    Hi all,
    Current environment is Solaris 10 SPARC 64 bit OS with Hitachi SAN for shared storage and Sun E6900 servers.
    For Oracle 10g RAC (10.2) and ASM, I am setting up the vote disk and OCR files on shared raw storage area network.
    Assume that I have a 35Gb LUN carved out on raw device for the vote disk and OCR for a 2-node Oracle 10g RAC cluster and since the vote disk and OCR only require 120MB of storage, is there a way to use only a 120MB slice from the LUN or do I need to allocate the entire LUN/raw device to the vote disk?
    I am looking for a way to avoid wasting space for the OCR and vote disk with my 10g RAC cluster and we are using raw devices and Oracle 10g RAC Clusterware with Veritas filesystem for the disk management. Can I have several slices on Solaris 10 with raw shared storage (Hitachi) to triple mirror my OCR and vote disk files?
    It seems odd to have to use an entire 35GB LUN just for 2 small files: vote disk and OCR. Is there a way to partition a 120MB slice on one of the devices and allocate the rest to ASM?

    In our RAC env.
    we have 1GB LUN for OCR and Voting Disk and 100GB LUN for ASM disk. we have 4 Node RAC env on AIX with 2 SAN storage on Hitachi system for our Application.
    we keept 1st Voting diks on SAN-1 2nd Voting Disk on SAN-2 and third voting on SAN-3.
    OCR disk on SAN1 and OCR_MIRROR Disk on SAN-2.
    we have ASM DIsk with Normal Redundancy . Failure Group 1 on SAN-1 and
    Failure Group 2 on SAN-2

    I haven't changed any settings regarding region codes

    You may have run discs from different regions,these would be commercial DVDs. If so most DVD players need to be told what region the disc is from. Have you done this by chance, if you are not sure look at the region numbers listed on the commerical DVDs you have and see if some use different numbers.

    Hi Experts,
    I have a quick question about Normalized Forwarding of ACI Fabric.
    Does ACI support a VXLAN Tunnel between Leaf(Leaves) and VMware-vDS, and MS-vSwtich? Otherwise any plan to provide that function in the future?
    If there is no function and plan How is Normalized Forwarding possible with VXLAN headers that are generated by each Hypervisor? Of course I know it's possible for a VM on ESXi to communicate with another VMs on Hper-V without VXLAN but I just focus on Normalized Forwarding between Multi-Hypervisor.
    Or If AVSs are implemented on ESXi and Hyper-V repectively, is it possible to make a VXLAN Tunnel between Leaf(Leaves) and AVSs on ESXi and Hyper-V? And what is a example of that usage?

    Hi Paul,
    As I understand, ACI Leaf to the VMware-vDS is still vlan so no tunnel for VXLAN. When we integrate Vcenter with the ACI, We define the vlan range for the traffic from VM-ware-vDS to map EPG to a VMware ESXi port group. 
    For the MS-vSwitch, As It support OpFlex agent could act as VTEP but not part of the fabric. But I am not sure about this. 
    As AVS is part of the fabric so It will act as a VTEP (VXLAN Tunnel between Leaf(Leaves) and AVSs)
    But what is the benefit are you looking? Traffic normalization is still there because Traffic within the fabric is encapsulated as VXLAN. External VLAN/VXLAN/NVGRE tags are mapped at ingress to an internal VXLAN tag.
    Note:the VLAN ID has local significance for the leaf node

    Well there is Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck witch includes step by step instructions to run disk repair without the install disk.
    But before doing that, it's a good idea to backup. You may want to troubleshooting your superdrive / disk before hand. if I disk repair fails you may need the disk working to re-install the OS.
    Dose the computer read any DVDs? if no, you may want to use Troubleshooting the slot load optical disc drive.

  • 8 and 16 disk RAID 10 span question when using Dell H700 controller

    Build the raid, load a copy of win2008r2 server without a key in eval mode.  Pull one of the drives.  Pull another one on another pair.  It should still be running. 
    Once you're convinced that it's good to go, put the drives back in, blow away the config in the controller and set it back up the same way.  Then load whatever hypervisor you're going to put on it. 

    Bear with me on this one! I've avoided RAID for long enough and I'm needing some advice. I have a number of Dell R710 servers with PERC H700 controllers. With the exception of one server which is an R720, all have a capacity of 8 SAS drives (with the oddball having a capacity of 16). Most of these were configured with RAID 5 just before my arrival at the organization. With some new 600GB drive purchases this month, I plan on moving all our servers to a RAID 10 config. So my question is about spans and how to arrange them across connectors (is that the right terminology?). So if I have 8 drives, with 0-4 being on connector 1, and 5-7 being on connector 2, and assuming 2 disk per span, would the correct way to arrange each span look like the screenshot below? That would reduce the likelihood of data loss due to a bad cable right? I'd...

