Solaris10/amd64 and Xorg display rotation using Nvidia 5200 driver

Hello,
in both XFree86 and in Xorg X11 implementations, the driver for Nvidia cards include support for display rotation which is quite nice feature having display which support it. I like it in linux and also would like to give it a try in Solaris10/amd64 which I'm tryint to use as a developer system now, but unfortunately I'm not able to find out where the configuration file(s) for bundled Xorg resides, or at least from looking into "top" utility I see process Xorg which I assume is Xorg's X server. My other assumptions are that if using Xorg, then Sun also uses Xorg's drivers and also Xorg's configuration -- if this is not true, please correct me.
Thanks!
Karel

The Xorg configuration file is /etc/X11/xorg.conf but does not exist by default, instead autoconfiguring on startup. To generate a configuration file, do a command line login as root and run /usr/X11/bin/Xorg -configure.

You may need root to find that out but if your Xperia Z1 Compact is not rooted then use a file manager like “Solid Explorer”. Open it and then navigate to #_ System Root > sys > devices > mdss_dsi_panel > panel_id and Check what is mentioned there.
Sony has used different panels for Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1 F and now for Xperia Z1 Compact, well it seems display lottery will affect future flagship devices also.

Every phone manufacturer does this, even Apple. They use different factories and companies across a production run (e.g. JDI, Sharp and LG for iPhone 5) and the panels will have slightly different characteristics despite being of the same type. Apple chooses to callibrate each panel in the factory, however, which not many others do. Customers should demand this, though, and just return their phones if they're not happy with their panels.

  • [SOLVED] xorg update has broken nvidia-173xx driver

    Hi,
I've been using arch for around 2 and a half months on 2 computers (a dell Inspiron 2200 and an old home built pc). So far I've been able to figure out most things myself.  However, following today's xorg update x seems to be broken. My laptop, which does not use nvidia, seems to be fine. On the pc i installed the i686 version and am running kde 4.5.1
I have reinstalled nvidia-173xx and nvidia-173xx-utils, and run nvidia-xconfig but this has not helped any.
Although the installation is carried out there is an error stating:
ERROR: Module nvidia does not exist in /proc/modules In order to use the new nvidia driver, exit xserver and unload it manually
A google search on the above error didn't advance me any further, either.
I have also waited for today's kernel update but that hasn't seemed to fix things.
If I run "startkde" i get an error message stating that it can't connect to the x server.
"startx" says much the same only more verbose.
/var/log/Xorg.0.log has the following information :
    dlopen: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/nvidia_dvr.so undefined sym$
    failed to load /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/nvidia_dvr.so
    unloadable module "nvidia"
failed to load module "nvidia" (loader failed, 7)
I've done a lot of esearch but can't find any solutions to my issue. The following thread seems to be related :
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=103716
but i can't seem to find an answer there either.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Cheers

    ok, went to downgrade using
    #pacman -U ...
but i have yet another error due to a conflict between files :
xorg-server: /usr/lib/xorg/protocol.txt is already present in the file system
xorg-server: /usr/share/man/Xserver.1.gz is already present on the file system
xorg-server; /usr/share/xkb/README.compiled is afready present in the file system
is it possible to safely force the installation?
sorry if thatś a lazy question but I've been looking at this for so long that i can't fathom the idea of futher searching.
EDIT: ok, i had a break and realised it'd be safer to simply rename and the delete the problematic files. The downgrade went fine. I have X back.
    thanks for the help.

  • My Macbook won't start, and I must reinstall the disk. I haven't used time machine to back up, and I want to use an external drive to back up now. How can i do this from the utilities page?

I am currently in Zambia on missions work and my computer is constantly exposed to heat. I have just been trying to avoid using it during the hottest part of the day. Today though, I started it up and it was stuck on the grey page with the rotating circle for over an hour, then once the circle left, it remained frozen on the gray page. I used command + r at startup to go to the utilities page to analyze the disk. It found that there were problems with the disk, but then it could not fix those problems and told me to backup as much information as I could and reinstall or redo it all. I haven't ever used time machine to back up any of my information, but i have an external drive that I can use right now to backup my files. I can't get into my computer though to backup the files. How can I use this external drive to backup my files while the computer is currently messed up? Please help.

