Solaris Memory Allocation Questions

Hi,
I am a Columbia University engineering graduate student doing research on Solaris 10 Operating System. I just have 3 quick questions that I was unable to find answers for on the Sun Documentation website. If any1 can help me answer these questions or point me to resources that do I would really appreciate it. The questions are as follows.
1. Does Solaris 10 provide developers with methods to ask for memory that only programs running with a certain security key or privilege can access?
2. Also, can develops ask for private memory? I understand that during write on shared memories, copy-on-write will generate a copy of the shared memory page and make that private to the process but I am not sure if there are ways to allocate private memory at the beginning.
3. Does Solaris 10 provide developers with methods to ask for memory that is fixed in memory and not pageable? I understand that by asking for ISM then the pages are locked in memory. But I was wondering if there are methods that an application can call that does this without having to share memory.

Solaris 10 changed everything to be based on process privileges (see the output of "ppriv -vp" for a list). It's not clear to me on a brief inspection which limits access to a processes address space but that is the mechanism.

    Does Solaris use a 'buddy' algorithm for dealing with external memory fragmentation like Linux.
    Secondly, does Solaris still use a 'slab-allocator' scheme for dealing with internal memory fragmentation as it did in in the 2.4 release.

  • Can't use memory allocated in C to write then read BitmapData in AS

    Hi all,
    I've been attempting to use Alchemy to allocate a chunk of memory in C, and then write a bitmap to the memory (via getPixels) which is I would then be able to modify using my super fast C image processing functions.  I've been following the "Memory allocation in C with direct access in Actionscript (FAST!!)" section from here.
    The problem is that when I allocate the memory in C, then try to display the image using setImage, all I see is a black box on the screen.  The code below shows how I use getPixels to fill the C memory region with my bitmap data, then use setPixels to fill the BitmapData object which is displayed on the screen.  Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong here?  I've been really stuck on this

    I too attempted to use a method similar to yours to no avail. I posted my solution for passing bytearray data to/from alchemy here:

    There is full flash code and C++ code so you should be able to answer all your questions just by reading my post. However, one thing I see about how you're passing your pointer back to flash is:
        //return pointer to the location in memory
        return AS3_Int((int)buffer);
    I think should be:
        //return pointer to the location in memory
        return AS3_Ptr(buffer);
    You shouldn't be casting your char array as an int and returning it, just use AS3_Ptr(buffer) and that will return the actual memory address as an int to flash. I'm not 100% sure but I think this could be an issue. I use this method also in my code you can find in the link above so you can see the full implementation there. Hope that helps.

  • Can't increase memory allocation

    For a previous question it was recommended that I allocate more memory to an application. However, when I attempt to do that with Get Info, I only get the options of "General Information" or "Sharing". "Memory" is never listed. Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?

    Under General Information, check what the file's kind is listed as; if it is 'application program package', control-click it and choose Show Package Contents. Open the folder Contents and then MacOSClassic, or MacOS if there isn't a MacOSClassic folder. Inside this folder, locate the application and increase the memory allocation.

  • Memory allocation much more than size of table TST03

    Hi all,
    I found a strange situation, in our system, memory allocation in SP12 shows 2GB is used in DB side, but when I go to transaction DB02 to check the table TST03, it only has 50MB. Our parameter rspo/store_location is already set to 'db'.
    System environment is: ECC6 running on AIX 53/Oracle 10g, 64bit.
    In my opinion, temse data will be stored in TST03, so I think TST03 size should be larger than memory allocation result in SP12.

    Nice question, really made me think. I just checked, in the newer SAP versions, TST03 has a BLOB column, in the older versions there was a LONG RAW col.
    I bet you have the BLOB (ECC6), you can check in sqlplus:

  • Cluster memory allocation

    Hello,
    I have a beginner's question: I have a large number of variables I need  to pass to a function. Will there be a difference in memory use if I pass them directly compared to if I bundle them to a cluster and pass the cluster to the function and unbundle it inside?
    I tried to read online posts, and some say that cluster is like a struct... does it mean that bundling variables to cluster creates new memory locations for each variable, with overhead? My application refuses to run already ("Not enough memory") so if cluster creates new memory allocations, it's critical that I know it...

