Solaris 8 on Sun v215

Is there any way to install Solaris 8 on a sun v215? When I try to boot from cdrom, the server starts to read the DVD then stops and complains about not finding a path to kernel. The Solaris 10 out of the box install shows the platform to be sun4u which is the same as the older v210s we have. The CPUs are also both Sparc IIIi's so I'm not sure why it won't install. Please help...
Also, I just realized the v215 isn't even on the HCL yet. Why is that?

Sometinmes it seems to take a comparison to others before understanding arrives.
Microsoft no longer provides support for Windows 98, either,
despite the fact that there are many corporate users still running it.
Why does the size of an installed base define whether support will be provided?
Now, considering your question from a hardware functionality viewpoint,
and once again using the Redmond company as an example,
I dare you to try to install Windows 98 on a new Core 2 Duo system.
It won't work, and Microsoft is not about to put functionality for it onto that old Win9x kernel.
You could ask them until you run out of breath and they would ignore you.
Solaris 8 is about to be discontinued. It won't be re-engineered to work
in hardware that gets invented now and into the future.
Solaris EOL Policy
You could choose to just not buy the computer,
or you could realize you must run a mixed-Solaris company (8, 9, and 10),
or you could migrate everything to (and learn the nuances of) a newer Solaris.

Does Oracle 10g (which has a default 64bit Solaris installation) work on solaris + 32bit Sun Hardware? thanks

    Hi,
yes, it does work on a 32 bit hardware, but you need a 64 bit version of Solaris.

  • Solaris 8 on V215

Is it possible to install Solaris 8 on a V215 server?
I know it's not supported, but could it be done for test purposes?
Can't try to install since I don't have the server right now.

    Follow rukbat's advice !
The original poster should call their account rep, else Sun Sales directly for whatever info is needed.
I agree that Sol-8 will never run on the hardware.
Not supported means, won't run and not maybe break something.
These versions lack the proper kernel, that's the reason it won't even boot.
Last ship date (LSD) for Solaris 8 is February 16, 2007.
This is a link to the description
    http://www.sun.com/service/eosl/solaris/solaris_vintage_eol_5.2005.xml
I think when the V125 is shipped, they include a CD similiar to the OECD that you use to boot from and launch the Solaris 8 installation.
So, my question still remains: Is it possible (without support from sun) to install solaris 8 on th V215?
No, if the information from http://www.sun.com/servers/entry/v215/specs.xml#anchor5 is accurate.
These forums are only user-to-user, call Sun.

I am a new user of sun solaris . Yesterday I had configured the file /etc/inet/hosts but i missed to configure the file /etc/inet/netmask and /etc/inet/ipnodes, due to which server is not allowed me to login. Now what is the other way to login into server console. I am entering in the console using normal mode, should I try to login in using diagnostic mode., or is there any other way to login into and modify the file. I also need training videos of solaris configuration .

  • Broken pipe - Solaris 10, Sun T2000

    Hi,
    I have some problems..
So, there's one system I'm working with. It's made of 2 parts (both written in Java):
    - "normal" application, that works as a business logic server,
    - web application (build on Turbine framework, running on a Resin Application Server) - it works as a presentation layer,
These 2 parts are connected via TCP/IP socket connection - we use an ObjectOutputStream.
It normally works just fine (it's running on several different systems), but recenlty it has been installed on a new server machine and it's started to throw strange exceptions. Below there are informations about server machine, exceptions and code making connections.
We think, that It may be a problem with configuration of Solaris kernel or TCP/IP stack, but have no idea how to fix it.

  • Solaris 10, Sun Ray Server Software

    Hi,
I installed Solaris 10 on my x86 machine and managed to get it (eventually!) configured with a static IP etc.
I then began the install of Sun Ray Server Software and the first part went well. I then performed a reboot as requested using
sync;sync;init 6As this occured i spotted an error saying gzip problem due to not enough space when doing something with the boot_archive. I have since not been able to reboot my machine as I get Error 28: Selected Item cannot fit into memory etc. I found an article on the forums saying log in using the cd to a single user shell, rename the boot_archive to boot_archive.disabled and reboot. This has not had any affect. When rebooting the same error about gzip and space occured and then the error 28 appered. I tried this several times to no avail - once not getting the error 28 but the system not booting and freezing on teh grub window.
    Any ideas?!
    Regards
    Richard

I am not familiar with the boot_archive bit but I have used srss for ages without a problem like that. What kind of system is it on?

