  • Spotlight: Include System Files by Default?

    Hello,
I like to use Spotlight as a general system cleaning preference, deleting old applications and their preference files, which are oftentimes in different locations.
Leopard allows one to include system files (including preferences) in Spotlight searches, but this is not enabled by default. Rather, one has to click the button after running the search and manually choose this option.
I would like to have this option enabled by default so this step is not repeated. Is there a way?
    Thank you in advance.

Try this. Click on the Desktop, CMD+F, set it up the way you want to, put in some generic search term, such as test, save it, open it, change the search term, and you should be good to go. There's no known way to change the defaults (at least i haven't tried). In Tiger modifying the default_smart.plist buried in the Finder.app did the trick, but I haven't been able to work out the salient details to do that in Leopard.

  • Does a time machine backup also restore system files?

In my case, I've deleted a lot of system files including desktop wallpapers and stuff, because I split my drive into two partitions, and started running very low on space on my primary partition. Now, I want to go back to two partitions, but I am unable to. Hence I have to format my Mac to do so. What my question is is this. If I use Time Machine after formatting to restore a backup, does that also include system files, like wallpapers and etc., or only user files? What about my keychain, browser data like cookies and other user data from my applications? Does all of that come back too? If it does, then I think that the other system files might come back too, right? I specifically remember deleting files from the Application Support folder. Also, every time after finishing a backup, my disk takes hours for encrypting the backup. Is that normal?
    PS : I use Mavericks.

    Malcolm J. Rayfield wrote:
Well, I did not maintain backups before I deleted the files. What then?
Download and reinstall Mavericks from the App Store.  It won't delete any user files.
    Correction
It should not delete any user files.
The OP should backup before starting this, in case of error.

  • Getting Spotlight to Search System Files by Default !??!

9 out of every 10 times I need to use spotlight, it's to find a system file. Usually something involving latex. I know that I can modify a finder search by choosing "other" + "System Files" + "include". But i'd rather just be able to turn that on by default. Is there a command line entry that I will force to spotlight to always search system files?

  • Can Solaris Os System  use as a server edition

Hai guys i am new to solaris system, and my company selected solaris system as our server edition....
Can any one enplane me the solaris OS system could we use as a server edition ?

You could run a Mac Pro using OS X Server. This would allow you to provided services to your small office network, and still use the Mac Pro as your desktop machine.
However, depending on what you are actually intending to use the server for, you may be better off with an older Mac to use for your server. Simple AFP and Windows file services are easily handled by just about any Mac, with the older Quicksilvers through the G5's being good choices for use as servers.
Having a dedicated server, instead of one sharing use as a desktop, means a more stable server for everyone else to use. It also will allow for a more consistent backup and archiving, then a dual role machine will usually be used for.
However, if you do not have the funds to repurpose an older machine, or buy a new machine for your server, then sharing a desktop with a small office group is indeed doable.
As for running Autocad and the server os at the same time, the answer is probably no. The reason is the bootcamp based Windows XP is a one or the other proposition, you are either running WIndows XP or OS X but not both.
On the other hand, if you use virtualization software, such as Parallel you can run both OS X and XP at the same time, however, current released versions of Parallel have limited graphic acceleration and 3D support. Newer beta versions of Parallel are starting to include better graphics support, including 3D. So the question is if AutoCad will run reasonably well under Parallel or not. I think the answer will depend on how you use AutoCad. If you use it mostly for 2D drawings, then it will probably run fine. If you use 3D rendering, you may need, at least for the time being, need to use Bootcamp to run Windows XP natively and get full graphics support.

  • Solaris 10, ftp file truncation

When I upload files/directories (binary) to my Solaris 10 system, occasionally the files get corrupted. Seems like some of the files are misssing several records at the beginning. I am using WS FTP Pro to upload the files from my PC to my Solaris 10 system. Could the new recvbuf and sendbuf parameters in the /etc/ftpd/ftpaccess file have anything to do with it.......

