Solaris 8 patching

Hello,
I have recently brought up my two old solaris 8 boxes and want to bring them all up to data, but it seems that i can no longer get the patch files as i don't have the Sun Contract Number?
I have logged into https://support.oracle.com/CSP/ui/flash.html
but cannot proceed.
Where do i get the latest solaris8 patches? Or what is the procedure to get a Sun Contract Number, I have the Solaris8 licence number that came with the CD

Hi.
Patches for Solaris from Oracle - not free. You require buy service contract for get access to it.
So get Patches for Solaris 8 you neeed special say about it, becouse it's not coverd by standart premier support.
( Solaris 8 - extended support ).
http://www.oracle.com/us/support/library/lifetime-support-hardware-os-337182.pdf
When you buy service contact - you get customer support identifier ( CSI) that require for support.oracle.com

  • Solaris Patch Manager gets status:302 behind Proxy

    Hi Colleagues,
    I am trying to get Solaris Patch Manager on my Solaris 8 up and running.
    But if I say "smpatch analyze", the smpatch just reports a "Response code was 302" I think this means something like: "temporary moved".
    I think my problem is, that the proxy doesn't follow the moved object.
    Can anybody tell me where I can manualy download the detectors.jar and patchdb.zip?

    Any news on this posting? I'm trying to do the same thing, as I dont want to use a caching proxy to download patches, I just want to use
    a local source to perform analysis, downloads, and updates.
    Cheers.

  • How do I find the latest Critical Sun Solaris Patches on Oracle site

    Hello
    How do I find the latest critical Solaris Patches available to the users. I was searching the list on Oracle's site it's hard to determine which patch is critcal or not. When I type uname -a this is what returns Generic_142909-17.
    Any help you could provide would be appreciated.

    Sorry, I wrote "Monthly" when I meant to write "Quarterly". Apologies for the confusion. My bad.
    From - http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/topics/security/alerts-086861.html
    They are released on the Tuesday closest to the 15th day of January, April, July and October. Starting 2011, the scheduled dates for the release of Critical Patch Updates will be on the Tuesday closest to the 17th day of January, April, July and October. The next four dates are:
    * 19 April 2011
    * 19 July 2011
    * 18 October 2011
    * 17 January 2012
    The CPU for the Solaris Operating System is a rebranded snapshot of the Recommended OS Cluster. The rebranding involves only superficial changes to the patch cluster, with the actual patch content remaining unchanged. The patches contained in this patch cluster are considered the most important and highly recommended patches for Solaris 10. They provide the least amount of change required to address known security, data corruption and availability issues.
    If there's a particular CVE Alert which you're vulnerable to or interested in, then the fix will be released within the patch that corresponds to the area of code the vulnerability affects. You can then apply that patch and it's requirements separate to the clusters. Next time you apply the cluster it will either install the latest rev of the patch or skip it if you have the latest installed already.
    The Recommended Patch Cluster bundle is a much larger collection of patches and contains all the latest patches (at the time of release) which include Solaris updates, Security, and Sun Alert fixes. Note that we merged "Recommended Patch Cluster/Kernel Jumbo Patchset" and the "Sun Alert Patch Clusters" back in June 2010. See http://blogs.sun.com/patch/entry/merging_the_solaris_recommended_and for more information regarding what happened and why.
    Of course there will be a large overlap between the "Recommended OS Cluster" and the "Critical Patch Updates" patchsets will be rolled in to the "Recommended OS Cluster" whenever it's cut and released.
    There's a lot of information in the README files for each cluster so you may want to read those to understand the subtle differences.

    Steve

  • Solaris patching on solaris 10 x86

    just wondering if anyone can assist. i have just installed solaris 10 x86 recommended patches on a 16 disks server. where first 2 disks are mirrored called rpool, and remaining 14 disks are raid z called spool. upon installing the patches successfully and rebooting server, i am coming up with the following error:

    rebooting...
    It looks like the solaris 10 os cannot find zfs filesystem and keeps on rebooting in normal solaris os mode, but when I go to safe mode and type: zfs list, I can see zfs rpool (mirrored) file system and cannot see the zfs spool (raid z) file system, any ideas on how i can fix the boot problem and get zfs spool back in the safest way possible?...

