Solaris Environment Manager maxs out memory.

We have a forte system in production, running on two Solaris 2.6 boxes. Each
has its own environment and they are connected. Our environments are called
"Data Center" and "Call Center". Our Forte memory settings are fairly
standard. We start at 20Mb and max out at 64Mb. We also have Forte keepalive
enabled, with the Forte recommended values. We are running Forte 3.0.L.3 and
using Oracle 8.0.5 for our database (as if it mattered). Each environment
has 1 or 2 NT Server boxes in it, and the clients are all NT4 using a model
node. Our Solaris machines have the patch installed that fixes the problem
that Peggy Adrian posted about earlier in the year.
Three times now in the past week, we have suddenly had the environment
manager for the data center suddenly start chewing up memory. When the data
center manager gets to about 64Mb, the data center environment manager
starts to do the same thing. Soon after, both environments die a hideous
death, and we have go in and start the node managers again.
Please note that we always export our environments to a ".edf" file and
bootstrap the environment manager (removing the environment repository)
whenever we install a new copy of the Forte applications, or whenever our
node manager dies (which seems far more frequent that I would like).
Interestingly, the environment repository hadn't grown any after the
environment manager "runs up the curtain and joins the choir invisibule".
If anyone can throw some light on this, and point us in the direction to
look to solve this problem it would be much appreciated.
Nick.

Hi,
@ Sunny: Thanks for response, the referred note was already checked and parameters are in sync as per note.
@Mohit: SAP wouldn't proceed till create database if Oracle software was not installed. thanks for the response.
@Markus: Thanks I agree with you, but I have doubt in this area. Isn't it like project.max-shm-memory was new parameter we need to set in local zone rather using shmsys:shminfo_shmmax in /etc/system. Do we need to still maintain this parameter in /etc/system in global zone.
As per SUN doc below parameter was obsolete from Solaris 10.
The following parameters are obsolete.
■ shmsys:shminfo_shmmni
■ shmsys:shminfo_shmmax
As per your suggestion, do we need to set below parameters in that case, please clarify.
Parameter                           Replaced by Resource Control      Recommended Value
semsys:seminfo_semmni   project.max-sem-ids                      100
semsys:seminfo_semmsl   process.max-sem-nsems               256
shmsys:shminfo_shmmax  project.max-shm-memory             4294967295
shmsys:shminfo_shmmni   project.max-shm-ids                       100
Also   findings of /etc/release
more /etc/release

  • Indesign CC freezes and maxes out memory usage in Windows 7

    I'm having a problem where Indesign will freeze and when I check on it in Task Manager I can see the memory usage climbing until it's using all free memory. I have to kill the task to get it to stop. I have 8GB and it maxed out at 6.5gb this morning. I'm on Windows 7 Pro and am using the 64-bit version of Indesign with the most recent update.

    The document I'm working on now is only about 35 pages with 1-3 images per page, nothing too crazy. I don't have any extra plugins from what I recall - how do I check?
    I'm using Photoshop and sometimes Illustrator at the same time, but have plenty of free memory until ID goes nuts.

  • 2 days trying and my MBP still crashes, due to maxed out memory. Can someone suggest any other solutions?

    Problem description:
    About 3 minutes after I start up, without me opening any applications aprt from activity monitor, the memory pressure graph turns red, kernel_task goes up to 5-6GB, then I have 2-3 mdworker pricess at about 500MB with the total memory at 7.8-8GB. The MAC becomes less responsive and after a while it freezes, I can only use the power button to re-boot it.
    In safe mode i don;t have these memory issues (kernel_task at 550MB and no mdworker process running). Strangely Firefox works well but Safari and Chrome have issue (mainly with fonts but also, some links are not clickable)
    First Encounter:
    The first time I epxerienced a freeze was when I deleted a timemachine backup and let it overnight to do a new one from scratch- Mac was frozen in the morning. Then worked well during the day (and I think i updated various software but not sure which) and i tried to do another one after full backup in the evening after disabling Power Nap and put hard drives to sleep in Energy Settings (which I thought had caused the crash). It crashed again in the morning but it also started having the memory issues desribed above.
    [I downloaded Macupdate desktop last week and found various 3rd apart software that where not up to date. I have since used that to update them and I suspect that it may have updated something that is not maverics compatible but this is just a guess of what may have cause this. ]
    What I have done to resolve:
    I have deleted all software I thought could be causing the issue and I have re-installed maverircs twice (from the cmd+R menu not full format and  instalation).
    I also installed the latest version of dropbox, flash while I have deleted applications such us hidden, little snitch, team viewer, oaragon NTFS, MacUpdate, Citrix). Also stoped Skype, deamonmanager and crashplan to lauch at starup leaving only dropbox and google drive).
    Any ideas would be much appreciated.

