Solaris/Linux/WinME/Win2k installations...

I got a new machine with (the pathetic!!!) WinME pre-installed. I then installed Win 2k on it with no problem. I wanted to install Solaris 8 & Linux Mandrake on it. I was going thru some installation docs, & I read that Solaris & at least 1 Windows needs a primary active partition to boot from, while Linux can be installed on an extended partition. The problem is, I'm extremely new to Linux & Solaris, & I've never tried this before. I have a single HDD 75 gig, & I've created 2 primary partitions (though only 1 could be made active using Partition Magic) & a bunch of other logical partitions. So is it possible to install all these on a single HDD & everything working decently? And if so, could someone start me off on how to go about doing this. Is there a particular order that I need to install these OSes? Or would that not make a difference?
Thanks a lot!!!
Mahesh

  • Changing locale to en_US.ISO8859-1 on Solaris/Linux running SAP

My query is for SAP Web AS 7.0 J2EE system on Solaris/Linux. Default locale setting at Solaris/Linux is UTF-8. If I change the locale setting to en_US.ISO8859-1, will the SAP system and it’s components‘ functionality be affected? Or will it continue to work as with UTF-8?

when the localeadm command is run for the first time, it will try to create a config file. This config file contains a list of locales and their locations in Solaris CDs/DVD.
Here is a sample of its content:
    #                 Solaris 10, Northern America partial locales
    # ( en_CA, en_CA.ISO8859-1, en_US, en_US.ISO8859-1, en_US.ISO8859-15,
    #  en_US.ISO8859-15, fr_CA, fr_CA.ISO8859-1 )

    SUNWale nam     solaris1
    SUNWaled        nam     solaris5

...You can run localeadm -C (Uppercase C) to create the config file. Just follow the instruction. If you are installing it from CD, solaris1 means Solaris 10 CD1, solaris2 means Solaris 10 CD2, and so on.
Once the config file has been created, then you execute the command you entered previously localeadm -a en_US.UTF-8 -d /cdrom/cdrom0. en_US.UTF-8 is part of North America region and Solaris 10 installs all locales under nam (North America).
Verify your installation by locale -a. It should return en_US.UTF-8 in the list.
    Hope this helps.
BTW, the config file (Locale_config_S10.txt) is located under /usr/sadm/lib/localeadm/

    Any ideas?

Sometimes, it's just easier and faster
to just start all over and re-install,
particularly when you have only a fresh install on your system.
This time, do not choose to include all the optional "documentation"
(that's what is held on CD5).
I have never found a reason to ever read that documentation so I stopped installing it.
... or you could download and burn a copy of CD5 and use it when prompted.

  • Solaris 11.2 x86 installation problem on GPT partitioned SSD

I recently bought a new computer with Windows 8.1 pre-installed on it. I want to install Solaris 11.2 as dual-boot together with the pre-installed windows 8.1.
The computer has a 128 GB SSD which is GPT partitioned. The SSD has 5 GPT partitions which are in use. I used a partition manager in Windows to shrink the size of the 5th partition (the windows system partition) so that i now have about 31 GB of unpartitioned, unused space after the 5 used partitions where i want to install Solaris into.
For installation, I downloaded the Solaris text installer ISO and burned it onto a CD-R. Now, whenever the installation menu shows me the GPT partitions of my SSD and i choose "Use a GPT partition of the disk" it always goes back to the first menu screen where it says "Welcome to the Oracle Solaris installtion menu".
Also, the installation menu shows the 5 used GPT partitions correctly, but then it shows me not one, but two partitions as "unused" with a size of 0.0 MB.
    What am i doing wrong?

If you have support, then you will be better served by opening a support case.
Assuming you don't, or you would have gone there already... There may well be bugs with supporting multiple OS's under GPT partitions.  I have no idea how much testing we did for such cases, and to be totally honest we put little effort into dual-booting systems these days, as using VM's in VIrtualBox or other VM managers is a better answer for 90i+% of people.
That said, posting the output from prtvtoc for the disk would give someone a chance to see if there's an obvious bug.

