The procedure to change the default global umask from 0022 to 0002, so that most files created by one user on a machine will be read-write by other users in the same group, seems to have been broken or to have been changed in OS X Lion from OS X Snow Leopard. What worked as far back as OS X 10.4 and was officially documented was done from Terminal: "defaults write /Library/Preferences/.GlobalPreferences NSUmask 2" (with a sudo, if not logged in as 'root').
Another way documented in various places and which I actually used through OS X 10.6 was also done via Terminal. Two files were created: /etc/launchd.conf (for system-wide global umask) or /etc/launchd-user.conf (for user-specific global umask). The contents of each were simply the single umask command, "umask 002" or ("umask u=rwx,g=rwx,o=rx", I can't remember which variant I used - they're functionally the same, though).
No matter which method I use, the 2nd or the 1st, the global umask no longer changes.
Does anyone know whether this has been deliberately hobbled under OS X Lion, requiring purchase of OS X Lion Server? Is this an OS X Lion bug? Or, am I looking at something wrong?See this support article, which was written for OS X Server, but seems applicable to Mac OS X client versions as well:
Mac OS X Server v10.5, 10.6: Setting a custom umask
The excerpt below describes the use of /etc/launchd-user.conf, and strongly cautions against using /etc/launchd.conf.
Umask for user applications
In Mac OS X v10.5.3 and later, you can create the file /etc/launchd-user.conf with the contents "umask nnn". Do not include the quotation marks and replace nnn with the desired umask value, such as 027 or 002.
This will set the user's umask for all applications they launch, such as Finder, TextEdit, or Final Cut Pro, and control the permissions set on new files created by any of these applications.
Umask for system processes
In Mac OS X v10.4 and later, create the file /etc/launchd.conf with the contents "umask nnn". Do not include the quotation marks and replace nnn with the desired umask value, such as 027 or 002.
This will set the umask for all processes. Changing this value is strongly discouraged because it changes the permissions on files used by the system software. If the permissions are too restrictive, dependent software may not work. If the permissions are too open, they may introduce security issues. -
/etc/rc.conf: CONSOLEFONT=
Hi, back when I was to install Arch I could issue a 'km' to configure keyboard layout and console font.
Now that I have system up and running, how do I check the list of console fonts installed and how do I configure /etc/rc.conf to use it?# CONSOLEFONT: found in /usr/share/kbd/consolefonts (only needed for non-US)
Am I blind or what? Shame on me.
I hope this one will be valid:
do you know how to preview each one?

Which configuration file modified the /etc/resolv.conf ?
Hello Everyone,
I have 2 linux VM in my laptop that has been setup in similar way but one of them behaves differently every time it gets rebooted.
This is OEL6 update 5
I configured 4 interfaces:
eth0 - eth3 is setup with NAT-Network to be able to communicate with other VMs only.
eth4 is setup with bridged network.
I've configured the ifcfg-eth# scripts as follows:

I never setup any dhcp client configuration before, but each time the VM is rebooted or started it seems that the /etc/resolv.conf always gets overwritten again.
However, in Server 1, somehow the dhcp client is working and getting the right DNS server IP address.
What I want to achieve for the Server 2 is like the one in the Server 1 where the nameserver I got from the ISP is also configured there.
That will made it easier if I need to download just a small file from the internet.
Other than that, I also wanted to understand what other configuration that could affect this /etc/resolve.conf file gets overwritten, which configuration and how to configure it.
Thanks in advance for your help in advance.

To make it simpler, I can simply delete those interfaces (eth0, eth1, eth2, & eth3) right now and left with eth4 which I think can be directed to the actual question I was asking.
So here's the result of ipconfig on my host:
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-90-F5-CC-F9-DB
DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes
IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.5(Preferred)
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
103.11.48.126
NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Enabled
As you can see from that result, if you compare the Server 1 and Server 2, the /etc/resolv.conf from Server 1 managed to get that 103.11.48.126, whereas the one in the Server 2 couldn't.
This is exactly what I'm trying to resolve.
Does this make any sense to you?
Just forget about the other interfaces.
Thank you,

