Solaris 8 on Ultra 5

I would like to know what the mimimum hardware requirements are for installing Solaris 8 on a Ultra-5.

Here are the minimums as listed at http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/ds/ds-sol8oe
System Requirements
SPARC (32- and 64-bit) or Intel Architecture (32-bit)      platforms
Disk space: 600 Mbytes for desktops; one Gbyte for servers
Memory: 64 Mbytes minimum
Were you thinking about a specific minimum on the Ultra 5?

Theres a libGL and a libGLU.
They may provide what you need.

In fact, there are pre-compiled Solaris binaries here:

  • Solaris 10 10/08 x86 (Ultra 20 M2) install issues

    Morning everyone,
After backing my workstation up, I performed a full update of a fully patched (OS and BIOS) 11/06 Solaris 10 Ultra 20 M2 machine (Opteron 1210). However, shortly after installing I get repeated start failures, and even rebooting off of the 10/08 DVD gives me the exact same error. The error, which occurs right after detection of
ng0 and ng1, states (my comments are in <>):
    WARNING: /PCI@0,0/PCI108e,534d@5/disk@0,0 (sd0):
Error for command: read(10) Error Level: Retryable
    Requested Block: <number always varies. i.e. 138462966) Error Block:<same as requested block>
    Vendor: ATA Serial Number: <nothing>
    Sense Key: Aborted Command
ASC: 0x0 (no additional sense info), ASCQ: 0x0, FRU 0x0
Now, after first installed I got this error, but several reboot attempts got me into the working system, and I rebooted several times again and didn't see the error. I performed my regular restore (/export/home, /opt, ect..) and updated the system from Update Manager. However from that point forward, the machine will not get past this error. Now even performing a full re-install of 10/08 lands me with the same exact error.
The md5 checksum of the iso image checks out, and I've written/verified the data on the DVD with two different burning programs. I've even written the information to two different brands of DVD-R will no luck. The slices are standard UFS, and it's a plain Sun Workstation with 4G of memory.
Suggestions as to what the error is referring to? I've Googled and searched this forum in vain to see any thing that might relate, but no luck.

An update for anyone who might run into a similar issue:
I narrowed down to an issue with the ata controller and 10/08 ( 05/08 works like a charm). In the release notes, the following entry appears:
"x86: ata Timeouts During Boot (6586621)
ata driver timeouts might occur during system boot on Intel multiprocessor systems. These timeouts occur when the root device is on a drive with the HBA controller bound to the legacy ata driver. These timeouts lead to a momentary hang, hard hang, or a panic during system boot with console messages similar to the following:"
So, even though this machine is running an AMD 1210 Opteron (perhaps the entry should read: ".. on x86 multiprocessor machines..." instead), I am affected by this bug.
I was able to successfully load u6 on the machine once, and once that happened 10/08 would fail with that ugly error message. However, by disabling the MP support in Solaris (in kbd mode so that Solaris only sees a single processor), it booted just fine.
Once I got into the working system (I assume I could have done it from a live CD like milax) I disabled the microcode support by following the instructions listed in Workaround 5 (mv/renaming the microcode entry). After multiple warm and cold restarts to test the functionality of the fix, the machine passed with flying colors.
Lastly, the other option, listed as Workaround 1, was to specify in the BIOS the use of AHCI mode. Unfortunately, the 1.52 BIOS does not offer this feature.

  • How to redirect the output display on Ultra 5 box.

