Solaris 8 x86: Problems with VNC

I have installed Solaris 8 x86 on my "slave PC" and now I want to access it remotely from my "master PC". The networking runs well so far. Ping, telnet, and internet access are all possible.
Now I have installed the tightVNC 1.2.9 package on the Solaris 8 system. When I start the vncserver, the following error message appears:
"Couldn't start Xvnc; trying default font path.
Please set correct fontPath in the vncserver script."
When I try to connect with the vncviewer from my master PC, the screen is started but remains all grey.
In the vncserver script, the originally set fontPath did not work. I replaced it by some paths which are obviously recognized but with the same result.
Any help is appreciated very much.
Thank you in advance!
Thomas

I commented all the set fontPath commands in the vncserver script, and now it works properly as desired. Indeed, it seems like no adjustments for font paths are needed.
The blocking point was, that in the script ~/.vnc/xstartup, the command line "startkde" has to be inserted instead of "kde" which is used in Linux systems for that case.
Thank you!
Thomas

  • Solaris 10 Install problem with SATA drives

Hi, I'm trying to install solaris 10 on a x86 system with 2 SATA drives running in a on board SATA controler (not RAID).
During install the setup fails to detect the disks, to install Windows XP I have to provide disk drivers during the setup procedure by pressing F6 and providing the drivers, alas I cannot seem to find either a way to provide SATA controler drivers to solaris, nor a suitable driver for solaris .
Any help would be extremely apreciated.

I had the same SATA problem on builds 69 and 72 of Solaris10, but the Release version recognises and installs readily on SATA drives on three mainboards that I use. They are Tyan s2875 with dual opteron cpus, Asus k8N-E with a 754 pin athlon64 cpu, and Gigabyte GA-K8NS-939 with a939 pin athlon64.
My Mandrake Linux10 says it sees the SATA drives, but never installed on them.
FreeBSD 5.3 Release for AMD64 sees the SATA and installs with no problems.
Hope this gives you some encouragement to persist

  • Solaris9 x86 problem with network cards, ACPI, IRQs

    Hello!
For the last two days I've been trying to solve the problem of Solaris9 x86 not being able to use my network card. I have tried with 3c905CX-TX-M, RealTek 8139 and Realtek 8029 and none of them works. The problem is the following:
Everything is properly configured, networking etc., but the cards can only send and cannot receive packets. When trying to ping, the packets leave the NIC but none of the reponses are detected by NIC. When I check with 'kstat elxl' I can see that 'intr' is zero, and out_packets is increasing as it's sending packets.
From the discussion forum I can see that this same problem has been known for several years. One of the conclusions is that Solaris x86 sucks at dealing with IRQ setup and that the best thing is to disable ACPI and 'PnP OS' option in BIOS. However, I've tried all releases of AMI bios and none them has neither of those options. I have played with various priority levels in BIOS but all that has accomplished is that the card, when first started, captures a few interrupts/packets but then stops again. This is usually just enough to finish the ARP exchange (arp -a shows the remote host).
And of course, all the cards work just fine in WindowsXP and Linux. And all the cards work nice in another PC which runs the same Solaris 9 x86.
My motherboard is Gigabyte 7VTXE. (The other one in which it works is ASUS P2B-DS).
    I would really appreciate help!

I had almost identical problem today on an HP Kayak - which happened to be dual CPU one. The fix
    set pcplusmp:apic_forceload = -1
in /etc/system worked for me. The only drawback is that it also leaves the machine single CPU. AFAIK this (downloadable) S9x86 kit is licensed only for one CPU anyway, so I wonder if something has been fixed in the code to make sure it is not run on multi-CPU systems. Before the fix, mpstat showed thousands of interrupts on CPU0, both CPUs were constantly busy at about 70% and there was no network connection on a number of cards I tried (3Com 90x - elxl, Intel iprb, another one with Realtek 8139 was never recognized, so I did not bother too much to find if there is a fix for this); pinging out resulted in the hub port light blinking, nothing comes back.
Anyway, the fix is good enough to test s9 for now; everything else seemed to be OK. If it may be of some use for somebody, don't go into the disk option of the Solaris Management Console; the machine in question had Windows 2003 server (RC2) installed before Solaris9, the disk tool decided that there was no label on the disk and asked to write it on; I clicked the 'cancel' button, but the partition table was irreversibly damaged, so I had to start from installing W2k3. My guess is that tool has been tested only with Sparc, so there is no issue with BIOS level partitioning there. BTW, system info of the SMC insists that the CPUs are Sparcs...

    hello all,
finally found the solution for this problem. thanks to Willi Burmeister who posted a simiral question and a summary to the sunmanagers mailing list:
this was triggered by bug 6404527. It's a missing blank in the pkginfo file of nearly all
    staroffice packages.
    here is a quick workaround:
    # cd /var/sadm/pkg
    # grep -l ": R" */pkginfo | xargs perl -pi'.bak' -e 's/: R/: R/'i am happily running U9 now :P
    cheers,

  • Solaris 10 x86 coexist with Windows XP

    Hi,
I can install Solaris 10 on my laptop (Toshiba Dynabook SSX) through jumpstart installation. After that, I boot up my laptop in Windows 98 boot disk to create and format a FAT32 partition. This partition used to install Windows XP in unattended mode. When I finish Windows XP installation. I reboot my laptop in Solaris 10. Durning the boot sequence, the system reports a lot of "BAD BLOCK" harddisk errors. I tried to fix this by "fsck -y". Since the partition is badly damage. there is no way to recover it. I guess it should be a bug for this beta release. I hope that someone in Sun can figure out this problem.

