Solaris 8 on Pentium 4

Does anyone know how to get the patch to load during an installation on P4? I have the patch but don't know exactly how to add it during an install.

Please tell me the name of your patch.
I meet the problem to seem you.

  • Espontaneous reboot trying to install solaris 8 on Pentium IV

I been having problems trying to install Solaris 8 for x86 platforms (2002 February edition) on an Intel Pentium IV system. This is the system spec:
    Pentium IV 1.7 GHz
    Intel Board D850 MV
    512 RAM BUS (RIMM)
Maxtor 40 Gb two primary partitions
    CD-ROM: Asus 52x
Already installed OSes: Windows 2000 Advanced Server. First Partition.
Problem: After I boot the PC with the boot diskette, and the boot process asks me for the Solaris CD 1 it asks for to methods. Jumpstar and Step Confirmation (not sure about the exact choises). Neither of both choises worked. When trying to read the Solaris CD 1 disk, it just reboots.
    What should I do?
Thanks in advance for the help.

Before running the b kadb -v command I found some warning and here they are:

  • Pentium 4 and Solaris

Okay..........I know I'm new and I know Pentium 4 is not on the supported hardware list for Solaris. However, can someone in Sun tell me what version of Solaris will support this new cpu? I would prefer Solaris on my box rather than another UNIX-based OS.

    http://www.sun.com/io_technologies/upcoming-patches.html
says that the next version of the solaris 8 kernel patch will add fixes for P-IV cpus. My guess would be, that
this patch is part of the next S8 update (MU5? 7/2001? or 8/2001?).
There are some rumours that you can install S8 with the help of kadb, but up to now no-one confirmed that
the kadb patch procedure really works. Have a look at http://groups.google.com/ with the keywords
"solaris" "setup_mca" and "pentium" for details:

  • CPU time sending/receiving with TCP

    Hello all,
I need to know how long it takes in the CPU to have the OS establish a TCP connection against another machine, and also to send/received TCP packets to/from that machine.
Say it's Solaris 9 and any CPU you are familiar with as an example (Intel, Sparc...)
    Thank you in advance

In the end I found a IEEE report where they tested Solaris 8 on Pentium 500 MHz. In a few words and ideally, it seems that TCP connections were allocated in around 0.6 ms during that test.

  • Motherboard & CPU

I've just purchased the Intel version of the Solaris 8 Media Kit.
I need to know if there are any particular Intel-based motherboards that work better than others, or any particular boards that don't work well at all...
I also need to know if there are any particular CPUs that work better than others, or any that don't work at all...
Am I restricted to Intel-based chipsets, or will AMD Athlon chipsets work? (AMD chipsets require special drivers to be installed, and those drivers probably are NOT available for the Solaris 8 Media Kits.)
What about AGP video, or the VIA-133 chipset???
Please respond to the following email address:

Thanks in advance, and have a great weekend...

    - Dell systems seem to be critical with solaris 8: on some
dell systems, the keyboard is messed up during
installation, on others the system does not boot at all
(search http://groups.google.com using the keywords: dell
    solaris prom_panic kmem_free)
    - Pentium-IV CPUs are not supported by solaris 8
(the latest kernel patch 108529-08 now includes fixes for
P-4 CPUs, so I'd expect that "Solaris-next" runs on that
    CPU, too)
AMD CPUs work fine with solaris 8. And Solaris 8 has no
problems with the common chipsets used together with AMD
CPUs either (AMD & VIA). For things like PCI-IDE (DMA,
etc.) solaris relies on your system's bios to properly
configure the PCI-IDE controller; for example solaris can
use UDMA on an Asus A7V board without special chipset
drivers! AGP cards are no problem, either.
But you should really check the Solaris HCL when selecting
hardware for a solaris x86 system:

  • Upgrade CPU+MOBO, do I need to reinstall OS?

    Hi,
My system is currently running Solaris 8 on Pentium II. I would like to upgrade the CPU to Pentium III 550, change motherboard and mem chips. Everything else is kept the same including backup drive, ether cards, etc.
My question is would I need to reinstall the OS? This machine takes a while to configure so I'm trying to avoid that.
    Thanks in advanced.

