Solaris Installation just give me a "grub " prompt,
Hi Solaris Experts,
Upon installing the solaris in 32 bit pc intel celeron single core, when I already boot the installation disk it just give me "grub>" prompt it will not go with the boot menu of the solaris. What will I need to do. Is there hardware compatibility?
How will I also install solaris into logical partition, is it possible? Any idea? I will mutli boot it along with other os.
Thanks.

Otherwise, look for the HCL on BigAdmin.
From the grub command line, there are things that you can type to try to manually poke around and boot.

ok. I hope someone can answer my question. I am new to photoshop. I need version cs4 in order to work with a designer and printer on some logo work. I've tried to download it but it just gives me individual files with no installer and nothing - including the adobe "instructions" seems to work. How can i get this software in a downloadable format? is it actually free - I'm assuming it is... Hope someone knows the answer to these questions...
The download itself is free and is valid for 30 days only. After that, the software ceases to work.
CS4 is pretty old, no longer sold and no longer supported by Adobe. It's also not compatible with many modern OSes.
Why do you have to work with such an obsolete version of Photoshop?
What kind of "designer" uses it? -
Solaris installation doesn't work as expected on both PCs I've tried it on?
Hi there, I have just tried to my Solaris 10 download on two PCs and it doesn't seem to go the way expected in the installation instructions: No Grub menu appears. It does say Grub at the top of the screen, tells me about base and extended memory, then it gives me a little prompt about being able to press Tab for a list of commands. A list of commands appears when I press Tab but having typed them one after another, it doesn't seem to be working. Is this normal?
Oops, sorry, my fault. Just checked the download instructions: I didn't concatenate the files. Sorry.

Hi there
I am installin sloaris 8 in Pentium Pro Machine with Quantum Firball Hard
Disk 10 GB , at installation time the Solaris recognize the existance of the hard disk by givingme the option to load from CD ROm or the Quantum Hard disk but later on it gives me the following message

Please Check the system or try another installation option
then it gives me Unix Prompt , I tried to use FDISK but could not get the right Disk name , I tried FDISK /drv/dsk/c0t0d0s0 or /drv/rdsk/c0t0d0s0

My macbookpro is not opening pdf sites from safari or firefox, it goes to the address but just gives me a black screen. I can however open a pdf file that I have saved on my HD, it opens on preview. any thoughts? osx 10.6.8
Back up all data.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
/Library/Internet Plug-ins
In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste (command-V) into the text box that opens, then press return.
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
I've seen an unconfirmed report that the "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can also interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you might need to remove it as well, if applicable.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again. -
Install_Check_1.6 tool and Solaris 10 5/09 panics after GRUB on Dell T7400
Hello anybody!
Apparently the Solaris 10 5/09 drop panics after the GRUB menu, for Solaris Installation. Similarly the Install_Check_1.6 Tool for Hardware Compatablity seems to do the same.
I can't capture the Kernel messages that appear on the screen. It goes too fast. I was able to see however that it points to SUNOS-8000-0G message. The system goes into an automatic reboot and hence if left alone continuously reboots;
Can anybody help on how to capture the kernel error messages during the boot period? My guess is that it may be a device driver compatablity issue, with what? I don't know. I am trying to update the firmware/bios but I doubt if that may change anything.
Does anyone have this problem. Is there a fix for this?
samAll,
I check the BIOS versions and it seems that everything is the latest. Therefore I am basically stuck on T7400 Dell precision system Solaris install.
Does anyone have this similar problem. If I can bypass this device specific errors (I think that is what they are), and load the OS, I might be able to go in and patch it up.
Has anyone experience this with Solaris on T7400?
Please help -
Installed, but stuck at GRUB prompt
After 4 tries, I have managed to install 0.8. On the reboot, however, I only get as far as a "GRUB>" prompt.
If I put the install disk in the drive, enter "reboot" at the GRUB prompt, and choose the option "Run installed system (/boot on a separate partition)", I am able to get a login prompt and start what appears to be a functional (base) system. But I have clearly missed something in the installation. I have a /boot/grub/menu.lst file; the noncommented lines are as follows:
timeout 5
default 0
color light-blue/black light-cyan/blue
# (0) Arch Linux
title Arch Linux
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda3 ro
initrd /kernel26.img
# (1) Arch Linux
title Arch Linux Fallback
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda3 ro
initrd /kernel26-fallback.img
kernel26.img and kernel26-fallback.img are both in the /boot directory.
What do I need to fix to make the system boot without a rescue disk?If you indeed have a boot partition on first partition of first drive (hd0,0; sda1) and a root one on third partition of a first drive (sda3), then your grub config seems to be alright. The example above is appropriate if there's no separate /boot partition.
When you're in a GRUB prompt, try entering those root/kernel/initrd lines by hand and check the output.

