Solaris 8 upgrade

I am running an older version of Solaris 8 and need to upgrade to solaris 8 02/04. I have downloaded the sw and was wondering if this upgrade can be done remotely from a telnet or xterm session or do I have to burn Cd's and upgrade the server hands on?

I'm a little confused about the statement about the zone. Because it is solaris 8, is the entire OS considered a 1 global zone?Solaris 8 has never had zone support nor will it ever have zone support. So from that perspective I guess you could call it a global zone if you wish but at the time Solaris 8 was active the concept of a global zone did not exist. For the purposes of your question, yes, it's only a global zone with no non global zones.
You're reading way to much into this.

  • Solaris upgrade with Veritas Volume Manager

I have to upgrade Solaris from 7 to 8 on a server which has Veritas Volume Manager. OK, I already found the necessary information to make this upgrade, but I have not found any answers on my problem.
It is quite possible that after VVM was installed, some of the filesystems like /, /opt, /usr or /var were increased or that additional filesystems were added on the rootdisk. This will prevent the upgrade_start to run correctly. One way to overcome this problem is to boot the machine in single-user mode, create all the root filesystems as standard ufs filesystems on a free disk with the same size as the VVM filesystems and then use ufsdump to copy all data over. When that is done, install a bootblock on the new disk and boot the machine from this disk. Then, start the Solaris upgrade. The problem with this is that when there is no free disk available, then I clearly have a problem.
Does anyone have experience with this or has a better plan ?
Should I completely de-install VVM or is it enough to convert all rootfilesystems to ufs filesystems ?
Please reply to me individually at [email protected]
    Thanks,
    Bruno

There are more things that you need to do.
Read veritas install guide -- it has a pretty good section of what needs to be done.

  • DB upgrade during a Solaris upgrade using live upgrade feature

    Hello,
Here is the scenario. We are currently upgrading our OS from Solaris 9 to Solaris 10. And there is also a major database upgrade involved too. To help mitigate downtime, the Solaris Live Upgrade feature is being used by the SA's. The DB to be upgraded is currently at 9i and the proposed upgrade end state is at 10.2.0.3.
Does anyone know if it is possible to do at least part of the database upgrade in the alternate boot environment created during the live upgrade process? So lets say that I am able to get the database partly upgraded to 10.2.0.1. Then, I want to run the patch set for 10.2.0.3 in the alternate boot environment and do the upgrade of the instance there too so that when the alternate boot environment is booted to the primary boot environment, I can, in effect, just start up the database.
That's sort of a high level simplified version of what I think may be possible.
Does anyone have any recommendations? We don't have any other high availability solutions currently in place so options such as using data guard do not apply.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi magNorth,
I'm not a Solaris expert but I'd always recommend not to do both steps (OS upgrade and database upgrade) at the same time. I've seen to many live scenarios where either the one or the other has caused issues - and it's fairly tough for all three parties (You as the customer, Sun Support, Oracle Support) to find out the end what was/is causing the issues.
    So my recommendation would be:
    1) Do your Solaris upgrade from 9 to 10 and check for the most recent Solaris patches - once this has been finished and run for one or two weeks successfully in production then go to step 2
    2) Do your database upgrade - I would suggest not going to 10.2.0.3 but directly to 10.2.0.4 because 10.2.0.4 has ~2000 bug fixes plus the security fixes from April2008 - but that's your decision. If 10.2.0.3 is a must then at least check Note:401435.1 for known issues and alert in 10.2.0.3 and for both cases the Upgrade Companion: Note:466181.1
    Kind regards

  • No Java Console after Solaris upgrade

    Hi,
after upgrading from Solaris 8 to Solaris 9, the Java Console stopped functioning. It starts and authenticates successfully, but as it reaches the stage "Starting Console...", it stucks there.
Admin server is running, I have checked it by running Console from another host (Solaris 8).
After doing some truss'es, I found that everybody is waiting for "java" (/iplanet/servers/directory52/bin/base/jre/bin/java) to exit, but it doesn't wants to.
I'm running Console bundled with DS 5.2 via ssh X forwarding. The same configuration worked before Solaris upgrade.
If you have some thoughts, share it with me.
    Thanks,