  • Ldap client with directory server 6.0 on solaris 9 systems

I have a directory server 6.0 running on a solaris 9 system. I have set up idsconfig, vlvindex and certificate database on the server side. The client ldap I am trying to set up is also solaris 9 system. I have set the certificate database on this ldap client using the Resource Kit certutil and import the server certificate to client certificate database. It seems the TLS secure connection did work between LDAP server and client. (I use the Resource Kit ldapsearch command to test it) I use 'ldapclient -v init ...' command using 'profileName=tlsprofile' to initialize the LDAP client and the information returned from that command said LDAP client configed sucsessfully. But when I run ldapaddent command to import /etc/passwd. I got error:
    Passwd container does not exist.
The ldapaddent command I ran like this:
    ldapaddent -v -f <passwd file> -D "cn=Directory Manager" passwd
Then I tried to use 'ldapclient -v manual ....' command to set up LDAP client. That command finishes succefully. But I still can not import /etc/passwd using ldapaddent with same error.
What is wrong with my set-up?
    Thanks,

I looked into the /var/adm/messages, and I have the following error:
ldap_cachemgr[1640]: [ID 605618 daemon.error] libldap: CERT_VerifyCertName: cert server name 'directory server' does not match 'hostname.mycompany.com': SSL connection denied
It seems I have problem with SSL certificate set-up. I did generate the server side 'hostname.mycompany.com' certificate then use the Resource Kit certutil import that certificate to the client side. Is that right way to do?
    Thanks,

  • MY system folder, including hidden folders are littered with duplicate folders and files with the suffix (from old Mac) How do I remove them

I have a Macbook Pro running Leopard 10.5.8. I had a problem with my my operating system (my fault, I moved a file I shoudnt have) couldnt boot up but was able to boot up from a backup. I managed to repair my original system except now all the system folders, including hidden folders are littered with duplicate folders and files with the suffix (from old Mac).  For the most part the dupes are an exact copy, but not always.  I want to remove them to free up space and cant imagine duplicate folders in the /system/library are not hindering my computer. But I dont know where to start and am afraid of doing irreparable damage. Any ideas

  • Patch Solaris 8 systems

    Hi
Is there anyone that has successfully been able to patch Solaris 8 systems using this tool? If you have a guide I would be happy. I have tried a couple of times but failed even though I have installed required patches.
    Regards Jerry

Does anything show up in the agent logs directory? You may have missing packages, such as SUNWbash, SUNWswmt, and SUNWgzip which are often missing on Solaris 8 systems.
If you are unable to find anything in the logs then I would advise opening a support case. Note that it is likely that we will ask you to collect information from the system using the [GDD script|http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/scripts/sunScripts/SUN-GDD_sun-connection-collect_noarch.tar.gz] . It would be worthwhile if you could collect the information whilst attempting to run a job against the system.
Run the script on the agent:
    # ./SUN-GDD_SunConnection.sh -debugAgent -auto 1800 -o /var/tmpThis will enable debug-level logging on the agent and automatically collect the logs after 30 minutes - you may wish to adjust the time to suit.

  • Verify LUN ID's on Solaris 9 System

    Hi Experts,
SAN Team just added LUN's to a Solaris 9 system. How can I verify that LUN's are added? Where can I find the LUN ID's?
Let me know if you need more information.
    Sunil.

luxadm probe - will all the fabric disk details
Note: If this is the first time lun is being provisioned to the said server, then there could be additional configuration required on the server side specific to your SAN environment.

  • Next release of Solaris operating system, any given date or estimation?

    Hi
Thank you for reading my post
Is there any given date or estimation about next release of:
    -Solaris Operating system
    -Solaris express
    -Solaris express developer edition
    Thanks

Solaris express/ sxde are on a 3 month release cycle. The last release
was sx 5/07, so any day now.
In theory, I believe that solaris 10 was supposed to be on a 6 monthly release cycle.
The last release was 11/06, so its slipped a little.
I believe the next release of S10 will be S10 8/07.
The releases often make it to the public in the month after their notional release date.
So I would expect them both sometime in the next month or so.

  • Reserve copy includes system files?

why I have the question is that I am not sure what the reserve copy includes when done through iTunes to the computer.
I have an assumption that my current iPhone is not officially unlocked, so if I make a reserve copy of it and then restore it to my new officially unlocked phone. Will such reserve copy ruin it? Or it does not replace system files, but just apps, data etc?

Have a look at this article about the content of your backup, the backup does not include the firmware for your device.

  • /etc/system file

How do I set a limit for a per process data size in the /etc/system file?
    Thank you.
    coscop

    Coscop,
You can't. The only limit you could set via /etc/system is
    file descriptor limits (rlim_fd_cur & rlim_fd_max). ie.:
    set rlim_fd_max = 4096
The rest, including the process heap segment, needs
to be set via shell (like in the .profile). Later version of
Solaris has the plimit command which allows to set the limit
on the running PID. Solaris Resource Manager was developed
around the Solaris 8 release time frame, I don't believe
it has a way to limit the heap segment per prccess either.
    Hope this helps.
