Solaris 8 (x86) 2/02 support IDE drivr than 20GB?

Would like to find out from those who had tried installing Solaris 8 (x86) 2/02 on an IDE drive with capacity larger than 20 GB, say 40 GB or more?? Thanks your advice!

This is not quite related but a bit of a wierd one. I attempted several times to install Solaris 8 2/02 on a standard 13 Gb hard disk but had absolutely no luck at all. Even the friendly engineer at Sun couldn't figure it out. After tinkering about we found that for some reason when attempting to copy mini root to the drive it has problems reading the Drive geometry, I switched to a high performance 40 Gb hard disk and yo ho no problem at all.My answer to you is that hard drives are really cheap at the moment, you can pick up a decent 40 Gb for under 40 UK. Your hard disk might have strange geometry.. ! I know it's not much help but it might solve your problem.

  • Linux support on Solaris 10 x86

When we are trying to run linux binaries on solaris 10 getting the following error:
    update_records: Cannot find /lib/ld-linux.so.2
    update_records: this is linux binary.
Whereas Solaris 10 features states that we can run the linux binaries on solaris 10 natively. Let me know in which release of solaris 10 do we have support for linux libraries

That feature doesn't exist yet. It's suppose to come in a future update of Solaris 10. Your only option if you want to run Linux binaries natively is to use "lxrun"--otherwise get the source, if possible, and recompile.

  • Solaris 10 x86/JDS-3 Application Support

I have successfully installed and am running Solaris 10 x86/JDS-3 on an HP OmniBook 6100.
I did have some problems with sound that were solved by downloading drivers from http://www.opensound.com
I also was able to load plug-ins for Macromedia Flash.
I am confused about which other plug-ins to use if there are none written specifically for Solaris x86. Should I choose a linux driver?
Also, I would like to play DVD movies on my laptop. There doesn't seem to be a built-in application to do it. What do you recommend?
    All the best,
    Frank

This is likely to be totally unrelated to your problem but I can't help wonder. And perhaps you may pick up something usefull to debug your problems...
I have seen this behaviour a few times on KDE. After carefully checking it turned out that some of its datafiles (in ~/.kde) were setup with the wrong permission bits thus making it impossible for me to read/write it (and automaticly overwrite). Now I can't help wonder if this isn't happening to you too, in some issues KDE and Gnome act quite alike.
A possible option to debug this would be to try and start the Java Desktop from the console. To this end you'd need to put the commands needed to start JDS in your ~/.xinitrc file after which you should be able to use 'startx' to see if it'll run. Make sure you use > and 2> to capture the logs it produces since that will likely help you to find the cause of your problems.

  • Compiling ant 1.6.2 for Solaris 10 x86

    Hi,
I need to compile Ant 1.6.2 on Solaris 10 x86 edition (S10 x86 comes with ant 1.5.4 but some of the newer ant syntaxes are not supported in 1.5.4). When I tried doing the compile using Ant 1.6.2 sources from ant.apache.org, I get the following error:

I had the same problem on Solaris 10 sparc. The problem seems to relate to symbolic links with
long names not being extracted correctly from the tar file (resulting in @LongLink files popping
up around the place). If you use the .zip source file then the build goes fine.

  • Solaris 8 x86: Webstart launcher causes reboot

    Hello,
    My x86 PC has:
    - Elitegroup K7S5A mainboard
    - AMD Athlon K7 XP 2400+ Socket A thoroughbred CPU
    - AmiBIOS
    - 256 MB SDRAM
    - 2 Hard Disks with 40 GB each
There was a resource conflict caused by SiS chipset. However, with a DCA floppy where the ata.bef file was patched, I was able to install the Solaris 8 x86 system successfully.
During installation process, on the question whether there is a network connected to the computer, I checked "No". This is because my network card is not detected by the system and I will investigate on that later.
Now, when I boot the system, the graphical system is coming up, but shortly after that the graphical system is terminated with the following message:
The Webstart launcher has terminated unexpectedly.
The Webstart launcher will restart following a system reboot.
Is there any idea about this error?
    Thank you in advance!
    Thomas

