Solaris installation on amd64 laptop

Hi!
I am trying to install Solaris 10 on a laptop (HP Pavilion zv6000 with an amd64 processor).
The installation begins normally with GRUB. The problems I a experiencing start when I have the opportunity to choose between 'Solaris interactive', 'Custom jumpstart' and take place whatever is the choice I made with GRUB (Solaris, ttya or ttyb).
The screen becomes almost unreadable. Strange characters are displayed and many others are missing. It is also impossible to interact with the system using the keyboard. The only way to proceed is to wait to reach the timeout to select automatically the default option.
Moreover the installation freezes randomly, sometimes during the countdown (after which 'Solaris interactive' is chosen by default) or afterwards... But this always takes place at different times. Anyway I cannot read what is displayed on the screen.
Would you have any ideas?
Thank you very much!

The reason is simple why it's work on VirtualBox. In VBox, this software emulates a generic graphical chipset. In one phrase, we have the same chipset for each machine type.
Look if Solaris 10 can run with VESA driver and when not you can still share the chipset reference that you have and I can try to see if this is supported or not.

  • SOlaris 10 install from laptop

Hi, I was just wondering if there's any way I can make a Solaris installation using a Solaris OS image on my laptop, so i don't have to carry a USB key, or change it everytime I need to install or re-install a server.
Basically, I would setup ALOM, and then run the installation from my Windows based laptop while being able to do other work during the installation. Is there anyway I could do this?
    Thanks

VMWare or Virtual Box could setup a virtual Solaris instance that installs from your laptop.
    Cheers,

  • No Disk meet the criteria for Solaris installation

Hi all, I have a problem when trying to install Solaris 8 (Intel) on my PC. There are some funny things happened while installing the OS.
1.) My motherboard does not support booting from CD-ROM, so I downloaded a Device Assistant Boot Disk to boot it up. Then I use dd.exe to make the boot disk from the image, I have tried many times that after creating the boot disk, this boot disk will contain 512 bytes of bad sector. So why?
2.) After using this boot disk to boot up and install the OS, before entering to the detection of the bus type stuff (still on the white screen), at the bottom of the screen, it says "ata_command select failed ... ...", what does this mean?
3.) When the system go back to the white screen with language selection, I choose English (which is 1), and the system try to find my hard disk, but it failed and says "No Disk meet the criteria for Solaris installation" with a new line saying "installation documenation found.". So what is happening?
    Appreciate for any help.

Did you check that your adaptec scsi controller is
supported by solaris and/or has a working driver

  • How do I determine what type of Solaris installation I have ?

I'm runnig "SunOS PSP 5.8 Generic_108528-13 sun4u sparc SUNW,Sun-Fire-480R" but I would like to determine the type of Solaris installation I have....do I have a a "development" installation ? Do I have all the SUNW developer packages ? Also what are the "types of installations" that are possible ?
I'm thinkig about download the mysql binary (from Sunfreeware.com) and I went to the dpendencies site (http://wwws.sun.com/software/solaris/freeware/s8u7dependencies.html) to check what dependencies exist and I saw the following line (among other non "related" info.):
    mysql-3.23.43 gcmn-1.0 ncurses-5.2
What exactly does this mean ?

  • Confusing error building existing code on Solaris 10 Intel (AMD64)

I have Solaris 10 on AMD64, using the bundled GCC
    gcc version 3.4.3 (csl-sol210-3_4-branch+sol_rpath)
I'm attempting to build part of our large C++ application and am getting a strange link error:
ld: fatal: relocation error: file: ./obj_g/amd64-solaris10-gcc40/mksdic.o section: .rel.debug_info symbol: : relocation against a discarded symbol,
symbol is part of discarded section: .gnu.linkonce.t._ZNK18CompressedADFSARep21get_transition_vectorEv
collect2: ld returned 1 exit statusThe mangled symbol (containing ADFSARep) refers to a member function in the code.
Googling for this error only returns hits on people attempting to bootstrap GCC itself, and comes down to an incompatibility between Solaris ld and GNU ld. From what I've read elsewhere the recommendation is to use GNU as but Sun ld, so I'm completely confused.
Simple C++ programs work fine, of course. The executable in question uses several .o files as well as a number of static libraries. However, I can get a similar error if I construct a command-line that just links two of the object files without including any of the static libraries.
I also tried with GCC 4.0.x, same result.
Any and all help and suggestions are appreciated.
    Tom Emerson

Try to ask your question in Solaris 10 x86 forum, since the question seems to be amd64 specific.
Also, could you provide (if possible) those two c++ files source which object files fail to link along with the command line.
As a side note, would you consider an option to migrate your project to SunStudio?

  • Installing Solaris on Thinkpad 600 Laptop

I have installed Solaris 8 on my laptop which is an IBM Thinkpad 600. Unfortunately, I am unable to configure the X Windows as my graphics card (NeoMagic) does not seem to be recognized.
Has anyone got any thoughts on how to resolve this.
Furthermore, I also have a Compaq Pressario 1600 which has a similar problem (graphics card is a Trident).

I would check the HCL to see if any one has gotten the system installed on that board. ECS isn't known to be a good board for a lot reasons and you find out the reasons by searching.

I'm tring to install this on an IBM netfinity 5100 server which has ultra 160 scsi drives.I get this message
"No Disks that meet the citeria in the Solaris installer documentation found. Please check the system or try another installation option #"
Please help me. I new to UNIX and SOLARIS.Thanks!

You are probably using the INSTALL CD that comes with Solaris x86.
Don't use it but use the Software CD 1/1 to boot and install the system instead. The INSTALL CD is supposed to be used on a completely blank system (no other OS's) although even there I think Software CD 1/1 does the job.
Also, if you are new to Solaris I advice you to get the FAQ (you can find it on e.g. http://www.science.uva.nl/pub/solaris/solaris2- it should be really helpfull during the first few weeks/months on Solaris

  • Is Perl part of default Solaris Installation ?

I am devloping an application which invokes a few perl scripts during installation. I just want to know:
Is Perl part of default/standard Solaris Installation ?
How safe is it to assume existence of Perl on client-side Solaris System?
    Thanks & Regards,
    Satish

Perl has been in Solaris in /usr/bin since Solaris 8. I am not completely certain, but I believe it is included in all metaclusters including the minimal Core cluster.
