Solaris express first impressions

Downloaded solaris express on 10/DEC/05 burned to 4 cd's. Did a complete OEM install
Installed 3 times, once with a xircom, 3com and netgear pcmcia cards, no detection of the nics however the pcic slots are detected and show in prtconf -D | grep pcic. Not good
Big show stopper, will not detect the PNY or any other usb memory card the way Solaris 10 picked it up as soon as it was plugged in. Very not good, no way to transfer new drivers w/o burning them to a cd...
It also did not detect the USB mouse the way solaris 10 did both during install and after install.
This is on a Sony VAIO PCG-F480. This seems to be a step backwards where before the only issues were the nic's which I never did get to work and is why I tried the express version.
It did however get the LCD, onboard mouse pad correct which solaris10 also did.

Apparently the nfs client module is need for some reason I don't understand (I'm doing a local CD install). Since I installed the SUNWCrnet cluster this kernel module didn't install.
I resolved this by manually installing the SUNWnfsckr from failsafe mode..

  • Solaris Express, Dev. Edition 2/07 install problem

Im trying to install the solaris express developer edition 2/07 dvd i got in the mail.
Everything goes fine until i have to set up the hard drive for installation. I have two hard drives, 1 SATA (Server 2003), and a 20Gb IDE for this Solaris install.
When i click next to start installing, it drops out with an error against Solaris Software. the error is as follows:
ERROR: Could not create Fdisk partition table.
    ERROR: Could not label disks
ERROR: Could not update disks with new configuration
    ERROR: System installation failed
Pfinstall failed. Exit stat = java.lang.UNIXProcess@2af0812

Im not a nub to linux but i have never used solaris and its been a few years since i've touched it - but im familiar with console.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. =D

You do not supply more comprehensive info on Your hardware. Therefore I would like to suggest quite conservative approach.
    1. First of all it will be helpful to get from SUN's website the "Install check tool". It is an image (bootable CD) of diagnostic soft.
    2. Disable in Bios the SATA disk.
    3. Boot the computer with "Install_check_tool" CD inserted into the drive. I hope that this diagnostics will be OK.
    4. Restart the computer and start Solaris installation. You can perform this step directly after step no. 2. Now Bios will see only IDE disc and installation should proceed OK. If not - supply more info on Your hardware and resulting (in this situation) diagnostics.
    Good luck!

  • Solaris Express installation experience

    Hi folk,
I want to add to my previous post about not getting the graphical installer to work at all due to the notorious
    nVidia bug in Xorg.
I have now tried the console install thats supplied as a backup method in Express.
I got through all the sections, installed everything and then got an error that it could not install
the boot blocks, and attempting to boot gives a Bad PBR error.
My first attempt at installing in this manner was to have a drive split between Windows and Solaris, and with this error, I thought.. OK, I'll dedicate the entire drive to Solaris and try installing again.. this i did, but the same error
    continued to haunt me.
No matter what I did, it cannot install to the boot block and thus renders Solaris Express useless to me.

  • Solaris Express Developer x86 -- only 64-bit?

Hi, people, glad to be back. Just downloaded Solaris Express Developer edition x86 and installed -- almost with no problems.
It's a system with Intel Celeron D with 64-bit and Hyper Threading support, DDR2 1Gb.
    Now running Solaris I noticed it's a 64-bit version, not 32-bit, as I meant to have. The command `isainfo -n` gives back ... "amd64"!
Is there a 32-bit version of Solaris Express DE x86?
Or maybe I need not worry at all and keep running the 64-bit one (actually, I've got no problem as yet)?
Thanks in advance for any comments.

So, my system supports 64-bit computing after all. I
never thought about it, in fact.
But does it mean Solaris Express DE x86 runs as
64-bit on the systems supporting 64-bit, and as
32-bit on 32-bit-only systems?Yes, that's correct. Solaris 10 was the first version of Solaris to support 64 bit operation on the x86 architecture.
It and later versions (including Solaris Express DE x86) should automatically detect the architecture and run in that mode at boot time. There are some ways to force it to run in 32 bit mode only if necessary, but that would be unusual.

    Hi,
Help me in installing Solaris Express, Developer Edition
When i am trying to install Solaris, system hangs and the moniter is switcher off when the system goes in GUI mode.
i have intel 945GTP mother board with as on board Intel Graphics Media Accelerator Drives , Chipset -> Intle 945G , 160 SATA Hard Disk, 1 GB DDR2 Ram , P4 3.Ghz Processer , on board Intel PRO/100 VE Network Card.