    Hello,
    Good day to you.
I have issues with redirecting display output to my console server (which is configured with cyclades switch) on a newly installed solaris 10, Ultra 5 box.
I could access the output display on the monitor when I connect it directly to the serial port. But I also have my parallel port connected to cyclades switch which is primarily being used for accessing multiple servers thro' one single console server.
When I try to access my ultra 5 box thro' console server, the display not getting redirected over there..I did checked the port from cyclades switch front, it did work well with other machines.
Looks like some work needs to be done at Ultra 5 box level so that the parallel port can send output signals to the respective port on cyclades switch and consequently to the console server.
    Any thoughts ??
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    Good day to you.
Apologize for quoting "Parallel" port. It is a in-built 25pin serial connector placed next to regular 15 pin serial port.
Just to make a point here, this 25 pin serial connector has an external converter attached with other side having RJ45 jack.
CAT5 cable connected between switch port to this RJ45 jack.
I did tested this converter with another machine and could able to access the display on my console server. So it seems to be the connectivity from serial port to switch port works fine.
Adding to that, this ultra 5 box with the current connectivity set up was working fine until I rebuild this machine. I was very well accessing this box thro my console server. There was no changes done except rebuilding the operating system.
I think some work needs to be done at the ultra 5 box level to get this 25pin serial connector to act.
    Thanks.

  • Solaris 10 panic

    Hi,
I just upgraded my Solaris 9 ultra 10 box to Solaris 10. When the machine tries to boot and after starting the root device it crashes. I don't have a serial console, so I'm not able to paste the error, but it's something about usb. One of the messages I see is "consconfig get_usb_kb_path".
My guess is that, since my ultra 10 does not support USB, the kernel panics trying to configure the USB devices (?). Is it enough to remove the USB device from /etc/driver_aliases ? I cannot try this now, so if you have any suggestions I would appreciate.
    Thank you.

Well, I couldn't find the reason for the crash. Since I had an empty
9GB slice on the disk, I decided to install a "fresh" solaris 10
version on that slice. It's working fine, so it's not a problem with
the detection of the USB subsystem. Maybe later I can connect a serial
    console to see what's happening.

  • File name completion

I am running Korn Shell on Solaris (on SUN Ultra 60) and have a problem with file name completion.
Prior to Korn I ran C-shell and after set filec=on the filename completion worked ok.
Although my understanding is that Korn shell have this feaure built in I also tried export filec=on but it did not help. I am using Esc-Esc to attempt the file name completion. By the way Esc-= works and I get a list of options. Can anybody help? Thanks.

    Hello
I am using Solaris 8 ultra-80, found this discussion and into the same problem, before this i used to work on HPUX 11.0/11i never had problem on "filec" as i believe this is "by default" set in ksh.
But on solaris i am finding it difficult to use "file completion" ( i mean filec: using ksh -o vi).
Could some one suggest!!, how do i go about!!.
I don't want to use ksh -o emacs, as i am happy using "ksh -o vi".

  • Socket connection - Available Port Numbers

    Hi,
I am trying to connect to a server running on Unix through my NT client. This is being done via socket connection and by supplying IP Address of the machine plus the port number.
My server is running on Unix, Solaris 8, Ultra 5 machine. I want to know if there is some allowable range of Port Numbers on the Unix machine?
Or is it that I can use any number starting from 1 to infinite as my port number?
    Thanks.

The ports below 1024 are reserver for only the "root" user and 65536 is usually the max port
number available. Ports below 1024 are also reserved for a user in the Administrators group on NT and W2K.
Actually, the maximum port number is 65535 since IPv4 port numbers are 16 bit quantities and that is the maximum value of a 16 bit quantity.

  • -lresolv not found

    hi,
I encountered a problem while compiling cryptcat on solaris 8, ultra 5.
    error:
ld: fatal: library -lresolv: not found
    Things that I tried:
    1) within the makefile, i had specify the options -L/lib -L/usr/lib/
    2) set and export $LD_LIBRARY_PATH, but still cant get it to work.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Regards.

    Ok, so....
I was, in fact, missing a couple headers initially, and after starting over (working from a fresh tarball) I was able to get past this. I think i had failed to set the include path for sasl and gssapi
    HOWEVER-
I had a big problem with a macro for LOOKUP_NAME and LOOKUP_GETENT. Evidently, IRS support (part of the bind support in nss-ldap) was triggered all the time due to the irs files being present in the tarball despite their not being a part of my system. This caused the macro to be redefined go all nutty. To fix it, I commented out the have IRS junk in config.h, resulting in NSSWITCH being ok again.
    Built fine after that.

