Solaris Appears to Hang on Boot - No Login Prompt/X Doesn't Start

Hi,
I've using Solaris for just a few days, and I'm starting to get somewhere with it, but I've hit a problem I'm not sure how to resolve.
The system appears to boot normally up to the point of the prompt "Wait for the login screen before attempting login".
I used to be able to produce a Login prompt during this message, then X would start, but since I installed OSS, it just sits there, not responding. X seems to fail to start, but no messages are displayed.
What do I need to do exactly in order to stop OSS loading? I think this is the cause of the fault.
OSS is up to date, but Solaris 10 is a clean install (2008.05).
I'm going to need a step-by-step to fix this. I don't even know how to invoke a console based text editor right now - I've been using gedit from X.
Best regards,
AstroTux.

Astro,
Have just experienced the same thing - exactly - on SXCE snv_103 (11/08)! In the past, in debugging X server issues, we could boot to safe mode and edit pertinent files from there...
NOW, we're getting no login screen at all, and can't use the keyboard to 'stop' the xserver from running, as it apparently isn't! Did you find a fix for this? Lou

iMac Troubleshooting topics section shows this topic for SnowLeopard10.6 and suggests that there may be a hard disk problem.  Recommendation was to startup iMac from the 10.6 install disk and use Disk Utility to attempt to repair the hard disk.  Lion 10.7.2 was downloaded so there is no disk to attempt this repair with.  Any suggestions or experience with the gray cloth screen in Lion and a progress bar under the Apple logo on boot up?  It seems to take a lot longer to boot up now to get a login prompt or desktop than when it was fresh out of the box in July 2011 with Snow Leopard 10.6  Thanks for your help!

    Hello
    just an idea
first shut down your mac then , unplug your keyboard if is a wired one , or remove battery from your wirless keyboard then power up your mac , does the progress bar appear again ?
or more simple try an other keyboard if is possible , preferably a wired keyboard

  • T6300 ALOM hangs at login prompt?

    Hi,
We have a T6300 server. I have got the ALOM details from the chassis server.
When I connect to the ALOM IP address it hangs at the ALOM login prompt:
    login as:
Copyright 2008 Sun Microsystems, Inc. All rights reserved.
Use is subject to license terms.
Sun(tm) Advanced Lights Out Manager CMT v1.6.4
    Please login:
Any ideas why it would load and then hang and not let me type at the "Please login:" prompt?
I'm guessing I need to reboot the ALOM, is this possible to do without effecting the running server? If so how?
    Thank You

That question has come up before bout that Knowledge Base article; all of the tips and suggestions in that remain valid under 10.4 (I suspect the article was retitled when Tiger first came out, in anticipitation of a never-needed Tiger version of the same article).
Would you know if anyone had been playing around with keyboard inputs in System Preferences? That's a 'gotcha' where if someone is playing around with the settings and decides to set say Dvork keyboard as the input method, normal Roman keyboard keystrokes will be putting out the wrong characters. (That happened on one lab Mac once; after figuring out the problem, I used a Dvork keyboard map to translate the desired password into Dvork-equivalant keystrokes.)

  • Latest round of patches on fabric booted system causes Solaris 10 to hang

I have a fairly stock install of Solaris 10 6/06 on a T2000 which uses a Emulex HBA to boot from Xiotech SAN attached disks.
    I installed the following patches:
    118712 14 < 16 R-- 24 SunOS 5.10: Sun XVR-100 Graphics Accelerator Patch
    120050 05 < 06 RS- 28 SunOS 5.10: usermod patch
    120222 16 < 17 R-- 19 SunOS 5.10: Emulex-Sun LightPulse Fibre Channel Adapter driver
    120629 02 < 08 R-- 24 SunOS 5.10: libpool patch
    120824 08 < 09 R-- 39 SunOS 5.10: SunBlade T6300 & Sun Fire (T1000, T2000) platform patc
    121118 11 < 12 R-- 21 SunOS 5.10: Sun Update Connection System Client 1.0.9
    122660 08 < 09 R-- 17 SunOS 5.10: zones patch
    124258 03 < 05 RS- 19 SunOS 5.10: ufs and nfs driver patch
    124327 -- < 04 R-- 34 SunOS 5.10: libpcp patch
    120222 16 < 17 R-- 19 SunOS 5.10: Emulex-Sun LightPulse Fibre Channel Adapter driver
When I rebooted the system it will no longer boot up.
If I do a {ok} boot -m milestone=none and attempt to start all the services by hand, I see:
    svc:/platform/sun4u/mpxio-upgrade:default (Multipath upgrade)
State: offline since June 4, 2007 4:05:58 PM CDT
    Reason: Start method is running.
    See: http://sun.com/msg/SMF-8000-C4
    See: man -M /usr/share/man -s 1M stmsboot
    See: /etc/svc/volatile/platform-sun4u-mpxio-upgrade:default.log
It appears the mpxio-upgrade script is failing to start.
If I run /lib/svc/method/mpxio-upgrade by hand the script hangs and can not be killed. Since I am on console the only want to recover is to send-brk and reboot. I truss'ed it and the last device it was trying to read is:
    82: open("/devices/pseudo/devinfo@0:devinfo", O_RDONLY) = 5
    82: ioctl(5, 0xDF82, 0x00000000) = 57311
This is the second time this has happened in the last 2 months. The first time the problem was resolved with a new kernel patch. However Sun could not tell me what the exact problem was.
Has anyone else run into SAN/Fabric booted servers failing to boot after various patches?