    I finally figured it out. It seems that kernel patch 137138-09 was the culprit. It took me a while to test each kernel patch but I found out that if you have a mirrored volume or a virtual logical volume this will affect you. Also, after I did all this testing I finally found the sunsolve article referencing this patch. Seems you can install the patch, but you have to install 125556-01 first. Here's the article: http://sunsolve.sun.com/search/document.do?assetkey=1-66-246206-1

  • Are Solaris Patches ONLY available for a fee?

    I have tried repeatedly to get Patch Manager for Solaris 9, which we're running on a brand new V240. The application we purchased it for is not yet certified to be binary compatible with SOL 10, so we were forced to go back to SOL9.
    SunSolve makes PatchManager and PatchPro available for free download to Solaris 8 users. Update Connection is available to Solaris 10 users. Solaris 9 users seem to be in a position to pay for a service plan to get updates.
    We purcased 2 Sun Servers at the same time. The x86 server is running Linux, which we have no trouble getting free updates for, particularly security updates.
    I'm thinking that maybe I need to switch our Sun SPARC server to OpenSolaris to get the same kind of benefits we are used to with Linux.
    Comments, suggestions, anyone?
    Thanks!
    John

    After being told by many people in these forums that I could get the PatchManager and patches here for free, and going thru much frustration trying, I called the school's local Sun dealer.
    The Sun dealer told me that since Sun released Solaris for FREE download, Sun is requiring a support contract to get updates and patches. Basically, the support contracts pay for the "FREE" O/S.
    The Sun web pages kept insisting I have a support contract, so what the Sun dealer told me concurs with what I ran into on here.
    Thanks for trying to help. I do appreciate it.

  • Solaris Patching/SAN Boot

    I have just created an ABE on a SAN device, upgraded it and then booted from it.
    Its been a long journey, and involved a SR with oracle.
    I was new to it and am astonished at how hard it has been. Not hard in the sense that anything was over complicated, but the tangle mess of patch levels and gathering information on server firmware, SAN boot, HBA firmware, patches etc has been a nightmare. Not sure whether its me just new to patching solaris 10 etc, but I have literally trawled through a couple of dozen documents, countless web browsing and a few grey hairs  just to achieve this.
    I will hold my hand up, some of it was of our own making - I was patching a system that had not been touched in a number of years.
    Anyone had a similar experience or does it get easier?!?!?

    I really don't like san boot for operating system. You have too many points of failure for the basic operation.
    Anyway, during installation, ensure that you access the disk using just one path (using zoning for example). After you enable and configure MPxIO, you could enable other paths.

  • Solaris  patch update

    Hi ,
    I have two questions in solaris 10.
    1.Is there any equivalent YUM (in linux) in solaris-10?if so , can you provide the details as to how use them to update patch?
    2. equivalent of RPM ( in Linux) in solaris - 10.
    Thanks

    Hi,
    1. No YUM alike on Solaris but you can use pca to manage patches -> http://www.par.univie.ac.at/solaris/pca/
    2. pkg-config (1)- return meta information about installed libraries
    pkgadd (1m)- transfer software packages to the system
    pkgadm (1m)- manage packaging and patching system
    pkgask (1m)- stores answers to a request script
    pkgchk (1m)- check package installation accuracy
    pkginfo (1)- display software package information
    pkginfo (4)- package characteristics file
    pkgmap (4)- package contents description file
    pkgmk (1)- produce an installable package
    pkgparam (1)- display package parameter values
    pkgproto (1)- generate prototype file entries for input to pkgmk command
    pkgrm (1m)- remove a package from the system
    pkgtrans (1)- translate package format

  • Applying Solaris Patches that Require Single User Mode

    Some OS patches require single user mode and reboot. Does the standard Solaris plugin patch management handle this? If not, could I write my own patch component and simply add "init 1; patchadd; init 6" to the execnative?
    Thanks - Jay

    I can't speak about the Solaris plugin, unfortunately, but a single execnative call wouldn't cover what you're trying to accomplish. There's an RFE for the core SPS system to add this capability, but I don't know that it will be added soon. Remember that when you switch runlevels, a number of start and stop scripts are invoked, shutting down and starting up a number of services. To do what you want to do, you'd have to have a start script for the RA in runlevel 1. You'd also have to have a way for the RA to execute a command on startup which isn't possible today. There'd have to be a way for the MS to deposit a command for the RA to execute, restart the RA in runlevel 1, the RA would have to read the command on startup and execute it, then restart the RA to runlevel 3 (or 6, whatever is your default or previous runlevel). It's all doable, to be sure, but not with changes to the core product.