    Hi, Norbert, you're right (as usual).
    The only small thing about Shift Registers (vs AutoIndex)... Let's say, we have pretty big array (nearby memory limit), which should be computed inside of loop.
    Now we have two possibilities: a) using AutoIndex tunnel, or b) using "preallocated" array and Shift Register. Something like that:
    The method b) with preallocated array is "more understandable" for me also from the "traditional programming" point of view. Continuous memory allocated (like with malloc), then Shift Register acts as pointer, and we performing elements replacement step by step.
    The method a) theoretically should work slow, because new elementh added to the array at each iteration (which caused memory reallocation every time), but it seems to be that LabVIEW intelligent enough for memory allocation before looping, and not during looping. And AutoIndex is faster than Shift Register in this case.
    But it looks completely other with while loops:
    Now array cannot be preallocated with AutoIndex, because total amount of iterations is unknown, and this caused big performance penalties (at least at first run). So, here Shift Register is preferred. What is funny - at second run the Method a) will be faster than method b) (looks like internal LabVIEW cache), but when total amount of iterations will be changed, then it will be slow again.
    And finally For Loop with Conditional Terminal vs While Loop:
    The total amount of iterations is unknown in both cases, but For Loop still fast because memory preallocated before iterations (created Array will be "trimmed" if loop will be breaked with condition).
    It means, that sometimes (but not always) AutoIndex is more preferred than ShiftRegister.

  • The buffer manager failed a memory allocation call for 10485760 bytes

    I have a for each loop container which executes for each row in the recordset destination.
    In the for each loop container i have a dataflow task where in source is a oracle server and it performs two ookups before inserting the data into the destination.
    There are around 270k records coming from source...that means and around when 38k records are inserted in the destination the packages stops its execution and it says "The buffer manager failed a memory allocation call for 10485760 bytes".
    Can anyone help me in fixing this issue??

    According to your description, when you execute the SSIS package, you got the error message: "The buffer manager failed a memory allocation call for 10485760 bytes".
    According to the error message, the machine has run out of physical memory (i.e. RAM) and is unable to swap out to hard disk. To troubleshoot the problem, please pay attention to these points:
    Add more physical memory to the computer.
    If you are running the SSIS  package on a computer that is running an instance of SQL Server, when you run the package, set the Maximum server memory option for the SQL Server instance to a smaller value. This behavior increases available memory.
    Exit applications that consume lots of memory when you run the SSIS package that contains dataflow tasks.
    Run the SSIS package and the dataflow tasks in series instead of in parallel to decrease memory usage.

  • Free Stmt Handle NOT release Memory allocated inDefineByPos[LongRaw]

    My Question is : Why Free Stmt Handle does not release the memory OCI allocated during OCIDefineByPos for data type "Long Raw"
    Please notice the Bold Fonts in the dtrace logging. Ptr is the pointer returned by malloc. Size is the memory size allocated.
    I use OCI to fetch records, each round I will fetch 1000 records. I found memory increase round by round. So I use dtrace to probe the memory malloc/free. At the end of each round, I will free the handle of SQL Statement. According the documentation, all the sub handles belongs to stmt handle should be free also. But I noticed that memory allocated during DefinebyPos for LongRaw did not get released.
    1. The SQL Send to DB each round is the same.
    2. I do the "Define" each round. So It's actually a "RE-Define" each round.
    The length of Long Raw is 512K. Here's the dtrace result when I call the OCIDefineByPos. There's a 2MB memory allocated, I don't know the reason.

    Assumption : You are using OCIHandleFree((dvoid*)DBctx->stmthp,(ub4)OCI_HTYPE_STMT);
    There are two scenarios here the LONG Raw mapping and release of memory.
    Unlike the other data types LONG Raw memory mapping is different since the data type requires more memory chunks.

    Since from the above statement it clear that free is called . Hence there may be chance in other area of the code I suspect the memory leak is (Like native storage).
    Moreover the standard OS behavior is that it will not release the Heap/Stack until the process is complete even the free() is called by the process. This is for performance on memory management.Having said that it should not increase the memory drastically when not required.

    from the above two form of coding which one is advicible and gives good performance.
    what will happen when i execute str.toLowerCase( ).indexOf("ram", 0);, i mean wthether i will do the lowercase conversion in same memory location or create temporary memory area.

  • Cache Memory Allocator \ Short Term Memory Allocator Issues

    Hi all
    I have a number of identically configured (High School) Servers which are giving me the same memory errors (some more frequently than others) and I've run out of ideas.
    They are all HP Proliant DL360 G6 Servers, NetWare 6.5 sp8 with eDir 8.8 sp5.
    The error messages are :
    "Cache memory allocator out of available memory." followed by "Short term memory allocator is out of memory. xxx attempts to get more memory failed. request size in bytes xxxxxxxx from Module SWEEP.NLM"
    The module referred to is always "SWEEP.NLM" (Sophos Anti-virus). A Server reset solves the problem but it is normally back within a month.
    I've posted below a config.txt and segstats.txt from one of the servers.
    I would be grateful if someone could help me with this as it's now becoming a 'headache'.

    Somewhat. From the time of day, and the loading of commvault modules
    inbetween, this looks like a combined backup / AV scan issue. The
    requests of Sophos are comparably big in size, and they vary a lot. That
    will lead to fragmentation of your memory, until the memory can't be
    allocated in one chunk any more. It also *seems* as if Sophos actually
    scans the data while it gets backed up. That is *bad*.

