Solaris network boot - a20 enable failed

i am trying to install solaris 10 x64 on a HP proliant blade HP bl45p.
It only supports PXE boot and for that i have setup a PXE server that assigns a DHCP address to my blade. The blade gets the IP and start to net boot but fails giving error
A20 enable failed
<hangs here>
looks like there is a patch to solve this problem butnot sure how to put that patch to my cd image on the PXE server.
any views on this??

Which version of Solaris x86 are you installing? This isn't the GRUB based
S10 1/2006 release, correct?
I guess that HP proliant blade HP bl45p doesn't have a PS/2 keyboard controller
any more (legacy free pc), and fails for a similar reason that GRUB doesn't start
on Intel iMacs: the boot code tries to use the non-existant keyboard controller to
toggle the gate A20, and fails:
http://www.opensolaris.org/jive/message.jspa?messageID=31818#31818
OTOH, I do see a bug report filed against the old boostrap loader boot.bin
http://bugs.opensolaris.org/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6230381
and this appears to be fixed in S10 1/2006 . If you haven't tried S10 1/2006...
it might work better on this HP blade hardware.
BTW, you probably have to use a serial console, otherwise it will hang once
again in multiboot, when no i8042 ps/2 keyboard controller is present:

On an additional note, I've purchased a wireless router and everything connected on the first attempt.  It just vexes me that the built-in wireless isn't working as a router.  Is this another example of "Mac only plays with Mac"?

  • JumpStart Network Boot problem

Network boot of Ultra 10 test machine from JS environment on a RedHat FC3 box all works perfectly with a Solaris 9 (0404) kernel and network boot directory structure.
When attempting jumpstart with a Solaris 10 FCS kernel and jumpstart environment, after
    boot net:dhcp - install
I see usual boot device stuff, then the tftp transfer of
    38600
    and then
    Requesting Ethernet address for IP.AD.DR.ES
boot: failed to allocate 8192 bytes from scratch memory
panic - boot: boot: scratch memory overflow
    Program terminated
    ok
All the refs I can find to the scratch memory overflow problem suggest a problem back in the days of a Solaris 8 kernel that a later patch solved anyway.
Firstly, has anyone one else seen similar errors to mine with a Sol10 JS ?
Secondly, has anyone any other ideas as to what's going on here (other than the unlikely chance that I have a Solaris 8 kernel inside my Sol10 JS environment !!)

This is an old thread, but I found it along my searches for the same issue - only one Sun box, and no CD/DVDROM.
I had exactly the same setup - FC3 jumpstart server which worked fine for Sol9, but failed with Sol10. The Sol10 NFSv4 client has difficulties during install talking to the Linux NFS server. One can work out the issues, installing NFSv4 - see http://www.citi.umich.edu/projects/nfsv4/linux/ - and fixing a few other problems - see http://www.tzone.org/~vandry/howto/solaris10-install-from-linux.html - or move to a FreeBSD or NetBSD jumpstart server.
I wrote a little how-to on setting up a FreeBSD jumpstart server for Solaris 10 which can be found at http://www.pbandjelly.org/item/38
I hope this can help out those people trying to find a solution in setting up their Sun with jumpstart.
    Kind Regards,
    Michael

  • Xp/solaris dual boot bug

    Hello
I have a 80gb hard disk set up with win xp pro along
with a 25gb unformated partition. Recently I installed
    solaris 10 x86 to the 25gb partition from sun's
website. the installation setup automatically selected
the 25 gb space. all seemed to be working fine. the
only problem was after installation solaris boot
manager selected solaris automatically if no selection
of win xp was made within 30 seconds. since i needed
xp pro as a default i used the utility OSBS (boot.exe
and osbs135). as instructed i have entered the saved
solaris.bin from mbr to xp root and have entered
corresponding entry in win.ini file. the new boot
manager enables xp selection by default, xp pro boots
all fine but if i select solaris nothing happens
    except a blinking cursor.
It seems to me that solaris partition is all fine and
healthy as I added few packages from solaris
installation cd few days back. Only problem is i m
unable to boot from it with the OSBS boot manager.
Is this a known problem?? or is there any better boot
    manager?
Any advice/suggestion will be highly appreciated.
    Many thanks

Hi, I am not sure if this would work but it might. First of all do you know if you delete the solaris partition then wouldn't it go back to booting to Windows? Just wondering about that. Well anyways here is my proposed solution that enables booting Solaris from Windows XP boot menu. Actually wait do you have a floppy drive on your laptop or a portable one. Because this solution requires that. Reply if you have one.

When I type metastat, I get okay status in all mirrors and submirrors. Metadb also returns no errors.
Yet I have seen similar boot messages in failed Solaris 9 servers. What can you tell me regarding these messages.
Should they be the cause for worry or any proactive action?
I have taken a full flar backup. What should I tell to my client regarding these messages.
    Thank you

    Hi,
    You can ignore them.
    http://sunsolve.sun.com/search/document.do?assetkey=1-72-1007629.1-1
These are not errors. These are informational (NOTICE) messages
telling you that the driver underlying your metadevices does not
support the B_FAILFAST option and, as a result, that capability will
not be active for speedier recovery. There is no way to disable these
    messages.