    I'll start by saying a big thanks to Allan and Erich. Your promt responses made me hopeful that there is someone else out there who is listening and that if I get more data someone will figure it out. So I have spend many more hours, trying to get you more data which by luck led me to the solution. So thank you both!
    Here's the full answer:
    I thought I had uninstalled avast and thanks that you pointed out that it still wasn't. Althought I had figured out i was supposed to delete stuff under /library/ and system/library I had not realised that there was one more library inside user which was hidden. Your Avast comment make me find that library too and I deleted a bunch of applications.
    No back to the probem which may have been solved, but it has only been stable for 10min. [i'll write everything down in case it helps others]
    I realised that before Kernel_task a couple of mdworker processes popped up first each using about 1.5GB of memory and then kernel_task took over the majority of memory (with the mdworkers multiplying and each having about 500MB). I realised that I could click the info button in activity monitor for the mdworker, and it had a "open files and ports" section. I copy pasted than and got the below text

    This end bit has something to do with mail and it's synching to gmail. So I opened mail and deleted all the mail accounts. (I have 2 gmails and a yahoo). That did not at first solve the problem so I went in and tried to create an icloud mail account but this kept crashing mail. So then I just re-entered the info for one of the gmail accounts which it accepted whithout crashing. Shortly after the memory was down and now 10mins later things look normal and mail continues to sync with gmail.
    I hope this is the end of it, but i'll keep you posted if it isn't...

  • [Solved] Date command not working, maxing out memory and cpu.

