Solaris Weblogic 8.1 Server - starting Weblogic as non-root user

Hello,
Currently we are starting weblogic 8.1 server as the root user, but would like to start as a non-root user.
(our unix team isn't too happy giving us, the dev team the root password!).
Is it possible to start Weblogic 8.1 on Solaris 8 without the root password?...If so, can you point me, where I can find more information in the documentation, please.
thanx,
Vishwa

If you have managed to boot the server before in the past you should have a config.xml.booted file in your domain. Try using this to boot, if it works you can diff it with your possibly mashed config.xml to see what went wrong.

  • Cannot start X11 as non-root user

    Yes I know, there are about a billion threads about this issue, but I'm afraid none of them have helped me so far.
    So, basically as root I can startx just fine. But when I try to startx as my user "hb", I see the Nvidia logo and it jumps back to the console. It doesn't display any real errors, apart from some font and keyboard stuff, which isn't fatal to starting the X server as far as I know. The Xorg.0.log doesn't display any errors at all. So I really don't have a clue what the problem is.
    I've installed Arch Linux just a week ago on this laptop and I didn't have any problems whatsoever, but I've tried to reinstall 3 times today and X11 keeps refusing to work...
    I've used nvidia-xconfig to configure xorg.conf and I followed the wiki instructions (which worked for me the last time). But considering X11 works for root, the config file should be okay, right?

    I don't have a window manager installed yet. Seemed rather pointless when X wasn't working yet. The .xinitrc is there, but doesn't exec anything. But in the previous install I installed xfce4 and had .xinitrc do "exec xfce4-session", and the result was the same as now: X starts then jumps back to console.

  • [SOLVED] Xorg not starting on non-root user [My First Linux]

    Hello, I recently turned back to linux after digging up my old ASUS EEE 900a, which I messed up with partitioning fun after trying to cram Windows XP on it and etc. Anyways, I managed to fix it, and after Ubuntu being too big, I was turned on to Arch as a good distro, and I've been having a very good time setting everything up so far.
    Anyways: My issue arises after needing to use a different user in order to use Chrome. I created a new account and tried to run startx like I usually do. It spat out the usual few lines, but failed and gave me this log:

    I've tried looking for this problem elsewhere as it feels like such a newbie problem to have, but I have had difficulty. There are two errors in this log, I think, but they didn't mean much to me... Any help for a linux newbie? Thanks!
    EDIT: Solved; as pointed out below, I needed a window manager for a non-root user to use.

    Well, soon you'll have to try out one of the more minimal options, in which you don't use any desktop environment but instead you install your own window manager (openbox, dwm, i3, etc) and use small, dedicated programs.  Given your extreme space restrictions, I recommend going that route! But, take your time because that requires a bit of learning: you need to figure out which parts of a desktop environment you really need, then you need to learn the proper names for them so that you can search for information, then you need to start fiddling with configurations, etc.  Better first to make sure your first Arch Linux installation is up and running properly and to learn a bit about the system before entering that downward spiral.

  • Running VMware Server 2 services as a non-root user

    Hello,
    I have switched from VirtualBox to VMware Server 2 on my Arch64 server and the transition has been relatively painless. I am at the point now where I want to run VMware's services as a non-root user account (I have a service account called "svc-vmadmin" that I'd like to use). I'm generally not comfortable running services as root, but at the same time I'm conscious of the time and effort required vs. overall benefits.
    I've done the usual Google searches and even checked the VMware Server 2 user guide and the VMware community, but I can't find specific details on how to achieve this.
    Is this even plausible in a Linux environment? I used to run VMware Server 1 under the SYSTEM account on Windows Server, so I'm hopinga similar thing can be done on Arch.
    I would greatly appreciate any information or personal experience that fellow Archers can share.
    Thanks,
    Thom

    System services are handled by launchd.
    If you look in /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/ you'll see a plist file for each service including org.isc.named.plist, the plist for named.
    If you edit this file you'll see it's an XML document that describes the service and how the OS should handle it, including the part:
    <key>ProgramArguments</key>
    <array>
    <string>/usr/sbin/named</string>
    <string>-f</string>
    </array>
    Just append another entry in the array that says <string>-u nobody</string> (or whatever username you want to run as.