Thanks for the replies. I did the upgrade (new mobo+cpu+mem) over the weekend and I was forced into maintenance (read-only) mode because it said "couldn't open /dev/rdsk/c0d0s0" which was my hard drive before the upgrade.
The reason: the path to my hd has changed from /pci@0,0/pci-ide@4,1/ide@0/cmdk@0,0:a to /pci@0,0/pci-ide@7,1/ide@0/cmdk@0,0:a
I couldn't do devfsadm either because I was in read-only mode. But I found the solution on the net:
Boot from CD to single user, mount HD to /a and recreate the devices with drvconfig, tapes, ports, disks.

Yepp, we tried that as a test setup. Works, but I think we did not have

  • Solaris 10 GA and 64 bit Pentium Processor. Device Driver Problem

    We have a Dell Poweredge SC420 with 3.4 GHz Pentium 4 (EMT64)
it also has 300Gb SCSI disk and 2 Gb Ram.
By default this machine tried to boot with the 64 bit kernel then could not load the CADP driver (SCSI CARD). We forced the Kernel to 32 bit by changing the BOOT_FILE from /kernel/AMD64/unix to /kernel/unix.
The machine is now booted but we are having problems with our PCI device. The device is a DMA Bus master and works fine on another SC420 which has a 2.8GHz Non-64 bit processor running the same release of Solaris. The device driver fails in strategy when we try to bind the dma buffer,(ddi_dma_buf_bind_handle) returning DDI_DMA_TOOBIG when the cookie count is > 1.
The machine appears to function apart from our device although we have suffered some kernel panics. We cannot ascertain if other devices are performing DMA successfully but must assume that they are.
Anybody got any ideas, Has anyone else got this processor working?

My bad. The memory per guest domain is 1GB. Se the Section 1 (NEW) - Hardware http://wikis.sun.com/display/SolarisLogicalDomains/LDoms%20Community%20Cookbook

  • Solaris & Pentium 4 / Intel

    Hello,
I am Java Developer, all my experience is on Windows (No nothing about solaris).
I want to download the Solaris operating system on my PC at home to learn and write Java programs on it.
Please, told me what is the required version of Solaris for me ? How to install ? Is there conditions on hardware of software ? ...
    Thanks

I would recommend you start with the Hardware Compatibility List or HCL. If you are buying or building a PC for this purpose you will want to use ONLY devices on this list (and even some of them will give you problems). Solaris is a pain when you have to download 3rd party drivers and packages just to get a functional system - especially for developers who just want to get down to writing code. Here's the link:
    http://soldc.sun.com/support/drivers/hcl/#S8
Right now Solaris 9 is beta so I would recommend X86 2/02 (Distributed February 2002). That way you can get down to writing code and not get tied down with bug reports!

  • Solaris 8 installation problem on an Intel base PC

I'm quite new with Solaris. I got stuck in Solaris 8 installation just at almost the very beginning. After booting up the system from floppy and conituing pressing F2 and selecting booting from CD, I got an error message like:
    cannot mount on pci@0; 0/pci-ide@7; 1/ide01/sd@0; 0:a
    panic[cpu0]thread=FEC17440 vfs:mountroot
then, the system reboots itself again and again every time it reaches this point. I guess it's a problem with my CD-ROM. But the problem persists even if I change CD-ROM or move CD-ROM from secondary master to primary slave, etc. I also tried to change harddisk, but did no good to the problem. Is there any experienced users who could provide me with some solutions?
I'm using a system with: Pentium 133, 32 MB Ram, 4GB HDD, 3C905TX, ATI Rage II PCI, Matshita CR-587 CD-ROM, Serial mouse and so on. I also tried another system with: P III 450, Asus P3BF, 192MB Ram, Pioneer DVD-ROM, same HDD, and so on. The problem was still there with the latter system. However, I successfully installed Solaris 7 with the latter system before. Why can't it work with Solaris 8?
Thanks a lot for the help.

