Solaris Basic Boot DIsk?
I've been tasked with "sterilizing" of a bunch of Sun workstations and servers. I need a boot disk or boot cd which will allow me to boot the machines and run dmesg so I can record the system specs of each one and then run BCWipe or similar to wipe the hard drives. Some systems have cd drives some only have floppys.
I don't have the passwords for any of them so I can't just boot normally.
There is a program called Tufftest which will do this for PCs but I basically need the Sun equivalent.
I'm very new to Sun systems, any suggestions appreciated.
Hi,
You can download the DCA diskette from the web site:
http://soldc.sun.com/support/drivers/dca_diskettes/#s8
You would find all the releases of Solaris. You can check the integriry of the CD which you have burnt by mounting it on another Solaris machine(if you have any). You can try booting from the cd 1 of 2 after you have created a small dos partition and made it active.
Hope that helps.

Solaris 8 boot disk...
I have been having problems trying to install Solaris 8 to a PC. I keep getting the error "can't open - no VTOC" when booting with the CD and people have been suggesting I need to use the Solaris fdisk and format tools but I cant find a boot disk anywhere on the CD or the web site. Can anyone tell me where to download one or maybe email me one???
Getting frustrated in Ohio,
Thanks a millionHi,

Download boot disk of Solaris 2.5.1
Hi, all.
Where can I download a boot disk of Solaris 2.5.1?
ThanksWhat do you mean? An ISO image of the boot CDROM? Or
do you want to copy a boot disk from one system to
another? I don't know about the former, my guess is
that unless you are booting from already existing
media from a CDROM on a system in your LAN, which is
doable, the answer is "no".
The latter idea, using dd to copy one disk to another
is doable with cavaets. The disks must be of the
same type and the system hardware configs must be
the same. There are help documents on SunSolve about
the details. There are many risks and even though
you get a copy, it might fail to boot. -
How to back up a ZFS boot disk ?
Hello all,
I have just installed Solaris 10 update 6 (10/08) on a Sparc machine (an Ultra 45 workstation) using ZFS for the boot disk.
Now I want to port a custom UFS boot disk backup script to ZFS.
Basically, this script copies the boot disk to a secondary disk and makes the secondary disk bootable.
With UFS, I had to play with the vfstab a bit to allow booting off the secondary disk, but this is not necessary with ZFS.
How can I perform such a backup of my ZFS boot disk ?
I tried the following (source disk: c1t0d0, target disk: c1t1d0):
# zfs list
NAME USED AVAIL REFER MOUNTPOINT
rpool 110G 118G 94K /rpool
rpool/ROOT 4.58G 118G 18K legacy
rpool/ROOT/root 4.58G 25.4G 4.50G /
rpool/ROOT/root/var 79.2M 4.92G 79.2M /var
rpool/dump 16.0G 118G 16.0G -
rpool/export 73.3G 63.7G 73.3G /export
rpool/homelocal 21.9M 20.0G 21.9M /homelocal
rpool/swap 16G 134G 16K -
# zfs snapshot -r rpool@today
# zpool create -f -R /mnt rbackup c1t1d0
# zfs send -R rpool@today | zfs receive -F -d rbackup <- This one fails (see below)
# installboot /usr/platform/`uname -i`/lib/fs/zfs/bootblk /dev/rdsk/c1t1d0s0
The send/receive command fails after transfering the "/" filesystem (4.5 GB) with the following error message:
cannot mount '/mnt': directory is not empty
There may be some kind of unwanted recursion here (trying to back up the backup or something) but I cannot figure it out.
I tried a workaround: creating the mount point outside the snapshot:
zfs snapshot -r rpool@today
mkdir /var/tmp/mnt
zpool create -f -R /var/tmp/mnt rbackup c1t1d0
zfs send -R rpool@today | zfs receive -F -d rbackup
But it still fails, this time with mounting "/var/tmp/mnt".
So how does one back up the ZFS boot disk to a secondary disk in a live environment ?OK, this post requires some clarification.
First, thanks to robert.cohen and rogerfujii for giving some elements.
The objective is to make a backup of the boot disk on another disk of the same machine. The backup must be bootable just like the original disk.