Did you configure the video card to use the "VGA" black&white driver?
B&W video isn't supported with the Webstart installer. You need either a 8-bit pseudo-color or 24-bit
true-color video mode. The workaround is to install in text mode, bypassing the configuration of the video
card when you install from the "1 of 2" CD.
    Or try the following workaround:

  • No /dev/lp? on COMPAQ Proliant ML370 with Solaris 8 x86 10/00

    Dear Sir,
I have a problem about the /dev/lp? port in Solaris 8 x86 with COMPAQ Proliant ML370. I have seen in the boot interpreter it has detected a parallel port
device isa/lp@1...., but after I boot -r to start Solaris 8
OS it don't make any /dev/lp? or /devices/isa/lp*... and if
I mknod /dev/lp? myself it cannot print out ( I use cat /etc/hosts >> /dev/lp1, /dev/lp1 major=83 minor=1 ) It say "cannot create". I wonder why this happens, If I install this Solaris 8 x86 on other PC model. It has /dev/lp1 and can print out successfully. I try many ways such as: upgrade latest ROMPAQ BIOS firmware,
install lp driver patch set, install acpi patch. But still don't work. I found that serial ports (asy) which are ACPI is working because I can redirect console to serial port (asy).
Do anyone have the idea to solve or track down this problems. Thanks a lot...

Check out the HP Compaq web site and you shuld be able to find the Solaris drivers that are needed. http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/19340.html

    Hello Jakob,
this is the wrong forum because it's about Sun Hardware and only user-to-user.
    I would suggest that
you use your service-plan and contact Sun
    or
join the Solarisx86 group on Yahoo, browse the previous posts and then re-post on this maillist.

Btw. even the RAID functionality of the integrated RAID controller of Sun x64 systems isn't supported under Solaris 10 (only RHEL) ...

  • Fresh install of solaris 10 x86 hangs after 'Configuring devices'

    Hi All,
I just received a new SuperMicro server with an LSI MegaRAID SAS 9261-8i controller. While trying to install Solaris 10 it hangs after "Configuring devices". I checked the LSI page and Solaris 10 is supported according to them. Any ideas how to proceed?
Fairly new to Solaris on x86 hardware.
The system has a Xeon X5690 processor in an Intel Workstation Board S5520SC motherboard. The motherboard documents claim that not disabling usb 2.0 can hang an install. I have disabled the usb 2.0 in the bios but the system still hangs. Booting it with the -kd and -kv options don't give much information.
Any help is appreciated. I might be returning these machines if I can't get this worked out.
    Cheers,
    Steve

See if you can add the verbose option "-v" to the kernel boot options. I think you can get to the GRUB menu off the Solaris 10 install disk. That should tell you what device is causing the hang, or at least the last device that worked.
Also, can you try Solaris 11 and see if it gets past that point? A few years ago I has a similar issue with Solaris 10 on a Dell server. Solaris 11/OpenSolaris worked fine, though. IIRC I could work around the issue if I disabled the 2nd CPU - Solaris 10 had a problem bringing up the 2nd CPU on that Dell's CPU/MB config.

  • Solaris 10 x86 failed to reboot after initial installation due to display error

    Hi everyone,
i just finished installing solaris 10 x86 on my computer, and the installation process went smoothly. However, when the system tried to reboot, i got some error related to the display of the monitor, which caused no desktop login can be displayed and no access to the console. I had no way to proceed with the any other operations. The error read as:
    " Out of range<br />
    Hf 30KHz - 70KHz<br />
    Vf 30Hz - 160 Hz<br />
    Current frequency<br />
    Hf 90.3KHz "
I tried to boot to solaris failsafe mode and run "kdmconfig"
command to reconfigure video and monitor, but it did not work, since kdmconfig is not supported under that mode.
Because i have no way to login, the currently available solution seems not working with my situation. Dose anyone have idea or suggestion to figure it out, without reinstalling the OS from the very beginning?
Very appreciate your time and help.