  • Non-root user can't start Apache on port 443

    Today I've been attempting to get SSL working for my Oracle Applications 11i (11.5.10.2) installation and I just hit a small problem. I've followed all of the Oracle literature I've come across, which instructed me to create a new (non-root) user to own the database tier and the applications tier. I've also followed the instructions for configuring SSL ([Doc 123718.1|https://metalink2.oracle.com/metalink/plsql/f?p=130:14:6976756808231635106::::p14_database_id,p14_docid,p14_show_header,p14_show_help,p14_black_frame,p14_font:NOT,123718.1,1,1,1,helvetica]) and the SSL wizard in OAM defaults to the standard HTTPS port (443). However, because 443 is a privileged port, a non-root user cannot bind to it. In other words, the Oracle literature itself has led me to an impossible situation. This is what I see in the Apache error log:
    [Fri May 15 15:05:03 2009] [crit] (13)Permission denied: make_sock: could not bind to port 443
    At this point, I see two choices:
    1. Run the application tier services as root.
    2. Change the SSL port to something greater than 1024 (i.e. 4443).
    I'm leaning towards option #2, since option #1 negates the advantage of using a non-root user to begin with. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Does Oracle have any recommendations for this scenario?

    Hi,
    You just need to start Apache as root (not all the application services). For Option 1, the application tier files should be owned by applmgr/oracle user (not root), and for Option 2, you do not need to change the port (though it is valid option). Just follow the steps in the following document.
    Note: 356080.1 - How to run Apache on Port 80 in Apps 11i
    https://metalink2.oracle.com/metalink/plsql/ml2_documents.showDocument?p_database_id=NOT&p_id=356080.1
    BTW, this is mentioned in the document "if you have chosen port 443 (or any port under 1024) for your SSL port, you will have to start Apache as root".
    Regards,
    Hussein

  • Trying to lock out Solaris 11 non-root users but not working-

    Hi,
    We are trying to lock out non-root user after 5 unsuccessful login attempts by editing the policy.conf file but it's not working..It's working in the global zone but not in the non-global zones. Is there something else we need to do?
    This is Solaris 11 with Solaris 11 NGZs.
    kind regards

    It works exactly the same way in the global and non global zone cases. This code is 100% userland so it doesn't mater if it is running
    in a global or non global zone.
    Note that you do need to configure policy.conf in both the global and non global zone.
    Are both configured similarly with respect to nameservices ?
    Currently we only support lock_after_retries for the local files nameservice.

  • How to login as a non root user into linux server after rebooting

    Hi,
    Even though it is not related to Oracle, but i assume that all you are aware about linux.
    I wrote a script to make DB up automatically when i reboot the server. But i have to login into the sever as the nonroot user instead of root user automatically.
    How can i do this?
    Thanks
    Mahi

    See "How do I get Oracle to automatically start when my server boots up?" in http://orafaq.com/faqunix.htm

  • Bash issue on solaris 8 ( Segmentation fault for non root users)

    Hi,
    This is solaris 8 on sparc and a NFS file server for the NIS+ environment. As supposed to be this file server is nis+ client.
    Now this issue happens only sometimes and goes away on its own but it did not this time.
    I connect to file server using ssh, system closes my session,
    this is ssh -vvv log , copied here : http://pastebin.ca/1633893Please note that my shell is /bin/bash. It worked 99% time but not now, nothing is changed on system.
    If I ssh root@fileserver then ssh connection works fine. root can also run bash command. and run other commands in bash
    For a normal user with csh if the user tries "bash" , then gets
    user@fileserver%> bash
    Segmentation Fault
    I am thinking this is somewhere related to rpc but I do not see any errors on nis+ server nor on fileserver.
    %>truss bash o/p is here :
    http://pastebin.ca/1633907Please let me know what is this issue related to. If by stopping/restarting a process helps that would be great.
    one more thing to note is, other nis+ clients can mount shares from this fileserver properly and authentication also works fine on them even for users with /bin/bash shell and bash does work manually also.
    If you need any other info, please let me know
    Please help!
    Thanks!

    Anyone any idea? I thought the truss o/p copied in pastebin might be very useful

  • Start SS 12 as non-root user

    Hi - I'm a reasonably experienced developer, but a Solaris and Sun Studio newbie.
    I have installed SS 12 onto a Solaris 10 box, and felt pleased, until I found it only ran as root.
    If I try $ sunstudio
    I get
    Validating NetBeans IDE at: "/opt/SUNWspro/../netbeans-5.5.1"
    Sun Studio is unable to find a supported version of the NetBeans IDE at the specified location.
    Sun Studio requires a NetBeans IDE version 5.5.1 with NetBeans C/C++ Development Pack version 5.5.1
    installed. Sun Studio looks for a valid NetBeans IDE installation in the following order:
    1) Location specified with --netbeanshome command line option
    2) At /opt/netbeans-5.5.1 location, if exists
    3) At /opt/SUNWspro/../netbeans-5.5.1 location, if exists
    4) At /opt/SUNWspro/../../netbeans-5.5.1 location, if exists
    Please run the System Preparation Tool (prepare_system), if available, to set up your environment.
    I don't get this as root, and I'm pretty sure the NetBeans is at /opt/netbeans-5.1.1
    (Oh yes - the prepare_system tool complains about 'patches' when run with the -C option, but running prepare_system -s patches doesn't seem to help.)
    Does anyone know exactly what SS is looking for here - it might help.
    And of course - does anyone know the problem?
    I'm using a Blade 2500 workstation, with SunOS 5.10 Generic_118833-33, and the SS 12 installation was from
    SunStudio12ml-solaris-sparc-200709-pkg.tar.bz2, installed as root.
    Thanks for your time.
    Jeff