  • Oracle Linux 6.2 Installation Issue

Basic Oracle Linux 6.2 installation problems.
There are two iso files supplied for the installation.
    V29609-01.iso (install files)
    V29610-01.iso (bootable disc)
I boot from V29610-01.iso and the setup files run fine.
I am then prompted to identify the location of the second disc.
I encountered a problem where my DVD drive door would not open to insert the second disc.
To work around this problem I created a partition on my hard disc to copy
the installation files for the second disc to.
I boot from windows 7 (my primary operating system) and copy the installation files from the disc
    to the partition.
    I reboot from V29610-01.iso.
When prompted to identify the location of the install disc/files on my hard drive
I selected the drive where I copied the files to and press <enter>
I receive a message that it cannot find the image disc there.
    I shut down.
I boot from windows 7 and this time copy the actual disc image
    V29609-01.iso there instead
I reboot from V29610-01.iso and repeat the same procedure.
It still can't locate the disc image.
(I noticed the boot disc always defaults to the following structure in its displayed path \image\image.img
for the image file that it is trying to locate)
    I shutdown.
I boot from windows 7 and this time create a directory called image and
rename V29609-01.iso to image.img and copy it to the image directory. Still no luck.
Why can't it locate the disc image?
    Thankyou

    @ O.P.,
What are you actually trying to accomplish? Replacing your Windows OS with dual boot Linux? In the later case I recommend you to use VirtualBox and forget about the old-fashioned and obsolete dual boot. Of course your system must not be older than 7 years with a x86_64 CPU and VT-x or AMD-d option. Why do you want to install a 32-bit OS?
Anyway, the V29609-01.iso install DVD is bootable. You will need to burn the .iso disk image doing a raw disk copy, but not the content of the mounted .iso image or you will loose the bootloader. There is plenty of information in Google searching for "burn iso image". If you use Virtualbox you can boot right of the disk image file without burning a DVD.

While doing the Solaris 10 U6 jumpstart installation, it is going into interactive mode for netmask.
This is the sysidcfg file configuration being used :

after this it is going into interactive mode and prompting for netmask . After providing the netmask, installation goes through successfully.
so please suggest me some solution to avoid it going into interactive mode.

I have seen this too over the years and it ultimately comes down to something innate:
    Here are a few suggestions:
    1. Try and use interface ce0.
    2. Check default route on both jumpstart server and client.
    3. The arp cache may need to be flushed on the Jumpstart server.
    4. Use snoop and see what happens during the actual RARPing phase between the server and host.
    5. Switch the order in the sysid config file as indicated below:
    system_locale=en_US
    name_service=none
    network_interface=ce2

The installation guide available at https://linux.oracle.com/documentation/ may require some updating. Last time I checked, chapter 16.16.5. Recommended Partitioning Scheme, did not include the swap space required for hibernation mode.
    It is mentioned here:
    https://access.redhat.com/site/documentation/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/6/html/Installation_Guide/s2-diskpartrecommend-x86.html
Swap space size recommendations issued for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.0, 6.1, and 6.2 differed from the current recommendations, which were first issued with the release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.3 in June 2012 and did not account for hibernation space.

  • New wiki: Solaris-Linux command comparison

Ever have trouble remembering command syntax in Solaris or Linux? Like the precise syntax for how to list the 10 largest files, create an ISO image, or manage printers? Can you remember the syntax in Linux but need the equivalent in Solaris? Or vice versa?
A new wiki -- "OTN Solaris-Linux Command Comparo" -- lists common sysadmin tasks for both Oracle Solaris 10 & Oracle Enterprise Linux 5. You can access the wiki at:
Note that you need to register for Oracle Wiki site access first at [http://wikis.sun.com/display/Help/Registering|http://wikis.sun.com/display/Help/Registering] . Please give us some feedback on the wiki and add the commands you most often forget...