We have discovered the problem. It has nothing to do with SAN booting at all. It has to do with having a device plugged into the serial port. I was using this system to act as serial console for another device in the same rack. When the Sun kernel engineering asked me to unplug the serial cable and reboot I was skeptical, but it worked.
Sun has filed this as a bug. The only work around right now is to make sure you have nothing plugged into the serial port.

  • Solaris zone hangs at boot

    Hi Everyone!
A zone that I just created and configured just seems to hang at boot and even I tried killing the zoneadm process nothing helped.
Any ideas what could cause this?
    Thank you...
    Svetlana

I was able to get into the zone, I did the following:
    bash-3.00# zoneadm -z ecds-traffic boot -- -s
zone 'ecds-traffic': WARNING: zone is in state 'ready', but zoneadmd does not appear to be available; restarted zoneadmd to recover.
    bash-3.00#
    bash-3.00#
    bash-3.00
    Then from another terminal:
    bash-3.00# ps -ef | grep ecds-traffic
    root 11474 1 0 09:22:00 ? 0:00 zoneadmd -z ecds-traffic
    root 11496 11490 0 09:22:32 pts/1 0:00 grep ecds-traffic
    bash-3.00# kill -9 ecds-traffic

  • Hang on boot

    Hello,
I have a 2-cpu, dual-core, opteron 270 based Arima HDAMA machine. It hangs on boot 4 out of 5 times, but if it starts, it is rock solid for days. If it hangs, it is most often after the following message:
workaround applied for cpu issue #6323525
This message is ejected after initialisation of the last core (core 3 starting the count at 0).
Does anyone have a suggestion what I could do?
    Thanks,

This message is ejected after initialisation of the last core (core 3 starting the count at 0).This might suggest that you have an entry in the /etc/system file and the comment is not using a '*'. Check the /etc/system file for that text and if it's in there, verify the integrity of the file itself. If it's not in the system file then there's probably a script somewhere that echo's that statement.
Bug ID 6323525 - "Mutual exclusion primitives don't work as expected" was fixed with Solaris 10 update 1 (about 5yrs ago) so if you're running anything higher than Kernel patch 118822-30 (SPARC) or 118844-30 (x86) then the workaround is no longer required.
Does anyone have a suggestion what I could do?1) Correct any typo's in /etc/system, if they exist
    2) If the system boots, check the SMF logs to see if you can identify which SMF service was trying to start when the system hung (assuming we got this far in the boot process). SMF logs can be found in /var/svc/log, and you'll need identify those files which include the date/time of the failed boot.
    3) Collect a crash dump when the system appears hung. Raise a support call and we (Kernel Team) can review the crash dump to establish what the system was waiting for during the boot process. See Doc ID: 1003085.1 - "Solaris[TM] Operating System: Forcing a kernel core dump on an x86 or x64 system" for instructions for collecting the crash dump.
    Hope it helps,
    Steve

  • After updating to Lion 10.7.2 System now hangs on boot

I downloaded and installed Lion 10.7.2 update last night onto my MacBook Pro. The update appeared to download ok after quite some time, but during the install the system appeared to hang transfering files. I left the system installing over night, but when I looked at it this morning the update had not completed and I was not getting any responce from the system at all.
Now when I reboot the system I get the Apple logo with the status simbol pinning, but thats it. I have booted into Verbose mode and it looks as if the boot is hangs on the BlueTooth driver install.
I can get into the Mac OS X Utilities and was thinking of reinstlling the MAC OS, but am unsure about this as I don't know if this will erase all my data.
I am fairly new to Mac trouble shooting so any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    John

