Solaris 8 with Windows 98

I am planning on installing the Solaris 8 media kit on my Windows 98, Pentium III computer. I would like to have both operating systems on the same hard drive. I am new to computers and am doing this for educational purposes - I would like to become a systems administrator. Please give any advice of what I need to do. If I have to partition my hard drive, how do I do this? What is the quickest way of backing up my hard drive?
Is there any problems of having 2 OS on the same hard drive? If so, what is the best and cheapest way to do this?

Hi,
When you run the 2.6 install program, it will ask you which partition you wish to use. On disk1, all you need to do is to create another partition on your existing disk. You can use Solaris boot manager to boot Solaris x86, NT, and Win 9x (among other systems).
To shrink an existing MS-DOS/MS Windows partition, if you need to make room, use something like Partition Magic.
Problems have been reported inter-working with OS/2, however. Reportedly, the order in which you install things is very important. Solaris doesn't "share" computers and partitions really well. If you have problems, you may need to install Solaris first, on a partition towards the end, reinstall the boot manager and add the partition. ======================================================================
On Solaris 2.x, use fdisk to find your disk partition table. For example, on an ATAPI drive, # fdisk /dev/rdsk/c0d0p0 would show something like the following:
Total disk size is 524 cylinders Cylinder size is 16065 (512 byte) blocks Cylinders Partition Status Type Start End Length % ========= ====== ============ ===== === ====== === 1 Solaris 0 260 261 50 2 Active Solaris 261 522 262 50
Where "Partition 1" was used for Windows 95. It was deleted and recreated with "Solaris" type. Make a ufs filesystem on the partition. (You can not subdivide this fdisk partition into Solaris slices). For example, # mkfs -F ufs /dev/rdsk/c0d0p1 4192965 where number 4192965 = 261 * 16065 is the total number of blocks on this partition, calculated as the cylinder length on this partition (261 from the above partition table) times the cylinder size (16065 blocks as shown in the header of the partition table.)
Mount the filesystem as usual. For example: # mount /dev/dsk/c0d0p1 /export/home ====================================================================== If you have another Operating System installed, boot into the other operating system (usually Windows or Linux). Select the current (non-Solaris) partition as the "Active" partition. Reboot. If the computer boots into the other operating system without the Solaris boot menu, you can safely delete the Solaris partition.
If you have no other Operating System installed, simply install another operating system over Solaris on the hard drive. Select "Entire disk" or similar during the installation. ======================================================================
if you any further comments or questions, kindly revert backup or send mail.

  • Dual OS system booting issue - Solaris with Windows XP Pro

    Hi,
    I have installed Windows XP Professional with SP2 on my laptop Dell Inspiron 6400 (Intel Core 2 Duo). I created partition as below,
    C: 25GB (Primary : Active) Installed XP
    D: 15GB (Primary) - Tried to install Solaris here
    F: 10GB (Primary)
    G: 20 GB (Logical)
    H: 20 GB (Logical)
    1. I tried to install Solaris 10, booted up system from DVD and selected Solaris. I got a message related to "License..." and it stopped right there, nothing showed up on screen after the message. I forced it to shutdown.
    2. Next, I tried with Solaris Express Developer edition DVD. I was able to proceed until "Install" option. After clicking "Install" button, it reported some account name(no account name found) setting problem and quitted from installation. It asked to remove the DVD manually. But I was not able to eject it, got stuck. I switched off it and removed DVD.
    When I bootup the system next time from HDD or CD or USB bootable backup, it showed blank screen and blinking cursor. I am not able to boot system with Win XP or USB Win Xp bootable. I am able to enter BIOS setup.
    Please let me know how to boot up Win Xp and install Solaris with it.

    with my little experience i find solaris 10 isn't able to install on sata hdd but with solaris express edition 5.11 i was able to install it on my lap top toshiba tecra and now i can boot with xp sp2 and solaris i hope this answer your question .

  • Install Solaris 8 on Gateway Laptop with Windows XP

    I have Gateway laptop with Windows XP pre-installed. Now I want to install Solaris 8 without removing the Windows XP. I wanted to use dual boot option. Can any body advice me if there is any whit paper on this subject(with step by step insturctions). I have partition magic but it can only partition and format to NTFS, FAT, FAT32 and Ext2 (linux only).
    Thanks for your help.

    It can be done but the biggest stump is the network interface. I've an Acer 350 series with a built-in NIC. I also use XFree86 because the Xsun doesn't recognize the video card. The biggest problem in getting Solaris x86 working is getting the network interface to work, since the PCMCIA support is horrible. You need to be sure the the components on your laptop conform to the HCL. As for X, just use XFree86.