Sounds more like a Windows 98 or Windows XP problem, that thrashes other OS's fdisk partitions.
I'm not sure, but does Windows 98 properly support big (>32GB) IDE disks in LBA mode? I'd double check
the fdisk tables from Solaris with "fdisk -W - /dev/rdsk/....p0" after you've created and formatted the FAT32
partition from Windows 98, maybe the FAT32 partition overlaps the Solaris fdisk partition?

  • Requested extension com.adobe.Vibration is not supported for Windows-x86 Problem with Cs6,air3.4.

While compiling my application on Flash CS6 with Air for iOS 3.4, I am getting the error given below:
The content cannot be loaded because there was a problem loading an extension: Error: Requested extension com.adobe.Vibration is not supported for Windows-x86.
I am using vibration.ane file which got it from Adobe (http://www.adobe.com/devnet/air/native-extensions-for-air/extensions/vibration.html)
Anybody out there who knows how to solve this problem!
    Thanks.

    1) The vibration ANE from Adobe does not support Windows.
    2) The iOS simulator (adl) is not a virtual machine but rather it is a native Windows app, thus the platform your app runs on is Windows not iOS.
What Adobe needs to do to avoid confusing everyone is one of two things:
    1) Include a stub for Windows (and MacOS) in the Vibration ANE.
    2) Make it possible to deploy an app to a platform where the ANE is not supported, but produce a runtime error upon an attempt to use the ANE. The developer could then put logic in the app to detect the underlying platform and make adjustments.

  • Non-US keyboard layout problem with VNC

    Hi everyone,
I've got an arch box at work running tigervnc through an ssh tunnel so that I can work from home when I need to.
Everything is great, as long as I'm using and ASCII keyboard layout.
When I switch layouts, the keystrokes just don't get through to the server.
Here's  what I use to switch layouts:
    setxkbmap -layout us,ru -option 'grp:alt_shift_toggle'
So I need to type in russian, and I hit alt-shift, as usual, and start typing, but nothing is echoed back to me.  I can tell that the keystrokes are just not getting to the destination because if I'm at a terminal and I'm switched to the ru layout and I type something and hit enter, I just get a newline, as if there was nothing typed at all.
    Any ideas?

    Hi,
Why are the characters mixed up in the session?
This issue can occur if the keyboard language has been switched on the remote PC while running a remote desktop session. In the case you would like to switch to a different keyboard
    language follow these instructions.
    Important:
The remote PC selects the system language of the device running the remote desktop client and not the keyboard language. When switching the keyboard language on your device,
you need to manually switch the keyboard language on the remote PC.
    1. Open settings on your device.
    2. Tap General and then tap International.
    3. Tap Language and select the language running on the remote PC.
    4. Open the RD Client and connect to the remote PC and check if the Windows keyboard language matches the language that you selected.

  • Keyboard messed up on Solaris 10 x86 after applying patch update

I have run into a keyboard problem on my Solaris 10 desktop. The keyboard is messed up. When I type root then it echoes as eiir. It is a Solaris 10 x86 system with PS/2 keyboard. The keyboard layout is US-English and type is generic 104 keys. The keyboard works fine in text mode but gets messed up as soon as the graphical login screen comes up.
The output for eeprom kbd-type is kbd-type=US-English(104-Key).
The output for kbd -l is
    type=6
    layout=33 (0x21)
    delay(ms)=500
    rate(ms)=40.
Running command showrev -p | grep 118966 shows

    Problem solved... me the n00b...
After reading the log in /var/dt/Xerrors more closely this time I found that it was trying to load module "Keyboard" for the device "Keyboard1" and was not able to find that module. The log was also suggesting that this module is deprecated and I should use "kbd" instead... Made the changes in xorg.conf and things are good now...

    Hi All,
Looks like it was a driver / incompatibility / unsupported issue since 2 other much smaller USB keys (Lexar USB Flash Drive – 32GB, SanDisk Cruzer Colors – 4GB) were successfully mounted automatically by volfs service as follows:
    # df -h
Filesystem             size   used  avail capacity  Mounted on

/vol/dev/dsk/c2t0d0/unnamed_rmdisk:c    29G    96K    29G     1%    /rmdisk/unnamed_rmdiskIt also appears that the Device status of Not Ready from “iostat –En” below may not be correct either since both smaller drives are working fine:

  • Where to obtain Update 3 for Solaris 10 x86

    Hello all,
For some reason my smpatch is broken and won't download patches. I need to locate Update 3 for Solaris 10 x86 but with all the new changes to the website I'm completely lost and can't seem to find the download link.
    Can anyone help out?
    Thanks,
    Rob

    Hi
google "download solaris", first hit, at the bottom of the page "Looking for prior versions of Oracle Solaris?"
    Here it says
"Note 1: Previous versions of Solaris 10 are no longer necessary as the latest release includes support for all Solaris 10 supported platforms and includes important enhancements not found in earlier releases."
and "Solaris 10 10/08" (aka Update 6) is the oldest available.
Note that you now need a support contract to access all patches except for patches to the "Oracle Solaris" compiler (if installed) and to the patch system.