    Emergency Backups (Data Recovery)
    A)          Format an external disk:
(This will erase all data on the external disk.)
Boot in recovery mode (power then Command-R).
Alternative: Network recovery boot (power then Command-Option-R keys)
To format (and erase) the destination recovery disk:
Plug in the drive you are about to erase.
Select the volume that is NOT your system disk.
              Click on Partition.
Pull down under Partition Layout to 1 Partition.
              Click on Options…
              Select GUID Partition Table.
Name: Emergency Backup (or whatever you prefer)
Format: Select Mac OS Extended (journaled)
              Click Apply.
              Click Partition.
    B)          Try to boot in Safe Mode (power then Shift key).
(This will be a slow boot.  Be patient.)
If it won’t boot in Safe Mode, jump to C.
If it boots in Safe Mode, try to boot in normal mode.
If that fixed your problem then start a Time Machine backup.
                        http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427
                        https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4055
If not, boot in Safe Mode again.
              Go > Computer.
Double click on the system disk.
Drag the Users folder to the recovery disk.
    C)          To clone the disk:
              Boot in recovery mode.
              Select Disk Utility.
Try to repair the system disk twice.
Whether or not the repair succeeds:
Drag and drop the system disk to Source:
Drag an drop Emergency Backup to Destination:
(Take care not to reverse this order.)
Click Restore (the lower Restore button).
Once your system is healthy, maintain two reasonably current backups.  (Time machine restores can fail.)
Create either two Time Machine backups (good) or one or more Time Machine backup(s) and one or more bootable-clone backup(s) (better).
Use Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! to create bootable-clone recovery disks.

Yes I did. I almost hate to say it but after over 6 months of having this problem and finally getting fully sick of it and trying everything I could think of to fix it, I decided to install Ubuntu to see what would happen. What did happen was the screen flickering and freezing utterly completely disappeared. I haven't had one problem since. I love Arch and use it on two other boxes but my frustration got the better of me with my laptop. Clearly there is still a problem with one or more of the Arch packages related to the intel video driver judging by the amount of people that have had issues with it. Maybe Ubuntu patched their driver, I'm not sure, but it works flawlessly. Luckily, I use Nvidia drivers from their site using a custom kernel on my other boxes so I haven't had any problems there. I was a bit disappointed by the outcome, but at least I can use my laptop now

  • POSSIBLE? Copy USB thumb drive image to file and rebuild it to use the USB drive ?

I bought an 8GB USB thumb drive and used it to create an install boot disk to boot for install or use disk utility to clone my system drive for failsafe.  In other words it is called "Install OS X Mavericks" and I can boot from it.
SO, it just sits there and does nothing while I am not using it, and in the meantime I have some documents I need to get printed at Kinkos and class notes to carry around, and this drive could really be useful to do that, rather than waste time and money to buy a new one and keep track of them all.  You know how these things always get lost of broken and you end up with a few of them and never know what's on them?
So ... in UNIX style I tried to do a dd of the drive "dd if=/dev/disk2 of=$HOME/usbdrive.dmg bs=4096" - assuming a 4K block size would work.
The system does not seem to recognize it, so I'm doubting if that was the correct way to do this, or if this can be done at all.
What I want to do in short is to not bother with formating or anything like that, and just create a disk image that I can store around until I need to put it in my USB drive to boot for an install, rebuilt, clone system drive, etc.
Can this be done, and does anyone know how to do it?
I do have Mavericks Server, but I'm not sure how or if the System Image Utility will do this?  It sees the drive, but it just give me options to make a Net Boot Image, NetInstall Image, or a NetRestore Image ... and I do not know if any of those options will allow me to put it back on the drive when and if I need to?

    The command you want is
    sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app --nointeraction
This command only works if "Install OS X Mavericks" is in the Applications folder and a 8GB usb is erased and named "Untitled".  Change the command as you see fit.

  • Airport Extreme and Time Machine backups using a USB drive

    Hi there,
I checked through the threads/FAQ's for an answer to this but couldn't find anything...
I have an AE set up with a USB drive attached as my Time Machine backup drive. When I start my MBP up and initiate a forced backup, Time Machine will go and find my drive (via the AE), mount it and carry out the backup without a problem. However, if I start my MBP up and wait for the scheduled hourly backup, TM doesn't see the drive (or perform the backup) unless I go and manually mount the drive first.
I realise I can put the drive in my login items to auto mount on boot but I wondered if there was a way to get the scheduled backups to work without doing this (as with the forced backups).
    Thanks