Sure, Here is a more detailed list of steps that I performed.
    1) Prior to issue, I had a bootable external drive with MacOS 10.7 on it. It was not connected during upgrade.
    2) After apply 10.7.2 upgrade on my internal drive, unable to boot post upgrade
    3) Plugged external drive into Mac, rebooted Mac, holding down Option key for list of boot drives, selected external drive
    4) From OS running on external drive, launched safari, went to apple support, downloads, macos, and downloaded 10.7.2 combo updater.
    5) After download completed, mounted Combo Update disk image, double click update installer
    6) Agree to license, selected internal drive as target for installation
    7) After combo upgrade install finished, started control panel, selected startup disk, selected internal drive and clicked reboot.
    8) System boot fine from internal drive.

  • Arch Live CD x64 hanging during boot at "triggering uevents"

    Hello!
I recently was recommended Arch by a friend, and after I followed the 'Newbies Guide' and burning a live CD to install Arch with, it appears to hang during Live CD boot at "installing uevents."
I am trying to install Arch as a dual boot on a late 2008 MacBook Pro which is currently running x64 Windows 7. I have plenty of HD space (100gb free and 100gb unallocated to install Arch onto).
    Here is a picture:

I get the same error weather I try to install x64 or i686 (I think that's what it's called). Is there any reason for this?

  • Solved: Mac appears to hang when "Enter Time Machine..."

I run TM and keep my sparse bundle on a Synology Diskstation NAS.  Since the begining in March 2011, my Mac has always appeared to hang after trying to "Enter Time Machine...."  I am now running Lion 10.7.2 and DSM 3.2-1944 and seeing the same issue.  It turns out that this appears to be a bug in the fancy TM graphics interface.
TM uses a cascaded Finder window to allow you to brouse your backup history.  If you run multiple "Spaces" and the existing(new) target Finder window does not reside(popup) on your current Space, you never get to see the cascaded display.  Yet, if I ensure that there is only one Finder window open and it is displayed on my current desk top, then the fancy cascaded TM interface displays just fine.
Note, if you do happen to "Enter Time Machine..." on a secondary Space, just hit ESC.  TM will exit and the current Space will pop over to the target Finder window.  If you "Enter Time Machine..." a second time, it will work fine as the target Finder is now on the current Space.  Looks like someone failed to issue "set current Space" before disabling the Spaces manager...
    UPDATE:
Looks like I am rediscovering known bugs, #3: http://pondini.org/TM/E4.html but above is an alternate workaround to turning off "Spaces".

If you're really at 10.5.8, do you have the 10.5 Install disk to boot from & Install that... so we can get further?

  • Fresh install of solaris 10 x86 hangs after 'Configuring devices'

    Hi All,
I just received a new SuperMicro server with an LSI MegaRAID SAS 9261-8i controller. While trying to install Solaris 10 it hangs after "Configuring devices". I checked the LSI page and Solaris 10 is supported according to them. Any ideas how to proceed?
Fairly new to Solaris on x86 hardware.
The system has a Xeon X5690 processor in an Intel Workstation Board S5520SC motherboard. The motherboard documents claim that not disabling usb 2.0 can hang an install. I have disabled the usb 2.0 in the bios but the system still hangs. Booting it with the -kd and -kv options don't give much information.
Any help is appreciated. I might be returning these machines if I can't get this worked out.
    Cheers,
    Steve

See if you can add the verbose option "-v" to the kernel boot options. I think you can get to the GRUB menu off the Solaris 10 install disk. That should tell you what device is causing the hang, or at least the last device that worked.
Also, can you try Solaris 11 and see if it gets past that point? A few years ago I has a similar issue with Solaris 10 on a Dell server. Solaris 11/OpenSolaris worked fine, though. IIRC I could work around the issue if I disabled the 2nd CPU - Solaris 10 had a problem bringing up the 2nd CPU on that Dell's CPU/MB config.

  • Solaris 10 Install Hangs at 15% on my HP DL 585?

Solaris 10 Install Hangs at 15% on my HP DL 585
I have taken out all the additional extra cards so I am left with the basic box, it has been configured to run in Raid 1 so my four disks become two.
I can still get it to bring up a shell and do other things, but the installer just appears not to want to go pass 15%
    Help?