  • 10gR2 RDBMS required packages - Solaris patch 112760 is not installed

    Hi,
    Run RDA before 10gR2 installation:
    Test [ FAILED ] : Patch 112760 is not installed = adequate
    Trying to apply this patch:
    # patchadd -d /export/home/~/patches/112760-18
    Checking installed patches...
    One or more patch packages included in
    112760-18 are not installed on this system.
    Patchadd is terminating.
    From the readme file, it is trying to apply a patch for a C compiler, which you don't have on this system.
    Keywords: c 5.5 security
    Synopsis: C 5.5: Patch for S1S8CC C compiler
    Date: Jun/22/2005
    Unbundled Product: Sun ONE Studio 8 Compiler Common C
    Not sure why oracle would require this patch when the system doesn't have a licensed compiler on it. Can anybody explain why this is the case?
    According to Oracle, patch 112760 for Solaris 8 and Solaris 9 is required for:
    PL/SQL native compilation, Pro*C/C++, Pro*FORTRAN, Oracle Call Interface, Oracle C++ Call Interface, Oracle XML Developer's Kit (XDK).
    Unfortunately I am not sure if I should be concerned with this particular patch.
    Please advice.

    Hi,
    I have many ORA-7445 in RMAN ( CATALOG DATABASE ) with native database.
    The DATABASE is also in AL32UTF8 character set.
    I received the same stupid support answers.
    Can you made the following command on the core.
    plimit process_id
    and
    pmap on the core file.
    For an obvous raison the stack is limitied to 32M on solaris it's part of the Oracle excutable
    Check the stack process limit:
    plimit 27135 | egrep '27135|stack'
    27135: oracleariane (LOCAL=NO)
    stack(kbytes) 32768 65536
    plimit 4335 | egrep '4335|stack'
    4335: /opt/oracle/product/10.2.0_64/db_1/bin/tnslsnr listener_ariane -inheri
    stack(kbytes) 65536 65536
    Oracle executable limite the stack size to 32M even it can grow up to 65M.
    Its father listener has n't set this limit in the case 65M.
    FACT THAT IS THE LIMIT:
    pmap core | grep stack
    FFFFFFFF7E000000 32768K rw--- [ stack ]
    That is the same as the shadow process limit.
    FACT THAT THE SETRLIMIT IS USED N ORACLE
    nm $OH/bin/oracle | grep setrlimit
    [135743] | 106048704| 0|FUNC |GLOB |0 |UNDEF |setrlimit
    Stupid test case:
    cat e.c
    #include <stdio.h>
    #include <string.h>
    int fct( int nbr ) {
    char buffer [ 65536 ] ;
    ( void ) printf ( "%08d\n" , nbr ) ;
    ( void ) ( memset ( ( void *) buffer , (int) 255 , sizeof ( buffer ) ) ) ;
    ( void ) fct ( nbr + 1 ) ;
    int main ( int agrc , char * argv [] , char * arge [] )
    (void ) fct ( 0 ) ;
    return ( 0 ) ;
    cc -o e e.c
    ulimit -s 2000
    ./e
    00000000
    00000001
    00000030
    Segmentation Fault(coredump)
    pmap core | grep stack
    2000K rw--- [ stack ]
    That is the point.

  • How to manually install the Solaris Patch SunOS 5.10_x86: Kernel Patch ?

    Same as subject.

    download the patch from sunsolve.
    unzip it
    patchadd <patchnumber>
    reboot immediately.
    The recommended procedure is to do it with the machine in single user mode.
    But usually making the machine as quiescent as possible eg killing of daemons and runnin g jobs is sufficient.

    Hi,
    The last kernel patch for Solaris 10 x86 (sorry I cant remember the patch id, but the revision is 30), available from Sun Update Manager screwed up my system.
    The system is still booting but in maintenance mode: smf can't start because of repository corrupted. Given instructions to restore the repository does not work because / filesystem is mounted read-only...
    As I am not a solaris expert, I will reinstall it from CD. I hope I won't loose the filesystem.

    Patches 118668-14 and 118669-14 were fixes to patches 118668-13 and 118669-13 for change request 6609269 so both sets are for Java 1.5.0_13.
    I do not have details on when the 1.5.0_14 patches would be available but would assume soon.
    Installing the Java download bundle should not affect Update Connection.