    Pondini,
Actually, I wasn't thinking about theft. I was just thinking that for security in a possible data-loss "event," it was better to have the backup drive physically separated from the main computer. But maybe that's not necessary.
That's unlikely. A power surge could take out both your Mac and connected external HD. You do have your Macs on good surge protectors or, better yet, U.P.S. systems, right? If not, see [Using a U.P.S. System with a Mac|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/UPS.html].
But wherever the external HD is, unless it's on a surge protector or U.P.S., it's still exposed.
Other things causing data loss are even less likely to affect your Time Machine drive (especially if there's no other data on it).
Yes, I could hook something up to my Mac Mini. Good point! And that would really keep it separated, since it would be in an entirely different floor. But then again, Time Machine backups done wirelessly would probably take forever.
The first one, yes. But if you have a good WIFI connection, subsequent ones shouldn't take too long or be too obtrusive, except when you've updated a lot of data (like installing an OSX update).
See #22 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum), for setup instructions.
But this just shows that there are a lot of options.
    Yes.
I do wish Apple would solve the problem of Time Machine working via the Airport Extreme. That would be my favorite option.
Not likely. Time Machine's been out since Leopard, about 3 years, and backups via an Extreme have never been reliable or supported. Just why they work well on a Time Capsule, or even a USB drive connected to a TC, but not an Airport, is a mystery, but that's the way it is.
But it's always a good idea to keep secondary backups. See #27 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum), for some suggestions.

  • Solve Drive self-ejects and System Hangs when using MULTIPLE external drives!

I've discovered what I think is the underlying reason for many folks reporting similar problems.  I bet that I can predict the GUIDs of the drives/docks/cases you're having trouble with!  I bet that if you look in Disk Utility, if you click on the drives, you'll find "Connection ID 13757101839304263"!
Oh and if you look in System Profiler and click on 'FireWire' or 'USB' you'll find the GUID 0x30E002E0454647 !
What are the odds?  I shouldn't be able to predict them; theyr'e supposed to be unique, after all, but google that number and you'll see that a great many devices all use that GUID.   (13757101839304263 in decimal is the same thing as 30E002E0454647 in hex.)
Mac OS seems to rely on them to be unique, and has fits when they aren't.  I haven't found a total solution yet, but in the meantime, running this in Terminal can help:
    sudo kextload /System/Library/Extensions/IOFireWireFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleFWOHCI.k ext/
Sometimes it helps to run this first to unload before loading the kext (kernel extension):
    sudo kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/IOFireWireFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleFWOHCI.k ext/
Enter your password if/when prompted, of course.
In most cases, if you contact your hard drive manufacturer, they'll provide a utility that will fix the drive so that it actually has a truly unique GUID.
I'm mad at Cavalry for hiding the problem and refusing to fix it, W.R.T. the two 1TB HDs I bought from them for around $500, when that was the going price.
I figured it'd be helpful to create a user tip off the discussion in this thread: Disk Drive ejecting itself - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2151621?start=615&tstart=0     This is my first attempt to create a tip.  I'm not sure I'm doing it right, but here goes.

Sorry but this is just a really bad idea.
    1. The airport is ancient.. your speed will be terrible.
    2. Hubs filled with USB drives are never reliable.. disks refuse to spin up.. become unavailable.
    No.. don't do it.
Plug USB3 hub into the mini and use multiple decent hard drives .. that is fine.. use thunderbolt hub.. use thunderbolt drives if you can afford it.. but never use USB drives on the network.
    3. Time Machine is not reliable to external drive on Airport Extreme.. Apple do not support it in any Extreme except the latest one.
If you want the material available to the network buy a NAS. You can buy a cheap NAS of 8TB or so and another 8TB of USB drives which you plug into the NAS for backup.. however.. iphoto is not supposed to ever be put on network drives..
Apple explicitly states you will corrupt it.
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5168 Although mostly about FAT32           it adds network drives.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1198
    And I quote
It's recommended that you store your iPhoto library on a locally mounted hard drive. Storing your iPhoto library on a network share can lead to poor performance, data corruption, or data loss. If you use both iPhoto and Aperture with the same library, using a Mac OS X Extended formatted volume is recommended. For more information, see Aperture: Use locally mounted Mac OS X Extended volumes for your Aperture library.
For backup of the drives.. use Carbon Copy Cloner.. it is much better than TM as you can setup different job.. TM is really a single function.. !!

  • Office Jet 8610 and OS X Server: Using Public Network Drive to Scan and Fax

Dear all, I try to set up my Officejet 8610 so that it can send faxes and scans to my OS X Server (Mac OS X 10.10.4, latest patches installed), which is aptly named server. I set up Digital Fax with the printer's webpage and provide the following details: SMB-Directory: \\server\Shared\Username: The username of the administrator account (yes, I wrote it correctly)Password: The password of the administrator account (yes, I wrote that correctly, too)The SMB directory is shared via SMB (unencrypted (Yes, I know)) and writeable to everybody, even without a valid authentication. Nonetheless, the printer won't connect and complains that username and/or password is not correct. Using another username or no username at all does not work either. Any ideas on that? It would be really helpful if the sharing via SMB or, even better, AFP or WebDAV would work. Thanks a million!