  • CPU temperature is too high in Solaris 10 sun fire v890 machine

    Hi,
I just installed Solaris 10 on a sun fire v890 machine. I used the prtdiag -v command to check the system.
However, It appears to me that the CPU temperatures is higher than the temperature range specified in the technical specification. The server is a standalone node that does not connect to the network or process anything.
Is it a problem? Thank you.

    Hi Rukbat,
    Thanks for your reply.
I have displayed the verbose prtdiag -v on the v890 machine.
However, I couldn't find the hard-coded operational ranges. Could you please advise?

  • Solaris containers + sun ray server

    just some theoretical question...
would it be possible to put a sun-ray session into a solaris container, stop it, move it to some other machine, and restart it there?
never played with containers and maybe i am compleatly wrong here...

well, i'd say that dhcp is not an issue. i am running srss without local dhcp and the clients in some other networks using other ip's/dhcp (i know -- unsupported config, but it has it's advantages).
i've just read some docs about containers, and it seems, since opensolaris b36 it is possible to stop containers and restart them on some other node... but it seems that patchlevels and kernel needs to be the same... ...so it would not be possible to move container+srss, update server A, move container back and update server B.
may you explain, in more detail, the CAM idea?

  • Is there a way to disable interrupts for a Solaris 9/ sun OS 5.9 machine

I am trying to figure out if there is a way to disable interrupts in solaris 9 on a sun 5.9 sparc9 machine, while under lock. I don't want the process to get bumped under lock. I have been looking for a way to do it and have come up empty handed. Am I just missing something? -Thanks

Thanks for the response, I understand that using real time scheduling I can still be preempted. I also understand how to solve my problem on a multiple CPU machine. Unfortunately I only have that luxery on part of the system. There is a part of the system, 7% of the processes, that run on a single cpu machine. This is a customer requirement, I can't change it. What I want to do is possibly take advantage of the priority inheritance features of the mutex locks, however, I believe this needs to be enacted as root, since they need to run real time and it seems that you need to be root to enable the real time features. However, to propose this as an option to solve my issue, I need to show that it works. I have kicked off a process using priocntl with RT and a priority of 11, and I can see them run as real time and in a priority level of 111 using TOP, but when I put code in so I know they are in the mutex portion of the code, I don't see a priority change. I created a mutex with the protect option and a priority ceiling of 5. Does anyone know if this would be reflected anywhere. I tried opening an xterm and using a priocntl -d, but I see priority 11 even when it is in a mutex with a ceiling of 5. I would have expected it to go to five. Just in case I had the levels backwards, I also tried a ceiling of twenty and there still was no change. How can I test the priority inheritance capability? Does anyone know which call would reflect the priority change? I just need to show it does something in order to propose the change at that low of a level in our system code. Thanks again everyone who has tried to help me understand this.

  • (HELP)Configuring two Solaris 10 sun servers for FAILOVER.

    Hi guys,
i have two sunfire v440 servers which i have loaded Solaris 10 OS on them and i have installed a Web and DNS server on them..However i would like to synchronize both the servers for FAILOVER,so that incase one is down (crashes),the second can take over.I believe their is a daemon which can be used to accomplish this task.
Any ideas on what daemon in Solaris 10 that can do the Heartbeat synchronisation of two Solaris 10 servers,so that when one crashes, the second takes over.I will appreciate your assistance on this sys-admins.

  • New to Sun and Solaris

Hello all. I am currently a Sr. System Administrator right now for IBM AIX and SCO UNIX OS systems and I am wanting to start learning the Sun Solaris OS and getting familiar with that in hopes to become a System Administrator for those OS as well. I know zero about Solaris or Sun right now other than what I have read about.
Anybody have suggestions on how I start learning Sun Solaris? I see Solaris 10 is a free download for x86 platforms. I was going to install that on my laptop as a dual boot for Solaris 10 and my current laptop Windows XP OS. Would that be a good start in learning Sun Solaris system? Would anybody recommend taking the training courses that Sun provides or would that be a waste of time? Most of the AIX and SCO UNIX OS I come to know and master is from learning on my own and later on taking some advanced admin courses in that.
My company is thinking changing to Sun Solaris OS and servers to replace the SCO UNIX servers so I just wanted to know any suggestions on how to get familiar with where I can get to the point of install, setup, admin Solaris servers. Thanks!