  • Solaris 10 x86 coexist with Windows XP

    Hi,
    I can install Solaris 10 on my laptop (Toshiba Dynabook SSX) through jumpstart installation. After that, I boot up my laptop in Windows 98 boot disk to create and format a FAT32 partition. This partition used to install Windows XP in unattended mode. When I finish Windows XP installation. I reboot my laptop in Solaris 10. Durning the boot sequence, the system reports a lot of "BAD BLOCK" harddisk errors. I tried to fix this by "fsck -y". Since the partition is badly damage. there is no way to recover it. I guess it should be a bug for this beta release. I hope that someone in Sun can figure out this problem.

    Sounds more like a Windows 98 or Windows XP problem, that thrashes other OS's fdisk partitions.
    I'm not sure, but does Windows 98 properly support big (>32GB) IDE disks in LBA mode? I'd double check
    the fdisk tables from Solaris with "fdisk -W - /dev/rdsk/....p0" after you've created and formatted the FAT32
    partition from Windows 98, maybe the FAT32 partition overlaps the Solaris fdisk partition?

  • Networking Solaris OS With Windows

    Hi guys, I am currently developing a java web application using the Solaris 10 OS. It is a Chat application so in other words, people using windows OS must be able to use my Chat application.
    My question is how do i network Solaris 10 with Windows so that people using windows OS can use my application which is developed on the Solaris.

    Part of the issue may be how often you log onto Virtual XP.  Since both W7 and XP are separate and independent operating environments, the both need to be updated with all Microsoft and other software updates.  The also operate with separate security applications (e.g., anti-virus).  Depending on your automatic system update settings, when you log into XP, you may automatically install and run the latest version of Microsoft Security Essentials, or AVG Antivirus, or some other such applications.  Or, you may be overdue for a scheduled system scan, so the scan is launched as soon as you start Virtual XP.  Systems such as these consume extremely large amounts of CPU time when they launch and do a system scan.  However, when they finish, CPU utilization drops to normal.
    If you don't constantly go back and forth between W7 and XP every day, you should expect that you will probably find very large CPU utilization from such scans if you have not logged into XP for some time.  In my experience, it will all go away.
    Also, remember that you should separately defrag both environments.  The W7 defrag may take hours, as Virtual XP actually exists as three very large files on your basic HDD, and defragging W7 does nothing to defrag all of the tens of thousands of individual Virtual XP files that are embedded in the huge system files (such as .vhd) which hold the XP environment.
    You might also want to check out the Auslogics Disk Defrag package.  It is freeware, and in my experience does a better job than Microsoft's systems.  Again, you would need to install separate copies of this package in each of the W7 and XP environments.

  • Bad PBR sig and dual booting with Windows

    This site's menu config is too difficult for me...
    fyi.
    =>
    Below is the cases that happened in my environment
    when installing Solaris 8 Operating Environment, Intel Platform Edition
    Some will help you, and some may be just for your thinking.
    Bad PBR sig
    You know what it means?
    I don't know.
    If you know, let me know please...
    @ Case 1
    My Seagate ST39236LW 9.2GB HARD DISK fdisk info
    Total disk size is 14342 cylinders
    Cylinder size is 1251 (512 byte) blocks
    Partition Status Type Start End Length %
    ========= ====== ============ ===== === ====== ===
    1 IFS:NTFS 0 7165 7166 50
    2 Active x86 boot 7166 7182 17 0
    3 Solaris 7183 14341 7159 50
    (I use cylinder number to partition hard disk. Why?
    When I use % and insert 1% to partition 2 then
    fdisk makes start cylinder 7155.
    It overlays with partition 1's end cylinder number.
    So fdisk save(menu no 4) fails...
    because the partition 1's start cylinder number is 0 ?)
    After rebooting, bizarre Bad PBR sig, and my system dies...
    So I boots my PC with Windows(or Dos) booting diskette.
    A> fdisk
    First Hard Disk partition info
    1 NTFS 4377 50%
    2 NON-DOS 10 0%
    3 A NON-DOS 10 0% <= Solaris created x86 boot
    4 NON-DOS 4363 0%
    Solaris created extra X86 boot partition 3 and made it active.
    But partition 3 could not boot...
    I made partition 2 active from dos fdisk menu,
    and pc boots well.
    After rebooting, my disk partition info is like this
    Total disk size is 14342 cylinders
    Cylinder size is 1251 (512 byte) blocks
    Partition Status Type Start End Length %
    ========= ====== ============ ===== === ====== ===
    1 IFS:NTFS 0 7165 7166 50
    2 Active x86 boot 7166 7182 17 0
    3 x86 boot 7183 7199 17 0
    4 Solaris 7200 14341 7142 50
    Then after installation?
    Partition Status Type Start End Length %
    ========= ====== ============ ===== === ====== ===
    1 IFS:NTFS 0 7165 7166 50
    2 Active x86 boot 7165 7181 17 0
    3 Solaris 7200 14341 7142 50
    Partition 2 and 3 changed...
    Where did partition 3 go???
    Just deleted?
    Then why partition 2 Start cylinder changed?
    @ Case 2.
    Another queer thing....
    Total disk size is 14342 cylinders
    Cylinder size is 1251 (512 byte) blocks
    Partition Status Type Start End Length %
    ========= ====== ============ ===== === ====== ===
    1 IFS:NTFS 0 7165 7166 50
    2 Active Solaris 7166 14341 7176 50
    In Solaris x86 format fdisk menu,
    if I've allocated remaining disk space all to Solaris(without x86 boot),
    then Solaris also makes x86 boot partition(size 10MB), reboots well.
    But install fails due to not enough free disk space
    when install begins slicing Solaris partition.
    error log says
    Installing 32 Bit Solaris Packages
    - Configuring boot device
    - Using disk(c0t0d0) for "rootdisk"
    - Deleting x86 boot fdisk partition (c0t0d0)
    - Creating x86 boot fdisk partition (c0t0d0)
    ERROR:Not enough free space to create x86 Boot fdisk partition(c0t0d0)
    Why does Solaris delete and create x86 boot partition?
    Why did it exist?
    Case 3.
    If I've fdisked like this, what will happen???
    Total disk size is 14342 cylinders
    Cylinder size is 1251 (512 byte) blocks
    Partition Status Type Start End Length %