  • Solaris Upgrade 9u8 -- 10u9

    Hi all
I need to study the upgrade from Solaris 9u8 to 10u9 as well as the upgrade from Solaris Cluster 3.1u4 --> 3.3u1 and VxVM 4.1 --> 6.0.1
I plan to realize a standard upgrade but do I have to perform an intermediary step fo the cluster from 3.1 to 3.2 and then to 3.3 as described
Minimum Oracle Solaris Cluster software version - Oracle Solaris Cluster 3.3 software supports the following direct upgrade paths:
SPARC: From version 3.1 8/05 through version 3.2 11/09 - Use the standard, dual-partition, or live upgrade method.
From version 3.2 including update releases through version 3.2 11/09 - Use the standard, dual-partition, or live upgrade method.
On version 3.3 to an Oracle Solaris Cluster 3.3 update release with no Oracle Solaris upgrade except to an Oracle Solaris update release, or to upgrade only Oracle Solaris to an update release – You can also use the rolling upgrade method.
Or is it possible to upgrade from 3.1 to 3.3 directly.
Tx for your support in order to help me defining the right order of procedures
    Regards
    Support Solaris

No, thats not really the recommended way.
If you have two disks, have a look at live upgrade. That way you can upgrade one of your disks on the fly and later reboot to activate it.
Better yet, if you have ZFS you don't even have to do that. If you aren't using ZFS as your root-filesystem, you can break your mirror and upgrade one of the disks to ZFS using live upgrade as well.. Then you will never ever have to worry about breaking mirrors to do upgrades again..

  • Solaris upgrade from 2.8 to 10

    Hi
We are starting with the upgrade project soon, and it involves several phases. The first is to upgrade the operating system from Solaris 2.8 to Solaris 10. I have searched the support portal for an upgrade guide for this process and have found nothing.
My question is, is there an upgrade guide for the unix upgrade (as there are for eg. Oracle upgrades) and are there specific notes that I should be referring to for this upgrade ?
    Thanks in advance
    Mark

The Operating System upgrade Guide should be supplied by your OS vendor; Sun in this case. The Notes that are released are the ones found under Solaris 10.

  • Solaris Upgrade

Hi I have a Sun machine with the following detials
    SunOS MYBOX 5.6 Generic_105181-23 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-60 512 MB RAM
and want to upgrade to Solaris 9. I am very new to Solaris. Does anyone know any sites or docs that will help me.

Instalation CDs/DVD (11/06) offers upgrade. I did it, because my old preinstalled (on Sun Blade 1500) solaris 10 became unstable after last kernel patch (118833-36) and it was not possible to patchrm it. Disadvantage is that you must download full installation CDs/DVD and a bit long time to upgrade.

  • Local mods - upgrading to Solaris 8

    Hi
I will be upgrading from Solaris 2.6 to Solaris 8.
How much will I have to re-do in the way of the configuration of things like cron jobs, rtel printers, lpadmin printers, serial port (aurora) configuration and ?any other local modifications?
Will I have to reinstall the aurora serial port drivers?
Are the /etc/rcn.d directory contents and /etc/inittab preserved?
    Thanks
    D

"Most" user configurable files will "survive" an upgrade but it is up to you to find out if such things as aurora serial port drivers are supported, or will even work ,in Solaris 8 or if an upgrade is required. Your primary network interface may be the only interface to survive the upgrade. Cron jobs should be OK.
The only way to protect yourself is to have a level 0 ufsdump of all your OS slices to a local tape drive. Preferably this will be done from a cdrom boot. Don't really want to dump "live" files. You can then interactivly ufsrestore missing files.
If your upgrade turns sour, or your filesystems are too small for Solaris 8 then a ufsrestore may be your only recourse.
Please try to find InfoDoc 16141 - Solaris Upgrade Tips & Checklist.
Please ensure your system boots before any upgrade begins.

