Solaris @ Compiz on a notebook with Intel 945GM

I have successfully installed OpenSolaris nv91 on Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Pi1505. Next I have enabled 3D effects, i.e. desktop on a cube and windows wobbling. It worked perfectly, but...the input from the keyboard has been blocked. In order to regain the possibility for normal work I have disabled 3D effects. Is there any patch or the hope that future release will work correctly? By the way - graphic system of this notebook is based on Intel's 945GM chipset.

• Xinerama with a Mobile Intel 945GM graphics card

Hi,
I'm trying to write a xorg.conf to enable Xinerama. But as you've already guessed it isn't working.
Xinerama works perfectly fine, if i use xrandr.
Could please look over my config and tell me what's wrong?
Thanks in advance!

As to your editing of 'vga' to 'xf86-video-intel': you should replace it with 'intel'. There are many, many sample xorg.conf's out there that use the intel driver, so google is your friend.

You can specify the amount of videoram in xorg.conf and you need to add the 1280*800 resolution to it too. That's all I had to do to get it to work on my father's laptop.
Zl.

• Ftp is very slow locally with intel solaris 8 with 98 se buffalo ( 100mps)

why? what to check? ping ok.

I have tried FTP in 98 SE with LINUX 6.0 RH via LINKSYS router with ver 1.37 ( 1.37 is even worser than 1.36-because the status is not refresh but itself) is ok.
but 98SE with intel solaris 8 is very slow with wu-ftp(ipswitch) 1%, then 1%....etc an hour later still 1%. I shut down the solaris try a few times, then it is ok. all connection is tight.

• Multiple copies of display on Tecra A7 (Intel 945GM)

I am having problems with my Tecra A7 display, using a Mobile Intel 945GM chip. At one point I started getting multiple copies of my desktop on my screen -- two down, two across, with the very top of the fifth and sixth copy coming in on the bottom.
Initially this was just for the Toshiba and ??Resuming Windows?? screen, but eventually it stayed this way all the time. Windows works normally, just with four really small copies of the desktop. An attached external monitor works fine. I tried checking the Full screen (no borders) box in the Intel graphics manager, as well as all the hotkeys I saw listed there -- nothing helped.

Sounds like the display of your notebook has some connection problems or don't know, maybe there is something wrong in general with the display.
Because, as you already tested an external monitor with your machine, I doubt a driver update or reinstallation would help here.
Nevertheless you could try it, but to get to know what the exact problem is, go to an ASP and let them check your notebook.

• Mouse pointer invisible - intel 945GM

Hey people, thought I would document this in case others have problems.  I have partially solved the issue, but if someone knows a better solution please contribute.  I think this is specific to the intel xorg driver but not totally sure.
I rebooted my eeepc (Intel 945GM, using stock driver) today and when I got into X there was no mouse pointer.  I quickly found that the mouse is in fact there, you can right-click and get a menu etc, its just there is no pointer so your flying blind.
A bit of Googling suggested it was something to do with using xrandr to enable/disable outputs, which is what I do.  At home the eeepc sits on the desk connected to my external monitor.  In my .xinitrc I have it set up so it detects when its connected to the monitor and automatically enables it (VGA) and disables the laptop screen (LVDS).
So to try and get the mouse back I re-enabled the LVDS
xrandr --output LVDS --auto
The eeepc screen comes back on (in clone mode) and sure enough the mouse pointer is visible on that screen, but not on the external VGA.  After a bit of tooling around I found that if you enable both screens in extended desktop mode, the pointer is then visible on both.
xrandr --output LVDS --right-of VGA --auto
Once the pointer is working on both screens you can then turn off the LVDS again, and the pointer remains working on the external, everything back to normal.
xrandr --output LVDS --off
PART 2 - This is actually a question if anyone can help me
In order to use dual monitors like an extended desktop, you will find that you need to set the virtual desktop size in your xorg.conf display section.  Something like:
virtual 2304 1024
BUT...since we now bask in the glory that is hot-plugging and hal wizardry, I don't have an xorg.conf.  Does anyone know how to set the virtual framebuffer size using xrandr, without having to use an xorg.conf?
And while I think about it, why do we even need to set a virtual size manually really, xorg knows the dimensions of connected displays, you would think it could set a default virtual framebuffer to the width of the connected outputs, would make it much easier. /rant
Anyway, any more info on the subject much appreciated.