    BAD PBR SIG message comes from your BIOS - no partition boot record.
    Sorry but it's not clear what else is going on - might be worth running a ODS based fdisk to clear the disk before installing Solaris?

    How to solve this problem?
    I want to migrate whole database, it'can be?

    Hi
    I was able to find only two types of error in this.
    1)
    IMP-00015: following statement failed because the object already exists:Use ignore=y along with import because the tablespace for which it failed already exist in the database. So with ignore=y it would ignore the objects which already exist and would go to next step.
    2)
    IMP-00003: ORACLE error 1119 encounteredThis is because full export do include tablespace defination also. Since the tablespaces which it is trying to create does not exist in the system and the source database from where the exp dump was taken was Unix flavour so the file structure between them was different and as a result it was not able to create it.
    Suggestion.: Manually create the tablespace at your desired location. And then run the imp again with ignore=y

  • Migration from sun/solaris to windows

    While performing a migration of SAP from solaris to windows OS what are the implications, issues and things to keep in mind. Also which database would give the best performance (Oracle or MS SQL) and what are the specific requirements if latest release of MS SQL is to be used the database.

    > That is fine but I rather need to know that if the database is changed from Oracle10.2  to MS SQL 2000 then what can be the implications and what will be the additional hardware requirements, if the current SAP configuration is 4.6D and it is migrated to 32 bit windows server 2003.
    Why do you plan to use the almost 10 year old SQL Server 2000? It's like going back to Oracle 7.x times! SQL Server 2005 would be the way to go.
    > Whether shifting to MS SQL server 2000 would give an added advantage?
    Advantage for whom?
    - Oracle is expensive, the licenses and the annual maintenance is higher compared to SQL Server
    - Oracle is complex, SQL Server is much easier to maintain
    - Windows adds an additional risk (Virus, Malware) which is has to be dealt with separately (Firewalls, Virusscanners etc.) which in turn is additional work and hence costs additional money
    - Windows is not always a deterministic operating system ("it works again after reboot, nobody knows why")
    > My job is to give the pros cons of both configurations.
    I would do some research what both combinations are able to do, if you need certain Oracle features that are not available on SQL Server, if you developers and administrators are more convenient with Oracle, if you have specific requirements about performance that can't be fullfilled with SQL server etc.
    All that are things you have to evaluate and check. Since we don't know how you use the system and what you do with it we can't tell you what's "best" for your environment.

  • DefaultTableCellRender not working on solaris with JDK1.3.1

    HI,
    I have upgraded my JRE from 1.2.2 to 1.3.1. I was using
    the following piece of code
    column = new TableColumn(1,200);
    column.setCellRenderer(new DefaultTableCellRenderer());
    this was working fine with Jre 1.2.2 where i just was painting the cell with blue/green colors based on some conditions. but once i migrated from jre 1.2.2 to jre1.3.1 without changing the code, i found that it is working the same way with windows environment but it's not able to paint the cells properly with solaris 5.8 environment. to paint the cells I am using Color class. I was using
    color1 = new Color(144,202,182); //light green
    Color2 = new Color(145,168,199) //light blue
    however on solaris both of them are being displayed as light blue colour.
    I want to know what could be the reason for such behaviour? Are ther any patches available for the solaris with jre1.3.1 so that this problem can be fixed.

