Solaris File System/ Virtual File system Documentation

can anybody help me in finding solaris virtual file system documentaion/books ?
thanks in advance,
-mayur

AFAIK, the VFS is not an official (and documented) interface
and may change from solaris release to solaris release
(perhaps even with a new kernel patch).
Other, you can probably get the Solaris 8 Foundation Source,
and use it as the definitive reference documentation ;-)

  • Solaris File System/Device Management Information

    Hi All,
I a writing a paper about the Solaris operating system and require information about the file system and device management of Solaris 8.
    File Management:
I am looking for information or links to sites that would help me find more information about the solaris file system architecture, how it uses drive space, and some of the features of the Solaris file system
    Device Management:
I am also looking for information or website links that cover how Solaris talks to devices (overview) and other device management architecture information.
    any help is appreciated!

Don't use cp because it converts soft links into hard files. Its even worse when you have cyclic soft links. Use tar or cpio and you should be ok.
i.e. If you have a soft link to a file of 10G, a cp will result in 20G.

  • Ldap client with directory server 6.0 on solaris 9 systems

I have a directory server 6.0 running on a solaris 9 system. I have set up idsconfig, vlvindex and certificate database on the server side. The client ldap I am trying to set up is also solaris 9 system. I have set the certificate database on this ldap client using the Resource Kit certutil and import the server certificate to client certificate database. It seems the TLS secure connection did work between LDAP server and client. (I use the Resource Kit ldapsearch command to test it) I use 'ldapclient -v init ...' command using 'profileName=tlsprofile' to initialize the LDAP client and the information returned from that command said LDAP client configed sucsessfully. But when I run ldapaddent command to import /etc/passwd. I got error:
    Passwd container does not exist.
The ldapaddent command I ran like this:
    ldapaddent -v -f <passwd file> -D "cn=Directory Manager" passwd
Then I tried to use 'ldapclient -v manual ....' command to set up LDAP client. That command finishes succefully. But I still can not import /etc/passwd using ldapaddent with same error.
What is wrong with my set-up?
    Thanks,

I looked into the /var/adm/messages, and I have the following error:
ldap_cachemgr[1640]: [ID 605618 daemon.error] libldap: CERT_VerifyCertName: cert server name 'directory server' does not match 'hostname.mycompany.com': SSL connection denied
It seems I have problem with SSL certificate set-up. I did generate the server side 'hostname.mycompany.com' certificate then use the Resource Kit certutil import that certificate to the client side. Is that right way to do?

  • Can Solaris Os System  use as a server edition

Hai guys i am new to solaris system, and my company selected solaris system as our server edition....
Can any one enplane me the solaris OS system could we use as a server edition ?

You could run a Mac Pro using OS X Server. This would allow you to provided services to your small office network, and still use the Mac Pro as your desktop machine.
However, depending on what you are actually intending to use the server for, you may be better off with an older Mac to use for your server. Simple AFP and Windows file services are easily handled by just about any Mac, with the older Quicksilvers through the G5's being good choices for use as servers.
Having a dedicated server, instead of one sharing use as a desktop, means a more stable server for everyone else to use. It also will allow for a more consistent backup and archiving, then a dual role machine will usually be used for.
However, if you do not have the funds to repurpose an older machine, or buy a new machine for your server, then sharing a desktop with a small office group is indeed doable.
As for running Autocad and the server os at the same time, the answer is probably no. The reason is the bootcamp based Windows XP is a one or the other proposition, you are either running WIndows XP or OS X but not both.
On the other hand, if you use virtualization software, such as Parallel you can run both OS X and XP at the same time, however, current released versions of Parallel have limited graphic acceleration and 3D support. Newer beta versions of Parallel are starting to include better graphics support, including 3D. So the question is if AutoCad will run reasonably well under Parallel or not. I think the answer will depend on how you use AutoCad. If you use it mostly for 2D drawings, then it will probably run fine. If you use 3D rendering, you may need, at least for the time being, need to use Bootcamp to run Windows XP natively and get full graphics support.

  • IWorks File Format Documentation?

I've been hunting around the iWorks resources section (http://www.apple.com/iwork/resources/), but I can't seem to find any details anywhere on documenting the iWorks file formats. Does anyone know where I can find this?
(I'm trying to write something to read iWorks 09 files, such as pages and numbers, without needing a copy of iWorks. For the other Office file formats, such as ODF/ODP, DOC/XLS/PPT and DOCX/XLSX/PPTX, you can get file format documentation which defines what that file structure is like, what individual parts and elements mean, what are allowed values and structures etc. I'm after something similar for the iWorks family of formats, but I've thus far been unable to track it down)

Today's fun challenge was detecting password protected files - they seem to use some entirely non-standard encryption at the zip file level.
    (1) I repeat that there is no iWorks product !
    (2) I repeat that it's very rare to get format specs from Apple.
AppleWorks files formats were never published. As far as I know, iWork ones which are modified by every major update were never published too.
    (3) Encrypting with a non-standard scheme may be a good way to protect confidentiality. Isn't it ?