I've been having the exact same problems on a PowerEdge 500SC. I have managed to get Solaris up and running on the machine, however. I booted the DCA from the floppy disk and installed from the CD-ROM. When the DCA is ready to scan for devices I use the "Specific Scan" option to tell it to look for specific devices. I tell it to scan for all devices in the listing and in doing so the DCA finds ISA-based IDE controllers. After it provides a listing of the devices it found I use the "Device Tasks" option and the "View/Edit Devices" menu item then delete the Bus Mastering IDE controller device. Once the screen comes up to ask for a boot device, the drives will show up as on the ISA controllers.
I have to go through this process every time I boot the machine but I am able to make the system run at least.
I haven't figured out the ACPI problem, yet.

  • Solaris 8 installation problem on Dell PowerEdge 500SC

    Hi,
I am having TWO PROBLEMS installing Solaris 8 on Dell PowerEdge 500SC.
    This hardware spec is:
    Pentium-III at 1GHz
    256MB 133MHz ECC SDRAM
20GB 7200RPM ATA100 EIDE hard drive (on integrated ATA-100 controller)
48X EIDE CD-ROM drive (on integrated ATA-100 controller)
    Motherboard: unknown
    more details: http://www.dell.com/us/en/esg/topics/esg_pedge_sc_towermain_servers_3_pedge_500sc.htm
FIRST PROBLEM is the following message was shown at the hardware probe.
WARNING: ACPI Tables not in Reclaim Memory
Warning: Resource Conflict - both devices are added
    NON-ACPI device: PNP0C01
    Port: C00-C01, C06-C08, C14, C50-C52, C6C-C6F,
    CD6-CD7
    F50-F57
    ACPI device: PNP0C01
    Port 814-85B, 580-58F, C00-CD7, F50-F58
At this time, I was using "Solaris 8 (Intel Platform Edition) 10/01" released version.
I am not sure what this means, but it was RESOLVED with using newer "x86 DCA boot diskette (Patch-ID# 110930-05)".
But, the SECOND REAL PROBLEM is another one. It just happens booting the kernel after the hardware probe. I get the following messages about 2 minutes later, after beginning to load kernel.
    WARNING:/pci@0,0/pci-ide@1/ata@1 (ata1): timeout: abort request, target=0 lun=0
    WARNING:/pci@0,0/pci-ide@1/ata@1 (ata1): timeout: about device, target=0 lun=0
    WARNING:/pci@0,0/pci-ide@1/ata@1 (ata1): timeout: reset target, target=0 lun=0
    WARNING:/pci@0,0/pci-ide@1/ata@1 (ata1): timeout: reset bus, target=0 lun=0
After another 1 or 2 minutes I get more error and the system reboots.
Please give me any suggestion or advice!
    Thanks.

  • Several mysterious problems with Solaris 11 x86 install

    Hi folks,
I've recently installed Solaris 11 x86 as a replacement for Solaris 9 SPARC on an Ultra 2 machine. I like the operating system, but I've promptly acquired some mysterious problems. The computer is a Fujitsu Siemens Esprimo E2500 with a Pentium 4 HT 3.06 GHz processor, 2 GB RAM, an 80 GB SATA disk and a 147 GB SCSI disk.
I have had a few occasions on which the screen goes totally blank, the monitor claims that there is no signal, and I have to restart the machine. However, with the blank screen, the hard drive activity light is sometimes still flashing. This happens predictably when I try to log off (as opposed to shutting down) and when I use Totem media player and click on anything inside the Totem window. The motherboard has built-in graphics and brief specifications can be found here:
    http://uk.ts.fujitsu.com/rl/servicesupport/techsupport/professionalpc/ESPRIMO/Datasheets/ds_esprimo_edition_e2500.pdf
Yesterday my PS/2 keyboard started causing the motherboard to beep crazily when I use it. It beeps rapidly 4 times, then prints the expected character. However, the problem doesn't occur at the initial log in screen. The mouse cursor has also gone beserk on one occasion, flying all over the screen (I had this problem with a previous PC, but a different OS, and thought it was a hardware fault, which I why I got this new computer). With the keyboard problem, the machine is basically unusable. However, it is configured as a dual boot machine, and the keyboard problem isn't present with Windows XP.
There are also a few smaller, odd problems. Occasionally all the icons vanish from my Gnome desktop. The command prompt also mysteriously changed from $chris@pluto to $bash-4.1 just before the keyboard problem appeared, although that might have had something to do with me copying my home directory to a different disk and editing the /etc/auto_home file (moving the home directory worked fine). Also, unlike with Solaris 9 SPARC, I find that I have to have external SCSI devices switched on at boot time, should I want to use them later. That's a pain. With Solaris 9, I could run "boot -r" when I first attached the device, then switch on the SCSI devices and mount them whenever I wanted.
After the useful advice I received here about "more" and "less", I thought I'd post these problems and see if anyone can help. I'd really appreciate some advice. Can anyone identify likely causes for these problems? Which problems can I expect to solve and which do I have to live with?