Yes, we wanted to go a little more in-depth and list actual syntax, but the idea is the same. You'll note that "A Sysadmin's Unixersal Translator (ROSETTA STONE)" is listed as a Reference in the .left-section panel of the wiki.

  • Article on the cost savings of Linux over Win2k for Oracle 9i????

Has anyone seen an article on cost savings for switching to Linux from Win2K as an Oracle server. I am trying to make the switch in my small company and looking for all the ammo I can find to make a presentation.
    Thanks in advance.
    Lone DBA

    Cost savings is Win2k licence
    No!
If you need cost saving and don't need support-
    don't use Oracle.
There are good databases with open source licenses,
for instance,SAP DB.Yes, or PostgreSQL, but SAP DB or PostreSQL don't have
features like Oracle btw. replication, referential integrity (I know that have this, but performance are bad), select large queries, distributed databases etc.
If You don't need this features You can use SAP or PostgreSQL.
Oracle work good without support - Oracle is very stable and documentation is excelent.
Support is optional and support is same in Windows and Linux.
If You have to pay for SLES or RH AS for Oracle support,You don't need licence for every servers or clients - for Win You have to pay licence for every server
and clients - this is cost savings (not support)
    This is real cost saving.
If you don't need Oracle support, you don't really need
    so expensive RDBMS :-)
    IMHO.???

    Hi Andrei,
The fmb file that you have made in NT can be ported to the UNIX

  • Win2k installer crashing w/ SATA RAID

I created a slipstream CD of Windows 2000 Pro w/ Service Pack 4 and followed the instructions in the manual to copy the RAID drivers to a floppy.  My disks are installed and configured for a stripped SATA RAID.
When I run the Win2k installer, all goes fine as I supply the RAID drivers from the disk.  The installer chugs away for a little while until the bar at the bottom displays "Starting Windows".  Then, after it thinks a little while longer, it crashes to a BSOD.
I tried this a couple times to be sure it wasn't a fluke, and also tried it with the supplied "XP only" driver disk, just to be sure.  Every time it crashes.  The error reads:
"PROCESS1_INITIALIZATION_FAILED" and also has the standard useless info about trying it again or asking your sysadmin.

I also copied the drivers from the Win2k directory on the MSI CD.  However, I am trying to run my two SATA drives in the striped RAID, and the basic Win2K CD (SP1, in my case) would not recognised the RAID, even using the drivers.  It would still just see two separate 80gb HDs.  I read elsewhere on this board that only SP3 or higher will recognise the RAID.
BTW, I am using the beta 1.43 BIOS, because it was nesessary to resolve the erroneous temperature reading issue.