No need for /etc/asound.conf ~/.asoundrc for mixing anymore?
Hullo!
I just installed the new version of MPD and was at the first time trying to do ALSA all the mixing of multiple audio streams on its own and found it working without any problems.
Sure, this is surely nothing new an might be the case since a year or something like that, but to improve the Archwiki article on this, I'd like to hear some more experiences with this setup from people who use other programs than me...
Ok, here's how I've done it.
You need a correctly set up ALSA as well as 'libao' installed.
To use libao, create either /etc/libao.conf(for system-wide setup) or ~/.libao and write only this line into it:
default_driver=alsa09
There are (at least to my knowlegde) 3 types of programs:
1. The ones that directly support alsa output
2. Programs that use libao for audio output
3. Programs supporting only oss output.
It is possible to mix the output of all these programs simultaneously to your card. it works!
mpd: (supports direct alsa output)
does not need any sound specific settings in the conf file. It chooses a usable audio output itself.
NOTE:I only have alsa as output device installed. I don't know, who mpd behaves when it finds artsd, esd, jack or whatever. Specifying a certain output may be necessary to have everything working.
mplayer, mpg321, gaim (libao)
these programs use libao to pipe their audio streams to whereever libao sends them, so setting default_driver to alsa09 solves all problems with these programs
opera (as example for the oss fraction)
Has to be started through "aoss opera" to enjoy sound mixing with flash movies and mp3s in the browser. To avoid having to load aoss before starting any oss-app, shaurz has posted a solution in the forums. Nice thing!
That are all the programs I've tried so far and I have no problems with scratching sounds or reduced sound quality (as the wiki says) but maybe I just can't hear any difference with my disco-damaged ears..
What I would like to hear now: Whar are your experiencas with the alsa software mixing systeme aka dmix in 'vanilla setup'? Did you find any programs that need an own asound-configuration or is this setup commonly-usable without any disadvantages so an update to the concerning wiki-page could be finally done?
greets,
jakobI noticed something strange (cool) aswell. I've got an onboard Realtek somethingsomething sound"card" (using the snd-intel8x0 module). It didn't support mixing out of the box on Linux using ALSA. I had to fiddle aroudn with dmix after which it would work great.
I'm running a pretty recent installation and I hadn't come around to do the mixing part of my sound yet, but yesterday it seemed to work by itself! Before, I could only have one source using ALSA (e.g. one mplayer). But now, it all works together!
I don't know what I did that made this happen. Maybe just a simple pacman -Syu. Or maybe I got wasted and fixed it after I blacked out, another viable possibility. -
Hello:
I foolishly modified the /etc/sysctl.conf file on my Macmini server running 10.8.4 server and now things do not work as expected:
* most programs fail to launch (Firefox, Git, Safari)
* the system takes a long time to boot
* there is no network connectivity
* the Server app (and services) fail to launch
I'll greatly appreciate if somebody could post or point me to a stock or default "/etc/sysctl.conf" file.
I did try deleting the /etc/sysctl.conf file altogether, but it did not solve my problem.
Thanks.KnowsABit wrote:
It's interesting and worrisome that both of these answers conflict with the instructions at the Postgres web site, and in other posts about installing Postgres on Mountain Lion. According to those resources, there is no such file by default, but creating it (and rebooting) is the way to change these settings.
This thread is about Postgres on OS X Server, which is installed by default. You shouldn't have to do anything else to set it up. If you are installing Postgres on OS X Client, then you may have some work to do. I tried Postgres a couple of years ago. It was pretty clunky. I assume Apple does a better job of configuring Postgres than Postgres. I suggest installing OS X Server if you want to run Postgres and MySQL is not suitable for some reason. -
Hey guys,
For some unknown reason /etc/dhcpcd.conf continually overwrites my /etc/resolv.conf file, eventhough I set the "nohook resolv.conf" hook in /etc/dhcpcd.conf.
This is screwing up my DNS and intermittently creating connection problems. Any of you guys know why the hook is not taking effect or how I can stop dhcpcd from overwritting this file?
Thanks

