Solaris 8 - Ultra5 - EIDE 20GB Disk

Persuant to my post of 3/12 regarding a recent disk upgrade in an Ultra 5, from stock ATA100 EIDE to Western Digital WD200 20GB ATA100 EIDE, I've installed the recommende Solaris 8 upgrade.
I've performed a touch /reconfigure
and boot -r
However the system still only recognizes 8GB of the 20.
DiskSuite is installed and I've located the Solaris Management Console 2.0 with the disk tools.
However, I have not found a way to make the full 20GB available.
Does anyone have any additional insights?

Issue resolved at last.
I invoked a format-partition-purge and interrupted it midstream with the dd if=/dev/zero.... etc
Following that I manually restarted the Solaris 8 installer.
(I had booted from the cd and dropped to a shell window to perform the above)
Solaris 8 finally recongized the drive as a 20GB instead of an 8. I doubt my procedure was proper, but it worked.

Unable to install a Solaris OS in a Single disk slice

We are unable to install the Solaris-OS on a single slice disk.
We found that, only "Solaris 10 10/08 (U6)" release can support the single slice disk installation, prior release are not. Is it true ?

Whenever i try to installed the patch 137137-09, it required a below patch
0 For patch 137137-09, required patch 138866-01 does not exist.
And try this then
# patchadd 138866-01
The following requested patches will not be installed because

No patches to install.
I am not able to install this patch 138866-01, even i try with 138866-02 but not success.

How do I install dual-boot Solaris 8 and Solaris 9 on one hard disk ?

I tried to install Solaris 8 and Solaris 9 on same disk using CDs, but
the second installation overwrote the first Solaris which was installed
previoudly on the half-disk size partition of same disk.
How do I install two Solarises on one hard disk ?

There are no tricks to get Solaris to dual boot on the same drive. Just allocate and pick the free slices not used by the first Solaris install when you put in the second install. Technically speaking there is nothing preventing you from running seven separately bootable Solaris instances on the same drive (one of 8 available slices is overlap -- slice 2) provided you use a swap file on a root partition instead of reserving a whole slice for swap.

Solaris Management Console and X86 Disk

I am trying to use the Solaris Management Console to manage the 2 disks I have in my Intel PC. Both disk are allocated 100% to Solaris 10 and were formatted and partitioned by the installation program.
Why is it that when I use the Management Console it tells me that there is no Solaris FDISK partition and that I cannot manage the disk until I put a Solaris FDISK partition on them? It doesn't seem like the tool is all that useful if it cannot use the default format put on the disk by the install program.
On related note, why is it that auto layout during install creates partitions that are barely large enough to hold the OS? From what I can see it puts the bulk of the disk space into home for user home directories but this creates a problem when trying to install additional SW such as StarOffice.

Thanks for your help. I updated my root password from 4 charcters to 4charcters + 4 numerals , still SMC will not let me in. I updated 2 machines and both allow me to login as root (GUI) but SMC wants to confirm the password and will not let me in.
I have reinstalled (initialized rather than upgrade) Solaris 10 on one machine (Ultra60) , that machine now works fine. It allows me to login as root(GUI) ans the SMC accepts my root password
The machines are an Ultra10 and an Ultra60.
I choose to upgrade rather than a new install because of to much info to rebuild.

I added memory, a printer, and a CD Writer to my PC, and then I reinstalled solaris 8. At the point where it asks which drive to use, the only available drive, which is my C: drive, shows up with a negative disk space value. However, when I look at the partition size, it is 20 GB, and if I change it, it has no effect on the negative value. This is a reinstall of Solaris 8 onto the same drive. Is there a way to fdisk the drive. Solaris 8 won't do it, and Partition Magic seems to only work with linux, which does not seem compatible with Solaris?

Solaris 8 x86: Installation on disk connected via IDE controller

I have a PC with a Pentium 4 processor and the following IDE disks:
Disk 1 and 2 at the primary IDE bus.
Disk 3 connected via Promise Ultra 133 IDE controller.
I want to install Solaris 8 Intel x86 edition on Disk 3, but the installation
program only lists disks 1 and 2 as locations for install.
Is there any method how to get Solaris 8 installed on Disk 3?

thanks for the information.
There is no support for the Promise Ultra 133 IDE controller listed.
Also, searching the internet for a private developed driver was not
successful.
Anyway, I have tried to make a test installation on a hard disk
connected to the primary IDE controller and I detected a lot of
further installation problems with my equipments because of
missing or not properly identified drivers.
So I think I have to make further investigations on concepts
how to get Solaris 8 run in the best way.

Solaris 10 can not boot; disks drive offline

hi, solaris 10 can not boot the operating system has 10 luns and this enabled the multipathing, he settled patches and reboot the computer does not start showing me the following errors:

Can you list the steps that lead this problem, please?
The drive offline message is a symptom of some kind of connection or underlying hardware problem.
If there were no system changes that lead to this problem, then I would look for connection or hardware issues.

Wairning: No Solaris Fdisk Partition when managing disks in SMC

I just setup Solaris 10 on an old Dual Ultra Sparc II 400mhz system and I'm having a strange problem with the Solaris Management Console.
I'm using the SMC to manage my disks but everytime I select a disk I get the error "Warning: No Solaris Fdisk Partition" IF I continue and attempt to create the paritition it just fails. This is really strange. All of the disks give me this error, including the disk that I'm booting from.
Also, all the disks just say NAME as their label. Under Solaris 9 it actually showed me c0t1d0 etc..
All of the disks show up and operate fine when using other commands such as format or probe-scsi at the open boot prompt. As well all of the devices are present in /dev/rdsk.
Any help would be greatly apprecaited.