Is Perl part of default Solaris Installation ?
I am devloping an application which invokes a few perl scripts during installation. I just want to know:
Is Perl part of default/standard Solaris Installation ?
How safe is it to assume existence of Perl on client-side Solaris System?
Thanks & Regards,
SatishPerl has been in Solaris in /usr/bin since Solaris 8. I am not completely certain, but I believe it is included in all metaclusters including the minimal Core cluster.

[SOLVED] After latest upgrad. Boots to grub prompt
Hi,
I just upgraded my Thinkpad T61 following
https://www.archlinux.org/news/binaries … ervention/
After completeing the upgrade I got an error "Unable to start shell:/bin/bash" in Terminator. I commented out /dev/pts in /etc/fstab following
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=169076
the problem did not go away. I decided to reboot After which the computer boots only to a grub prompt.
I'm posting this after booting with a linuxmint USB stick so Ihave access to the / partition on the laptop.
I've been on systemd for a while now. However I now suspect that I was not fully migrated to systemd. I did do a pacman -R initscripts during the latest upgrade.
Does anybody know how I can recover from this?
need all the help I can get on this one!
Last edited by emk (2013-09-02 03:22:05)Trilby, you are correct the empty /boot was because I neglected to mount the /boot partition. My mistake.
2. I did have errors as per https://www.archlinux.org/news/binaries … ervention/ i.e the upgrade failed because /bin /sbin were still in the filesystem. I followed the steps in the link and found some files that were holding things up.
I removed the following files
pacman -R gen-init-cpio wlan-ng26-utils consolekit dcron hpoj initscripts tcp_wrappers
I boot via systemd though I suspect now I was not fully migrated.
3. Output of ls on boot partition:

4. You are probably right. I have both grub 0.97 and grub 2 in the pacman pkg cache
5. I did follow the steps except that trying to close a terminal once the bash error croped up led to my being logged out before I could run the last two commands 'pacman -S bash and Pacman -Su'
Thanks Trilby. I feel like my Linux chops are evaporating the older I get :0 -
Recovering Arch from Grub prompt (GRUB4DOS)
Long story short, I needed to install Windows 8 with my Arch already installed, wiping out the bootloader (I don't get what actually happens so I might be wrong here on the technical side).
I've tried different methods, from using programs like EasyBCD to command-line work (detailed here https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … #p1344396), and I've reached the conclusion that perhaps I need to work on the GRUB prompt itself. As described in that link, I might have been on to something with
root (hd0, 2)
setup (hd0)
except that the command setup cannot be found.
Also, I'd like to point out that sometimes my computer boots into a black-and-white list (kinda like GRUB), and sometimes it uses the metro-style "Choose an Operating System", the one with the light blue background.
Any help please? I'd just like to get my Arch setup back.