I changed my DNS to the Google one (8.8.8.8 or something). That's in "resolv.conf", isn't it? I remember editing some OTHER configuration file, which is then read to create the "resolve.conf" file. There it is, in that link to the wiki, under "Use resolv.conf.head". Does that help you do what you want to do?
There's three techniques at the wiki link, the nohook one, the resolv.conf.head one and the write-protection attribute. -
I've never thought I'll ever say that, but...
I decided to switch my faculty's workstations from Gentoo to Arch. It seemed to be a good idea until I started to configure LDAP client configuration. Under Gentoo it seems to be much more _easier_... :-(
Instead of a single file there are : /etc/pam_ldap.conf and /etc/nss_ldap.conf . I'm trying to figure out the difference between the first two ones. They differ... slightly. I wonder what'd happen if I deleted one of them and created just a symlink? If there are two files there should be some reason for this. I cannot guess: what reason -- I can't find any...Thanks for any clarification.
Last edited by quayasil (2011-08-22 08:07:54)I sincerely doubt that. You can change the way you're authenticating yourself to SSH but that doesn't automaticly imply that you would also need to change the way SSH checks this authentication with the system.
Besides; just take another carefull look at the sshd_config file; you'll see that RSA authentication is enabled by default but disabled in Solaris 10. Simply change the option and... Also keep in mind that RSAAuthentication applies to protocol 1, and I'm not too sure that you'd want to fully focus on that. -
How to configure the rc.conf for a HUAWEI E220 modem
Hello.
I configured my HUAWEI E220 after the instructions in the wiki, and it's working well. BUT, I can't connect to the internet. I think that is because i didn't made any modifications at the network configurations in the rc.conf file. I don't know what to change. What should I write in it (i know that i can't use eth0 anymore, but what is the right interface for HUAWEI, ppp0, ttyUSB0...)? Thank you.I knocked together an RC script to start and stop the connection, which is ppp0
from it:
/usr/bin/wvdial three &> /dev/null &
route add default gw 10.64.64.64 &> /dev/null &
rm /etc/resolv.conf
echo nameserver 208.67.222.222 >> /etc/resolv.conf
perhaps this helps? -
How to properly create and configure SharePoint 2013 Search service with PowerShell?
Hello Forum,
I have installed SharePoint 2013 across three tier servers:
WFE Server (Of course, SharePoint is installed here. Bsically this is just a Web server)
APP Server (Of course, SharePoint is installed here + Central Admin + Service Apps).
SQL Server
I now want to create and configure the Search service, obviously on the APP Server, But of course the search functionality should work correctly on the WFE server to.
I want to do this via a proper PowerShell script. I found Spence Harbar's script on: (http://www.harbar.net/articles/sp2013mt.aspx), But it has three problems, and they are as follows:
1) Spence Harbar himself literally stated on his article that this script is for: "deploying on a single server farm", But what if I have three tier servers? Could anyone please help me out in suggesting the required tweaks in the
script?
2) By default Search uses the SP_Farm account, So, How can I change the script to use other dedicated account for the search service e.g. SP_SearchAcc ?
3) How can I modify the script to specify a default Search center?
4) Apart from all the three aforementioned point - Is the script missing anything?
I would greatly appreciate your inputs - Thanks !the only differences are where you place the components. if you are doing a small server farm with a 1-1-1, most likely you just need to change the script so that you set the index and query processing component on the front end, but the others on
the app server. just a 2 second update... just keep in mind this will work, but I am making several assumptions without any knowledge of your farm, users, capabilities.
generally, there would be more of a breakout on the topology than that, but im guessing for this farm that you wont have dedicated search servers. also, a lot depends on # users (rps really), # items in index, size of VMs (RAM for query processing,
Disk for index, etc, etc), and making sure the topology works for your particular environment and needs.
if you want more detailed topology help, which aligns as closely as possible to "best practices" (not that those exist in SharePoint, go ahead and provide the total # users, average/peak RPS for search, current index size, content source types,
VM specs RAM, CPU, #/Size of drives, HA concerns/priority (obviously isn't, since only 1-1-1)