The cursor issue sounds like an upstream bug - you should report it to https://bugs.freedesktop.org.
Wittfella wrote:Does anyone know how to set the virtual framebuffer size using xrandr, without having to use an xorg.conf?
Can't be done.  The virtual fb size tells your graphics driver how big a framebuffer to allocate at X start time.  It can't be changed later.  Which is too bad, and a major limitation of randr.  I think it does set the virtual fb size correctly when it starts, but that size will be wrong when you add another monitor for example.

• [SOLVED] Macbook 2,1 Intel 945GM: no backlight property custom kernel

Hi,
I just finished compiling a custom kernel for my Macbook and for the life of me cannot figure out which option enables backlight control. I'm suspecting it might be CONFIG_FB_BACKLIGHT, but I can't actually find it via 'make menuconfig.' In other words, I can grep it from the raw config, but don't know where it is:
$ grep -A10 -B10 CONFIG_FB_BACKLIGHT .config
CONFIG_FB_CFB_IMAGEBLIT=y
# CONFIG_FB_CFB_REV_PIXELS_IN_BYTE is not set
# CONFIG_FB_SYS_FILLRECT is not set
# CONFIG_FB_SYS_COPYAREA is not set
# CONFIG_FB_SYS_IMAGEBLIT is not set
# CONFIG_FB_FOREIGN_ENDIAN is not set
# CONFIG_FB_SYS_FOPS is not set
# CONFIG_FB_WMT_GE_ROPS is not set
# CONFIG_FB_SVGALIB is not set
# CONFIG_FB_MACMODES is not set
# CONFIG_FB_BACKLIGHT is not set
# CONFIG_FB_MODE_HELPERS is not set
# CONFIG_FB_TILEBLITTING is not set
# Frame buffer hardware drivers
# CONFIG_FB_CIRRUS is not set
# CONFIG_FB_PM2 is not set
# CONFIG_FB_CYBER2000 is not set
# CONFIG_FB_ARC is not set
But menuconfig is like this:
--- Support for frame buffer
[ ] Enable firmware EDID
[ ] foreign endianness support --->
[ ] Video Mode Handling Helpers
[ ] Tile Blitting Support
It's hard to reproduce entirely here, but the point is that the config grep returns fb_backlight just above mode helpers/tilebitting, but above those are foreign endianness, and that's not where the backlight setting is.
The card is the Intel 945GM; on the default Arch kernel I can use xbacklight to adjust brightness. With my custom compiled one, I get "no outputs have backlight property" with xbacklight and, indeed, /sys/class/backlight is empty.
Would someone kindly tell me which kernel option provides the backlight property for this card?

@byte:
Thanks for the suggestion, and the link to the current config. I was wondering where I might find that. Not looking so promising so far:

I don't see much there to wonder about. CONFIG_FB_BACKLIGHT only gets triggered if certain drivers are enabled. But I don't have any of those. Most of that seems about right, and the end stuff is all specific laptop drivers.
I'll post back when this is done. The only other thing I can think of is the fact that I compiled in i915 and intel_agp vs. having them as modules. Should that make any difference?

• Intel 945GM/GMS/940GML Videoram

I installed Arch on my new Vaio VGN-N21S with an Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller.
http://vaio.sony.it/view/ShowProduct.ac … N+N+Series
I configured Xorg and it runs smoothly with the i810 driver. No issue.
But I can't use the whole amount of my shared video memory (224 Mb from specifics). Xorg uses only 8Mb, which is enough to get a 1280x800 desktop tough. I would like to play with True Combat Elite and I found videoram is not enough. I tried with the "Videoram" parameter in Xorg.conf... but it is simply ignored by Xorg.
Nobody knows where's the problem????