  • Upgrade Solaris 8 from 10/01 to 02/02

Hi all, I need to upgrade some systems from Solaris 8 10/01 to 02/02. I use VxVM 3.2 and VxFS 3.4. I don't need to upgrade Veritas Software. I want use Live Upgrade and in all example I find (2.6 ==> 8) I have to reinstall VxVM. In my situation, is Veritas products reinstallaton mandatory?? Can I use unencapsulation and encapsulation??

    Hi,
You have to get volume manager out of the way before you upgrade solaris. You can un-encapsulate the root disk, upgrade then re-encapsulate if you want.
The way I do is as follows:
boot up normally from the vxroot disk.
    touch /etc/vx/reconfig.d/state.d/install-db
#This will stop volume manager from starting up in a normal mode. Basically stops all the volume management stuff from interferring
remove the root entries in /etc/system for veritas (e.g. rootdev:/psuedo/vxio@0:0 and set vxio:vol_rootdev_is_volume=1)
#this line tells solaris that the root volume is a veritas device. Without this removed Solaris will try to mount up the root disk as a veritas volume and fail.
    cp /etc/vfstab /etc/vfstab.old
    cp /etc/vfstab.prevm /etc/vfstab
#replaces the /etc/vfstab file with the pre-volume-manager one
    reboot the system.
It will now reboot without volume manager. Boot it all up to make sure there are no problems / errors, the do an init 0, then a boot cdrom - install or whatever to install solaris. upgrade solaris.
Machine will then reboot after Solaris has been upgraded. Re-install volume manager (might not be required if you're on the same solaris version) and re-encapsulate the root disk. Initalise the root-mirror, and mirror the root disk to the mirror (after the 2 reboots that volume manager needs)
Much easier to do the upgrade this way ;)
There are some infodocs on this procedure on the support.veritas.com knowledge base as well, if you want the `preferred veritas endorsed` method..

  • Upgrade from Solaris 8 to 10....?  Why?

I'm currently running 9.2.0.7 RAC on Solaris 8.
    I'm upgrading to Oracle 10gR2.
I'd like to do upgrade to Solaris 10 as well (Solaris 10 first then after 2 weeks Oracle 10gR2).
Some are saying why bother with the Solaris upgrade - 8 works...
I know that Sol10 offers better security, performance etc are there any other good reasons to go to 10?

    hi,
    hope this helps..

  • Precautions to Be Taken  With Oracle 10G During Solaris 10g Upgrade

    Hi
We are upgrading our servers from Solaris 9 to Solaris10. Could anybody please help me in understanding the

    Pavan,
you'd better post your question in a different forum -> Database -> Installation
    Database Installation
as this forum deals with migrations of foreign databases to Oracle.

  • Solaris 2.6 to Solaris 8

    Hi,
we have deliver a Motif 1.2 application to a customer a few years ago. This application is currently running under Solaris 2.6 on IBM PC computer (Pentium II), is built using X11R6 and is using MWM.
Now this customer is replacing the old computers by new SUN Blade 150 and would like us to port our application to run on these new machines with Solaris 8.
I'm trying to figure out the details of this port. Anyone has been through something similar? Is it as simple as recompiling the application under Solaris 8? Where can I find more information about this?
    Thanks in advance...
    Luc Leblanc

To make sure the upgrade does not touch the mountpoints you mention, I would recommend that you comment them out of the /etc/vfstab file before the upgrade.
RE: the HP software. You will need to check with HP to see if that version of that software is compatible with Solaris 8. The Solaris upgrade should not modify this software, but that does not guarantee it will work under Solaris 8.
Solaris 8 does not have seperate upgrade and full versions. Any Solaris 8 media kit can be used to do an initial or upgrade installation.
If you have sunsolve access, I recommend looking for infodoc 16141, which has a list of general suggestions to help insure the Solaris OS is upgradable.
Something else to look at is the LiveUpgrade program. This allows you to make a copy of your current OS, upgrade the copy, and verify that its functionality meets your needs. If the upgrade is does not function as you hope, you can easily go back to the previous version of Solaris. More info can be found at http://docs.sun.com/?p=/doc/806-7933