    So I've encountered and incredibly strange problem.
    Today, I was working on a script for my bar panel. I was following z3bra's guide "Meeting at The Bar Really simple stuff, nothing harmful:
    #! /bin/sh
    # Fox - do whatever
    # Gathers various info to be displayed on a panel using BAR
    clock () {
    date '+%a %y/%m/%d %I:%M'
    volume () {
    sed -n 's/^.*\[\([0-9]\+\)%.*$/\1%/p'
    cpuload () {
    mpstat 1 1 | awk '$3 ~ /CPU/ { for(i=1;i<=NF;i++) { if ($i ~ /%idle/) field=i } } $3 ~ /all/ { print 100 - $field }'
    memused() {
    read t f <<< `grep -E 'Mem(Total|Free)' /proc/meminfo |awk '{print $2}'`
    bc <<< "scale=2; 100 - $f / $t * 100" | cut -d. -f1
    network() {
    #The Following assumes you have 3 interfaces: loopback, ethernet, wifi
    read lo int1 int2 <<< `ip link | sed -n 's/^[0-9]: \(.*\):.*$/\1/p'`
    # iwconfig returns an error code if the interface tested has no wireless
    # extensions
    if iwconfig $int1 >/dev/null 2>&1; then
    wifi=$int1
    eth0=$int2
    else
    wifi=$int2
    eth0=$int1
    fi
    # in case you have only one interface, just set it here:
    # int=eth0
    # this line will set the variable $int to $eth0 if it's up, and $wifi
    # otherwise. I assume that if ethernet is UP, then it has priority over
    # wifi. If you have a better idea, please share :)
    ip link show $eth0 | grep 'state UP' >/dev/null && int=$eth0 || int=$wifi
    #This is now the time to see if network is up or not. For that, a simple ping would do the trick:
    # just output the interface name. Could obviously be done in the 'ping'
    # query
    echo -n "$int"
    # Send a single packet, to speed up the test. I use google's DNS 8.8.8.8,
    # but feel free to use any ip address you want. Be sure to put an IP, not a
    # domain name. You'll bypass the DNS resolution that can take some precious
    # miliseconds ;)
    ping -c 1 8.8.8.8 >/dev/null 2>&1 && echo "connected" || echo "disconnected"
    groups() {
    cur=`xprop -root _NET_CURRENT_DESKTOP | awk '{print $3+1}'`
    tot=`xprop -root _NET_NUMBER_OF_DESKTOPS | awk '{print $3}'`
    # Desktop numbers start at 0. if you want desktop 2 to be in second place,
    # start counting from 1 instead of 0. But wou'll lose a group
    for w in `seq 1 $((cur - 1))`; do line="${line}="; done
    # enough =, let's print the current desktop
    line="${line}|"
    # En then the other groups
    for w in `seq $((cur + 2)) $tot`; do line="${line}="; done
    # don't forget to print that line!
    if (($cur < "10"))
    then echo $line=
    else echo $line
    fi
    nowplaying() {
    cur=`mpc current`
    test -n "$cur" && echo $cur || echo "- stopped -"
    # This loop will fill a buffer with our infos, and output it to stdout.
    while :; do
    buf=""
    buf="${buf} [$(groups)] -- "
    buf="${buf} CLK: $(clock) -"
    buf="${buf} NET: $(network) -"
    buf="${buf} CPU: $(cpuload)%% -"
    buf="${buf} RAM: $(memused)%% -"
    buf="${buf} VOL: $(volume)%%"
    buf="${buf} MPD: $(nowplaying)"
    echo $buf
    # use `nowplaying scroll` to get a scrolling output!
    sleep 1 # The HUD will be updated every second
    done
    Once I finished it up, I ran it, and nothing happened. So I took a break, and then came back to troubleshoot it. I ran
    bash -x panel.sh
    and didn't see anything weird so I started to just run each command and make sure my syntax was alright. However, right away when I ran date, no output was generated and within seconds my computer came to a crawl, so I rebooted manually.
    Now, whenever I simply run (without any parameters)
    date
    the exact same thing happens and within seconds htop reports 100% memory usage and nearly 100% CPU usage on all four cores. Luckily, if I'm fast enough, ctrl-c still ends the operation of date.
    I've tried reinstalling coreutils,but that doesn't seem to fix the problem and I can't completely remove it first since a lot of things depend on it.. I have no clue how to even start fixing this. Anyone have an idea?
    Realized where I went stupid, in my ~/Scripts folder, I made a script named date without remember that I had recently added that folder to my PATH. So I created a recursive loop that within seconds would crash my computer... oops.

    I have found the solution! I post how I managed in case someone else has the same issue.
    You have to go to "Settings" -> "Settings Editor".
    There, there is a "display" entry.
    When you open the tree, you can see both of your displays (in my case, LVDS1 and VGA1).
    Under VGA1 (the "extra" monitor), there is a "Position" entry. There, you need to set the "X" variable to the last pixel of the other display resolution.
    E.g.: if you principal display is a "1366x768", then the "X" value will be 1366.
    You can also play on the "Y" if your screens are not horizontally aligned, but 0 should be fine.
    I hope this helps :-)

  • Dot patterns maxes out memory?

    I am need of some help...I have to create a rather large dot pattern...image size 53.88"w x 49.81"h...I have my dot sizes and spacing figured out, but when I step and repeat them, it really bogs down my machine, and eventually gives me an error stating that I am out of memory, and it won't let me go any further.
    I can really use some help on this...maybe I am not using the right program...that doesn't matter to me, I just need to make to pattern work.  I have Design Premium CS5, so if I need to use a different program, I can.
    Please Help!!!

    Rather than creating a vector path for each dot, create a repeating tile pattern.
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Illustrator/14.0/WS714a382cdf7d304e7e07d0100196cbc5f-64d3a.htm l
    In step 8 you create you bounding box, I suggest you create one to a specific size (eg: 1" x 1"), then use that value to when moving objects, so that they will register for example on the left and right edge of the tile.