  • Problems installing Solaris 8 w/ Win2k

    Hi all,
I tried to install Solaris 8 IA today on a hard drive that previously had Win2000. I ran into many problems and am incredibly frustrated, so please forgive me. I hope somebody can help.
In essence, I installed Solaris 8, and it looks like it changed my MBR for the worse. I managed to fix part of this, but I later found out it completely re-arranged my Win32 drive letters, rendering my Win2k partition practically unusable.
Here is how my two hard disks were laid out before the install:
HDD-0 (IBM DeskStar 60G) -- Primary IDE Master
25G allocated to a bootable Win2k partition w/ NTFS, mapped as drive "F:\"
    35G unallocated, unformated space
HDD-1 (WD Caviar 4G) -- Primary IDE Slave
    2G bootable Win95 w/ FAT-16, mapped as drive "C:\"
    1G Win95 extended w/ FAT-32, mapped as drive "D:\"
    71M Linux swap w/ ext2fs
    700M Linux native w/ ext2fs
    Points:
I am completely uninterested with the MBR of HDD-1. This is just a hard drive I moved over from my old computer that I still use because it has all of my data on it. I no longer boot any OSes from this drive. (BIOS boots to HDD-0.)
When I installed Win2k a month or two ago, it detected my HDD-1 partitions and labelled them as "C:\" and "D:\" (their previous labels when installed on my old computer), and I was forced to make my new Win2k partition on HDD-0 "F:\". I thought this would be a good idea anyway, since I didn't feel like changing all of my old shortcuts, preferences, etc. for my apps on HDD-1.
When I installed Solaris 8 (4/01) today, I gave it about 12G on HDD-0. It seems like I got the whole partitions thing to work well, and after the install, using the Software 1 of 2 CD, it rebooted the computer (as it said it would). I took the CD out, and as it went to boot HDD-0, I got the dreaded "Bad PBR sig". I immediately knew my MBR was messed up.
Now I couldn't boot to Win2k because Solaris was my active partition. I was able to use the Win2k install CD to deactivate the Solaris partition, but I was floored to learn that my drive assignments were completely changed. My F became C, C became D, and D became E. The natural consequence of this was that I couldn't boot Win2k, because my video drivers, etc. are configured to be on "F:\...", which of course doesn't exist. My solution to this was to install another Win2k setup on the same partition (dirty, but works).
    Questions:
    1) How the heck do I get my original drive assignments back in Win2k? I don't want to have to change all of my setup files to point to C instead of F, D instead of C, etc. (I don't even think this is feasible.) Nor do I want to re-install all of my software. The Win2k install CD and Adminstrative Tools don't seem to provide any way to do this. Is there some (free) partition software I can download to correct this? Can the Solaris fdisk do this?
    2) What's up with Solaris? How do I get this to work? I can boot the HD installation from the CD, but I can't do much because my video card apparently isn't supported and so everything comes up yucky. But how can I boot it without the CD and with a dual boot option? Is this one of those "you can't put boot code outside the first 1024 cylinders, yada, yada, yada" deals? If so, just shoot me now. <g>
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I blew the whole day on this. It pains me to say this, but... I know we all crack on Microshaft's business practices, but, FWIW, I installed Win2k in about 30 minutes, with not a single problem, with all devices being configured properly and having drivers, and haven't encountered a glitch since. I think that has a lot to do with their "popularity". There needs to be serious competition.
    Thanks,
    John
PS: I don't have access to e-mail until this is cleared up, so please post here.

Well, this is my solution to my problem:
I was able to install a second Win2k on my first hard drive to at least get back to my Win2k stuff. This leaves a total mess though, because now I have two user accounts, two installations, files pointing to the wrong place, registry settings all messed up, drivers installed twice, etc. So what I'm going to do is go ahead and install Linux, leave my Solaris partition alone (I think it's okay, though I can't boot to it w/o the CD), backup all the Win2k data and files I want to keep (not much -- it's a fresh computer), and then reformat my Win2k partition and reinstall Win2k.
The thing I'm still hazy on is the whole "1024 cylinders" issue. I'm not sure if I have to re-partition my hard drive, etc.
When you install Solaris, be sure to remember that Solaris and Linux swap use the same code (0x82 I think it is) for the partition. Read the Solaris documentation to make sure, but I think after you install Solaris you might have to reinstall Linux, or something like that.
Good luck. This is very confusing. I'm disappointed with the lack of documentation for installing Solaris. What did I pay $45 for? Thirty-five different translations of the same skimpy docs? Terrible. At least M$ takes care of its customers.

    "...choose Custom Installation and select
    WebLogic Server, which includes WebLogic
    Workshop."
I did so .. but their is no
    workshop directory under weblogic700 ,
like it is the case on our linux box ..Furthermore .. if I
    make a custom installation,
    and choose everything ..
I can see an advertisement for
the workshop during installation ( a gif ..)
but the workshop is still not installed ..
Seems indeed for me that he is missing
    in the Solaris installer ..
Can anyone give me an advise
you can I get the workshop
    on my solaris box ?
    Thanks !
