Solaris never booted to gui login screen

I have made a new installation of solaris 10 on HP xw8600 workstation. After selecting from grub the top most choice which normally yields a gui login screen, the pc is restarted.
Some say it is due to mainboard thermal issues where solaris shuts down/restarts for safety (physically I don't think there is any thermal problem).
Is/are there any switch or parameters for some safe mode (not the command line, but the gui).
Or what may be the problem?
Thanks,

Ok, I have managed to solve my problem myself:
first go through this thread:
http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5224214
then I applied these patches and off it goes now I have a 64 bit running Solaris10
First: Patch no: 125370-06, fault manager
Second: Patch no: 127112-08, kernel patch
(I dont know where the links are I followed the update manager in solaris)
good luck,

    Lao Bo,
yes, you can locate and copy a file from your HD to a USB key using UNIX commands. If you know the exact name of the file which you’re trying to locate, try this:
    find / -iname filename -print
This command will search your entire internal disk for the particular filename. If you know that it’s within a particular user account, then you can save search time with this variation:
    find /Users/username -iname filename -print
Either variation of this command will print all files found which have the given filename. Presuming that you’re able to identify the correct file, you can copy it to a USB key using the command
    cp -p filename_returned_by_find /Volumes/USB_volume
If you’re not sure which volume name your USB key has, this command will show you what the possibilities are:
    ls /Volumes
Please let me know if you have any trouble with these commands.

Win 7/Z580: Black screen on boot up, before login screen?
    =======================================
I find some interesting posting in this forum. Thanks for keeping this forum to help windows/Lenovo community. I like to pick up the brain of this forum to resolve the black screen issue. I am not sure, whether it caused by virus. I use Microsoft Security Essentials. I am not able to run this in command prompt.
I started my laptop this morning & login screen showed up. Once I entered my login credentials, I heard the sound that usually plays once a login is successful, but I ended up with a black screen. After this occurred, I had to hold down the power button to manually shut down the computer. Once I started it up again, I was prompted to do a system repair, which eventually ended up with all successful outcomes, but I now have a black screen with a cursor before the login screen now. I have no idea what caused this to happen. My laptop is a Lenovo Ideapad Model Z580 (500 GB HD, 6GB RAM).
I am not able to get into safe mode or any other mode, which all leads to a black screen described above. I am able to use the "Repair Your computer" tools after pressing F8 during booting only . All other options leads to Black screen with cursor in the middle
Last Known Good Configuration leads to same
Enable Low Resolution Video (640x480) leads to same My Z580 is not responding to CTRL+ALT+DEL Windows Logo keys as well.
**** I tried SAFE Mode. It loaded couple of drivers and paused at CLASSPNP.SYS load. It went to Black screen with cursor at center.
I am able to invoke control pannel from Command prompt of working PC by typing control.
Z580 PC is not responding to control from command prompt (under Repair Your computer)  either.
Z580 is able to use the "Repair Your computer" tools after pressing F8 during booting .
Under local user login it provided Start Repair option. As I pick this option, I got the following. Problem signature
    Startup repair offline
    1 - 6.1.7600.16385
    2 -

    7 - NoRootCause
    os v - 6.1.7600.2.1.0.2561
    locale id – 1033
Under Admin user login, it provided system recovery options. It is not picking up the recovery point created a while ago.
Windows Memory Diagnostics is not launching and shows a black screen without cursor.
I am able to get into command prompt. I tried the following there.
I am not able to run cmd as admin

I did findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >sfcdetails.txt I will be glad to attach the zip file that contain CBS.LOG & [SR] tag extract (xxx.txt).
I did not any find ERRORS there, SFC ended with message saying "found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them" . It is misleading. There is no [SR] tag pointing to corrupt files. Does SFC through false positive like this?