The reason for doing this instead of (or, even better, in addition to) mirroring the boot disk is to be able to quickly recover a stable operating system in case anything gets corrupted on the boot disk. Corruption includes hardware failures, but also any software corruption which could be caused by a virus, an attacker or an operator mistake (rm -rf ...).
After doing lots of experiments, I found two potential solutions to this need.
Solution 1 looks like what rogerfujii suggested, albeit with a few practical additions.
It consists in using ZFS mirroring and breaking up the mirror after resilvering:
- Configure the backup disk as a mirror of the boot disk :
zpool attach -f rpool <boot disk>s0 <backup disk>s0
- Copy the boot block to the backup disk:
installboot -F zfs /usr/platform/`uname -i`/lib/fs/zfs/bootblk /dev/rdsk/<backup disk>s0
- Monitor the mirror resilvering:
zpool status rpool
- Wait until the "action" field disappears (this can be scripted).
- Prevent any further resilvering:
zpool offline rpool <backup disk>s0
Note: this step is mandatory because detaching the disk without offlining it first results in a non bootable backup disk.
- Detach the backup disk from the mirror:
zpool detach rpool <backup disk>s0
POST-OPERATIONS:
After booting on the backup disk, assuming the main boot disk is unreachable:
- Log in as super-user.
- Detach the main boot disk from the mirror
zpool detach rpool <boot disk>s0
This solution has many advantages, including simplicity and using no dirty tricks. However, it has two major drawbacks:
- When booting on the backup disk, if the main boot disk is online, it will be resilvered with the old data.
- There is no easy way to access the backup disk data without rebooting.
So if you accidentally lose one file on the boot disk, you cannot easily recover it from the backup.
This is because the pool name is the same on both disks, therefore effectively preventing any pool import.
Here is now solution 2, which I favor.
It is more complex and dependent on the disk layout and ZFS implementation changes, but overall offers more flexibility.
It may need some additions if there are other disks than the boot disk with ZFS pools (I have not tested that case yet).
***** HOW TO BACKUP A ZFS BOOT DISK TO ANOTHER DISK *****
1. Backup disk partitioning
- Clean up ZFS information from the backup disk:
The first and last megabyte of the backup disk, which hold ZFS information (plus other stuff) are erased:
dd if=/dev/zero seek=<backup disk #blocks minus 2048> count=2048 of=/dev/rdsk/<backup disk>s2
dd if=/dev/zero count=2048 of=/dev/rdsk/<backup disk>s2
- Label and partition the backup disk in SMI :
format -e <backup disk>
label
0 -> SMI label
y
(If more questions asked: press Enter 3 times.)
partition
(Create a single parition, number 0, filling the whole disk)
label
0
y
quit
quit
2. Data copy
- Create the target ZFS pool:
zpool create -f -o failmode=continue -R /mnt -m legacy rbackup <backup disk>s0
Note: the chosen pool name is here "rbackup".
- Create a snapshot of the source pool :
zfs snapshot -r rpool@today
- Copy the data :
zfs send -R rpool@today | zfs receive -F -d rbackup
- Remove the snapshot, plus its copy on the backup disk :
zfs destroy -r rbackup@today
zfs destroy -r rpool@today
3. Backup pool reconfiguration
- Edit the following files:
/mnt/etc/vfstab
/mnt/etc/power.conf
/mnt/etc/dumpadm.conf
In these files, replace the source pool name "rpool" with the backup pool name "rbackup".
- Remove the ZFS mount list:
rm /mnt/etc/zfs/zpool.cache
4. Making the backup disk bootable
- Note the name of the current boot filesystem:
df -k /
E.g.:
# df -k /
Filesystem kbytes used avail capacity Mounted on
rpool/ROOT/root 31457280 4726390 26646966 16% /
- Configure the boot filesystem on the backup pool:
zpool set bootfs=rbackup/ROOT/root rbackup
Note: "rbackup/ROOT/root" is derived from the main boot filesystem name "rpool/ROOT/root".
- Copy the ZFS boot block to the backup disk:
installboot -F zfs /usr/platform/`uname -i`/lib/fs/zfs/bootblk /dev/rdsk/<backup disk>s0
5. Cleaning up
- Detach the target pool:
zpool export rbackup
I hope this howto will be useful to those like me who need to change all their habits while migrating to ZFS.
Regards.