Minimum Solaris installation for Directory Server
Hello,
i want to set up a new Solaris installation for Sun ONE directory server.
But i don't want to install always the "entire distribution" and then turn off all services. I want to keep the solaris os installation as small as possible. Has anybody tried this before and can report some experiences? Is the "reduced network" cluster the right way to go or better the "core" cluster? Does anybody have a list of the packages which must be installed after a minimal solaris installation for the ds to work?
Thanks a lot,
af_inetSince you original question is "minimum requirement
at the SERVER", I would say that X is not really
needed at the server end if you use installer text
mode CLI (command is "./installer -nodisplay")
instead of installer graphical mode (GUI). However,
to fix uninstall/reinstall issue, X is needed as the
"prodreg" which is used to uninstall packages is a X
program, without text mode option. This is correct.
It is not a must to run ./startconsole (X program)
LOCALLY so as to perform DS admin functions as you
could always run SUN ONE Console REMOTELY from any
remote host (Windows or UNIX/Linux) with just the
console binaries installed. (for large data centre
env. the LDAP server is usually locked in server room
away from your desk and you tend to use remote admin
console). This is correct too. I think it's a matter of taste if i want to install console on the DS itself or on a separate host. As long as i have only one DS i will leave it on the machine itself. But you are right, this is not a must. So i should have asked my question more precicely :-)
Thank you very much,
Chris -
Step by Step RAC 11GR2 with Grid Infrastructure on Solaris installation
Y'ello All,
Please I need documentation for RAC 11GR2 with Grid Infrastructure on Solaris installation urgently.
Thany you very much for your support
BR,What type of shared storage will you be using?
Properly configure DNS
Properly configure /etc/hosts files
Properly configure SCAN
Properly configure SHARED storage (Preferably ASM - "raw" devices) - make sure you partition the disk devices to "skip" the first 1MB of the device)
BEFORE installation, confirm grid-owner and oracle-rdbms-owner can read AND write to these shared devices from ALL nodes. Permissions must be set to <grid-owner:<grid+oracle shared group> (grid:oinstall where oracle is also in the oinstall group)
Properly configure ssh password-less connections for both GRID-owner AND oracle-rdbms-owner.
IP addresses required
3 SCAN addresses that point to myhost-scan.mydomain.tld in a round-robin fashion
PER NODE:
1 public IP address
1 virtual IP address
1 interconnect IP address should be iin /etc/hosts ONLY - Non-routable and not reachable via the public interface. DO NOT use CROSSOVER cable.
Interconnect should be on a DEDICATED INTERCONNECT switch.
As for the SHARED storage, the LUNS/Devices can be "carved" out on your SAN by your SAN admin. MAKE SURE that ALL devices in a given diskgroup are EQUAL size. (ie - DATA000=250GB/each, DATA001 500GB/each etc)
The installation guide gives a lot of directions on PRE-REQUISITES. Follow them. And remember, since you are new to this, you may install this several times before you get it the way you need it to be. Even installing MANY RAC clusters on multiple platforms, I still install it 2-3 times. Generally because the SA has forgotten some pre-req step. -
Macbook Air Mid 2011 - Stuck in Grub Prompt
Hi Archers,
I am trying to install Arch on an Mid 2011 Macbook Air. So far it looks ok, I am following the Wiki and this guide. The bootloader stuff is confusing me a little. I do not want to replace the bootloader from OSx, so I do not use rEFInd, right? I want to use the "Press alt while booting"-method, so does the above guide.
First problem:
While generating the standalone "boot.efi" file the "-C" option is not recognized.
grub-mkstandalone -o boot.efi -d usr/lib/grub/x86_64-efi -O x86_64-efi -C xz boot/grub/grub.cfg
It complains that -C is not a valid parameter, so I just skipped it.
After deleting the boot partition in OSx and creating the directories and files and copying the boot.efi file I am able to boot from this partition. Problem #2: After booting the partition I am stuck in a Grub prompt. It recognizes HD0 and 1 and after fiddling around with
ls (hd0)
ls (hd1)
ls (hd0,4)
It always complains about an unrecognized partition type.
Any help appreciated. Will I get it working in this state?
Booting from USB and installing the base system worked like a charm, I have a feeling I nearly got it but the bootloader stuff is just plain confusing.
Thanks in advance.
Last edited by Urfaust (2014-01-29 18:55:29)Ok, I cannot find another guide which uses the OSx Bootloader. I installed rEFInd, reformated /boot with mkfs.ext2, chrooted to the base system and:
# pacman -S grub-efi-x86_64
# mkdir -p /boot/efi
# mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /boot/efi
# modprobe dm-mod
# grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot/efi --bootloader-id=arch_grub --recheck --debug
# mkdir -p /boot/grub/locale
# cp /usr/share/locale/en\@quot/LC_MESSAGES/grub.mo /boot/grub/locale/en.mo
The boot partition is recognized in rEFind, if I choose to boot from it Grub is firing up, I can see 2 menu entries (normal and fallback) after choosing the first I get:
error: no such device: someUID
Loading Linux core repo kernel ...
error: no such partition
Loading initial ramdiks ...
unaligned pointer 0x22
Aborted. Press any key to exit
Why won't Grub find the partition?

[Solved] Booted into grub prompt
Hello,
I've followed the wiki to the last step but couldn't get booted into Arch:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beginners%27_guide
After I've generated the grub.cfg and rebooted.
I got a grub prompt.
I don't know what I am missing so please tell me what to do and I'll post the result.
I'm installing it on qemu. The image is archlinux-2014.11.01-dual.iso
fdisk result of the image:

Last edited by tgckpg (2014-11-24 07:10:31)After googling and such.
I tried to use the grub command to boot it manually but couldn't get it work.
I noticed some files are missing in /boot folder.
( Not sure, but from the look of it it seemed
there is no such file initramfs-linux.img and vmlinuz-linux for me to run initrd or linux command in grub )
So I boot back into the CD and ran "pacstrap -i base base_devel" & "grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg" again.
And the file is there!
And I booted into Arch!
cheers:) -
whenever i try to switch on my iPod it just gives me a message to go to ipod support and nothing else
First, try doing a reset (to restart the iPod)
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1320
If that just goes back to the error message, try putting the iPod into Disk Mode
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363
If that works, connect it to the Mac and run iTunes. iTunes may say something about "recovery" and prompt you to do a Restore on the iPod. That could mean the iPod's storage has some type of data corruption, and needs to be erased, and its software reinstalled.
Unfortunately, (if the iPod does not go into Disk Mode) the most likely cause for this on a "classic" iPod that uses a hard drive for storage, is a faulty hard drive.