  • Computer does not boot up to Login screen w/Safe Mode/Last Known Conf

    Hi, Microsoft Community
I got a major issue with my PC... I left my PC running and suddenly had a memory dump and computer shuts down and after that it keeps reseting. It doesn't load up to the login screen only the windows loading after that it resets again and again.
At first I thought its a RAM issue so I took out the 2 RAM sticks, changed them up plugged one in and so on. Still no go.
    I tried the following:
    Safe Mode
    Last Known Configuration
    Repair your computer
    Took out the Graphics Card
    Reseted BIOS (CMOS)
I got 3 different BSOD Codes:
    0x0000007B (0xFFFFF880009A998, 0xFFFFFFFFC000000E, 0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000)

I only got these BSOD when I've did "Disable automatic restart on system failure"
I do not have a repair disk or windows disc since I lost them along with my other discs when building the PC.
Please Help. Any help is grateful, Thank you! :(
EDIT: Windows 7 Ultimate, 3.3GHz AMD Bulldozer, 8GB RAM, AMD 7770 GPU

    Hi,
According to your description, the situation now is that you're unable to boot up the system and we're unable to get the dump file to make a further analysis. Did you get any other additional error messages when booting the system?
System fails after several attempts, so you might need a external media to recovery the system, or do a reinstallation, you can also take the PC to the vender if it is under guarantee in case it might be related with some hardware issues.

  • Black screen after boot but before login screen

    Hi,
I have a windows server 2012 machine running ADDS, recently I installed new hardware in to the machine but when I turned the server on windows would not fully load, in Safe Mode nor normally. So I removed the hardware I had installed but it

I don't see 2012 R2 listed but you'll surely want the proliant support pack installed.

  • Solaris 10 boot oddity

I'm pretty new to Solaris, but I have a pretty solid background in unixy/linuxy type OSes. I've been getting into Java lately so I figured I might as well install Solaris just cuz'. So I have my root account, and my "poweruser" account that's simply a non-root admin type account. The thing is, when it boots up Solaris insists on setting the login screen to the world's biggest possible resolution, which in VMware is more of an irritation than anything else because both accounts of the system run in 1280x800. How on earth do I get the login screen to load up into 1280x800 and not....what appears to be 1600x1200?
    Thanks

I think you are right about doing the "exclude", but I couldn't decipher the information from that link... Notebook in question is a "Dell Latitude E6410" if that helps.
I got a bit more information from logging Re: Boot hang - Can I stop it looking for the wireless lan? but missed the line that probably contains the driver name!

  • Login Screen (Unwanted Information)

I read an article about how to display such items as the date and time on your login screen, and found it interesting so I tried it by typing: "defaults write /Library/Preferences/com/apple/loginwindow AdminHostInfo Time" into terminal, but I can't seem to figure out how to undo this. When I boot to the login screen, it now display the current date and time. (I wouldn't mind it displaying the date only, but the time is just annoying) Please help me go back to the default setting for this function.
iMac (Intel Core Duo)   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Hi, Etown88.
    You've learned two important lessons:
    1. Undocumented features are undocumented for a reason.
    2. Never try "tricks" you read in magazines or on the Web unless they also clearly specify how to undo the trick. In fact, you should skip tricks like this: review Lesson 1 above.
The specific "trick" you cite was in Macworld recently and can be found on their web site here and here, the latter under the heading "Make your login window informative".
You'll also note at the end of the second article that it contains a correction: sometimes tricks have typos that can really ruin your day.
The "trick" probably originated as a post on the Mac OS X Hints site since the column was written by Rob Griffiths who runs that site.
To "undo" this, simply specify HostName, which is the default:
    defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow AdminHostInfo HostName
This is stated in the articles cited above, but one has to realize it as its stated subtly, e.g."• HostName to show the default display"Good luck!

  • Login screen on MacBook Pro Retina (Late 2013) with enabled File Vault is extremely slow (suttering)

    Hi
I have a MacBook Pro Retina (Late 2013) with enabled File Vault on OS X Mavericks. When I boot up the mac freshly it takes quite long to get to the initial login screen (which as I understand is a pre-boot login provided by the recovery partition if File Vault is enabled). However, what is even more bothering me is that once I get to this screen, the whole UI is behaving extremely slow. The mouse makes jumps of a few inches on the screen and the animations (e.g. if you click a user and then an animation shows the password entry field) are running in slow motion and only update every few seconds. Typing the password afterwards runs smothly again (altought for example moving the mouse at this point still behaves as described before). After loggin in to the account OS X runs fine without any hicks. Can anyone give me a hit what this could be and how I could resolve this?
    This has already been done:
    Reset PRAM
Boot into recovery partition and run repaired disk and disk permissions
Run all OS X maintenance operations and cleared caches using OnyX
What I could imagine is that somehow the recovery partition is damaged (which as I understand is used to boot to the login screen if File Vault is enabled).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Chris

