Solaris Installation - Workstation or Server`

We are installing WL on Solaris 2.7. This is a fresh install on a new machine that will be used as a development staging area. We have an opportunity to either install Solaris 2.7 Workstation or Server (we don't want to install on Solaris 8). Does WL have a preference?
Thanks,
Steve

WL does not really have a preference. You can probably get by with
workstation since all we require is that Java works fine.
Thanks,
Michael

  • Minimum Solaris installation for Directory Server

    Hello,
    i want to set up a new Solaris installation for Sun ONE directory server.
    But i don't want to install always the "entire distribution" and then turn off all services. I want to keep the solaris os installation as small as possible. Has anybody tried this before and can report some experiences? Is the "reduced network" cluster the right way to go or better the "core" cluster? Does anybody have a list of the packages which must be installed after a minimal solaris installation for the ds to work?
    Thanks a lot,
    af_inet

    Since you original question is "minimum requirement
    at the SERVER", I would say that X is not really
    needed at the server end if you use installer text
    mode CLI (command is "./installer -nodisplay")
    instead of installer graphical mode (GUI). However,
    to fix uninstall/reinstall issue, X is needed as the
    "prodreg" which is used to uninstall packages is a X
    program, without text mode option.This is correct.
    It is not a must to run ./startconsole (X program)
    LOCALLY so as to perform DS admin functions as you
    could always run SUN ONE Console REMOTELY from any
    remote host (Windows or UNIX/Linux) with just the
    console binaries installed. (for large data centre
    env. the LDAP server is usually locked in server room
    away from your desk and you tend to use remote admin
    console).This is correct too. I think it's a matter of taste if i want to install console on the DS itself or on a separate host. As long as i have only one DS i will leave it on the machine itself. But you are right, this is not a must. So i should have asked my question more precicely :-)
    Thank you very much,

  • Problem booting Solaris 10 on ProLiant server after installation.

    Hi all!
    I have a brand new HP ProLiant DL360 G5 server. It contains 6 internal
    hard drives. RAID 5 is configured on these drives using built-in HP
    Smart Array P400i controller. I've just installed Solaris 10 8/07 on this
    server. Solaris requires a driver for P400i controller. I'm using Driver
    Update CD created from HP provided ISO image. Solaris 10 is
    officially supported OS for DL360 G5 server.
    Installation proceeds as expected:
    1) At the begining of Solaris installation, Driver Update is used to
    load HP driver for raid controller. During installation, disk is
    recognized as c1d0t0 (the only disk in system); one partition is
    created on this disk.
    2) Disk is devided to 6 slices:
    c1d0t0s0 - swap, 4GB
    c1d0t0s1 - /, cca 32GB
    c1d0t0s[3,4,5,6] - /zones/[a,b,c,d] - each cca 160GB
    3) At the end of installation, CPQary3 driver is installed to target
    system without any errors reported. No errors are reported during
    installation at all.
    After reboot, GRUB is started. It shows boot menu containing two
    options:
    - Solaris 'normal' boot
    - failsafe boot
    PROBLEM: Selecting 'normal' boot leads to immediate system restart.
    According to documentation, this case occurs when PCQary3
    driver is not installed.
    I'm able to boot using 'failsafe' option in grub. After entering single
    user, I load PCQary3 driver to runtime using 'install-du' command.
    I'm also able to find instaled Solaris using 'install-recovery' and mount
    its root volume to /a directory. Necessary driver IS installed inside
    /a/kernel/drv/ directory. Options 'bootpath' in /a/boot/solaris/bootenv.rc
    file is set up correctly pointing to device associated with /dev/dsk/c1d0t0s1
    device. Also GRUB is able to recognize UFS filesystem for boot partition.
    I've already tried (without success):
    1) Use RAID 1+0 instead of RAID5
    2) Create only 3,5GB partition instead of 700GB large one.
    3) Place / on c1d0t0s0 instead of c1d0t0s1.
    4) Re-create boot archive using 'bootadm update-archive -R /a'
    So, everything seems to be installed correctly, but system cannot boot.
    Do you have any ideas how to fix this problem?
    Jozef