Client systems retrieve mail from whatever mail server(s) they are configured to access, and whichever mail servers they can reach with the available network links. These communication links can be unrestricted wireless, iPhone-style EDGE connectivity, private wired, or virtual private network (VPN) connections, or otherwise.
So yes, clients can access your ISP mail, and a second account or profile or configuration (or whatever the particular mail client calls it) can be set up to reference your mail server.
Whether or not the client is mobile matters less here than establishing and securing connectivity.
Whether the client has connectivity with the mail server is a central factor, and this means a VPN into your network (which can be preferable for various reasons) or setting up a mail server that is accessible through your firewall.
I'd tend to set up the clients to raise a tunnel, then connect to your mail server. With this, your clients act as if they are on the local LAN; they're inside your network firewall for all intents and purposes.

  • Xorg 1.9.0 + nvidia 256.53 Performance Regression

Just thought I'd share in-case anyone else has this issue.
    PROBLEM:
After upgrading to xorg-server 1.9.0 I noticed text rendering was painfully sluggish,
this effect was most noticeable in my terminals (urxvt), when drawing text from
IRC or scrolling other text output.
I found the issue discussed here:

and at the end the helpful Nvidia developer provided a fix
    in Nvidia 260.19.06.
    SOLUTION:
    install aur/nvidia-beta (260.19.06)
which clears up the issue with nvidia slow text-rendering with xorg 1.9.0
thank the lord nvidia cares about linux users! (a little bit anyways)

I am having frequent Xorg crashes with the Nvidia beta driver. For instance, if I run Unetbootin or Skype is crashes as soon as I launch them. I figure this may be a combination of Xorg 1.9, Nvidia-beta, and qt 4.7.0-2.
I am beginning to think that this is because I have three monitors and dual cards.

I have the same need as vudean. I don't understand the security issue. If I type a document using Pages or whatever, why can't I upload the document to a web site? I think Apple should make the standard web "file upload control" available to iPad users.
I understand that there should be some limitations, but it should be possible to upload standard user files. I can upload them to Dropbox, so I don't se the big difference.
Does Apple read this? If not, where can I propose this feature to them?

  • [SOLVED] Nvidia and Xorg 1.8: Failed to Increase Resolution

    Hi there,
with the new Xorg 1.8 I experienced the following Problem:
When booting my system, the screen is set to 1680x1050 resolution which works fine.
To play some games, I use to change the screen resolution to 1024x768 via xrandr.
But when I try to set the resolution back to anything bigger than 1024x768, both xrandr and nvidia-settings fail.
    Output of xrandr:
    $ xrandr -s 1680x1050
Failed to change the screen configuration!
    $ xrandr --verbose -s 1680x0105
Size 1680x105 not found in available modes
Trying to change the Resolution back to 1680x1050 by nvidia-settings:

Would you like to remove this MetaMode?
Then I try restarting my XServer (to get back the 1680 res), it crashes with following error message:

  • [SOLVED] nvidia and xorg-server, slow start compared to nv

I've seen many similar topics but none that have been solved, therefore the new topic.
Starting xorg with nv driver takes just a few seconds to desktop, while using nvidia takes almost 10 seconds more to get to desktop. Although after reaching desktop everything works fine. I've used a minimal xorg.conf for each driver (replacing nvidia with nv):
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "Device0"
    Driver "nvidia"
    EndSection
    The /var/log/Xorg.0.log when using nvidia:

From what I can tell it is something with the nvidia driver that doesn't play well with xorg.  Perhaps some kind of autodetection that takes long time to finish. Anyone got any ideas how to solve this?

Didn't see they where timestamps . Yes it seems that glx is one cause of the delay. I've tried some different xorg.conf, and it's always ligglx.so or  NV-GLX that slows it down. Any suggestions on how I can speed this up?
ps. The computer is ok. Although the garddrive is a SATA 3.0Gb/s, 5400 RPM.  But I don't think this is the problem?

  • Xorg freezes on startx [solved using nvidia 185.13 beta driver]

I'm guessing this has been said before. I don't know if this a evdev hotplug problem or a nvidia problem.
    Geforce 6600 GT (agp)
nvidia  180.29 driver ( tried both pacman -S nvidia and the driver directly from nvidia )
I have nvidia in the Modules section and hal in Daemons for the rc.conf file.
I tried an older nvidia driver but it 177.80 but that wouldn't work either.
The http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA helped me upto this point. I've never had problems like this with other nvidia cards or drivers.

I've already done that but that alone didn't work. I had to revert this back to default
    Section "ServerFlags"
    Option "AutoAddDevices" "False"

Now that it's deleted, the mouse and keyboard works.