Just ordered a Retina MacBook Pro11,2 (mid-2014 15", 2.2GHz Intel Core i7, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, OSX 10.9.4 Pre-installed - Build 13E28)  and have the exact same issue.  The first thing I did when i booted it for the first time was enable FileValut2 and encrypt the disk.  Though I failed to notice this behavior prior to encrypting the disk, the stuttering/lag happens without fail every time I have logged in from a cold boot, locked screen or sleep. Additionally I have noticed the same stuttering behavior when switching tabs on various built-in OSX applications such as the tabs on the About This Mac > More Info.... (System Information) dialog for example, and similarly other dialogs that experience this behavior of resizing when switching tabs. I was running no other software than About This Mac > More Info ... (System Information) and OSX 10.9.4 itself.  The issue happens without fail with and without a USB mouse plugged in.
I am really glad to have found this thread and with such recent posts.  I'd love to find out that this is just a software bug that will be fixed when OSX 10.10 "Yosemite" is released.  If not, I hope the cause of this bug is determined soon so I can still exchange or have it repaired.
Migflono and Matthew, would you be able to post your hardware specs for comparison?

Hi, I downloaded Skype on my MacBook Air for the first time over the weekend. Intially it worked fine, however now I just get a blank Skype page with a line that goes round and round in circles and never gets to a login screen. I've tried restarting my computer, deleting and reinstalling Skype, changing ports, turning off my firewall, allowing applications from anyone, multiple restarts of the app and even waiting patiently and nothing seems to work!
Does anyone know how I can fix this? Please help as I'd like to be able to use Skype on my computer.

  • TS1541 10.6.8 login screen blocked

    Hi,
    MbPro, 10.6.8 Snow Leopard -
When I boot up, my login screen (with three accounts on it you can choose one of three I mean) is totally blocked. I can move the arrow and click on my login name but nothing happens, it doesnt "move the login name left/up" to show me the password field so I can get on with typing my password. It just sits there, no matter where I click with the trackpad, left button right button or anywhere, its blocked and will not show the password field so I can get on with logging in.
If I leave the mouse over my login name a popup tho does appear telling me Im about to click on my name.
Then you let it sit there for 5-10 Minutes and all of a sudden it starts working; I can click on my login name and now I can type my password.
This now happens everytime I startup my Mac.
    Any ideas?
Repair permissions and check disk was okay, didnt solve the problem though...Im worried one day it will stop letting me in full stop...then what..
    Thanks for any tipps
    The Wumpus

    Thanks but....oh dont be fooled!
For me it always works with an attached Usb mouse.
I use that in work. With the mouse, it always works.
With the trackpad it doesnt..so Im not sure this is linked to you switching of your trackpad; I think with the mouse it will always work anyways. But having said all that,
How did you switch your trackpad "Off"? Did you rip it out of the keyboard and glue it back in?
Cant harm me trying that here....
    Thanks for letting me know

  • Just loaded Leopard-stuck at login screen

    Please help.
I have an imac less than a month old and I just loaded leopard and it boots to a login screen. When I login in it seems to start the login process and about 5 seconds later it takes me back to the login screen. Yep...I know my password. This process continues and the Imac will not boot pass the login screen. Help?

Hey great thanks. Ok. I tried that and successfully changed my password (by the way I didn't have a password--prior to my change) but the same thing happens. It starts the login process and sends me back to the login screen about 5 seconds later. Do you think the keychain needs to be reset as well? Do you (or anyone) know how to reset the keychain through command s?

  • Login screen locked up SOLVED

I've installed Arch a few times and it has been my only distro for the last two years and runs great on my main box and Thinkpad T61 laptop.
I've just tried to install first gnome and then kde on my partners T43 thinkpad which used to run Arch perfectly but on 1st boot now the login screen is locked up.
I cannot type or get a mouse pointer and can't ctrl-alt-backspace or ctrl-alt delete or ctrl-alt-f3 or anything.
Only thing is to switch off. The keyboard and mouse worked fine on a Mandriva install which I'm trying to replace with Arch.
Now i've got to a root prompt by putting a 1 at the end of the kernel line to go to single user mode.
I'm at a loss what to do next.
What can I check from this root prompt to get it sorted?
    Your help is appreciated
    Thanks