    Sounds like an issue I just had with a brand new X4150, installation and failsafe worked fine, but normal booting led to immediate reboot of the server. This was due to an incompatibility of solaris and intel's newest generation xeon chips.
    You can still boot 'normal' solaris in 32-bit mode:
    hit 'e' at the grub menu, 'e' again to edit the 'normal' boot entry and add 'kernel/unix' after multiboot. This should boot up solaris in 32-bit mode. From there, download and install the latest patch set (125370-06 and 127112-05 are fixing this issue). After that you should be fine.

  • Unattended  Solaris 10 installation with jumpstart server issue

    Hello,
    I have setup a jumpstart server and am finding it difficult to get a fully unattended solaris 10 sparc 10/09 install on a t1000 client. The console connection to the client goes into interactive mode at the point in system identification when the installer asks if the system is networked or non-networked, and runs a setup of default time zone and date/time. Using esc-2 to advance through the interactive menu it asks if ithe system is on a subnet, for the netmask (which is there as default), asks if the current time is correct, then asks me to confirm that my selections are correct. When I confirm it goes on it's merry way to finish the installation unattended.
    My guess is it does not like one of the values in the sysidcfg file being used, but can't seem to see where the problem is. I don't see anything in the table of sysidcfg keywords from the online docs that specify networked or not, and I am using the network_interface keyword to define hostname, ip, default router, netmask and ipv6, and thought that should take care of the networking portion of system identification, also have timezone and time server set.
    Could it be that I am configuring an ethernet port that is not connected (bge0)? This computer will be deployed on a DMZ type network, and the jumpstart server is located on a different network our internal private network. The jumpstart installation via the server is done by using a temporary ethernet connection on a second interface of the client. One other note the defined time server is on the dmz so the installation program won't see it.
    Any suggestions on what might be causing the interactive installer to kick in?
    Here is the sysidcfg used for the client:
    more sysidcfg_vlan3/sysidcfg
    keyboard=US-English
    terminal=vt100
    security_policy=NONE
    system_locale=en_US
    install_locale=en_US

    timezone=US/Eastern
    network_interface=bge0 {hostname=D-Wade.xxx.xxxx.xxx default_route=xx.xx.xxx.1 ip_address=xx.xx.xxx..3 netmask=255.255.255.0 protocol_ipv6=no}
    name_service=NONE
    nfs4_domain=dynamic

    update. Fixed the problem with date/time by using abrante's suggestion of setting the time server to localhost. Don't get prompted for date/time information in the interactive installer any more.
    If I setup the sysidcfg file to configure the ethernet port being used to communicate with the jumpstart server (bge1), using an ip and netmask that is on the jumpstart server network, the installation goes through fully un-attended.
    Is there any way to get a second interface (in this case bge0) configured with ip/netmask values that are not part of the jumpstart server's network, using a non interactive jumpstart installation? Using these values in sysidcfg, the only things prompted for during the installation are, Is the system on a subnet, and what is the netmask. Anyone know what the sysidcfg part of the installation does to check the validity of a netmask value given in the sysidcfg file on the jumpstart server?
    If need be, I guess the interface could be configured in the finish script.

    You can go to doc.sun.com for all Solaris documentation. This should be the link you need, which is for the latest version of Solaris 10 (10/09).

    "No Disks that meet the citeria in the Solaris installer documentation found. Please check the system or try another installation option #"
    Please help me. I new to UNIX and SOLARIS.Thanks!