  • Several mysterious problems with Solaris 11 x86 install

    Hi folks,
I've recently installed Solaris 11 x86 as a replacement for Solaris 9 SPARC on an Ultra 2 machine. I like the operating system, but I've promptly acquired some mysterious problems. The computer is a Fujitsu Siemens Esprimo E2500 with a Pentium 4 HT 3.06 GHz processor, 2 GB RAM, an 80 GB SATA disk and a 147 GB SCSI disk.
I have had a few occasions on which the screen goes totally blank, the monitor claims that there is no signal, and I have to restart the machine. However, with the blank screen, the hard drive activity light is sometimes still flashing. This happens predictably when I try to log off (as opposed to shutting down) and when I use Totem media player and click on anything inside the Totem window. The motherboard has built-in graphics and brief specifications can be found here:
    http://uk.ts.fujitsu.com/rl/servicesupport/techsupport/professionalpc/ESPRIMO/Datasheets/ds_esprimo_edition_e2500.pdf
Yesterday my PS/2 keyboard started causing the motherboard to beep crazily when I use it. It beeps rapidly 4 times, then prints the expected character. However, the problem doesn't occur at the initial log in screen. The mouse cursor has also gone beserk on one occasion, flying all over the screen (I had this problem with a previous PC, but a different OS, and thought it was a hardware fault, which I why I got this new computer). With the keyboard problem, the machine is basically unusable. However, it is configured as a dual boot machine, and the keyboard problem isn't present with Windows XP.
There are also a few smaller, odd problems. Occasionally all the icons vanish from my Gnome desktop. The command prompt also mysteriously changed from $chris@pluto to $bash-4.1 just before the keyboard problem appeared, although that might have had something to do with me copying my home directory to a different disk and editing the /etc/auto_home file (moving the home directory worked fine). Also, unlike with Solaris 9 SPARC, I find that I have to have external SCSI devices switched on at boot time, should I want to use them later. That's a pain. With Solaris 9, I could run "boot -r" when I first attached the device, then switch on the SCSI devices and mount them whenever I wanted.
After the useful advice I received here about "more" and "less", I thought I'd post these problems and see if anyone can help. I'd really appreciate some advice. Can anyone identify likely causes for these problems? Which problems can I expect to solve and which do I have to live with?
    Many thanks,

    Hi folks,
I've recently installed Solaris 11 x86 as a replacement for Solaris 9 SPARC on an Ultra 2 machine.

At some stage there are problems with creation of a new state...
I remember some time ago (Solaris 2.8) there where problems like that with ipfilter, but now ipfilter included in Solaris distribution, hardware tested and so on...
    New reincarnation of a problem?
Somebody has similar problems with the software x86 Solaris 10?
Thanks, Roman Gnatenko (rvg at co.ru)

Hi. I've never seen anything like this, and it seems to be something which
the JDBC module is going to be an innocent victim of, rather than a
contributor to... Your best course is to open an official support case.

  • Problems with Solaris Web Console on Solaris 10 x86

    I recently installed Solaris 10 x86 (10/08 release) on a Sun x4450.
I have installed the Jan 14, 2009 patch cluster.
I was having some problems connecting to the Web Console to do some ZFS administration. That's when I installed the patch cluster.
After the patch cluster install I couldn't connect at all. This problem was resolved here: http://forums.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5249136
Now when I login to the Web Console I get a message that says:
"+No application is registered with this Sun Java(TM) Web Console, or you have no rights to use any applications that are registered. See your system administrator for assistance.+"
I'm logging in as root, so it shouldn't be a rights issue.

Quick Solution to the problem you are facing
How to configure ZFS Webconsole Administration
    run this command
    wcadmin deploy -a zfs -z zfs /usr/share/webconsole/webapps/zfs
you should be able to see & Manage ZFS in Applications area of webconsole.
    Enjoy ! Cheers

  • Oracle 10G installation problem, and errors on SOLARIS 10 x86

    HI.
I installed the last version of oracle 10g on a x86 SOLARIS 10 system.
When the installer arrived at Configuration assistants, the window is stopping, and I can't see forward. But when I look at the installAction.log, the installation is checked as OK (?).
When I launch sqlplus, and startup inside, it is said the ora-00205 error (problem with control files), and in the end, I'm really suprised there's no the database I told the installer to create at the beginning. But should I be surprised? As I didn't see really the end of the installation, and the installer didn't propose me the PATH where to install the DB, well, I guess there's something wrong.
Could anybody tell me how to solve these problems, please?
    Thank you :)

    Two options:
    1. Create database using DBCA - execute $ORACLE_HOME/bin/dbca
    2. Create database manually (without DBCA)