I dont think you need to specify videoram in xorg.conf, xorg should autodetect 256mb for 945gm. try without the videoram and see if it works better. For me it works best when I dont have any xorg.conf and let xorg decide all.

• Intel 945GM, Xorg, Kernel - performance

I know there is some sort of transition going on with graphics stuff (take that as your cue that this is nowhere near an area of expertise for me...).  I can put up with lack of games but last night I hooked my laptop up to my TV to watch some video and it was all choppy.  So, I was trying to improve this....
So this is what I have:
Intel 945GM Integrated Graphics Chipset
xorg-server-1.6.0-1
With kernel26-2.6.28.8-1 I tried EXA and UXA.  EXA gave me the issues with video play back and chromium-bsu is really slow.
Some not benchmarks from glxgears:
EXA - ~320FPS
UXA - ~640FPS
XAA = crash...
Switching to UXA gave me good chromium-bsu performance.  Yeah!
Then I read that kernel 2.6.29 was supposed to make things better.  So I built the rc8-git4 snapshot.
More not benchmarks from glxgears with the snapshot kernel:
EXA ~310FPS
UXA ~550FPS
chromuim-bsu runs at a low frame rate under both.
So it appears kernel 2.6.29 makes things worse...  Is there something else I should build along with it?  Or some config option I missed?

Hm. I had forgotten to subscribe to this thread :-p
I'm not exactly sure what the relevant part is. I would guess it's the framebuffer stuff, and that the vesa stuff could be deselected. Here's the full config for "Graphics support" and "Framebuffer hardware drivers" that I'm using:

• Driver issue with Intel ICH9M LPOC Inte. Controller post windows 7 upgrade

Upgraded from vistahome premium to 7 proffesional and have hardware issue with this device
on Intel(R) ICH9M LPC Interface Controller - 2919
The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)
There is no driver selected for the device information set or element.
To find a driver for this device, click Update Driver.
Went to intels website and could not find driver for 7 (there were drivers for vista & xp)
Any idea where to get driver for this

Hi,
It really helps us help you when you identify your notebook with its complete product name or product number and include it in a post in you thread..
Remove the battery and look in the compartment where the battery was installed. You should see a printed part number and a product name (p/n). Post one or both of them (with all alphanumeric characters here).

• Solaris 8 does not boot in Intel Platform

I got free Solaris 8 CD for Intel Platform. I installed it in a PC with Intel 133 cpu. It cannot boot up after it is installed. When I boot, it just keeps rebooting system and get an error says, "File Can not be synchronized". I know I made some mistake during installation. My PC has a 3COM network car but it is not connect to any network. During installation, I told that I connect to network and give a non-exist ip address.
My question is how do I reinstall it? I have tried to delete everything in hard drive but no luck to get installation start again.
The other problem I see is that the scan program tells me that there is an IDE card lack of resources and conflicts with another IDE card.
Could some one tell me how to make Solaris 8 working on my Intel Platform PC?
Thanks,
Cindy

I'm trying to install Solaris 8 using the Device Configuration Assistant diskette in order to boot from the CD Drive. The whole boot process goes through as described in the documentation but at the time that is trying to copy files to the HD in order to porceed with the install, I get the following error message:
<pre>
No Disks that meet the citeria in the Solaris
installer documentation found.
Please check the system or try another installation option
</pre>
When the software is checking for drivers/hardware, it recognizes the HD, but it seems that when trying to boot it doesn't. The documentation makes reference to fdisk and partitioning but I am not given the oportunity to do it at any time.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• [SOLVED] No brightness control with Intel!