[Sol 10 11/06 SPARC on Sun Blade 2500] Could not determine boot disk?
dear all,
I have a problem during installation of Solaris 10 11/06 Sparc on Sun Blade 2500. After I choosing "Initial Install" at "Select Upgrade or Initial Install" stage, appears the following error message :
"Note : Default install is not possible. Default boot disk could not be determined"
I have already concerned that the installation DVD is well burned, and the DVD-ROM is worked, but I'm not sure that the HD itself is well or defect. Could anyone tell me or figure out how would I do?Most likely you have a disk problem. I think it may not have found a disk. If the install process left you in a shell, I would suggest using format, to see what it thinks. My guess it does not see any disks.
Another option from the ok prompt (also called OBP), is run probe-scsi or whatever the device type it. Check the options available at the ok prompt. -
I need a Windows XP Boot Disk CD
Hello,
I have a Satellite L35-S2151 Laptop and it will not load windows all the way as I get a blue screen "Unmountable Boot Volume". I looked up the error message on Microsoft's website and I need to have a Windows XP CD to start up my machine. My computer did not come with a Windows CD when I purchased it from Best Buy. How can I order a Windows XP Reboot CD with Toshiba? I do not want to restore my computer to factory settings, I just want a reboot CD. Please help.
Thanks,
NoaUnfortunately, you can't order a Win xp boot disk CD from Toshiba. I had the same problem you have, unmountable boot volume, had no boot disc (thought the Toshiba recovery disc was a boot disc, but nooooo, it would reformat and erase all my files). I was advised to burn a CD boot disc from various online download areas, but didn't have a working computer to do it on, nor could I borrow anybody's so I was stuck. Microsoft only has floppies (6) that you can download for Win XP, but how many of us have floppy drives anymore? not me. It sucks that Microsoft doesn't keep boot discs around for sale for WinXP users, it's not like WinXP is some ancient OS geez. But unless you can burn your own boot CD (which isn't as easy as some people lead you to believe , I think sometimes it just doesn't work or is glitchy). I tried everything to get my system to boot, including buying a Knoppix LIVE CD which I ordered online for $3.99 from a software place. It didn't work either, but you could always try it for a cheap fix if it works for you.
I ended taking out my old hard drive after trying various things with no success, buying a new hard drive , buying a hard drive enclosure to put the old drive in so I could transfer the files I want to save over to the new drive. I'm stuck at that point so far. I hope you don't have to go all through that. But I was basically told the best hope is to somehow burn or have someone burn for you a Win XP boot disc CD. I presume by "disc" you mean CD and not floppy. If you are looking for floppy boot discs as I said, you can download them onto 6 discs from Microsoft. Good luck! -
Can't boot windows - select boot disk and computer goes to sleep
I've got a Mac Pro 3,1
I've had windows 7 installed on an IDE hard drive in the CD bay.
Lately, I was getting BSODs, so I decided to reinstall - I reformatted the hard drive and I'm trying to move forward.
I haven't been able to boot any kind of windows installation disk! USB, DVD, anything!
I select the boot disk on boot up (hold option, select the windows install) and the computer seems to boot (shows the bootcamp logo) then just goes black (like it's sleeping - monitors off, not an 'active black' screen) There is no hard drive noise - this thing is basically off.
I've tried using rEFIt, using different USB drives, DVDs, everything. I can get into rEFIt, select the boot disk - and it's the same problem. Windows won't boot!
What gives? I've had no luck looking online for this issue. Some folks have a 'black screen' with an iMac - but this isn't a driver issue - the computer is not booting!never mind, I changed the connection to a different usb port and problem solved. Thanks anyway.

Can Disk Utility create a duplicate boot disk identical to the original?
Here is what I have in mind.
I have a PB12G4 with an external Firewire Bootable Drive.
I used the "RESTORE" command to "Restore" the PB onto the External Drive, and... IT WORKED, I can even start up my PB from the external FW Drive...
EXCEPT, that in the process a few extra folders (which do not appear on the PB Drive) have now become visible.
Is there a way to make an exact "copy" of the PB Boot Disk without these weird folders showing up?
Moreover is this RESTORE method reliable, or am I looking at some long term issues? Imagine, the advantage:
no OSX CDs, multiple installation DVDs, long hours sitting in from the computer etc..., just one click of the mouse and a couple of hrs golfing while the drive is being copied.
RegardsIgnore those folders. Cloning would bring the same folder. The .hidden file basically tells the machine which folders to hide. You want those folders to exist on any clone you make. The only way to not make those folders appear is to boot off the drive, and make sure the .hidden file includes those same folders in that same path.
But they are important folders for the operation of the system, without which it wouldn't boot at all.
The biggest issue is that you can't make subsequent copies only copy that data which has been added, changed, or remove copies of data which have been deleted. It can only restore the complete system to an empty system. For true cloning I use Shirt Pocket's Superduper. For more on backing up see my FAQ:

Can't install Windows "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key"
I'm running OSX 10.9.3 on my Macbook Pro 13-inch, Early 2011 and trying to install Windows 7 via Boot Camp Assistant and I'm using a flash drive loaded with bootable copy of Windows 7 Ultimate (legal, if that makes any difference).
Here's what I've been doing:
1. Plug in my flash drive, then on Boot Camp Assistant, click "Install Windows 7 or later version"
2. Set my Windows partition to 45GB and continue... so far so good...
Then the problem:
3. My computer restarts, goes to a black screen with the message "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key"
The flash drive is still plugged in but is it not being recognized or something? Nothing happens when I press any keys.
I can use OSX just fine by holding down "Alt/Option" on restart, but in my case what can I do to continue further with the Windows install? It's basically an empty partition as of now. Any help appreciated!Ive been having this problem and have been trying to figure out how to fix it for almost a week now. I have a 2011 17" MBP with the superdrive removed. Ive tried many different methods and many different methods to no avail. If anyone can help, please do!
xxzy, have you tried the KUNU method?

"No bootable device --- insert boot disk and press any key" after setting up Bootcamp
Hi guys,
I am trying to install Windows 7 via Bootcamp but after setting up Bootcamp and restarting the computer I get the error message "No bootable device --- insert boot disk and press any key".
I use an iMac with a DIY Fusion Drive consisting of a 120 GB SSD and a 1 TB HDD.
Since Bootcamp can only be installed on the HDD I believe disk1 is the interesting one. Here is the output of sudo gpt -r -vv show disk1:

I have gdisk installed and am ready to mess around. Any help would be greatly appreciated! So, when I started my iMac yesterday morning it couldn't boot into OS X anymore either. Several hours of restoring later I am back to square one. I tried installing Windows 7 via Bootcamp again but got the same error message. This time I noticed though that Bootcamp asked me to remove the bootable option from the USB drive with the support drivers in order to install from DVD. Does that ring any bells? I am building another USB drive right now, hoping it would ask me again but this I will decline and try to boot from it.
When you restored, was a Time Machine restore used? TM does not backup Bootcamp and does an erase of the partition. It may also erase the entire disk (including the Fusion drive) if the specific backup of the volume layout of the disks indicates a pre-Bootcamp layout.
My MacBook Pro is a 2009 model and also once had a built-in optical drive. I have no idea why it would work on there but not on the iMac.
You also wrote
When I plug the external DVD drive in, the boot manager recognizes a "Windows" disc and an "EFI Boot" disc. If I select the "Windows" disc I get a black screen with a blinking dash.
The blinking dash indicates that it is working, but does not have the requisite drivers to enable the GPU/Mouse/Keyboard on the media being used.
In the MBP case, did you have two drives installed in the MBP, a Fusion configuration, and then were able to successfully install Bootcamp?
For example on a Mac mini I have a DIY Fusion drive, but the sequence was done differently. Bootcamp was installed using a USB stick+Windows 7 ISO.
1. The two disks are not in a CoreStorage set up initially.
2. The second disk is partitioned (64Gb) and a Bootcamp W7 install completed via USB (this is different HW as compared to IMac, because it has no Optical drive).
3. After the HDD is partitioned, the first partition and the SSD are then used to create a CoreStorage volume.
4. Here is the working version and disk layout. (I plan to erase both disks, put W7 on a partition on the SSD, and make the non-Bootcamp+entire HDD in a CoreStorage volume).

Boot up from other node's boot disk
Hi,at the moment I got problem to boot up one of two nodes-cluster, because its boot disk seems to be damaged. Is it possible to boot up from other node's boot disk? If yes,how to do it? If not,are there any ideas, beside replacing the damaged boot disk? Because the machines are in testbed, I think my compay doesn't want spend much money to replace the disk in this short time =)
The version is SOLARIS 8 and SUN Cluster 3.0.Hi,
Sorry to disappoint you but you cannot in Sun Cluster have one node boot from the boot disk of the other node. Do you have a backup of the boot disk?
Your best option is to replace it I guess

Netra T1 booting problems, works only if I "boot disk"
I'm having a problem booting my Netra T1 AC200. When I issue the "poweron" command from the LOM or when I issue the "reset" command from the ok prompt, the system fails to boot, gives me an error, and drops back to the ok prompt. However, if I type "boot disk" at the ok prompt, the system will boot just fine. I have tried playing with setenv, but eventually returned all of those values to their defaults. I have a fresh install of Solaris 9.
The error message and the output of printenv are below.