    You are probably using the INSTALL CD that comes with Solaris x86.
    Don't use it but use the Software CD 1/1 to boot and install the system instead. The INSTALL CD is supposed to be used on a completely blank system (no other OS's) although even there I think Software CD 1/1 does the job.
    Also, if you are new to Solaris I advice you to get the FAQ (you can find it on e.g. http://www.science.uva.nl/pub/solaris/solaris2- it should be really helpfull during the first few weeks/months on Solaris

  • Which Name Service for Solaris installation behind router?

    I want to install Solaris on my computer in a small home LAN behind a router.
    The Solaris computer is not part of a zone, a domain and there is no own DNS server in LAN.
    I want Solaris to get the DNS from router which in turn gets the DNS server assignments from network provider.
    This is similar to a Windows installation which gets the current DNS servers defintion from network provider at connection startup.
    Now what do I have to select during Solaris installation? See attached snapshot
    I guess LDAP, NIS and NIS+ are not suitable.
    Do I have to select "None"?
    Does DNS mean "own DNS server in LAN" or "DNS from router" (as intended)?
    Thank you
    Peter

    Hello
    I don't know you home setup but in general you will have to use DCHP so solaris will get all info from the route the ip and dns etc..
    If you want to use a static ip you will have to config the DNS by hand.

  • No Disk meet the criteria for Solaris installation

    Hi all, I have a problem when trying to install Solaris 8 (Intel) on my PC. There are some funny things happened while installing the OS.
    1.) My motherboard does not support booting from CD-ROM, so I downloaded a Device Assistant Boot Disk to boot it up. Then I use dd.exe to make the boot disk from the image, I have tried many times that after creating the boot disk, this boot disk will contain 512 bytes of bad sector. So why?
    2.) After using this boot disk to boot up and install the OS, before entering to the detection of the bus type stuff (still on the white screen), at the bottom of the screen, it says "ata_command select failed ... ...", what does this mean?
    3.) When the system go back to the white screen with language selection, I choose English (which is 1), and the system try to find my hard disk, but it failed and says "No Disk meet the criteria for Solaris installation" with a new line saying "installation documenation found.". So what is happening?
    Appreciate for any help.

  • Problems with Solaris 10 Secure Desktop server and Windows XP Client

    Solaris 10 Secure Desktop server - Windows XP Client - I've tried to open the Solaris Machine's desktop using the browser based http://MysolarisServerName/sdg and the windows native client
    http://MySolarisServerName/tarantella.
    I log in ok to the Solaris Server.
    I can open a VT420 session with the solaris machine, and this works OK, but whenever I try anything else e.g. smc, or full screen desktop it doesn't. I get various error messages e.g. can't open display, and Session Failed - X Session timeout.
    I've also installed Cgywin X Server on the Win XP machine to see if this makes a difference, but it doesn't.
    Any clues anyone?

    Being able to run the VT420 session, but not any X-Window sessions is the clue; it's an X-specific problem. Most likely, ssh isn't configured correctly, see: http://docs.sun.com/source/819-4309-10/en-us/base/indepth/ssh.html
    Pasting in the (most) relevant bit:
    Adding support for X applications
    To support X applications through OpenSSH, enable X11 forwarding in the OpenSSH configuration file. On each Secure Global Desktop host:
    1. Edit the sshd_config file and include the following:
    X11Forwarding yes
    2. Edit the ssh_config file and include the following:
    ForwardAgent yes
    ForwardX11 yes
    3. Restart the SSH daemon.
    Using SSH and X authorization
    If SSH connections fail, when X authorization is enabled, you may have to run the SSH daemon in ipv4-only mode because Secure Global Desktop may not support the xsecurity extension used on your server. You enable ipv4-only mode by editing your system SSH configuration file. For example:
    * On SUSE Linux, edit the /etc/sysconfig/ssh file and add a SSHD_OPTS="-4" line.
    * On Red Hat Enterprise Linux, edit the /etc/sysconfig/sshd file and add a OPTIONS="-4" line.
    Note If the SSH configuration file does not exist on your system, you can create it.
    You must restart the SSH daemon after making this change.