Instead of using SMC - why not use the format command - this utility has traditionally allowed the sysadmin to perform disk related tasks. If you plan to be "playing around" with disks on a solaris system - smc is not the tool. If you had intended to use ZFS - you're stuck with the command line (really sucks if you're dependent on GUIs). Either use the free SVM command line or get a copy of Veritas Foundation Basic Suite "free" (but crippled - limited to 4 volumes and 4 filesystems) - http://www.symantec.com/enterprise/sfbasic/index.jsp. At least with Veritas - the GUI will step you thru the entire process of disk management. I can't say that for SVM, with a bit of persistence and skill - you might not be disappointed. I prefer the command line because you can specify a myriad of parameters that the GUIs can't initutively tell you.

Solaris Install (Sparc) cannot find disk

When I do a 'boot cdrom' from the OK prompt, it goes through installation, but stops about 50% in saying 'no disk detected, check connection, etc..'
There is a disk, and the installed hard drive was formatted using a command string in linux by the vendor, but the Solaris install doesn't see it.
Any ideas?

108822-02 / 110930-01 are expected to fix this problem.
Since the problem is ACPI related, perhaps your bios has an option to
disable ACPI support?

Solaris won't find IDE disk (sparc)

I'm trying to reinstall solaris on a UltraII 440Mhz (ide) machine.
On the disk is now debian Linux, but because I'd like to get some experience with Solaris, i'll give that a shot. Debian boots fine btw.
After being able to select the installation medium (cd\DVD) there's a message "initializing system", but at about 50% of that one it just says : no hard disk detected, please power all disks (ore something like that).
The model is a 7200rpm seagate which has been originally in the machine afaik (it's a deprecateed machine from my employer).
What am I doing wrong?
I just booted the installer using:
stop-a
boot cdrom
and click next etc.

You could try and run Solaris "format" and see how it reacts on your disk. To do so you'ld have to boot up into single user from the cd using:
boot cdrom -s
Then, once you get the hash-prompt, just run "format".
Its possible that the installation media can't recognize the disk because it lacks a Solaris label. In that case you'll have to add a Solaris label to it (something you can do with format), however i'm unsure what effect that will have on your Linux instance.

Migrating solaris 10 to larger hard disk

Hi all,
I not sure if the word "migrating" should be used. Here is the case, we have a blade server which only have 2 local slot for hdd which is already occupied. The hdd is mirrored using hardware raid. Recently we encountered insufficient disk space and was thinking to increase the disk space. Somehow external storage is not an option here. The management bought two larger size hard disk and questioning if we can migrate/clone the running production OS to this new larger hard disk. The filesystem used is UFS and it is x86 machine. Please advise if it can be done using UFSdump. If yes, how about the partition size issue? Will it expanded? TQVM.

Checked with the hardware engineer and they confirm that the RAID can be synced one by one without breaking it. Means, we can take out hdd2 while hdd1 still in the server with RAID1. Then we put in hdd3 (new larger size hdd) and let it sync. After that repeat the steps with hdd1 > hdd4. I found the command growfs can expand the mountpoint. Can anyone share any foresee concerns and is it workable?

Well first if you are downloading the cd images to a non Solaris machine, they are ISO images that cd burning software and a cd burner will use to burn a bootable cd. After you create the cd's boot cd 1 of 2 and the install will begin. I read somewhere that if you download the images to a solaris machine you can mount the image as a CD and share it and then install directly from the image over a network. I am not too clear on exactly how that is done since I downloaded to W2K.

How to mount USB & CDROM drives from single user mode - Solaris boot disk?

I need to carry out ufsrestore on a single newly replaced system disk (no redundancy / mirroring) from either USB or CDROM drives from the following steps:
( i ) GRUB => e, e, cdrom –s, Enter, b (boot from Solaris 10 x86 media).
( ii ) Choose menu 1 for Install Solaris Interactive Mode to reach single user mode.Below are the commands that I have tried in single user mode without success:
mount –r –F pcfs /dev/dsk/c1t0d0p0 /cdrom (after unmount Solaris CD)
mount: /dev/dsk/c1t0d0p0 is not a DOS filesystem.
svcadm –v enable smserver
svcadm: Pattern ‘smserver’ doesn’t match any instances
svcadm enable autofs
svcadm: Pattern ‘autofs’ doesn’t match any instances
devfsadm
devfsadm: mkdir failed for /dev 0s1ed: Read-only file system
mkdir /mnt
mkdir: Failed to make directory “/mnt”; Read-only file systemPart of the problem is due to the current READ ONLY filesystems which does not allow the creation of mount point such as /mnt.
I have been able to create both / root (/dev/dsk/c1t0d0s0) and /export/home (/dev/dsk/c1t0d0s0) filesystems with newfs that are awaiting for restore using ufsrestore.
The only option I am left with is to attach a secondary disk to install Solaris 10 on either of them before bring the system to multi-user mode so that service such as volmgt, autofs, volfs are available to access USB & CDROM drives.
Any suggestion on how to resolve this issue?

Is the directory a located under the root filesystem. ie /a? Are there any other mount point for say USB drive as well? I am not in a position to try it out right now but will get back
to you soon on whether /a exist or not.

I would very much value your assistance on how to mount both CD & USB in this restrictive limited Read Only OS (assume that it is running from memory) in order to get complete access to
the blank primary disk so that full restore with ufsrestore could take place.