  • Network Boot (Rescue Mode)

I need to rescue a OL5 VM guest the other day and discovered you can Network boot into rescue mode by using the following arguments in the boot string.
    --args rescue http://server/pathtodistribution
Just thought I would share. You could always just mount the virtual disk on another host but to me... this is simpler and faster.

I've added extended logging to the console, so there are a few more things to show the errors:

  • Can't open TCP connection when two network adapter are enabled

    Hi all,
I've an applicaiton that connect using "TCP Open Connection". The applicaiton is running on a computer have two network adapters configured to be on two different network.
When I start the application, if both network adapters are enabled, connection is not created (timeout). When I disable the network adapter which is not configured for the network I need, connection is succesfull.
    - How can I choose which adapter to use to open the connection, as LabView seems enable to select the good one.
    - Or I can I disable a network adapter (just for the connection time)
I'm using LabView 8.5 Full on Windows XP.
    Thanks for your help

This is generally a routing issue. The OS will route connections to your primary network if it is not a direct route. For example, one network is 10.3.4.x (primary network) and the other is 192.168.1.x.with a subnet of 255.255.255.0. Now, let's say you want to reach a device with an 192.168.2.x address. The OS will try to route this through the primary network but is has no route to reach the 192.168.2.x subnet. Therefore your connection fails. You can add a permanent route to your computer to force specific address ranges to specific NICs. Use the ROUTE ADD command which is part of the OS. If you are trying to reach the computer using a name instead of the IP address the issue is basically the same but a but more challenging to resolve. The OS will do th elookup on your defined DNS servers. They generally do not have knowledge of local private networks and therefore can't resolve the name. In this case you need to create a more involved network infrastructure to update the name server. Probably not something that is feasible to do.

  • RV180 PPPoE Enable Failed

    Hi,
I am connecting the RV180 to a Huawei Echolife HG850a ONT via PPPoE, dynamic IP address from ISP.
    However, error message shows:
Fri Apr 19 02:54:15 2013(UTC) [rv180][System][NONE] pppoeMultipleEnableDisable: pppoe enable failed
Fri Apr 19 02:55:16 2013(UTC) [rv180][System][NONE] pppoeMultipleEnableDisable: pppoe enable failed
I am not able to get the RV180 to logon via PPPoE and get its dynamic IP.
    Firmware is version 1.0.2.6,
tried resetting to factory defaults, still the same.
    thanks.

Let me explain a bit more about my case here.
My ISP is Telekom Malaysia and Service is Unifi - Fiber-To-The-Home (FTTH).
The service is "terminated" by a Huawei HG850A Optical Network Terminator (ONT).
The ONT then needs to be connected to a 802.1Q VLAN capable PPPoE router to split VLAN ports 500 and 600. 500 for Internet stream and 600 for IPTV stream.
Our ISP provides us with a dlink DIR-615 router that will work fine with the above setup.
But that Dlink DIR615 is not enough as I would like to connect to other site offices with cisco VPN, namely using Cisco RV042, RV082.
So I need to know what is wrong with the RV180 or is it a problem with my configuration.
Other people from malaysia have been configuring their other routers with no problem as below:

    Hi Ranjith,
Can you try the following commands on your router and see if it helps:
    configmemory-size iomem 5
If it doesn't and that you are sure you have enough memory on your router to support WAAS Express, I would advise you to open a TAC case to have this investigated in depth.

  • Boot camp often fails to boot - fix?

Boot Camp often fails to boot at all, leaving the iMac dead at the bootloader screen. Have to force shutdown by holding down power button. Full hardware test declared the hardware 100% functional. Disk Utility and chkdsk sees nothing but fire. This is intermitent/random and it proved impossible to "force" it's occurance. It happen when it darn well please?
First occurance goes back to late July 2011, a few days after a major thunder storm that caused pulsing power blackouts (as in, very short bursts - like turning off the power then immediately flipping it back on - too quick to actually shut the computer down). Surely, this must be the source of the issue? Right? Alas it doesn't adds up. Power supply of this house is very stable and reliable. Power fluctuations are unhearded of. It's also connected to a surge protected outlet. The system itself, in Mac or Win, is flat out stable. It does not freeze out of the blue like what a damaged power supply would cause. It only ever freeze upon choosing a partition via the boot camp interface.
Further observation as compared to normal boot procedure: Upon selection of the Windows partition, the LED on the USB mouse turns off then back on again a short moment later. Windows loads up normally. When the crash occurs, the LED never turn back on. It's just dead right there and then.
What's going on and what can I do to fix this? It feels like some hardware initialisation fails for some reasons. It's ough to be around the USB systems itself but what do I know anyway?
P.S.: Please, don't mention the dreaded format and re-install. It's a 20 hours job. I'm not going there. ty

Why not upgrade the surge protector to a UPS? good units are very affordable.
Put all your sensitive equipment like modem/router, computer, electronics running off UPS.

