bios look at Sony burner as the CD-Rom in Bios setup and hard drive as SCSI.
During installation process it scaned through everything ( hard ware and driver) .
It reconize everythings of my system.
Instralling process went smooth (either boot with first CD or with device conf assi diskett) ( i got date, net work, ....window mode with correct color ) until it about to intstall program in hard drive, a window pop up in the middle of screen say : " could not found disk, check disk for cable and power ". and left top conner there is a window with some sentences and a shell # .
    I used Partition Magic 6.0 to for my hard drive ( C : program ; D: data ; G: blank unformated ) Intend G for Solaris.
    Please help me
    Millions thanks to you.

    Solaris doesn't currently support ATA100 IDE. That's
most likely what is going on.That's wrong.
Solaris has no problem with an ATA100 IDE interface, it it's
a standard pci-ide interface (those that you find on most
    mainboard chipsets).
If your IDE interface is non-standard (not pci-ide
compatible - like the additional promise ide controller you
find on some ASUS mainboards), the solaris pci-ide driver
won't work with harddiscs attached to such a controller. (For
the ASUS example given above, you need a special driver
from promise for their non standard hardware :-( )

Try this workaround for your problem and let me know the outcomes.
Solaris bootstrap uses Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI)
for device configuration and MP interrupt routing.
    Try to disable your ACPI.
    Steps to follow:
    1) Use either eeprom(1M):
    # eeprom acpi-user-options=0x2
    ( OR )
    * Modify the Device Configuration Assistant (DCA) boot floppy.
Manually edit the /boot/solaris/bootenv.rc to add:
    setprop acpi-user-options 0x2
In this method is applicable for at the time of Solaris 8 installation.
DCA for Solaris 8 10/01 download it from this URL:
    http://soldc.sun.com/support/drivers/dca_diskettes/
The ACPI conflicts problem is not fixed and is resolved by disabling ACPI.
In the example you gave, while it is annoying, it probably does no harm. In
some cases it causes duplicate devices to show up, like two floppy or IDE
drives - neither of which work properly. Disabling ACPI is the safest way
to insure there will be no problems if this message shows up.
    2) Reboot the System.
    Hope it helps.

  • Solaris 8 x86: Webstart launcher causes reboot

    Hello,
    My x86 PC has:
    - Elitegroup K7S5A mainboard
    - AMD Athlon K7 XP 2400+ Socket A thoroughbred CPU
    - AmiBIOS
    - 256 MB SDRAM
    - 2 Hard Disks with 40 GB each
There was a resource conflict caused by SiS chipset. However, with a DCA floppy where the ata.bef file was patched, I was able to install the Solaris 8 x86 system successfully.
During installation process, on the question whether there is a network connected to the computer, I checked "No". This is because my network card is not detected by the system and I will investigate on that later.
Now, when I boot the system, the graphical system is coming up, but shortly after that the graphical system is terminated with the following message:
The Webstart launcher has terminated unexpectedly.
The Webstart launcher will restart following a system reboot.
Is there any idea about this error?
    Thank you in advance!
    Thomas

Did you configure the video card to use the "VGA" black&white driver?
B&W video isn't supported with the Webstart installer. You need either a 8-bit pseudo-color or 24-bit
true-color video mode. The workaround is to install in text mode, bypassing the configuration of the video
card when you install from the "1 of 2" CD.
    Or try the following workaround:

    - AMD Athlon K7 XP 2400+ Socket A thoroughbred CPU
    - AmiBIOS
    - 256 MB SDRAM
    - 2 Hard Disks with 40 GB each
When I start Solaris 8 installation with the installation CD, the following is displayed in the screen "Bus Enumeration":
Determining bus types and gathering hardware configuration data ...
Warning: Resource Conflict - both devices are added
    NON-ACPI device: ISY0050

    Port: 200-207
    ACPI device: CSC0001
    Port: 201-208
Next screen "Scanning Devices" works o.k.
Then the boot starts in line modus and shows the following:
error: Configuration error - missing controller?
The root file system is not mounted and the configuration assistant has exited prematurely. Booting is unlikely to succeed.
    Shortly later boot stops.
Please, can anybody tell me what the root of the error is? Is there something to be configured in the BIOS?

Continuing installation of my Solaris 8 x86 after a long break.
As mentioned above, the installation works now with the patched ata.bef. The installation seems to work o.k. After completion of the installation, I boot to the second hard disk where my Solaris 8 x86 installation is located. Solaris boot manager appears, Solaris boot process begins but shortly after, it stops with the following message:
error: Configuration error - missing controller?
The root filesystem is not mounted and the configuration assistant has exited prematurely. Booting is unlikely to succeed. CRL-ALT-DEL may be used to reset the machine.
Failover to boot interpreter - type ctrl-d to resume boot
    Pressing ctrl-d leads to
boot: source: open of '/etc/bootrc' failed
My configuration as mentioned at the beginning of the thread did not change in the meantime. Is there any idea what is wrong?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Solaris 8 IA installation problem.

    Hello !
    I've the following computer :
    Athlon 1Ghz (200MHz fsb)
    1GB RAM,
Ati Rage 128 PRO (16MB ram) AGP
Tekram DC390U2W (sym 53C895 chip) SCSI card
IBM 4.5 Gb FW scsi disk (will be used for install)
On this computer I boot the Solaris 8 IA install CD 7/01 hardware revi.
Everything works fine, all my hardware is correctly detected, the miniroot system is copied to the harddisk.
When the system reboots, The configuration assistant shows me my video card , my screen, mouse and keyboard (I've to change from USASCII to French...).
When I ask for a test, the system shows soe activity on the hard disk, which comes back regularly, but nothing graphical happens, and I've no way to regain control. The only solution is to reset the computer.
Upon reset, the disk had become un bootable, even if the partitions still exists.
Any help/info will be greatly appreciated !

That doesn't work because there's no solaris driver
for the promise ide controller (these promise ide
controllers are not 100% pci-ide compliant and need
special driver support). Ask promise for such a
    solaris driver.
Most mainboards come with a PCI-IDE compliant
controller on the mainboard's chipset. Connect the
hard disk drive to that controller and solaris can
    use the disk drive.