    Hello,
first of all: Try to run the HCTS (Hardware
Compatibility Test Suite) first, it's available
    here:
    http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/hcts/device_detect.htm
    l
This you can run from Windows, and it will list all
hardware that has drivers, and all those, that do not
have drivers (including some public domain drivers).
After that, you have the possibility to install
Solaris WITHOUT a GUI, use one of the two "terminal"
modes. The first Is still a GUI, as it only starts X
and opens a terminal, in which then the installer
runs. The second does NOT start X, but runs the
installer on the console. Try this one, and once you
get through that, you can afterwards figure out the
    settings of the Xserver.Hi ,
i have installed the solaris using console.
Still GUI is not starting, the moniter is switched off when GUI gets started
I used Hardware Compatibility Test Suite, its say that system is supported
    by Solaris.
Should i have change BIOS setting to stated the system

  • Solaris Express Site?

What's with Sun's Solaris Express download site? It's been down for "maintenance" for the last three days.

I was able to get networking to partially work with a similar setup, no DNS yet.
VMWare configured for Bridged, VMWare Tools installed. Mistake I made was booting the first time without checking that VMWare was set to Bridged and not NAT.
ifconfig -a plumbfound a pcn0 device and then
    ifconfig pcn0 up
ifconfig pcn0 dhcpGot an IP address.
I can now SSH to my linux host from Solaris but no DNS and the gnome network administration tool keeps having a problem with the "backend script" it is trying to run. Back to Solaris 10 reference book I go.

  • Solaris Express Developer Ed. 5/07 boot crashes

    * Crash 1:
I successfully installed Solaris Express Developer Ed. 5/07 on a Dell Inspiron 510m laptop, but after rebooting and selecting Solaris Express from the grub boot menu, the screen gets filled with:
    Nested trap, calling reset()
    Nested trap, calling reset()
    .. and the computer reboots.
    * Crash 2:
I also successfully installed Solaris Express Developer Ed. 5/07 on a AMD64 3200+, Gigabyte GA-K8N-SLI, but after rebooting and selecting Solaris Express from the grub boot menu, a message like this is shown (for a split second before restarting) if I boot into 32-bit mode or "failsafe mode":
module "ehci" something something, "NULL dereference" something.
If I boot into (default) 64-bit mode, there is another type of crash output that is not possible to read. Looks like some kind of kernel panic.
The only way I get Solaris Express working is by installing it in VMWare, but that is too slow on those two computers.
What to do? Is there anything I could try except running in 32-bit mode?

but installing linux on my computer with two sata
disk teached me to ask carefully from experienced
people before going to insall the OS.
    I have
    hda1 windows
    hdb4 linux ext3
    hdb3 linux swap
    hdb5 solaris partition (i think)
i'm not sure you can install solaris partition on extended partition?!
usually, we install solaris on a primary partition, and if the first partition of the extended one is FAT32, solaris can mount it
What i am looking to know is, whether any one shared
idea dn experience and screenshot about developing
java applications in solaris.search on netbeans site, there are many screenshots
Also I can not find whether SxDE has Sun N1 grid with
    itself or not.
i don't understand what relation you see between java developpment and N1 grid? N1 grid is to deploy apps and/or OS on many machines, isn't it? but i think you can download it on sun site.

  • Solaris 10 JumpStart server doesn't works correctly with Solaris Express

    Hi All,
I have configured the JumpStart server on Solaris 10.
I install Solaris 10 and Solaris 9 also using flash installation.
When I run installation installer ask me 2 or 3 questions (I don't exactly remember) about NFS and then it install automatically.
Does anybody know how to avoid these few questions at the beginning of installation?
    Thanks,
    Daniel

    The first question is:
     The Solaris Installation Program
The Solaris installation program is divided into a series of short sections
where you'll be prompted to provide information for the installation. At
the end of each section, you'll be able to change the selections you've
    made before continuing.
    About navigation...
    - The mouse cannot be used
    - If your keyboard does not have function keys, or they do not
respond, press ESC; the legend at the bottom of the screen
will change to show the ESC keys to use for navigation.

    F2_Continue F6_Help
    Then I select to Continue:
     Identify This System
On the next screens, you must identify this system as networked or
non-networked, and set the default time zone and date/time.
If this system is networked, the software will try to find the information
it needs to identify your system; you will be prompted to supply any
    information it cannot find.
    > To begin identifying this system, press F2.

    Esc-2_Continue Esc-6_Help
    Then I select to continue:
     NFSv4 Domain Name
NFS version 4 uses a domain name that is automatically derived from the system's naming services. The derived domain name is sufficient for most configurations. In a few cases, mounts that cross domain boundaries might cause files to appear to be owned by "nobody" due to the lack of a common domain name.
The current NFSv4 default domain is: ""
    NFSv4 Domain Configuration
[X] Use the NFSv4 domain derived by the system
    [ ] Specify a different NFSv4 domain

    Esc-2_Continue Esc-6_Help
    I select continue:
     Confirm Information for NFSv4 Domain
    > Confirm the following information. If it is correct, press F2;
to change any information, press F4.
NFSv4 Domain Name: << Value to be derived dynamically >>

    Esc-2_Continue Esc-4_Change Esc-6_Help
Again I select continue and then the Solaris Express installs automatically.