Set systemwide variable with /etc/launchd.conf does not work in 10.10
Hi,
before i upgraded my system, i set in file /etc/launchd.conf some variables. I need this for the Shell, Eclipse and some other tools.
user@osx10-10:~$ cat /etc/launchd.conf
setenv M2_HOME /opt/maven
setenv MAVEN_OPTS "-Xmx2048m -Dmaven.surefire.debug=-Xmx2048m"
user@osx10-10:~$
With Mavericks there was no problem, since Yosemite no Variables are set.
Also when i try to set it manually with launchctl setting xxxxx xxxx, no variable is set.
Does anyone has a workaround for me?
Regards
JoergAlex It should work . by the way your PATH variable should be placed in /etc/paths like this :
/usr/bin
/bin
/usr/sbin
/sbin
/usr/local/bin
/Users/alex/Dev/apache-ant-1.9.2/bin
Note after each line there is a return key
As for environment variables open your ~/.bash_profile and place the.
export ANT_HOME = /Users/alex/Dev/apache-ant-1.9.2
launchctl setenv ANT_HOME $ANT_HOME
export ANT_OPTS = -Xmx512M
launchctl setenv ANT_OPTS $ANT_OPTS
make sure you save and restart all applications that need to read environment variables. I faced the same problem with intelliJ accessing M2_HOME
As a side note : consulting the man pages of launchctl(1)
DEPRECATED AND REMOVED FUNCTIONALITY
launchctl no longer has an interactive mode, nor does it accept commands from stdin. The
/etc/launchd.conf file is no longer consulted for subcommands to run during early boot time; this func-
tionality was removed for security considerations. While it was documented that $HOME/.launchd.conf
would be consulted prior to setting up a user's session, this functionality was never implemented.
launchd no longer uses Unix domain sockets for communication, so the LAUNCHD_SOCKET environment vari-
able is no longer relevant and is not set.
launchd no longer loads configuration files from the network -

You are running the Examples application shipped with WLS, which I guest
the
correct DB to connect with is Cloudscape yet to Oracle, unless you make
changes to the original ConnectionPool in the examples. Anyhow, please
show

/etc/resolv.conf problems
In my conky script, the gmail portion stopped working so I just tried to do a normal wget https://mail.google.com in the terminal. The output was
--11:41:41-- https://mail.google.com/
=> `index.html'
Resolving mail.google.com... 1.0.0.0
Connecting to mail.google.com|1.0.0.0|:443...
which obviously isn't right. What could have changed? I use WICD to connect to my network.

i was wandering around forums and i noticed the wicd issue with archlinux, since it still focuses on dhcpcd, not dhclient - so resolv.conf doesnt upload.

let me know if it solves the issue.
That fixed it, thanks. Let's hope it stays this time.

Is there a reason you're starting the dhcp Server, and not client? Do you want dhcpcd?
That was my mistake. -
[SOLVED]/etc/vconsole.conf doesn't react to any change
Hi,
I'm new in Arch Linux, so sorry if I'm missreading something.
I try to change my font and keymap using this manual: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/KEYMAP
So i edit /etc/vconsole.conf like this:
KEYMAP=cz-lat2
FONT=Lat2-Terminus16
but nothing change, even after reboot. "kbd" is installed.
Btw. when I run "setfont Lat2-Terminus16" the font is changed (but just this session).
Thanks

Settings in /etc/sysctl.conf overwritten [SOLVED]
I added a new line to /etc/sysctl.conf setting the vm.dirty_ratio to 3 (line is simply `vm.dirty_ratio = 3`). I can invoke it by running `sysctl -p` so I know the syntax is correct. This setting is however not loaded upon a reboot. The systemd-sysctl.service is however kicked off just fine and completes without errors. I have also tried removing the line from /etc/sysctl.conf and placing it in /etc/sysctl.d/dirty.conf but again, it is not honored at boot. What am I doing wrong?
EDIT: The solution is in post #31 - acknowledgement to chp for pointing me to it. Note that I also changed to topic to a more relevant one.
Last edited by graysky (2013-08-10 12:27:41)Guess I'm stumped. I just spun up an Arch VM, pasted in the /etc/sysctl.conf below and reboot it. All the settings in the file in the VM are applied. If Leonid's guess that something is overriding these values on my workstation, I would like to figure out what it is and shut it down.