Which version of Solaris and how much memory do you have in the system.

  • HP Pavilion Media Center m8300f Hangs on boot

I have a HP Pavilion Media Center m8300f which came loaded with Vista Home Premium. About 18 month sold. Recently the computer would hang on boot up. I used the system restore and went back to a safe install. This worked ok until Windows added more patches which caused the same problem to occur again. After one or two of these episodes I was not longer able to return to a safe install. I ran the system recovery several times to check the hardware. Everything turned up good. Since I did not have a good set of recovery disks I decided to install XP on the computer and then upgrade to Vista. XP installed without a single problem. I purchased a NEW Vista Home Premium because I could later upgrade free to Windows 7. I tried to install Vista over XP. The process would start and then hang. So I reformated the hard drive using an external USB unit on another computer, replaced the drive and tried to install Vista off the DVD. It would not boot up. As a test using the Vista DVD I purchased, I upgraded XP on a separate computer to Vista. Worked very nice.
I ordered a set of the recovery DVDs and tried them. They would not boot up. I replaced the hard drive with a new SEAGATE SATA drive because I felt the connectors were not locking in. I still could not get the recovery DVDs to run. I went back to the XP and it installed. So here I am with a computer that willl not run or install Vista but will run XP. Also HP does not provide the XP drivers for the hardware on this computer.
Does anyone know why Vista will not install or how to get it on this computer?
I installed a NEW Seagate SATA hard drive for drive "C" because the connectors where not locking in place. rmated the hardI purchased the Recovery DVDs from HP and tried to reinstall it.

I had the same problem with computer halting with blue screens, black screens, etc.  Motherboard had 6 capacitors with bulging tops.  I found a replacement Nettle 2 motherboard from seller diypc2008 on E-Bay for the cost of $75.00 with free shipping.  Installed new motherboard and computer works like new.
It appears like at around 2 years, this problem occurs from what I read on this forum.  Look for capacitors on the motherboard with bulging tops.  I fixed my computer by replacing motherboard after running many hours of diagnostics, replacing power supply, and changing out drives.

  • MacBook Pro 4,1 hangs on boot

Hi, a friend has an identical MacBookPro4,1 (Early 2008, 2.4GHz) to me which is hanging during the boot process just at the point where the boot screen would change to the first of two 'blue' screens.
I have tried booting OSX from a DVD and USB image, but it hangs at the same point.
Comparing verbose boot messages the point at which it hangs is at the 'AirPort: RSN handshake complete on en1' message, which is the last message mine displays before switching to the blue screen. Looking at my system logs, the next message of the kernel logs appears to be 'APExternalDisplay Memory Reserved: 8331264 bytes', which suggest it is the video system that is the problem.
Curiously it will sometimes boots the Windows 7 Bootcamp image properly but with occassional visual artifacts.
Any thoughts other than replacement of the logic board?
    TIA

    Hi Xerict,
just a question, did your mac have any problems to boot?
I tried with arch boot usb stick and it doesn't work (it doesn't even appear in the list of bootable options at the start).
On the other hand, the same usb stick on a recent MacBook Air boots without any problem.
    Thanks, Elisiano

  • [Solved] Laptop hangs at boot.

    Hi,
Since today, my laptop hangs at boot (after I input my password for disk encryption). If I boot without 'quiet' the last message is "Started LVM2 PV scan on device 254:0" as well as some messages about Bluetooth. After these, simply nothing happens.
The last change I made to my system before this problem started to occur was to patch xf86-input-synaptics with this patch for palm detection: https://gist.github.com/silverhammermba … caa63c86f1 I'm not sure if this is related, but I can't think of anything else I changed.
Is there a way I can at least get a shell so I can view dmesg output or try to revert to the default synaptics driver?
    Regards,
    wo0p

Thanks, I managed to get to a shell using CTRL + ALT + F2. I was certain I tried that, but I might have been hitting CTRL + ALT + 2 the whole time, quite embarrassing...
Can I just revert to the repository version of xf86-input-synaptics by removing it with pacman -R and then reinstalling with pacman -S ? If so, this doesn't fix my problem.
I looked through dmesg and the journal but couldn't see any errors. Is there something I missed?
EDIT: Thanks for the help, I think the problem was that installing the package had created a config (with .pacnew) in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ directory which caused the problems.
I would still like to know if I can revert to the repository version of a package in the way I outlined above though.