  • USB ADSL Modem Driver for Huawei MT841 for Solaris Express

    Hello Everyone
After initial hiccups of installing Solaris Express in a multiboot system and partition mania,i finally installed Solaris Express on my system.First i installed Developer Edition and upgraded it to Express thinking that Developer Edition doesnt have networking capabilities.
All said and done now i'm unable to access the internet.I'm using Broadband USB ADSL Modem from Huawei, type MT841 with four ethernet ports and one USB port.I dont have ethernet card so i use USB port to connect.
The thing is the modem cd doesnt have a driver for Solaris, but for linux it does.
Where can i find the driver for ADSL modem and how to install it,if i find it?
Is there any alternate way?Expecting a reply(because my last post about multiboot didnt)
    Thanks in advance
    C.S.Shreeram

    Problem Solved!
Un-installing all USB modem device drivers, disconnecting all USB devices and removing all USB host controllers and hubs from the Vista device manager and then rebooting the notebook MADE NO DIFFERENCE.
However when I received the new Thomson SpeedTouch 330 USB ADSL modem drivers on CD-ROM from the manufacturer the modem installed immediately.
I can only assume that there is a problem with the download of Release 4.1 of the Windows Vista driver for the SpeedTouch 330 from this web-page:
    http://www.thomson-broadband.co.uk/codepages/content3.asp?c=7&ProductID=471
... as the drivers on the CD-ROM from Thomson work - but their web download of the driver for the SpeedTouch does not.
The problem was with the driver for Windows Vista - the laptop and modem now work correctly - as they should have done at the first installation attempt!
    Thanks for your help.

  • PDA Host USB (Solar Express CF Card)

Am not sure of interest.  But I've tried the new Solar Express Compact Flash USB host card (currently in an IPAQ 210 PDA, running WinMobile 6).
This worked like a charm with LabView PDA DAQbase sample code and the NI USB-6009.
I really bought this for use in a non-hosting USB-PDA, and will try in a Axim X50v.
For the record the IPAQ 210 has USB Host functionality built-in, but initially proper cables were not available, these are now currently available and the USB-6009 does work with them.  Unfortuneately, I could only get to work if the cables route thru a mini-USB hub first.  This is not necessary with the CF card.
In both the CF and the IPAQ native USB hosting mode, no additional power is needed to run the 6009, though I've yet to check battery consumption.  The Solar Express card comes with a USB cable Y-joint which allows feeding additional power to the accessory on USB.  The CF card itself, I believe, is limited to 200 mA draw.
See below links for the Solar Express product.
    http://www.twin-paradox.com/SEPDA.html
    http://www.lightconecorp.net/blog/
I think this works well for the $85 price.  And appears to work with many older PDAs, which is good for hobbyists, and those like me, with old unused ones lying around.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I bought the Solar Express card, but am having some problems getting data.  I notice you are using a 6009, and I am using a 6008.  The 6008 is not specifically listed in the table here, so I wonder if it can be used.  I have everything set up as per the dynamic example in the same link, but when I run my program on the PDA and set the Physical Channels contol to my task I get the following error: "Value passed to the Task/Channel In control is invalid.  Error code: -200428".  I unsuccessfully searched for the error code.  I am just trying to read some AI, nothing fancy.  I have set up the task in the NI-DAQmx Base Task Configuration Utility, but it seems like it is having a problem with that.  Also, I have the code inside an Event structure, but I can't see why that would make a difference.  Attached is my code.  Are you doing anything differently (other than using the 6009)?

    1. When access some pages, Safari randomly crashes. Ordinary pages such as this website itself. The symtom is both CPU core work reach 100% and needed to restart computer.
    2. Randomly show message like "file not found, need reinstall." in any page, of course, even this page.
    Bugs:
    1. Cannot click on the button on the taskbar to minimize.

I love to test beta software and report bugs. I'm not a techical geeks so my testing method is to use them just as I always use in everyday life. No tweak or special use I squeesh to the program. I understand the BETA is not FINAL and of course, have more bugs than FINAL.
But this is not what I call bugs. I call "cannot be used."
How can you guy call this "PUBLIC" Beta? Have your programmer even see it in action in Windows before release to public?
This application is the second Apple application I experienced. (The first is iTunes.) It totally let me down because when compare with Internet Explorer 7 Beta 1 I tested last year, Safari 3.0 Public Beta is not in my sight.
How can you apply guy convince me that Apple is better than Microsoft since I compare just an essential small program and found no pros, even both are in beta state?
Hope to see Beta 2 with no major crash in the first 5 minuites usage.

Downgrading via Archive and install is notoriously unreliable. It is much safer to simply retrieve your backup you made before you installed the update after an erase and install. Of course you make at least two backups. Selective file recovery may be in order, such as found in migrating from PowerPC to Intel Macs:
