Solaris Hangs on Cold Boot

My IDE machine hangs just after Configuration Assistant (Initializing System\Please Wait...) on a cold boot. When I press the reset button it comes up every time. This is a bit concerning - if I have a power outage, my machine won't reboot. Has anyone else had this problem??

  • PB hangs on "cold" boot

Hope someone can help here...Overnight (quite literally) my PB hangs when booting up. The chime sounds and I can hear the CD drive firing up - then nothing but a black screen. The only solution has been to press the reset button at the back where it fires up normally (except for having to reset the date/time). I've tried running disk utility, which says that it's repairing something and after restarting, it works fine. However, if I shut down and then turn the PB later, the hanging problem is back.
I've also formatted the internal HD and reinstalled OSX, but to no avail.
Any ideas anyone? I'm reluctant to spend out on anything until I've got a better idea as to what the problem is!

Stimpy: When you left the PB overnight with the new backup battery in it, was the AC adapter connected and powered up? If not, was the main battery in place and fully charged? Was the PB asleep or completely shut down? In other words, was the new backup battery left holding the fort all by itself overnight?
On the theory that the backup battery was the problem (because the new one seemed to cure it temporarily), I wonder now (a) whether your new BU battery had been fully charged before you left it overnight, and (b) whether it has drained itself since then. If the main battery were in good shape and fully charged when you left the PB for the night, and/or the AC adapter were connected and working normally, the backup battery should not have been drawn down at all, and its depletion could only have been caused by some other hardware malfunction. If you left the main battery out overnight and the AC adapter disconnected, then the BU battery should have been depleted overnight — but why would you have done that? I assume you didn't. Correct?
Remove the main battery, connect the AC adapter, reset the Power Manager, and leave the PB like that for at least five hours to completely recharge the (new) BU battery. Then reinstall the main battery, leave the adapter connected, and charge the main battery up all the way. Leave things like that (with the adapter connected) overnight, and see whether the PB will start normally tomorrow. If it doesn't, there's some problem beyond the BU battery.
In that case, try to test using a different, known-good AC adapter if possible. That will at least eliminate an adapter malfunction as the cause of the trouble. If your problem persists with a known-good adapter and fully-charged main battery and backup battery, you may have to think about replacing the PMU — the only other charging system element that isn't on the main logic board.
I don't know how you feel about spending more money on this TiBook. If even a new PMU doesn't solve the problem, I would seriously consider replacing the Tibook before replacing its logic board, unless a new LB turns up for peanuts.

  • On my PC, iTunes 11.0.3.42 causes it to hang when attempting to view a .MOV (1.6GB) requiring a cold boot. What could be causing this?

On my PC running windows XP Service Pack 3, iTunes 11.0.3.42 causes it to hang when attempting to view a .MOV (1.6 GB) requiring a cold boot. What could be causing this? Corrupted .MOV? Too little RAM? It successfully plays a 162 MB .MOV.

    Hello David,
Thank you for providing all that information about the iTunes issue you are experiencing.  We would first want to rule out any software issues before we can determine if it has to do with RAM.  I found an article that will help you isolate and troubleshoot software issues that could be causing iTunes to behave this way:

I hope this helps you get back on track with watching movies in iTunes!

  • KT4 Ultra Cold Boot Hang.

This has happened several times when I boot my PC from cold start the Bios seems to boot fine then the XP screen comes up, the blue bars scroll and then the screen will go black and the mouse pointer should appear but sometimes the mouse pointer does not appear and I have a blank screen.  If I hit restart the computer boots fine and checkdisk will run and find no problems.  This happens sporadically but only from a cold boot.  It has never happened from a restart.   I have the latest Bios 1.3, Via 4.46 drivers, SP1, Nvidia's 40.72 along with the latest updates for my other hardware.  It has happened with prior bios's and earlier drivers.  I am not overclocking.  Most of the bios settings are default.  Memory settings are at 333 controlled by SPD.
    My Rig:
AMD Athlon XP 2600 (333 fsb)
    MSI KT4 Ultra
    XP Professional SP-1
    512 Corsair PC3500 XMS
    3 Western Digital HD (2) 100Gb and (1) 30Gb
    Enermax EG465AX-VE powersupply
    MSI Gforce4 ti4600 128mb
    Terratec DMX 6Fire Sound Card
    Promise Ultra 133 TX2 card
    Intel Pro/1000 MT desktop adapter
    Plextor 40x12x40 CDRW
    Toshiba DVD
    Coolermaster ATC-110 case
    CoolerMaster HHC-001 Heatpipe HS

The D-Led bracket had all 4 leds green when the XP logo screen goes blank and the mouse pointer should appear. I have installed XP a few times and swapped most of the hardware with same problem.
I also have a KT3 Ultra 2 before the KT4 Ultra and never had those cold boot problems and I was using alot of the same haredware.
    Anybody with any suggestions

  • FileVault enabled; reboot on cold boot

I enabled FileVault on my 2011 MBP 15. The following sequence occurs when I perform a cold boot:
    Power on; no issues
Login screen appears and I enter my password
Hangs for a bit with the grey lined wheel spinning
    System reboots
Login screen appears and I enter my password
OS X Lion loads without issue
    Any ideas?

I think I've worked it out... I was running the laptop on mains power only with battery removed. Tried it with the battery installed and problem disappears, it must provide extra power at startup to spin up the HD. Laptop AC adaptor is 200W though, would have thought this would be enough...

  • Reboot when cold booting

    Hi.
I encrypted my MBP harddrive with the new FileVault feature. Recently my MBP developed an issue where it would hang a while on the spinner when cold booting, then just reboot - and then boot just fine.
This requires me to type in my decryption password two times. Doesn't seem healthy. I tried restoring file permissions from Disk Utility but this didn't help.
Do you know what is causing this and perhaps how I could fix it?

It seems to be a problem with paralles desktop.

  • MSI K8T-NEO won't post from a cold boot

Alrighty here is my strange problem.  I have my system connected to a surge protector powerstip.  When I power my machine down I also shut off the powerstrip which cuts wall power off from the machine.  When I turn the power back on the and then fire up the computer every single time it will not POST on the first try.  The drive lights cd-roms come on but the HD's never start.  So I hold the power button in for 6 seconds, then hit it a second time, and it boots every time.  Shutting down and restarting is no problem, so long as the power is never disconnected from the system.
    Here is my configuration
MSI K8T NEO Bios version 1.2
    Athlon 64 3200+ not overclocked
    1 512meg stick of Geil Ultra PC3200 slot 1
    1 512meg stick of Coarsair XMS3200 slot 2
memory is running at 333mhz 2-3-3-7 all setting are set to auto
Radeon 9500 in the AGP slot
    Sound Blaster Audigy
    Promise 100 TX4 Raid controller
2 WD 80 gig SE HD's connected to promise controller
    1 Pioneer PD-115 16X DVD drive
    1 Liteon 411-s I believe 4x DVD Writer
    1 Zip Drive
    Using AMD boxed CPU fan
    Powered by an Antec true 430 +3.3V 28A +5V 36A +12V 20A
According to core center +3.3 is at 3.31V, +5V is at 5.03V, +12V is at 11.76V
So anyway its prime stable etc.  But when ever the system has been powered off, and unplugged the first time I power on it always fails to post with the d-link indicator lights indicating a CPU failure.  Hold down the power button and it reboots.  Power the machine off, but don't disconnect wall power powers back on just fine.
This is strange, since I use the surge protector to turn off speakers, etc!  Its also annoying, I used to have a MSI K7D-L Master 2xXP CPU's with the same hardware witht eh exception of the Geil RAM, and of course cpu, and mobo and never had any problems with a cold boot.  any suggestions?

Yeah I tried having only one stick of ram in the machine, and it hangs on a cold boot when its been unplugged/or powersupply switched off.  Reboot again and no problems.  I tried just having the geil installed, and the corsair stick installed same problem.  I have ordered a second Geil Ultra PC3200 stick so I'll have matched sticks and will be able to run at 400mhz FSB.  The lack of a manual memory speed setting overide in the bios is frustrating.  Yes I know the speed is more or less set by the CPU but there must be some override mechinism if you can slow it down....
I have also tried with just a video card installed, and one stick of ram to see if the problem would go away.  No GO.  One thing to mention is I had a Radeon 9700pro that I got from new egg refurbed that I had to send back becasue the card would not power on when the system was booted, unless you disconnected the power lead got the warning message, and then powered off and reconnected the power lead.  Possibly this card may have damaged something else?  OR the mobo was bad and damaged the card?  The mobo was new, the ram (geil), CPU, and 9700pro were all refurbs.  Everything else was from a previous dual processor system and was working fine.
Both of the Western digitals are set as masters and each are on their own seperate ide channels.  The Promise FastTrack100 TX4, has 4 IDE channels and the HD's are connect to channel 1 and channel 2 on the FastTrack controller.
Specifically what happens is if the power has been off, I turn the power on, hit the power button.  Lights come on, the cd-rom drives lights start blinking, fans come on, and I hear this kinda of poping sound out of the speakers like the kind of sound you get when you first power on the machine but it happens a second time about 2 seconds after powering on the machine, and it just sits in this kind of hung up state, hitting the reset button does nothing.  Then I power off power back on and it POSTS, and back to normal.  So long as the system is never disconnected from the power source while it is off, it will power back on the first time.  This is really strange I've never had a system do this before.  I'm beginning to wonder if I just have a bad/faulty board and ought to RMA it?

  • Cold boot problems

    Hi out there,
I have a problem with my MSI 6590. When I boot it hangs on th detection of the IDE HDD. It stays there for about 25 seconds and then tries the floppy and cd-rom. As it does not find an OS it stopps. When warmbooting from there the boot works as HDD is recognized and everything works fine from there on.
Anybody out there who has teh same problem or an explanationor better even a fix ?
    I am using a WD1200JB.
    :(

    Hi,
Don't know if our issues have anything in common, but me and a few others have experienced lots of cold boot crashes with Win2K and WinXP. These issues disappear when the PC has "warmed up". Boards KT4 Ultra and KT4V.
In my case for example, W2K might crash on cold boot reporting random errors, but this never happens when the PC has warmed up.
All my components have been checked and bios settings set to default so it has to be an issue with the board or bios code or something. I have also reinstalled the OS many times and tried different IDE cables, power supplies - you name it. Issues remain (and got worse with the new 1.25 beta bios, so I flashed back to v1.10).
But - check your cables and connections. Try to replace the IDE cable and also try the suggested jumper change. Hopefully your issue is just a loose connection or starts working with a different jumper setup.
As a long shot bug check - try to drop your cpu FSB down to 128 MHz or even all the way to 100 MHz (if running at 133 MHz) and check whether this takes the issue away.
    Regards,
    Tom

  • Cold boot problem

ok, first of all, I am a newbie on everything...
Anyway; I boughty this PC from a shop in France and it was working VERY WELL untill I updated the BIOS to 2.1 from 2.0 with the MSI LIVE stuff.
it is still working but i cant cold-boot it--->just hangs on everything from "Early chipset initialization" to "initializing video interface" (can't get any further...) BUT when i press the little restart button, everything works just fine.
I don't get it, I didn't change the BIOS settings or anything, I've tried to clear that little CMOS JBAT1 jumper but no, it doesn't want to boot.
I've heard about power shortages too but i'm too afraid to touch it
I guess you'll ask me the integrated sub-derivation code of the 65d4fs641sd56g41sg654dg-memory, please indicate how i check what you ask for and THANK YOU for even reading this

Alexfance will not be able to set or check if the DDR volts were/are at least 2.65V because he is unable to past POST and get into BIOS.
This is not an uncommon cercumstance, mostly it is fixed by reseting  CMOS.     Remember to go into BIOS and check all settings as you will have just reset them to default.
If that does not work then get some PC2100 or PC2700 memory, plug in, reset CMOS boot and increase the DDR volts by one increment, replace memory with original, intereate this process until you get POST successful or DDRVolts gets into red range.    At that stage think about RMAing.

  • [Z87M GAMING] Debug Code 98 on cold boot

    Hi All,
Hopefully someone can help me with this, it's been driving me up the wall for a while now.
    First off, specs:
    Z87M GAMING with bios v1.2
    Intel 4670k, stock clock settings
Corsair Vengeance 1866MHz, CL set by XMP to rated speed.
Gigabyte Windforce 760 OC Edition, factory set OC clock.
Razer Deathstalker, Naga Hex KB & Mouse
So, my problem is that when cold booting the system it hangs with a code 98 on the debug leds. I then have to hit the hard reset button where the screen will then spark to life, complete with a message telling me my overclocking settings have failed. Note that everything was already stock, just XMP enabled. It only seems to do this after being fully powered down following a gaming session.
What has me stumped is that it doesn't do this with the PEG card removed, using on-board Intel gfx it will post & boot every time without popping an error. Nor are there any problems with the Geforce PEG card once it boots into windows, either during normal gaming or when doing a burn-in test with FurMark or Unigine Heaven benchmark. The PEG card was also tested in an older MSI/Intel based setup to rule it out.
All this leads me to think there could be either an issue with the bios, or compatibility problems with the Gigabyte & MSI products. I couldn't see a beta bios for the Z87M GAMING, and having RMA'd the cpu/ram/motherboard for the supplier to test only to be told there was no fault found, well... I really need to be sure of what the problem is.
So any suggestions or fixes, links to beta bios for this board, I'll try anything to just make it work rather than babysit it while it boots.
Thanks in advance for any replies,
    Andrew

    0x98 Console input devices connect
The system doesn't like something that is plugged in, commonly a compatibility problem with a mouse or keyboard.
Misconception. XMP 'is' overclocking, and it is possible it may have something to do with the problem. Return the RAM to default and see if the problem persists.
Admin or moderator would need to check on a Beta BIOS availability.

  • Neo4 Platinum failed to cold boot?

when power up the system, power LED is lighted, the CPU fan is running, everything seems to be ok, but no screen, no BEEP sound--> hang
need to press RESET button many times, then it will boot to OS without any problem, and system is stable
    what's the problem?
    thanks for any advice!!!
MB: MSI Neo4 Platinum, BIOS: v1.2
    RAM: 512MBx2
    CPU: K8 3200+, overclocked to 240x10

    Hi all, 1st post here.
    System specs:
    AMD 3000+ CPU Winchester CBBID
MSI K8N Neo4 SLI Platinum with latest bios
    MSI NX6600GT video card
    OCZ PowerStream 420 PSU
2 x 256mg OCZ Gold rev 3 dual channel set
    Asus DVD-Rom E616P2
Maxtor 80 gig SATA pluged in on SATA #4
    Floppy drive
    WinXP Pro SP2
I am also affected by this cold boot issue when overclocking. Anything above 229 will give me this issue.
The PSU I am using was running 6 months on an Intel rig without issues and the memory is memtest stable upto 250 at stk.
On top of the cold boot issue I was getting a BSOD sometimes when booting into winxp after the Core Center loads. I noticed I had a jumper on the hdd set to master, so I removed it and the blue screens have stopped ... so far. I was told by a friend that I should plug the HDD into #3 or #4 Sata connector which I did.
    Vcore 1.45v + 3.3%
    NF4 1.6v
    Memory 2.7v on auto according to cpuz128 2.5,3,3,8 1T
    HT 3x
    CPU ratio 9x
I am able to reach 250 HTT speed (FSB) by using clockgen and it passes windows memtest and is OCCT stable.
However, the only way I have found to pass the 229 barrier in the bios and not have a cold boot, is to set the HT multi to 2x or 1x.
Anything more will produce a cold boot.
Since I removed the jumper from the HDD The system has been running without issues at 226 HTT speed (FSB).
I tried to OC past 229 again and got a cold boot at 230 ... again.
I was using a K8N NF4-F before and had the same cold boot issue however, it would not go over 229 unless the HT multi was set to 1x.
If it doesn't post do the following:
If system is on with a black screen, shut down by holding the start button until it does.
Turn off monitor, speakers and switch off on power supply.
Remove the power cord from power supply.
Push the start button until nothing lights up when you do. This will drain any juice left in capacitors.
After doing this you can reconnect the power supply, turn on the monitor, then the switch on the power supply. I have noticed many times that when you turn on the power supply switch the system will start up without pushing the start button.
If it's still dead, do all of the above again and add this extra step:
After you have pushed the start button to remove any power left in capacitors, push the CMOS clear button on the board and hold it about 1 second.
    Then reconnect etc etc.
In the countless times I have done this I have never had to remove the battery but that would be the last thing I would try if all of the above doesn't work for you.
If you cleared the CMOS you will need to enter the system time, date and any other settings you had.
I hoping MSI will address this issue.
The only work around so far I found it using clockgen.

  • K7N2 Delta-L: Strange cold boot problem & solution

My K7N2 Delta-L has a problem cold booting when the vcore is set in the bios at 1.65v of higher. After a cold boot, you get a blank black screen. I noticed that even if you run at default speeds but set the vcore to 1.65v of higher the problem still occurs. There is no problem rebooting however.
    I found the following solutions:
    1. After you power up and get a blank, hit the reset button.
    2. Don't unplug your PC. My PC is connected to a AVR and after I power down the PC I usually turn the AVR off. If i do this, than the computer will have a booting problem if I try to boot it up 30 minutes later or so. Now if I don't unplug it/power off the AVR than everything is fine.
I don't understand why it acts the way it does though.
Does anyone know of any other solutions?

Have you cleared the cmos. If you do be sure you have the power turned off don't move the cmos jumper with the power on.
I found that turning off power at power supply and unpluging, than turning on the computer the fans will spin just a little this drains all the power. Clear cmos 2-3 than return to
    1-2 position.
Than plug the power back in and turn it back on, than try the computer again.

    Hi, Wobble Woo.
The repeated kernel panic you're experiencing is a common issue on the mid-2010 MacBook Pro 15". I have the same laptop and the same issue. It's caused by the descrete graphics card. One solution, albeit a bit disappointing and temporary, is to use an application called gfxCardStatus. It runs in the statusbar and tells you which GPU is running. You can use the application to set your laptop to use the integrated GPU only, which will put an end to your kernel panics. But if you are using applications which require heavy graphics (such as photoshop and most video games), you'll just have to count your luck.
Some other users have had their motherboard successfully replaced. Take it to an Apple Store and ask them to run a GPU test. They should find the error (a manufacture defect, it seems) and replace your motherboard, with or without warranty. I hope this helps.