  • After installing Sun Studio 11, libfsu.a in Sun Forte  6 is removed.

I have Sun compilers 5.0 and 6.2 on my Sun Solaris 8 Ultra Sparc machine. After installing Sun Studio 11, some library files (e.g., libfsu.a in Sun Forte 6) from the old compilers were removed. What is wrong with my installation?
Note that I install the different versions of compilers in separate directories.

After the 1st failed installation of Sun studio 11,
did you making sure that Sun studio 11 is not exist
on your system before re-install Sun studio 11? The
rule is you can have different Sun studio releases
on the same system, but you can not have the
multiple copy of the same release on the same
system, even though they are in a totally separate
directory. If Sun Studio 11 exist after 1st fail
installation, you need to un-install it first before
    you re-start 2nd installation attemp.
Installation of Sun Studio 11 should not remove files
from older releases, but we know the case it did mess
up package of the older release before.
-NgocNo, after 1st install failed due to insufficient disk space, I did not uninstall Studio 11. After I deleted some user files to free up disk space, I run the install again, specified the same directory for installation, and just select Sun Performance Libraries. The installation seems to finished successfully. Perhaps this is one scenario where old versions can get messed up.

  • Ddi_dma_addr_bind_handle crashes the system

    Hi all,
Mandar here again. I am developing a driver for a NIC under Solaris 7 Ultra SPARC. I am in the process of getting 32 bit virtual address for my network device. I am doing this by using dma calls. I could allocate dma handle using ddi_dma_alloc_handle. After this i allocated a dma object of size 8k using ddi_dma_mem_alloc. This call also succeeded. Then I tried to bind this dma object to a cookie, which will ultimately get me the required 32 bit address, using ddi_dma_addr_bind_handle.
This call is resulting into a system crash. The crash doesnt give me any hint as of what is the cause behind it. I checked all the input parameters n times but m could not find any problem with them. At the time of crash i can see error message disappearing fast, something like
devfsadm error: misalignment. Dont know what this meant.
I was getting a similar error when my dma_attr structure was a member of a device specific structure and i had found that this structure being a member of the device specific structure was not aligned on 8 byte boundary. When i took it out of the structure it got proper alignment 8 bytes and worked fine. I made sure that none of the parameters being passed to addr_bind_handle are a member of any structure so that there wont be any problem of address misalignment.
Not able to understand what the problem is!!
Any inputs to my problem are welcome!
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi
Perhaps, you are facing the SUn Bug ID 4451967 which is fixed in Solaris 8 with the latest kernel jumbo patch 108528-14. This patch is freely available for download from http://sunsolve.sun.com. Install the same and see if it resolves the issue.

  • Sun, take responsibility for appserver7 installation problems!

    *** First set of problems...
I'm having installation problems on both Solaris 8, (Ultra 480, 1GB RAM, latest recommended patches) and a Windows 2000 Server with SP2 (1GHz P4, 512MB RAM).
I chose default installation directory and then the install
complains that Pointbase 4.2 should be installed into the
same directory etc. Cannot unselect the Sample apps and
    Pointbase options.
    *** Second problem...
I have an instance previously installed on Windows 2000
Professional with SP2.(1GHz PIII, 512MB RAM, 5GB space)
When i start application server 7.0 , then i get the following
    message:
Could not start the instance: domain1:admin-server
Server failed to start:abnormal subprocess termination
Could not start the instance: domain1:server1
Server failed to start: abnormal subprocess termination
Could not start one or more instances in the domain:domain1
Could not start one or more domains
Press any key to continue ...

When you say that you choose the default installation directory and then the installer complained about Pointbase, what platform where you using? Had you already attempted installs in the past or uninstallations that did not complete properly?
For your second issue, did you happen to change the host name of your machine? Try cranking up the log level (edit server.xml) to see what's causing the instances to fail on startup. Did the application ever start up after install? What things did you do just prior to the server exhibiting this behaviour?