Re: Sun Fire v490 / Solaris 9 booting from CD, Network problems
Hi Folks,
Apologies in advance for the length of this post.
For the purposes of disaster recovery I have built a custom CD based on the Solaris 9 installation disk with our third party backup / restore software included on it.
After the rcS script has setup networking it runs a bash shell so that I can label / partition / format the hard disks as necessary then use the third party software to recover the system.
This works fine on almost all the machines we've tested (Ultra 10s, Ultra 30s, FS Prime Power 400)
On one Sun Fire v490 however I seem to have problems with networking...
Part of the customised rcS script makes the following call
ifconfig ce0 10.4.20.20 netmask 255.255.0.0 upto configure the NIC. However when the rcS script leaves me at the shell I'm unable to ping anything.
The output from ifconfig - a looks like...
lo0 flag=..
inet 127.0.0.1
ce0: flags=1000823<UP BROADCAST,NOTRAILER,MULTICAST,IPv4>
mtu 1500 index 2 inet 10.4.20.20 netmask ffff0000 broadcast 10.255.255.255 ether 0:14:4f:0:be:beThe only thing that looks odd to me is that there's no "RUNNING" entry for ce0 that I get if I boot from the same CD on my other machines (Ultra 30s & Ultra 10s)
The broadcast address looks wrong, but again it's the same when I boot from th CD on my other test machines and they all seem to work.
I'm pretty sure that ce0 is "plumbed", 'cos if I "unplumb" it from the shell prompt then it doesn't even appear in the output from ifconfig.
Someone has suggested that it's a connectivity issue, but if I boot normally rather than from my custom CD then the networking is fine.
As a test I tried removing the drivers for hme from the CD then booting one of my Ultra30s but in this case the entry for hme0 was completely absent from the output of ifconfig.
So I've concluded that the driver for ce0 is at least there on the v490.
So for the moment I'm confused as to why the ce0 appears on the output for ifconfig, but has no RUNNING 'flag'
Anyone got any ideas
Many thanks in advance
Regards
Kevinhello
you have an error in your interface configuration
you should have
you are using a class A ip adress but with a class B netmask
ip 10.4.20.20
netmask 255.255.0.0
broadcast should be 10.4.255.255

Solaris 10 "No disks found!" -- but disks are, indeed, there!
I am attempting to install Solaris 10 on an E450. I have 4 18G SCSI disks installed in the E450.
When I boot from the install cd (Solaris 10 Install Disk 1), it boots up just fine, and I go through the initial configuration menu (networking, name service, kerberos, etc.), and when it gets to "Configuring System", it stops at 4% with the error "No Disks Found! Please make sure your drives are properly cabled and powered up.".
Clicking "OK" drops me into a terminal window. Running format at this point show all the drives are, indeed, there. I have reformatted and repartitioned the drives, but all to no avail.
Any ideas? Any/all help is MOST appreciated!ALL
Found the answer!!!!
Seems that the Solaris installer doesnt understand EFI labels, and if (like me) you have been playing around with linux / freebsd ultrasparc ports, you may have inadvertently removed the backup partition (which spans the entire drive, 3rd partiton).
Without this format thinks its dealing with an EFI disk, and you can label it till the cows come home, the installer just doesnt want to know.
The answer is:
'format -e'
select the drive
'label'
select SMI
dont choose format.dat (unless it contains your drive .. unlikely)
choose SCSI 2 autodetect.
partition as per admin manual.
You may also have to do an 'installboot ...etc etc.."<br /><a href="http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/817-5093/6mkisoq39?a=view" target="_blank">http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/817-5093/6mkisoq39?a=view</a><br /><br />explains it<br /><br />I can now install Solaris 10<br /><br />The Sproggg<br /><br />PS:<br />I reckon that a brand new drive might need the same treatment.... YMMV<br /><br />PPS:<br />if your disks are over 2 tb they have to use the EFI labelling method ... if you have these you can afford your own sun support contract to figure it out....