  • Patch Solaris 8 systems

    Hi
Is there anyone that has successfully been able to patch Solaris 8 systems using this tool? If you have a guide I would be happy. I have tried a couple of times but failed even though I have installed required patches.
    Regards Jerry

Does anything show up in the agent logs directory? You may have missing packages, such as SUNWbash, SUNWswmt, and SUNWgzip which are often missing on Solaris 8 systems.
If you are unable to find anything in the logs then I would advise opening a support case. Note that it is likely that we will ask you to collect information from the system using the [GDD script|http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/scripts/sunScripts/SUN-GDD_sun-connection-collect_noarch.tar.gz] . It would be worthwhile if you could collect the information whilst attempting to run a job against the system.
Run the script on the agent:
    # ./SUN-GDD_SunConnection.sh -debugAgent -auto 1800 -o /var/tmpThis will enable debug-level logging on the agent and automatically collect the logs after 30 minutes - you may wish to adjust the time to suit.

  • Next release of Solaris operating system, any given date or estimation?

    Hi
Thank you for reading my post
Is there any given date or estimation about next release of:
    -Solaris Operating system
    -Solaris express
    -Solaris express developer edition
    Thanks

Solaris express/ sxde are on a 3 month release cycle. The last release
was sx 5/07, so any day now.
In theory, I believe that solaris 10 was supposed to be on a 6 monthly release cycle.
The last release was 11/06, so its slipped a little.
I believe the next release of S10 will be S10 8/07.
The releases often make it to the public in the month after their notional release date.
So I would expect them both sometime in the next month or so.

  • How to install SUNWi1cs in Solaris 10 under Virtual Box

Hallo!I am a total newbie in Solaris.
I have installed Solaris 10 (guest OS)via Virtual Box in XP (host OS).I would like to install Oracle 10g in Solaris 10 but prerequisite s/w like SUNWi1cs and SUNWi15cs aren’t installed.
I have been trying to install this through commands such as
    pkgadd –d /cdrom/cdrom0/Solaris_10/Product SUNWi1cs SUNWi15cs
but this directory does not exist.
How would I access this directory ?Will this mean mounting the CD-ROM with a Solaris 10 DVD-R disc or can I access the Solaris 10 virtual box files in the XP path shown below
    C:\Documents and Settings\JOEY\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\CD Burning\SOLARIS_10\PRODUCT
The Oracle 10g for Solaris zipped file is in the XP OS.How do I transfer this file (and any other files in XP)into Solaris 10 to be able to install Oracle 10g in Solaris under Virtualbox?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
If u have installed Solaris operating system on some VMWare by iso file then it will treat iso file as CD. So that following steps will resolve ur issue.
    1. Mount that iso file into /mnt file system.
For example ur iso mounted file system like this:-
    /mnt/cdrom/Solaris_10/Product
    2. Then run this command:-
    pkgadd -d /mnt/Solaris_10/Product SUNWi1cs SUNWi512
It will ask would to like to add these then type Y
    3. Successful installed package message will displayed.
It is the right way to add package from source

Thanks in Advance for your help..

You must have a lot of small files on the file system.
There are couple of ways, the simplest is to increase the size of the filesystem.
Or if you can create a new filesystem, but increase the inode count so you can utilize the space and still have enough inodes. Check out the man page mkfs_ufs and the option nbpi=n

  • Protect Solaris file system

Can we protect the file system (folder level protection) in Solaris box using access manager?

    patrickez wrote:
If I install Solaris 10 on a x86 platform and add a bunch of drives to it to create a zpool (raidz), how do I protect my root filesystem?Solaris 10 doesn't yet support ZFS for a root filesystem, but it is working in some OpenSolaris distributions.
You could use Sun Volume Manager to create a mirror for your root filesystem.
The files in the ZFS file system are well protected, but what about my operating system files down in the root ufs filesystem? If the root filesystem gets corrupted, do I lose the zfs filesystem too?No. They're separate filesystems.
or can I independantly rebuild the root filesystem and just remount the zfs filesystem? Yes. (Actually, you can import the ZFS pool you created).
Should I install solaris 10 on a mirrored set of drives? If you have one, that would work as well.
Can the root filesystem be zfs too?Not currently in Solaris 10. The initial root support in OpenSolaris will require the root pool be only a single disk or mirrors. No striping, no raidz.

  • Solaris file system performance

I run postmark on solaris and ext3 to compare their performance. I found the Solaris is three times slower than ext3. Is there anything wrong? I use "mount" to display all mount point and can see logging is open for the disk I'm testing. I tried closing the logging by "mount -o nologging" and the performance if even worse. So I think the logging is working. But why the performance is still so bad? My computer has 2G ram and the disk I'm using is SATA disk. I found the white paper from SUN says solaris is much faster than ext3 and they use postmark too. Is there any other parameter?

postmark is all about metadata operation performance. Which UFS has always been fairly bad at since solaris is paranoid about flushing metadata and syncing the disks religously to avoid filesystem corruption in case of sudden reboot.
Logging is not primarily a performance optimisation. Its primary function is to avoid having to fsck the disk after an unclean shutdown. So its not surprising that logging doesnt help postmark all that much.
You can try mounting the filesystem noatime which should help a bit.
You can also try ZFS inctead of UFS which supposedly has excellent postmark scores.
You should also be aware that postmark is a very contrived benchmark which only adequately represents the performance of a small subset of programs. Specifically those which manipulate large numbers of small files. Like a mail server.