    Hi,
    @ Sunny: Thanks for response, the referred note was already checked and parameters are in sync as per note.
    As per your suggestion, do we need to set below parameters in that case, please clarify.

    semsys:seminfo_semmni   project.max-sem-ids                      100

  • Memory maxed out when running weblogic 4.5

    I am the tech support guy for my office, but I am WebLogic illiterate. I have a user who is running WebLogic, but when he runs it, his RAM and virtual memory max out. Are there any settings in WebLogic for memory allocation? Or is there a known problem with memory?

    Please see my reply in misc.

    Hi.
    I am running WebLogic 4.5.1.5 under Solaris 2.6. I am using JDK 1.2.2
    with HotSpot. When we shutdown our server, it essentially crashes with
    the following error:
    # HotSpot Virtual Machine Error, Unexpected Signal 11
    # Error happened during: mark sweep
    # Error ID: 4F533F534F4C415249530E4350500BC2 01
    After looking into the problem, we found that it is easily recreatable,
    simply
    by (1) starting the server, (2) hitting any web page (which causes
    FileServlet
    to be loaded), and (3) shutting down the server.
    I have attached a tail of my log file as evidence.
    Anybody else seen this problem? Is it a Weblogic/HotSpot compatibility
    problem?
    Thanks.

  • How do I get my iTunes (both purchased and cd's) into the cloud as I cannot use match my iMac and MacBook are too old to use the right OS and maxed out RAM memory upgrades, but have iPhone 4S and now 64gb iPad and libraries on desktops plus iPod!!

    So very excited bought iPad and new speakers today! Want to get all my music sorted as across iMac (G5), MacBook os 10.6 (maxed out ram and memory) and old iPod. Saw Match would be an option but can't use due to old OS so I can get the raw music library files but then what do I do to get all in one place? Any help appreciated.

    A good route would be to attach a USB drive to the macbook.  You can use the drive to assemble a copy of all of your music from your various devices.  iTunes on the macbook can be used to create a new library, located on the USB drive, into which you can import all of your music.
    Two major benefits:
    1.  From here you can run iTunes Match across your entire music collection; and
    2.  You will have created a full local backup of all of your music on the USB drive.
    Once complete you will be able to access the music from any iDevice capable of running iTunes Match,  Do remember as you add music it is important to maintain a local backup in order to keep your music safe.

  • Why does my memory max out at 70% (using iStat) @ 2x1GB RAM 667mhz

    Hi,
    I'm using iStat as a monitoring service and I have 2x1gb RAM installed and a 2.4 core2duo processor. I run multiple programs at once (Firefox, Dropbox, MS Office, iTunes) and my memory hovers around 71% all the time (it gets sluggish around 70%). It never has gone up or past 74%. I figure it should max out around 100% right? I recently upgraded to 2x2gb or 667 memory. Will I still have the same problem of hitting a threshold? How do I get rid of this ceiling? Thanks!

    Hi bmose14,
    I'm not entirely sure how iStat Pro monitors RAM (I always use Activity Monitor for that) but I know Snow Leopard changed how RAM is monitored. Previously in Leopard if you had, for example, 2GB of total RAM it would show that as available and then just immediately allocate the RAM that's being addressed by the GPU. But in Snow Leopard, I find that I have 1.75GB of total RAM (as it doesn't calculate the 256MB of VRAM my shared GPU is allocated).
    I'm thinking you have the Intel GMA X3100 GPU (144MB of RAM) and as such that's being calculated here, in addition to the RAM being used by the programs and OS. With that being said, I don't think you can ever reach the 100% mark. I know I fired up iStat Pro on my machine (prior to responding) and I'm also hovering around ~80% despite Activity Monitor showing about the same as "green" in the pie chart.

  • Max-shm-memory (Solaris 11.1)

    I wonder if someone can give a definitive answer on this, or point me to somewhere that does?
    If I have a 64GB RAM server running Solaris 11.1 that will run a single Oracle instance, what is the correct setting to make for max-shm-memory?
    Should it be 64GB, or something a bit smaller? Or something a lot smaller?
    I have read the installation documentation, but it gives examples of 2gb, 4gb and so on. They don't seem relevant to a 64GB+ server

    Thank you, but that document doesn't answer my questions.
    Specifically, it states at one point that "project.max-shm-memory=(privileged,51539607552,deny); ... sets a limit of 48GB per shared memory segment" (which is true, as far as I understand it). But it then goes on to say in the next breath that "The project.max-shm-memory limit is the __total__ shared memory size for your project. -- ie maximum total of all your segments.". Which, to my mind, contradicts its first statement.
    The article then also goes on to give an example where "This system has 8GB of memory..." and shows the author setting "projmod -s -K "project.max-shm-memory=(privileged,4GB,deny)" 'user.oracle'"... so are we to deduce that you should set max-shm-memory to 50% of your physically-available RAM? Or not??
    I had actually read this before I posted. It's the same sort of document I see over and over on this subject: lots of examples, some contradictory, but none stating what principles should govern the setting of max-shm-memory, and none stating what the consequences of (for example) allocating 100% of physically available RAM as max-shm-memory would be.
    So thank you for the reference, but my question still stands: can someone provide a definitive answer on what the setting here should be? It's a 64GB server and will run nothing but Oracle database, with a single instance. max-shm-memory should be set to.... what, exactly?

  • Impact of project.max-shm-memory configuration in Solaris 10

    Dear All,
    I'm not sure if this an error or purposely configured as it is.
    Current kernel configuration of project.max-shm-memory is *400Gb* while the hardware only have 8 GB RAM, and SGA_max set to 5GB (ORACLE database is 10g).
    Will there be any impact in long run with this configuration based on your experiences?
    project: 1: user.root
    NAME PRIVILEGE VALUE FLAG ACTION RECIPIENT
    project.max-shm-memory
    privileged *400GB* - deny -
    system 16.0EB max deny -
    Suggestions and advices are much appreciated.
    Thanks and Best Regards,
    Eric Purwoko

    Hi Helios,
    Thanks!, the recommendation is 4294967295, but my SGA MAX and target is 5 GB. Will it cause problem if I put project.max-shm-memory lower than SGA?
    Thanks for the link too. I guess I better put those configuration in /etc/system too.
    But now wondering what's the best value looking at my SGA max configuraiton
    Best Regards,
    Eric

    I don't find a way to disable the global flags.
    Can anyone tell me:
    how to disable global flags?
    how to disable and enable solaris resource management all together?

    Hi there, i'm using solaris resource management in a
    server with more thant 2thousand acounts.
    Created profiles for users, defaul, staff, root and
    services.Seeing the contents of your /etc/project file could be helpful.
    But while using rctladm to enable syslog'ing, I set up
    global flags of "deny" and "no-local-action" in almos
    everything.The flags on the right hand side of the rctladm(1M) output are read-only:
    they are telling you the characteristics of the resource control in question (what
    operations the system will allow the resource control to take).
    Now, many aplications don't work because they are
    denied enough process.max-stack-size and
    process.max-file-descriptor for them to work.
    Applications such has prstat.If prstat(1) is failing due to the process.max-file-descriptor control value, that's
    probably a bug. prstat(1) is more likely bumping into the limit to assess how many file
    descriptors are available, and then carrying on--you're just seeing a log message since
    prstat(1) tested the file descriptor limit, and you've enabled syslog for that control. Please
    post the prstat(1) output, and we'll figure out if something's breaking.
    I don't find a way to disable the global flags. You can't. I would disable the syslog action on the process.max-stack-size control first;
    there is an outstanding bug on this control, in that it will report a false triggering event--
    no actual effect to the process. (If you send me some mail, I will add you as a call record
    on the bug.)
    Can anyone tell me:
    how to disable global flags?
    how to disable and enable solaris resource management
    all together?You could raise all of the control values, but the resource control facility (like the resource
    limit facility it superseded) is always active. Let's figure out if you're hitting the bug I mentioned,
    and then figure out how to proceed.