  • Problem getting quadword aligned DMA address

    Hello,
I am writing a block device driver under Solaris 8 Ultra 80 SPARC. My device needs quadword aligned DMA addresses. How can I get this from the DDI calls? Currently thsi is what i am doing:
    1. Settting up ddi_dma_attr_t structure as
    static ddi_dma_aatr_t mydma_attr
    DMA_ATTR_V0,
    0x00000000,
    0xffffffff,
    0x00ffffff,
    0x8 // quad word alignment
    0x1,
    0x8,
    0xffffffff
    0xffffffff
    max_desc //s/g list
    512,
    0,
    2. Use ddi_dma_alloc_handle wihich among other things takes this mydma_attr structre as its parameters.
    3. Thsi provides a dma_handle which is used by ddi_dma_buf_bind_handle() which fills in the cookie cookie_dma of type dma_cookie_t.
As per the documentation this cookie_dma.dmac_laddress shloud be used to program 64 bit DMA engine. But this is not working.
Should I be using ddi_dma_addr_bind() call instead of ddi_dma_buf_bind_handle? What is the difference?
    Thanks
    Madhura

    The difference between ddi_dma_buf_bind_handle(9F) and
ddi_dma_addr_bind_handle(9F) is that the former is used to bind a DMA handle to a system buffer and the latter is used to bind a DMA handle to a virtual address, generally allocated by ddi_dma_mem_alloc(). If you are performing DMA to/from a system buffer, ddi_dma_buf_bind_handle(9F) is the correct function to use.
If the DMA is not working, it is likely that the attributes are not set correctly.

  • Sun Studio Express Feb 2007, lingering dialog box upon Debug

When I try to debug a project (say the Freeway sample application) in Sun Studio Express Feb 2007 on Solaris x86, Ultra 20, the following dialog box lingers. I am able to close it manually and debug normally however:
    Loading library
    /usr/lib/liblayout.so.1

Yes, I've also seen this a number of times. I don't remember what was the problem exactly (dbx <-> IDE miscommunication?), but I believe it's gone now. Please wait for stable release , it should be available soon.

  • TFTP Server Setting

    Folks,
This is driving me crazy. I'm trying to set up a tftp server on Solaris 9 Ultra 30. Followed the steps in creating a /tftpboot directory, and chowned it root, with read access to others. Removed the # sign from the /etc/inetd.conf file. And left every thing the same except for the tftpd with -d option and restarted /etc/init.d/inetsvc. To test this, I try tftp on the same serve, it time out when I try to get a file. From anther machine, the server would send "icmp destination unfreachable (udp port 69 unreachable). I the port is for tftp and it's listed in the /etc/services file. I don't get it why inetd claims it's not avaialble. Also, the -d option in the /etc/inetd.conf for the tftpd does not display any messages on the console. Can any one help please?
    Thx,
    Alex

Instead of "restarting inetsvc" it is easier to send the HUP signal to inetd.
    pkill -HUP inetd
If you kill it and restart it, then be aware that it will inherit the environment
variables from your SHELL. See inetd(1m) for more info.

  • Solaris 8 on Ultra 2 Enterprise installation problem...

I've a Sun Ultra 2 Enterprise with dual 200 Mhz UltraSPARC I and I tried to install Solaris 8, I download the binaries from Sun site and I burnt the CDs. Insert them in the CDROM drive, I type "boot cdrom", the installation started and it started also the grafical interface, the mouse doesn't work (the cursor still in the center of the screen) and appear a Console windows that asks if Solaris should use the slice c0t0d0s1 for swap, but the keybord (I use a type 5C keyboard and mouse) don't write, so I can't type "yes", but STOP+A works and on OPB I can write.
In the end, on the grafical interface of installation mouse doesn't work and I can't write (works only STOP, arrows, ecc...)
    Thanks, Paolo.

Well, to install the box you could type
    boot cdrom - install w
that will give you the textbased install GUI if you are booting from Solaris CD 1/2 . You might have to get a working mouse later, but this will at least install the OS for you.