    Solution found:
First tried to login using "console login" when solaris booted up, before the desktop login window appeared. Then, run command "kdmconfig", changed the video device to X86 VESA compatible device, which is from the x86 driver and porting kit for solaris, then test/save and exit. After that, reboot the system. Now it is working, not perfect though (due to my old monitor) :)-

  • Solaris 10 x86

    Hi there,
Just need a few information here...
Can Solaris 10 x86 support the following:
    1) SATA
    2) SAS
because all the server now c/w above new standards, instead of the long supported SCSI or IDE
    Thanks for any feedback...

Not too sure about SAS, but so far all the AMD Opterons X2200s I've been working with are all with SATA HDDs and I've installed all Solaris 10 1/06, 6/06 and 11/06 on the machines.
Hope that clears 50% of your doubt.

  • VmWare, Solaris 10, x86, Patch 120536-05, video drivers

    Hello,
I have Solaris 10 x86 working under VmWare 5.x with JDS. I use the Xorg VmWare video driver with a resolution of 1280x1024.
Everything works fine as long I don't apply the patch 120536-05 (updated video drivers and fixes).
I mean the only reason I have for applying this patch is due to the "SUN Update Manager". It's the only one left. All the other patches are installed. I can work without the patch, it's only nice to have.
As soon it is installed I get no longer a console outside of the windowmanager login screen.
On the login screen I say "Command line". Then I have a blank Screen for about 1 minute. It flashes around 5 times in this minute and then I get back to the login screen.
I think it's a bug in the patch. Any idea?
    Cheers El_Sol

save a copy of the /etc/openwin/server/etc/OWconfig and or the /etc/X11/tX86config file it your have one, of running Xorg vs SUN X, then try running the kdmconfig -u and then the kdmconfig -v to reconfigure it.
Open a sunsolve support ticket the contract support for your issue if it is reproducable and you can profice any errors on for Solaris 10 x86 is resonable if you already do not have one even if your on a whitebox clone, it's worrth looking into!
http://www.sun.com/service/solaris10/index.jsp there is a feature that includes Interoperability Support for the $360

  • Solaris 10 x86 on IBM x346

    Hi All,
I've currently got Solaris 10 x86 installed successfully on an IBM x346 which is a 1 proc 3.06GHz HT Xeon supporting EM64T and 1GB ram.
Everything works, except the most important device, network.
It's got two bge's onboard, I had to add the line :
    bge "pci14e4,1659"
    to /etc/driver_aliases and rebooted.
Okay so now I have /dev/bge0 and /dev/bge1, but neither of them will function.
If I ifconfig plumb bge0 or bge1, that works but the ether address is all 0's.
    If I set it thus:
    ifconfig bge0 192.168.70.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 ether 0:11:25:8c:3b:a2 up
That takes (i get the ether address from the bios), however the output looks like this:
    bge0: flags=1000843<UP,BROADCAST,MULTICAST,IPv4> mtu 1500 index 2
    inet 192.168.70.1 netmask ffffff00 broadcast 192.168.70.255
    ether 0:11:25:8c:3b:a2
    Note, no "RUNNING" keyword.
If I make a hostname.bge0 and /etc/hosts entry it fails on reboot. I get an error message similar to this:
WARNING bge0: send index -1: device didn't RESET!
Its my understanding that these are 5721 (or something like that)... but they appear to be supported by the driver or perhaps only partially?
    Any ideas?

OK I assumed the tape drive is scsi dat ... correct ?
Is the main disk (boot disk) also scsi, if so do they use the same scsi controller ?
If the boot drive is scsi and the tape drive is on the same controller we can asume the scsi controller is recognized but the tape drive is not.
If there is a bios utility to access the scsi controller ... eg: adaptec uses <ctl> <a> check to see if the tape drive shows in the setup for the card if not the OS will never see it and you will have to troubleshoot from there.
If the main disk is "not" scsi and the tape drive is, have you checked to see if the scsi controller is recognized and supported ?

cacaoadm create-keys -f The VM we're using was from a template Solaris 10 VM, so we had to change the hostname. As suggested, we also performed a sysuncofig, and also recreated the cacao keys (as above), then installed Application Server, AM SDK (remote) then Portal Server.
We have been in contact with Sun support, and they have told us to put the machine in DNS (rather than just the hosts file), which we have also done.
    Any ideas?