    Try this:

  • Dual boot Solaris 10 / Windows 2003

    Hi,
    I have a computer with Windows 2003 installed and free disk space for more partitions.
    My question is that if Solaris after being installed will recognise Windows and create entry for it in the boot system.
    Any help would be apreciated.
    Warm Regards,
    Mrio Gamito

    It will create default menu entry to boot call "grub". Best practis is install with unpatition space but be sure you are not applying dynamic disk on the disk otherwise it can't support dual boot.

  • How to run import from Unix Oracle 8.0.5 database with Windows Oracle client?

    How to run import from Unix Oracle 8.0.5 database via network with Windows Oracle client? Is it possible? When I try to do it Oracle client just hangs... If not which ones are compatible Aix or Solaris to Unix or it must be a Unix client to connect to Unix Oracle database. Thank's for any help.

    Hi,
    In our project we are using this type. Since in this project server in UNIX(DEC) and client is running on windows. We have created a listener which always listen requests from client and doing the according to the request.
    Step1. create a request table, where u are inserting ur request.
    step2. create PRO*C proram, which is listening request on the table. If there is any request, call the imp (executable). This is happening on server side.
    Benifit. U can make a request from cleint and ftp the file client sit.
    Are u interested in more details and code, pls send a mail to me

  • Can I use Solaris with my Home Recording Studio?

    Hello,
    I am currently building a basic home recording studio. I recently assembled a new computer and will be purchasing music recording equipment very soon. Before I purchase the audio recording gear, I was curious about a few things pertaining to the use of Solaris as my possible choice system.
    The data that I store on my hard drives will need to be secure. I had originally considered RAID 5 though recently found out about RAID Z, which appears to be far ahead of the other RAIDs. I am curious to know more about how to set up a RAID Z system.
    The computer will be running Solaris, various Linux or BSD, and Windows Vista. I have 500GB x4 hard drives. I am considering separating one and using it strictly for Vista, and using the remaining 3 with a RAID set-up for nix. If I had a choice, I would put much less hard drive space into Vista (capping it at 150 to 200 GB), though I have yet to come across a RAID system that effectively or efficiently cooperates cross-platform. With that in mind, the majority of the remaining 1.5TB can go into my studio OS - hopefully Solaris - while left-over hard drive space is set aside for various other *nix.
    I've used Solaris 10 before, though haven't really gone into detail on the mechanics of such features as ZFS, zones, now RAID Z, and the many more amazing features that Solaris provides. Likewise, I am not really familiar with how well the system might operate with software/applications that I could use for recording and composing music.
    Beyond the available 2TB (or 1.5TB RAID-ready) space, my computer is running on a new 64-bit quad-core AMD CPU (~2.6GHz) and currently has 4GB 1066MHz RAM. In my search for preparing a computer that suits me for high performance recording - including the editing and mastering of audio - I am attempting to narrow down my options on the software side of things. I have been very satisfied with the general file management of Solaris, though am unsure of how well it might run as the software side of a home recording studio. An additional factor in deciding will be the software's compatbility with audio PCI cards and external recording/audio interfaces. There is always a question of whether or not the necessary drivers, firmware, or similar is available between any given hardware and software components.
    Some other *nix options I have considered - "Ubuntu Studio 64-bit" (though it appears to prefer 32-bit) and "64 Studio" (also Debian-based, though appears to be optimized for 64-bit). Some colleagues have used Gentoo with studio applications, though I don't know of any Linux distributions that offer the versatility, power, stability, and efficiency of Solaris for the operating system that it is.
    If I use something like "64 Studio", I will have the advantage of a system that is ready-built for studio recording purposes as well as a system that I know is compatible with the sound gear that I am considering purchasing. However, those systems are restricted by their file system types, RAID availability and dependability, and the general disadvantages of using the Linux kernel in general. (I enjoy Linux, though I admittedly prefer Unix over it.)
    Can I use Solaris with my home recording studio?
    Thank you!

    Caught another typo.

    I'm not sure what your question is. If you have particular software you want to run, you should see what you can get that package to run under. Sound hw stuff don't tend to be too portable unless it's written on top of OSS (htttp://www.opensound.com). Were I you, I'd consider separating out the storage part and the processing part. Get something like a cheap dell sc440 to be a file server and give the drives to that (unless you actually can get all the components working under solaris).