  • ATI Graphics card not detected on cold boot, works on warm boot

    Hi All,
I hope you can help me out with this.
    I'm using Radeon HD7850 with ATI-Catalyst.
The issue is, if I do a cold boot (physically turn off the power, turn back on) the system won't boot into X, only tty.
At this point, a reboot works fine.
Or if I don't turn off the power, just shutdown and reboot (warm boot), it works ok.
Here's the Xorg log on cold boot:

    Here's the Xorg.conf:
    Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier "aticonfig Layout"
    Screen 0 "aticonfig-Screen[0]-0" 0 0
    EndSection
    Section "Module"
    EndSection
    Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "aticonfig-Monitor[0]-0"
    Option "VendorName" "ATI Proprietary Driver"
    Option "ModelName" "Generic Autodetecting Monitor"
    Option "DPMS" "true"
    EndSection
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "aticonfig-Device[0]-0"
    Driver "fglrx"
    BusID "PCI:6:0:0"
    Option "OpenGLOverlay" "0"
    EndSection
    Section "Screen"
    Identifier "aticonfig-Screen[0]-0"
    Device "aticonfig-Device[0]-0"
    Monitor "aticonfig-Monitor[0]-0"
    DefaultDepth 24
    SubSection "Display"
    Viewport 0 0
    Depth 24
    EndSubSection
    EndSection
    Section "DRI"
    Mode 0666
    EndSection
Setting the PCI BusID in Xorg.conf seems to have no effect, even if I set it to 6:0:0 or 7:0:0, its still the same.
Do I need to set AutoAddDevices off?

    Thanks for the reply!
The open source driver doesn't support my card yet. I tried installing it first since its the recommended driver, but Xorg couldn't detect any display at all.
It seems the PCI BusID is not being read from the xorg.conf file. There's auto detection everytime the PC boots.

  • Tuxedo 8.0 32-bit on Solaris 8 64-bit ( boot-mode)

    Hi:
    i have questions :
    I have Tuxedo 8.0 32-bit product, i'll need run on solaris 8
    ( 64-bit boot-mode ) .
    Is there Problems wiht that???
    My hardware is :

    System clock frequency: 113 MHz
    Memory size: 2048 Megabytes

    Hi Anthony :
Do you know something about performace between
    Tuxedo 32-bit and Tuxedo 64-bit ?
    Thanks ...
    Alex ...
Do you working in Bea or other Enterprise ??

Hi Alex, we are also using tuxedo 32-bit on Solaris 64-bit operating
    system. There
is no problem doing this as your solaris version supports both 32 bit
    and 64 bit
programs. The things to watch out for are when you are building a tuxedo
    application,
you have to make sure that all the libraries you link with are also 32
    bit libraries,
including oracle. We ran into build problems when some libraries were
    32 bit
    and others were 64 bit.
There's good information about 32bit v 64bit on solaris at the following
    web site...
    http://docs.sun.com/?p=/doc/806-6543/6jffrdmee&a=view
I personally would use 64bit if possible, but it's no big deal to build
    32 bit
applications because my tuxedo application does not need a 64bit address
    space
and is not computationally heavy. Most of the CPU takes place in the
    database,
which in our case is Oracle, and which happens to be 64bit anyway. So
    it's not
a bad thing to build a 32 bit tuxedo application that runs on a 64 bit
    operating
system, for most types of tuxedo applications.

    Hi again :
    you link show that :
Sun Solaris 8 tuxedo v8.0 Native 64-bit version - SPARC
    Sun Solaris 8 SPARC X *(using 2.7 32-bit binaries)
    32-bit on 64-bit OS supported
Then Tuxedo 8.0 32.bit ruuning on Solaris 8 64-bit. OK
there is support from Bea . Is that is correct ???
I'll need used Tuxedo 64-bit ,you could benefit in performance.
    Thanks Thanks ...

If the platform list shows that a 32-bit build is certified on a 64bit
OS, then you can run it there.
If you want an actual 64 bit build, it is because you want the big
address space, longer longs in FML, and everything else you get from
    64
    bits.
If you want to have an application span Solaris and Digital UNIX, which
is always 64 bit, you might want both to be 64 bits so that you do
    not
lose any data in the conversion.
On HP, you can't link 32-bit Tuxedo with another product that is 64-bit
(Oracle for example). You might need a 64 bit Tuxedo in order to work
    with other products.