    Hi a, Glad you removed Norton. On Skype, go to Tools & Manage add ons. Find any add ons that pertain to
    Skype and Disable them. Once these problems have been solved then you can always enable any that have been disabled.
    Anytime you lose an Internet connection you will receive those kind of errors. Wireless connections are subject to a loss of signal. I would contact your Carrier and report them.
    Any site or game that tells you to update Flash Player, ignore. You did the right thing going to Youtube. If that works, then disregard anything to the contrary. That site is having a problem, not you. Take care not to disrupt your Flash Player Installation!!
    On Avast not being able to update would most likely be due to the loss of signal. That Avast updated 3 times is not unusual. That is just a sign of additional risks. I had Avast and during some periods that was done also. No problem.
    While you are still in the process of removing programs and troubleshooting, if there are any add ons/plug-ins/extensions that are causing an issue, I would disable them. Once you have your troubleshooting done, then see about them.
    On McAfee, didn't that Install with FP at one time? I think you removed that as I recall. You can refer to the instructions I gave you to remove it and make sure it is not there.

  • Solaris Cluster 3.3 on VMware ESX 4.1

    I am trying to setup Solaris Cluster 3.3 on Vmware ESX 4.1
    My first question is: Is there anyone out there setted up Solaris Cluster on vmware accross boxes?
    My tools:
    Solaris 10 U9 x64
    Solaris Cluster 3.3
    Vmware ESX 4.1
    HP DL 380 G7
    HP P2000 Fibre Channel Storage
    When I try to setup cluster, just next next next, it completes successfully. It reboots the second node first and then the itself.
    After second node comes up on login screen, ping stops after 5 sec. Same either nodes!
    I am trying to understand why it does that? I did every possibility to complete this job. Setted up quorum as RDM from VMware. Solaris has direct access to quorum disk now.
    I am new to Solaris and I am having the errors below. If someone would like to help me it will be much appreciated!
    Please explain me in more details i am new bee in solaris :) Thanks!

    What i noticed here is cluster seems to be buggy. Because i have tried to install cluster 3.3 on physical hardware and it gave me excat same error messages! interesting isnt it?
    Please see errors below that I got from on top of VMware and also on Solaris Physical hardware installation:

  • MDT Config UEFI Specific disk and partition?

    Installing Win8.1 with MDT2013 on UEFI enabled machines everything seems to be ok.. Until... Injecting drivers. The deployment cannot proceed because of destination disk. Sounds obvious because Uefi makes multiple partitions unlike non-uefi that can be installed
    on the first partition.
    I've created an extra step to the "Format and partition disk" and named it "Format and Partition Disk - UEFI". In this step I've set an option "Task sequence variable IsUEFI equals True". So when it is "True" the step
    will format the drive in GPT (as is required for UEFI boot). This seems to work good. I see in the installation the step "Format and Partition Disk - UEFI" when it's a uefi machine, and the original step if it is a non uefi machine. Obviously the
    original step will have also an option "Task sequence variable IsUEFI equals False".
    The problem comes when we get to the step "Install Operating System". Here I made the same change like I did above. (added extra step with extra option:
    The original step "Install Operating System" will have install location: "Specific disk and partition"
    Disk 0 Partition 1.
    The added step will have install location "Specific disk and partition"
    Disk 0 Partition 3. (Because UEFI has multiple partitions)
    For some reason the deployment will accept the step "Format and Partition Disk - UEFI" but in the install step it will take the "Install Operating System - Legacy" (so it will try to install to disk 0 partition 1 as I see in BCD log).
    Is there any reason that the same condition  works at the format step and not at the install step?
    We choose the option install to "Specific disk and partition" because of problem when have the location set at "logical drive letter stored in a variable" (problem described:
    link)

    Solution in my case was going for the "logical drive letter stored in a variable" instead of "Specific disk and partition".
    Note when applying this: must keep using "OSDisk" variable or it will throw errors (problem described in
    this link)
    So I deleted the "UEFI" steps, and renamed the "Install Operating System - Legacy" to before. Removed the query for the IsUEFI variable. MDT will automatic install to MBR or GPT based on device.