    But I am still not sure about the exact root cause is as
    1.The GET/GETNEXT / GET BULK messages from SNMP Manager (Here, IBM Tivoli Netcool  ) uses default SNMP Port 161 which is
       UDP and not TCP
    2. If its ICMP Polling failure from IBM Tivoli Netcool , ICMP is Protocol Number 1 in Internet Layer of TCP/IP Protocol Suite  and TCP is Protocol                 Number 6 in the Transport Layer of TCP/IP Protocol Suite .
    So I am still not sure how TCP Protocol Process Failure could have caused ICMP Timeout . Please help !
    Could you please help me on what TCP Protocol Process handles in a Cisco Switch ?

    2. If its ICMP Polling failure from IBM Tivoli Netcool , ICMP is Protocol Number 1 in Internet Layer of TCP/IP Protocol Suite  and TCP is Protocol                 Number 6 in the Transport Layer of TCP/IP Protocol Suite .
    So I am still not sure how TCP Protocol Process Failure could have caused ICMP Timeout . Please help !

    1.)If i am using the continuous output mode.and the size of generated data is less than 32 MB.If i want to preload the memory,what should i do?I want that first of all i load all my data to onboard memory & then i want to make start the transfer between 6534 & peripheral.Is it possible?As per me it should be.Plz tell me how should i do this?I think that in normal procedure the transfer between 6534-peripheral & outputting data from pc buffer to onboard memory works parallely.But i don't want this.Is it poss

    (2).Similarly in finite input operation(pattern I/O) is it possible to preload the memory and then i read it?Because i think that the PC memory will be loaded automatically when 6534 acquires the data and then when we use DIO read vi the pc buffer data will be transferred to application buffer.If this is true,i do not want this.Is it possible?
    (3) One more question is there if i am using normal operation onboard memory will be used bydefault right?Now if i want to use DMA and if i have data of 512 bytes to acquire.How will it work and how should i do it?Please tell me the sequence of operations.As per my knowledge in normal DMA operation we have 32 Bytes FIFO is there so after acquisition of 32 bytes only i can read it.How it will known to me that 32 bytes acquisition is complete?Next,If i want to acquire each byte separately using DMA interrupts what should i do?Provide me the name of sourse from which i can get details about onboard memory & DMA process of 6534 specifically

    Hi Vishal,
    I'll try to answer your questions as best I can.
    1) It is definitely possible to preload data to the 32MB memory (per group) and start the acquisition after you have preloaded the memory. There are example programs on ni.com/support under Example Code for pattern generation and the 6534 that demonstrate which functions to use for this. Also, if your PC memory buffer is less than 32MB, it will automatically be loaded to the card. If you are in continuous mode however, you can choose to loop using the on-board memory or you can constantly be reading the PC memory buffer as you update it with your application environment.
    2) Yes, your data will automatically be loaded into the card's onboard memory. It will however be transferred as quickly as possible to the DMA FIFO on the card and then transferred to the PC memory buffer through DMA. It is not going to wait until the whole onboard memory is filled before it transfers. It will transfer throughout the acquisition process.
    3) Vishal, searching the example programs will give you many of the details of programming this type of application. I don't know you application software so I can't give you the exact functions but it is easiest to look at the examples on the net (or the shipping examples with your software). Now if you are acquiring 512 bytes of data, you will start to fill your onboard memory and at the same time, data will be sent to the DMA FIFO. When the FIFO is ready to send data to the PC memory buffer, it will (the exact algorithm is dependent on many things regarding how large the DMA packet is etc.).
    4) If I understand you correctly, you want to know if you waste the other 6 bits if you only need to acquire on 10 lines. The answer to this is Yes. Although you are only acquiring 10 bits, it is acquired as a complete word (16bits) and packed and sent using DMA. You application software (NI-DAQ driver) will filter out the last 6 bits of non-data.

  • Memory allocation in CS 5.5

    First time to the forum and a relatively new user in AE.
    Here's my error message:
    "Memory allocation of 9.2 GB exceeds internal limits. Decrease the memory requirements for the rendering of this frame (12802). For more info: www.adobe/com/go/learn_ae_mem"
    So here's where the confusion sets in:
    a) I've gone through the forums and tweaked the multiprocessing settings... still get the same error.
    b) I've changed the color bit depth to 8 (mentioned in another posting)
    My comp is a full HD animation simulating a walk through a hallway. There's roughly 14 elements in the composition and the camera movement is a pan in. 
    I hope this is enough information to get the ball rolling. If more info is needed, I'll do my best to get you what you need.

    Below are screen shots of the aforementioned settings. I receive the error as I scrub to 00;00;20 on the composition. The message displays as a large .jpg file begins to rotate out and another .jpg file rotates in. I've used a camera to pan in on this elements' transitions but am not using any effects directly. I hope this helps!