    hi " mmitguy "
    while I can't comment on
in hopes to become a System Administrator for those OS as well
part but I would like to respond on dual boot part, as I've installed Solaris 10 with Win XP recently on a single HD of my Dell 9150 Desktop. First I backed up all my data & tried to resize (using Partition Magic 8) existing Win XP partition (there was only one) & create new partition but it failed & I had to re-install Win XP.
So I would recommend first to make sure that u have Win XP installation disk & driver / utility installation disk available. And after backing all ur data from ur laptop re-install Win XP & while re-installing create 2 partitions. Install Win XP & install display / graphics card, modem, network etc drivers.
Installing Solaris 10: I downloaded Solaris 10 11/06 from Sun & burnt a DVD & ran into lots of problems so i posted this:
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5137821&tstart=15
After that, some one from this same forum suggested to install Solaris Express Developers Edition 02/07 instead. ( http://developers.sun.com/solaris/downloads/solexpdev/download.jsp )
I re-installed Solaris, this time Dev Edition 02/07 and that was very, very simple compare to Solaris 10 11/06.
    Good Luck!

Ping is working properly. Do you have any ideea how can i fix this problem?
    Thank you.

    Yeahh, guys!!!
I was trying to establish a two-node cluster using VirtualBox + Solaris x86 + Sun Cluster 3.2. The node where I was running scinstall to configure my cluster environment was rebooting the other node in the end of the configuration process but it was hanging in the "Rebooting node01..." message just because it was not able to establish the cluster.
After see your comments, I changed Solaris x86 to Solaris Express Community Edition and Sun Cluster to Cluster Express and now everything is working fine!
    Thanks!

  • Solaris Installation on Sun Blade 1500

    hi all,
I tried installing the Solaris for Sun Blade 1500 and after installation. The Xserver wont start .
It says unable to start the Xserver
    Failed to initialise core devices
    SUNWmouse ioctl on /dev/mouse
and failed to start Xserver on display:0
but i tried ssh -XCPY from a client and i could work with the gnome-session fully .
Do i need to upgrade or add some more packages from the DVD ?
and on some SUN BLADE 1500 machines ,i get this error when i tried to boot from cdrom
    Unable to Read disk label
what can i do for the above problems .
    thanks
    taggy

If you feel comfortable with command-line interfaces, you could boot the cdrom from the "ok" prompt using the following command:
    boot cdrom - install w
(note all the spaces around "-"), this little command will force the installer to use a CLI instead of the default X-installer...

  • Migrating Linux shadow-file MD5 passwords to Sun DSEE for Solaris/SunMail

    Hello all,
We are about to undertake migration of an outdated mail server based on RedHat 7.2 and Sendmail/ipop3d to Sun Messaging Server (JCS6u2). While the filesystem/mail are not a problem, we're stuck at the question of how to best migrate old users' identities.
The old Linux system used user names and password hashes stored in /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow files. Hashes are mostly MD5 and a few seem like crypt.
Question is: are there known incompatibilities between password hashes (algorithms, expected format) in Linux and Sun products - Solaris/DSEE/SunMail?
That is, if we just take strings like these:
    usemd5:$1$Wu7IqFT5$TeUht3OMdeSSBB3Vab4dB.:11262:0:::::134540116
    usecrypt:DD2kEwCD8nies:10220::::::
Can we simply place the second column as the userPassword attribute in Sun DSEE and expect that users would be able to log in to LDAP-enabled Solaris and Sun Mail with their old passwords knownst only to them?
If not, is there some simple modification/translation of such hashes to a format accepted by Sun products?
Or are these formats/algorithms known to be incompatible somehow in a fatal manner, so our only option would be generation of new passwords for Sun DSEE and its clients?
    Thanks,
    //Jim

Just to reclarify or throw more information:
    a password - cleartext value - testuser1 has 32-digit HEX value as - 41da76f0fc3ec62a6939e634bfb6a342
Same password when converted to Base64 pattern becomes - Qdp28Pw+xippOeY0v7ajQg==
But when I use pwdhash utility in DSE after configuring CRYPT to use MD5 hashes it becomes -
    {crypt}$md5$$LiB/H70zXr3xfQPoXVuUQ1
    I used below command :
    pwdhash -D /opt/SUNWdsee/dsee6/ds6/slapd-oha-dev -s CRYPT testuser1
Actual hash value of pwdhash is -LiB/H70zXr3xfQPoXVuUQ1 with rest of the prefix is to meet RFC standard and salt and algo name separator.
I am wondering if Sun MD5 default uses any salt even when I haven't used or DS does it. Or if any other MD5 option is there which can be used.
    Thanks,
    Gaurav