Hi, i bought a new motherboard (Asus Z87-K) and a i7 4770k. In the processor box are witten that it have a Intel HD Graphics 4600 GPU.
I have never used a UEFI motherboard before and i passed all the day trying to configure the UEFI boot! ( im using gummiboot)
With the system instaled, i too installed the xf68 intel drivers. But i realized that that i cant control the brightness. So i tryed to do it mannualy editing the /sys/c ass/backlight/* archive. But in this folder don't have the intel folder, just an acpi_video0 folder, and when i edit it anything happen .
In my older notebook with a intel graphis, just edit the archive are the solution, but now it dont help.
I too tried xbacklight, and i receive the message.
# xbacklight +20%
No outputs have backlight property
The strange thing is that my lscpi output show me this:
$ lscpi | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200 v3/4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 06)
I readed something about boot configuration, but im noot using GRUB, and they say to add some paramethers to boot script.
I'm using HDMI!
Right now, anything solved my problem.

Your old computer was a laptop with integrated display, and your new computer is a desktop with external monitor, right? As far as I know, you cannot control a monitor's backlight through a standard video interface. Laptops can use /sys/class/backlight because they have a direct connection to the backlight hardware. If the monitor's built in controls do not lower the brightness sufficiently, then there is not much else you can do. There may be software methods to lower the overall brightness (I know nvidia can do this), but that is not the same as lowering the backlight and may hurt the image quality.

• Folio 9470m notebook with two monitors

Hi all,  I want to use my Folio 9740m notebook with 3 independent display (Built-in display and two external monitor HP L1750). I tried to connect direct to notebook and docking station but it's not working. Only two displays are working at same time. Is it possible to use with 3 display (Intel HD graphics 4000 can do that)? Thanks for your help. Greg

I've not been able to get 3 indpendent monitors running either.  I suspect it may have to do with the high resolutions of thw two monitors.  Has anyone tried using lower resolution settings for three monitors (didn't work for me)? On another note, using the single displayport only allows for a "stretched" desktop environment.  In order to get two independent desktops we had to use one monitor on the displayport in the back of the docking station of the 9470m and use the 2nd monitor on the side displayport which is attached to the laptop itself. This allows you to run two indendent desktops on each of the two monitors without having to get that "Daisy chained" effect where your desktop is just stretched (i.e. when you maximize a window it stretches across both monitors).
The Folio only supports Dual Displayport 1.2 technology which only allows the daisy chain monitors and doesn't support multiple independent desktops, thus your only option is to get one big wide desktop if you connect multiple monitors to a single displayport. I'd love to get a solution to allow me to use two monitors plus the built-in display!  Any ideas??

Hi,
Of course you can install a linux distro on it. I can't tell you how easy it will be as it's more related to the actual linux distro. What distribution would you like to use on it?

• Tecra S3 and A2 both with Intel 2200 BG - Poor instable WiFi access

My department is using dozen's of Toshiba notebooks (15+ years).
Latest generations up till the Tecra's S2, all went well using WiFi.
Problems started with the A2. Then the same happened with the S3. Both from day ONE.
Tosbiba NL suggested driver update: no improvement.
Test: 1 Single user - 1 Cisco 1200 AP (802.11b)- No or brief connection (2 minutes) possible.
Most of the time, the AP is not visible at all.
Tried different channels. No difference.
All other Toshiba notebooks with other WiFi adapter models, work well.
Test with a 3Com (802.11b) AP went better, but still a very poor connection/speed.
Test with a Cisco 1230 (802.11g) went better, but still
very poor connection/speed.
Intel suggestions re 2200BG:
Power Save Polling to be the cause. But offer no solution.
Bluetooth co-existance. BT is not installed the A2. BT is not activated on the S3. We don't see the relation here.
There is no influence from other other equipment, operating in the 2.4 GHz range.
Who does experience the same and is there any explanation/solution known?
Regards and thank you,
Bill

Hi Bill
Thanks for your post about your wireless issues observations.
I have read some postings about the strange wireless LAN issues and mostly the WLan driver update procedure have solved the problems.
As far as I know on the Intel website you can find the newest version of WLan BG driver.
I suggest to download it and to reinstall the driver.