  • Step by Step Guide to Install Solaris 10 11/06 With Windows XP on x86 PC

    hi everyone
here is how I fixed my dual boot & internet connectivity failure problems. I'm explaining in detail to help any Solaris newbie (like me) having same problems: ( as I didn't find any REAL Help thru Sun Help Documents / Pages )
My special thanx to " Phil Brown " ( who helped me alott on this )
First to get rid of Dell's Diagnostic Partition & System Recovery Partition I re-installed Windows XP Media Center Edition & at installation I made 4 Partitions of my Dell 9150 ( x86 Intel Pentium Dual Core ) 238 GB Hard Drive.
    (1) C: 100 GB for Windows XP ( NTFS )
    (2) D: 80 GB for Solaris 10 ( RAW )
    (3) E: 50 GB for Linux ( RAW , which I haven't installed yet )
    (4) F: 6 GB (RAW)
    (5) G: 2 GB Un-Allocated Space
Restarted PC after Win XP installation & installed Partition Magic 8 . In PM8 I formatted Solaris partition as FAT 32 (at Solaris installation it changed to Solaris format) & Linux as Linux EXT 3 . Rebooted the PC. I Started Solaris 10 11/06 installation from the DVD I burned from Sun downloads.
    Here's how I installed Solaris 10 11/06 :

    (32) There was a Warning: " A Linux fdisk partition was found on this disk (c1d0), which is the default bootdisk. Having a linux fdisk partition on the same disk as a Solaris fdisk partiton is not supported. Do you want to load the default Lay out ? I choose NO
    (33) It displayed 4 partitions. 1st: " Unknown " 100GB , 2nd: FAT32LBA, this I changed to Solaris by clicking on partition, size 80GB . 3rd: Linux 50GB , 4th: DOSEXTLBA 8GB , hit NEXT
    (34) I choose NO to " Preserve Data Warning " (the 80GB partition)
    (35) Displayed " Lay Out File Systems " screen, c1d0 was highlighted. > NEXT
    (36) On " Ready to Install Screen " it displayed Fdisk partitions: 1st: Unknown "Preserved" , 2nd: FAT32LBA delete, & Solaris add, 3rd: Linux "Preserved" , 4th: DOSEXTLBA "Preserved" >>> hit " Install Now "

    (39) At sign-in screen, I signed in as, user name: " root " & enterd password (which I typed at installation)

When it was fully up, the Internet was working right away. Restarted again to check Windows. Selected " Windows " at reboot screen & Windows was working just fine.
It took me few allnighters to figure these out, I hope these will helpful to Solaris newbies like me. Still I can't figure out ... How to install any software (obviously designed for Solaris 10 (x86) ) onto Solaris, but thats a different issue.

"A Linux fdisk partition was found on this disk (c1d0), which is the default bootdisk. Having a Linux fdisk partition is not supported"
It might not be supported, but it works fine for me on my thinkpad :-) .
    redhat/solaris/xp.
You can't just use the linux grub, though, because it won't understand
solaris 'slices within partitions'. You need to get Solaris to install
grub itself (in fact, you can't stop it doing so, which is rather unfair),
and then add in the linux * xp entries to Solaris's /boot/grub/menu.lst
(== grub.conf) to get it to pick up fedora & xp. Chainloading xp worked
fine for me. Chainloading RHEL4/5 doesn't, so I had to cat the grub.conf
from red hat on to the end of solaris's menu.lst. Stick red hat's grub.conf
on a USB pen or just write it down before putting Solaris on, otherwise you'll
have to boot linux rescue of a red hat CD in order to get hold of it after
    Solaris's grub takes over.