  • ASM - Adding Disks and DiskGroups

    I am quite eager to start using ASM on one of our test databases.
    Using localconfig add, I have configured CSS, and am now using the dbca wizard to create an ASM instance and add disks and diskgroups.
    I have reached the point in the wizard, where the wizard is showing no disk groups and we have to create new disk groups.
    At this point I click "Create New" button, but in the "select member disks" it shows no disks to select. I though ASM can manage filesystems, disks and raw devices. Why is it not showing any disks here? There are plenty of disks when I do a df -h on the unix prompt. Shouldnt the disks available in the filesystem be available here?
    I am asking this question knowing pretty well that it is probably the daftest question ever asked on this forum. Sorry for that!

  • HOWTO: Create 2-node Solaris Cluster 4.1/Solaris 11.1(x64) using VirtualBox

    I did this on VirtualBox 4.1 on Windows 7 and VirtualBox 4.2 on Linux.X64. Basic pre-requisites are : 40GB disk space, 8GB RAM, 64-bit guest capable VirtualBox.
    Please read all the descriptive messages/prompts shown by 'scinstall' and 'clsetup' before answering.
    0) Download from OTN
    - Solaris 11.1 Live Media for x86(~966 MB)
    - Complete Solaris 11.1 IPS Repository Image (total 7GB)
    - Oracle Solaris Cluster 4.1 IPS Repository image (~73MB)
    1) Run VirtualBox Console, create VM1 : 3GB RAM, 30GB HDD
    2) The new VM1 has 1 NIC, add 2 more NICs (total 3). Setting the NIC to any type should be okay, 'VirtualBox Host Only Adapter' worked fine for me.
    3) Start VM1, point the "Select start-up disk" to the Solaris 11.1 Live Media ISO.
    4) Select "Oracle Solaris 11.1" in the GRUB menu. Select Keyboard layout and Language.
    VM1 will boot and the Solaris 11.1 Live Desktop screen will appear.
    5) Click <Install Oracle Solaris> from the desktop, supply necessary inputs.
    Default Disk Discovery (iSCSI not needed) and Disk Selection are fine.
    Disable the "Support Registration" connection info
    6) The alternate user created during the install has root privileges (sudo). Set appropriate VM1 name
    7) When the VM has to be rebooted after the installation is complete, make sure the Solaris 11.1 Live ISO is ejected or else the VM will again boot from the Live CD.
    8) Repeat steps 1-6, create VM2 and install Solaris.
    9) FTP(secure) the Solaris 11.1 Repository IPS and Solaris Cluster 4.1 IPS onto both the VMs e.g under /home/user1/
    10) We need to setup both the packages: Solaris 11.1 Repository and Solaris Cluster 4.1
    11) All commands now to be run as root
    12) By default the 'solaris' repository is of type online (pkg.oracle.com), that needs to be updated to the local ISO we downloaded :-

    At this point there are no quorum disks, so 1 of the node's will be designated quorum vote. That node VM has to be up for the other node to come up and cluster to be formed.
    To check the current quorum status, run :-

    Now the cluster is in 'Installation Mode' and we need to add a quorum disk.
    Shutdown both the nodes as we will be adding shared disks to both of them

    Create 2 VirtualBox HDDs (VDI Files) on the host, 1 for quorum and 1 for shared filesystem. I have used a size of 1 GB for each :-
    *$ vboxmanage createhd --filename /scratch/myimages/sc41cluster/sdisk1.vdi --size 1024 --format VDI --variant Fixed*
    *0%...10%...20%...30%...40%...50%...60%...70%...80%...90%...100%*

    *$ vboxmanage createhd --filename /scratch/myimages/sc41cluster/sdisk2.vdi --size 1024 --format VDI --variant Fixed*

    *Disk image created. UUID: 899147b9-d22f-4495-ad55-f9cf15346caf*

    Attach these disks to both the VMs as shared type
    *$ vboxmanage storageattach solvm1 --storagectl "SATA" --port 1 --device 0 --type hdd --medium /scratch/myimages/sc41cluster/sdisk1.vdi --mtype shareable*
    *$ vboxmanage storageattach solvm1 --storagectl "SATA" --port 2 --device 0 --type hdd --medium /scratch/myimages/sc41cluster/sdisk2.vdi --mtype shareable*
    *$ vboxmanage storageattach solvm2 --storagectl "SATA" --port 1 --device 0 --type hdd --medium /scratch/myimages/sc41cluster/sdisk1.vdi --mtype shareable*
    *$ vboxmanage storageattach solvm2 --storagectl "SATA" --port 2 --device 0 --type hdd --medium /scratch/myimages/sc41cluster/sdisk2.vdi --mtype shareable*
    The disks are attached to SATA ports 1 & 2 of each VM. On my VirtualBox on Linux, the controller type is "SATA", whereas on Windows it is "SATA Controller".
    The "--mtype shareable' parameter is important