  • IPMP / ARP Cache oddity - Solaris to Windows comm errors

    First - a qualification - I'm not an Solaris admin, so feel free to call me out for any blatant errors..
    I've got several Solaris 10 servers that are having intermittent network communication issues with Windows 2003 servers on the same subnet. All Solaris boxes are using two NICs and IPMP for their connections to the "primary" network. For example, one server (hostname bugbear) has two adapters ce0 and ce9:
    # ifconfig -a
    ce0: flags=1000843<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,MULTICAST,IPv4> mtu 1500 index 2
            inet 16.106.64.227 netmask fffff800 broadcast 16.106.71.255
            groupname shared0
    ce9: flags=1000843<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,MULTICAST,IPv4> mtu 1500 index 4
            inet 0.0.0.0 netmask ff000000 broadcast 0.255.255.255
            groupname shared0
    # cat /etc/hostname.ce0
    bugbear netmask + broadcast + group shared0 up
    # cat /etc/hostname.ce9
    group shared0 upIf I look at the arp cache, (almost) every other server it talks to shows up twice - an entry for each of the NIC devices:
    # arp -a
    Net to Media Table: IPv4
    Device   IP Address               Mask      Flags      Phys Addr
    ce9    win2k3box.city.acme.com 255.255.255.255 o        00:50:56:ae:13:58
    ce0    win2k3box.city.acme.com 255.255.255.255 o        00:50:56:ae:13:58I guess that's as expected - again, I'm not a Solaris expert.
    Finally, here's the issue I've found. For any other UNIX/Solaris hosts listed in the arp cache, my server can ping/FTP/whatever to the other - no problem. Sometimes the ce0 interface is listed first in the output for the target server, sometimes the ce9 interface is listed first. Doesn't matter - my server can talk to the other just fine.
    HOWEVER - for Windows servers, the order of entry in the arp cache seems to have relevance. If the ce9 interface is listed first, I can't ping, can't FTP, can't connect to the other server. If the ce0 interface is listed first, then everything works fine.
    Eventually the arp cache entries age out and get deleted. Usually then my server can talk to the Windows server again. I also found that if I delete both arp cache entries for the target Windows server, my server can talk to it again (arp cache gets rebuilt with the ce0 interface). If left alone, the behavior seems to be that my server can talk to a Windows target for an hour or two, then it can't for another hour or two, then the cycle repeats.
    NOTE - The mac address in the arp cache is not getting poisoned, as with the Broadcom windows driver issue that hit some folks (myself included). All the mac addresses for the servers in the arp cache are consistent as best I can tell, so that's not the problem.
    Any input/suggestions greatly appreciated.

    Here are the codes:
    In the initializing stage,
         try {
              this.serialPort = (SerialPort) portId.open("SimpleReadApp", 2000);
         } catch (PortInUseException e) {
             e.printStackTrace();
         this.serialPort.notifyOnDataAvailable(false);
         try {
            this.serialPort.setSerialPortParams(9600, SerialPort.DATABITS_8, SerialPort.STOPBITS_1, SerialPort.PARITY_NONE);
            this.serialPort.setFlowControlMode(SerialPort.FLOWCONTROL_NONE);
            this.serialPort.enableReceiveTimeout(10);
    //this.serialPort.disableReceiveTimeout();
    //this.serialPort.enableReceiveThreshold(0);
            this.serialPort.enableReceiveThreshold(1*1024*1024);
            if (this.serialPort.getInputStream() != null)
                    this.inputStream = this.serialPort.getInputStream();
            else
                    System.out.print("can not get inpustream!\n");
          } catch (Exception e) {
                  e.printStackTrace();
          }Then in the reading stage, we have:
        byte[] readBuffer = new byte[1 * 1024 * 10];
        while (true) {
              try {
                   int numBytes = inputStream.read(readBuffer);
                   System.out.print("There are " + numBytes + " bytes having been read.");
              } catch (Exception e) {
                  e.printStackTrace();
              }The above codes do not have any problem using COMM API 2.0 on Windows. Or COMM API 3.0 on Solaris. But, on RedHat, it can run out of memory very quickly.

  • Command Line Disk Share with Windows

    I am running Solaris 10 (SunOS 5.10) without the GUI interface. I cannot, therefore, run the Solaris Management Console.
    How do I share my disk with Windows systems on the same network using the command line?

    you can use samba for sharing its comes with solaris 10 , or use solaris 10 as nfs server and use PCNFS on windows end to mount the disk
    in solaris most of things dont require GUI , thats its beauty :)