Well, sometimes if you don't have backups, and refuse to do what you may need to....
There are troubleshoolting tips and faqs I'm sure on the 'net.
Starting with Windows 7 DVD for one
Even OS X won't survive with forced (hard) shutdowns.
If it only happens in Windows, and you were running OS X when the outage occurred...
USB devices and cables can be hard to ID but swapping cables and stuff helps.
As for Disk Utility, it does not look at drive sectors or files for issues.
If you really want to scan a hard drive, use the vendor's own Linux or Windows utiilty to recertify the sectors.
If you haven't done any deep cleaning of files, registry, even uninstall and reinstall components.
I just did a reinstall. Partially to be a test run for when I have to install Windows 8 next week, also to clear up a problem I had, possibly a rogue web site using a rootkit to hide files and icons and programs disappeared and icons became generic. So yes I don't take it lightly, but the new install runs much much better (over two years since last install).
AHT is not a 100% reliable at finding everything, only what it actually is designed or suppose to look for.
A semi-loose DIMM or faulty can be enough, and not likely AHT or Memtest will find it, but Windows does tend to spot a problem with RAM during installs.
    CCleaner 3.x
    Driver Sweeper 3.x
START: run %TEMP% - Select All and send to Recycle
Lion Recovery - show all hidden partitions and check health of all, hidden debug menu in Disk Utility can be enabled in command line
Some partitions (GPT, EFI, System, Volume Information Block) are only tested during format where each sector does get a thorough check for errors because they can't be mapped out later. When you do chkdsk etc you only test user partition areas and not the 'entire' drive, unless doing a full initialization. And GPT requires that the VIB and also the backup VIB both be error free - in the past the backup VIB if it failed was "optional" though, it is not now.
If you clone OS X then it is easy to move it to another drive and also to do full initialization and restore. If 3 days of your time isn't an option maybe time to invest in program(s) and methods that can backup and restore.
Trying to find the needle in haystack that you have limped along with I guess since July (since installing Lion? maybe ?) can take 3 days probably, unless you are lucky enough to replace a mouse or cable on first step and it all goes away (hit the lottery or get hit by lightning odds)

  • Is PXE network booting supported on 875p Neo FIS2R?

    Hi all,
I have spent a full day trying to get my computer to boot via PXE from a remote server.  My computer is equipped with an MSI 875p Neo FIS2R motherboard.
    relevant stats are as follows:
    Motherboard: MSI 875p Neo FIS2R
Ethernet Card: Integrated on Motherboard (Intel 82547EI (CSA Interface Gigabit LAN))
The PXE server to which I am trying to connect is running Windows 2000 Server and is configured with Windows Remote Installation Service.  The server has been tested with another pxe client (my laptop) and I am able to boot over the network succesfully.  It looks like everything is configured properly on the server side.
I am using the msi motherboard's Intel 82547EI integrated ethernet controller when attempting to connect to the server.  I do not have another PCI ethernet controller that I can try as an alternative.
I could not find any mention of network booting in the boot sequence section of the BIOS configuration, nor anywhere else in the BIOS settings.  I have made sure the integrated ethernet controller is enabled in the BIOS.
I also upgraded the BIOS to the most recent version (2.4) but there is still no sign of any 'network boot' settings in the boot sequence nor anywhere else in the BIOS settings.
See the following webpage for the BIOS versions:
    http://www.msicomputer.com/support/bios_result.asp?platform=Intel&model=875P%20Neo-LSR/FIS2R%20(MS-6758%20PCBv1)&newsearch=1
Note that BIOS version 2.2 specifically mentions:
"This BIOS fixes the following problems of the previous version:
    - System cannot login to PXE server without floppy drive installed."
This seems to suggest that the motherboard supports PXE.  While I do not have a floppy drive installed on my machine, this BIOS update indicates that a lack of a floppy drive should not pose a problem.
When booting the computer I am presented with a few keystroke options, one of which is to press F12 for a 'Network Boot'.  After pressing F12 I receive no indication that the computer is attempting to contact a PXE server and the computer boots into Windows XP as usual.
I have searched the MSI forums and have yet to come across a solution.  Signs point to there being PXE support but I must be missing something.  Can anyone give me any definitive answers here?  Thanks in advance.

I've since been in contact with MSI technical support.  Oddly they cannot seem give me a definitive answer on the support of PXE in MSI motherboards so again I'm turning to you guys.  I'm really hoping someone out there has some experience with PXE and any sort of MSI motherboard.  Surely someone must have run into this issue before.  Anyone?  Anyone at all?

Attempting to connect my MacBook to my 4s iPhone.  I have had them connected in the past to use the "hands off" function. Today it tells me "network unavailable"  make sure network access is enabled.  I don't know what to do. I love the hands off feature as my iPhone is never with me when on my mac! I'm not sure what to do.  Both are "discoverable" via bluetooth and show up on each device but when I try to connect it says "network unavailable".  HELP!

An iPhone will not pair via Bluetooth to a computer (Mac or Windows) except for personal hotspot and then only if your cellular plan supports it. https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-7722
If you are attempting to use Handoff/Continuity, that does involve Bluetooth but the devices are NOT paired; Bluetooth just needs to be on and the devices in range of each other. The following may help with Handoff/Continuity issues: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5458