    Mark both disks as shared :-
    *$ vboxmanage modifyhd /scratch/myimages/sc41cluster/sdisk1.vdi --type shareable*
    *$ vboxmanage modifyhd /scratch/myimages/sc41cluster/sdisk2.vdi --type shareable*
    24) Start both VMs. We need to format the 2 shared disks
    25) From VM1, run format. In my case, the 2 new shared disks show up as 'c7t1d0' and 'c7t2d0'.

    27) Make sure the shared disks can be used for quorum :-
    On VM1
    +# ./cldevice refresh+
    +# ./cldevice show+
    On VM2
    +# ./cldevice refresh+
    +# ./cldevice show+
    The shared disks should have the same DID (d2,d3,d4 etc). Note down the DID that you are going to use for quorum (e.g d2)
    By default, global fencing is enabled for these disks. We need to turn it off for all disks as these are SATA disks :-
    +# cldevice set -p default_fencing=nofencing-noscrub d1+
    +# cldevice set -p default_fencing=nofencing-noscrub d2+
    +# cldevice set -p default_fencing=nofencing-noscrub d3+
    +# cldevice set -p default_fencing=nofencing-noscrub d4+
    28) It is better to do one more reboot of both VMs, otherwise I got a error when adding the quorum disk
    29) Run clsetup to add quorum disk and to complete cluster configuration :-
    +# ./clsetup+
    === Initial Cluster Setup ===
    Enter 'Yes' for "Do you want to continue"
    Enter 'Yes' for "Do you want add any quorum devices"
    Select '1) Directly Attached Shared Disk' for the type of device
    Enter 'Yes' for "Is it okay to continue"
    Enter 'd2' (or 'd3') for 'Which global device do you want to use'
    Enter 'Yes' for "Is it okay to proceed with the update"
    The command 'clquorum add d2' is run
    Enter 'No' for "Do you want to add another quorum device"
    Enter 'Yes' for "Is it okay to reset "installmode"?"Cluster initialization is complete.!!!
    30) Run 'clquorum status' to confirm both nodes and the quorum disk have 1 vote each
    31) Run other cluster commands to explore!
    I will cover Data services and shared file system in another post. Basically the other shared disk
    can be used to create a UFS filesystem and mount it on all nodes.

  • Hardware recommendations for learning Solaris Cluster on Sparc (at home)

    On a low budget, I'd like to put together a Solaris Cluster on Sparc (at home). At "work" in the next year we will be implementing a Solaris Cluster to run Tomcat and a custom CORBA server. (These apps will be migrated from very old hardware and VCS) The CORBA server is a Sparc binary, hence the need for Sparc. I'd like my home-office cluster to be similar in function to what I have at work. At work we have (2) T5120 Servers and a 2540 (2500-M2) Array waiting. From looking at the Solaris Cluster docs, it looks like you use a 2540 in a Direct-Connect configuration. We will be going to Solaris Cluster training eventually, but not soon. In the meantime, I'd like to keep/gain some skills/experience.
    Potential (cheap) Home Cluster:
    (2) SunFire V245 or (2) T1000 or (2) something_cheap
    connected to
    (1) Storedge D2 or (1) Storedge S1
    My main desire, is for the interconnects and failover on this Home Cluster to behave the same way as the T5120s with the 2540 Array. Example, if I yank a HD (or replace) then I'd like it to give very similar messages to what I will face at work in the future. I'd like the creation of ZFS pools etc to work similarly. I'd like SCSI cards (HBAs or whatever) and cabling to be cheap.
    Any recommendations on hardware> Servers? Arrays? SCSI Cards/cabling?

  • Configure Solaris cluster to failover guest domain when NICs were down

    Hi,
    I am running Solaris 11 as the control domains on 2 clustered nodes running on Solaris Cluster 4. There is a Solaris 10 guest domain which is managed via the Solaris cluster in failover mode.
    2 virtual switches connected to 2 different network switches are presented to the guest domain. I would like to use link based IPMP to facilitate HA for the network connections. I understand that in this case the IPMP can only be configured within the guest domain. Now the question is how do I configure it in such a way that the guest domain fails over to the second cluster node (standby control domain) if both network interfaces are down? Thanks.