    Hi Jeff,
    This is strange - usually "prepare_system" installs Netbeans, if it is missed.
    BTW, the default directory name is "/opt/netbeans-5.5.1" (not "/opt/netbeans-5.1.1").
    Here is a simple way to find out what is wrong. Please, run script "sunstudio" under "bash -x",
    and look at the output. Here is an example:
    % bash
    bash-3.00$ export PATH=/shared/dp/branches/ceres/FCS/inst/intel-S2/bin:$PATH
    bash-3.00$ type sunstudio
    sunstudio is /shared/dp/branches/ceres/FCS/inst/intel-S2/bin/sunstudio
    bash-3.00$ bash -x /shared/dp/branches/ceres/FCS/inst/intel-S2/bin/sunstudio
    ++ /bin/uname
    + OS=SunOS
    + validate_netbeans_cnd /shared/dp/branches/ceres/FCS/output/intel-S2/pseudoinst/opt/SUNWspro/netbeans
    + '[' -f /shared/dp/branches/ceres/FCS/output/intel-S2/pseudoinst/opt/SUNWspro/netbeans/platform9/core/core.jar -a -d /shared/dp/branches/ceres/FCS/output/intel-S2/pseudoinst/opt/SUNWspro/netbeans/ide10 -a -d /shared/dp/branches/ceres/FCS/output/intel-S2/pseudoinst/opt/SUNWspro/netbeans/cnd2 ']'
    + NBHOME=/shared/dp/branches/ceres/FCS/output/intel-S2/pseudoinst/opt/SUNWspro/netbeans

  • Systemd vboxweb.service mod when needing to start as non-root user

    Hi,
    Don't know if this will help anyone, but here goes,
    I wanted the systemd service unit to run using my local account but to get this to work, I had to do the following:
    1. Create a file called vboxweb_mod.conf in /etc/tmpfiles.d with the below inside it (replace <user> <group> with your username and group you want vboxweb started with.)
    D /run/vboxweb 0755 <user> <group>
    2. Create /etc/systemd/system/vboxweb_mod.service to look like this: (replace <user> <group> with your username and group you want vboxweb started with.)
    [Unit]
    Description=VirtualBox Web Service
    After=network.target
    [Service]
    Type=forking
    PIDFile=/run/vboxweb/vboxweb.pid
    ExecStart=/usr/bin/vboxwebsrv --pidfile /run/vboxweb/vboxweb.pid --background
    User=<user>
    Group=<group>
    [Install]
    WantedBy=multi-user.target
    3. Issue command
    #systemctl enable vboxweb_mod.service
    4. Either reboot or issue command
    #systemctl start vboxweb_mod.service
    Hope this helps someone out. (I had to do something similar to get sabnzbd running correctly as a systemd service. :-))

    Thanks, you helped me. I had gotten hung up on '--user = <vboxuser>' in the ExecStart line, which works for one of my other services, but not this one.

  • [SOLVED] Start process or script as a non root user on boot

    This is my first time posting here, I installed arch last week and have been able to firgure almost everything out. The wiki pages (very well written) and the forums have been a big help. However this is one question that I haven't been able to find the answer to.
    "How do I start a process or script as a user other then root at boot?"
    My guess is my inability to find an answer is mostly from my relitivly small understanding of bash scripting. If someone could point me to a guide or write down an example themselves I would greatly apriceate it.
    Thank you,
    Tim

    Yes, rc.local itself would hang, but if you background the process inside rc.local using the '&' symbol at the end of the command, then that command will be backgrounded and rc.local can continue.

    Hi
    This is a Unix problem, you may check if you have all the permissions.
    I suspect that some of the files which may be owned by someone other than user-value and therefore preventing the writting to the
    files.
    Can you check the files owership under /usr/local/bea/wlserver6.1/config/mydomain/applications/.wlnotdelete to see if any of the
    files or subdirectories are owned by someone else, such as 'root' or even under different group?"
    Hope this help
