Solid Layer Shape messed up

Hi, I am trying to create an energy beam/blast for a project. I created an ellipse shape on my solid layer but when I try to expand the shape with the pen tool it becomes a rectangle. I am not sure what I did wrong but here is a screen shot of the problem. Help would be much appreciated.

It works as it is supposed to - your solid is simply too small and outside the bounds there are no visible pixels when the mask goes over the edge.

How to add Solid/Text/Shape at specific index?

Hello, is there a way to add Solid/Text/Shape at a specific index in a composition? Like for example a composition has 5 layers and I want to add a Solid at index 3 instead of at the beginning of the layers like it does by default. Setting the ID of the Solid after I have added it doesn't work, because its readOnly.

As far as I know these is no way to change the index while creating a layer.
Look into <<AE Scripting guide>>.Page.87,There are 4 methods to satisfy your need after the layer is created.

I almost forget that ,script can use app.executeCommand(app.findMenuCommandId("Shape Layer")); to add a shape layer just above your selectedLayers. I don't remember,but maybe this feature is supported after AE CS6

Masking a Solid Layer with an Effect

Should be easy, you would think.
I have a solid layer (white) with a radio waves effect applied to it. I've got the effect dialed in and it's what I want, but I want to mask off just a triangular portion of this layer, creating a beam shape (not eminating in 360 degrees.)
But my mask has no effect on the effect, if you know what I mean. I've tried inverting the mask and changing the mask modes but nothing works.
Isn't there a way of masking a shape layer with an effect on it?

Precompose or nest.
Apply the triangular masking to the nest.
Think of it this way, your'e making a movie of the radio wave effect then importing the movie and applying a mask to the movie.
You can also set Radio Waves to use closed but custom shapes as the emission source but that's often more trouble than simply masking a nested pr precomposed sequence.

Sizing issue when pasting corner pin data from mocha ae onto a solid layer. Please help!!

When I bring in my corner pin tracking data from mocha ae and paste it onto a solid layer that I created, it sizes the layer to the corner pins, but I want it to stay the whole size of the screen. I'm following a tutorial at the address http://www.videocopilot.net/tutorials/sub_surface_skin/ and there is no mention of this problem in the tutorial. I am following the tutorial exactly, and using the latest version of After Effects. Any help would be much appreciated.

I took some photos of a simpler version of whats going on.
Just in AE with my footage.
About to track in mocha.
Tracked in mocha (only tracked half because i didnt want to wait).
Adding a solid to paste my corner pin data to.
Masked it to where I wanted it.
Selected the type of data I wanted.
Copy to clipboard.
Paste.
Great... the insert image thing grayed out.

Color of SOLID layer

Can we change color of our SOLID LAYER after made them?
Without any FX tools?
I made a black solid layer but then I want to change color of it. How to do that? There is no any properities of that layer or something like that. Even when I click 2x on it I can't see option to change selected color.

How to stop the white arrow from selecting all layer shapes

Hi Everyone, I just switched from cs6 to CC. I was very accustomed to this. If I wanted to say make a rectangle shape wider, first I would have the layer shape selected in the layers menu, next I would select the white arrow tool, then I would clicking/drag to select certain points on a shape. Once those points were selected I would just use shift and the arrows keys to extend my shape. Now if I attempt to do so with creative cloud photoshop, if there are any other shapes in the same area, the white arrow tool will select all shapes points, which doesnt make sense to me b/c I still just have the "rectangle shape layer selected in the layers menu". Can anyone help me out? Hopefully I explained myself well enough.

If you look at the tool options bar with the Direct Selection Tool (white arrow), do you have Select set to Active Layers?
Have you updated photoshop cc to version 14.2.1?

Set the size of Solid layer by expression?

Before this I used my custom drop-down menu and expression on Transform:

By scripting you can do :
     var source = this_layer.source;
     source.width = newWidth;
     source.height = newHeight;
     Be careful as this will affect all layers throughout the project that have that same solid as source.
By expression, you can't.

Masking paint brush solid layer

Howdy,
I searched the web to figure out my issue but couldn't find the right answer anywhere.
I feel like it should be a very simple solution.
I am drawing animations with the brush tool onto a black solid layer which is set to add blending mode.
My goal is to create a mask on the solid layer to hide a certain area of what I drew... but it doesn't change anything.
I noticed when I add another effect to the layer (such as curves) the mask does hide that area of the effect, but thats not exactly what I'm trying to do.

You can't mask directly on a paint layer but you can use a black solid set to screen, draw the mask on the black solid and use that as a track matte for your paint layer or you can pre-compose the paint layer and mask the pre-comp. It's a render order thing.

3d Solid Layer Glitch.

Hello, I am trying to mask an object in my composition, but whenever I create a solid layer and turn into 3d, it creates a weird glitch with the background image. Please help, I want to remove that particle looking affect on the solid.

Ok and one more question, when I press f4, I do not see Track Matte tabs for my "Citadel Pic" layer like the other picture has. How do I get those Track Matte tabs like in the other picture?

I do not know how to tell if my GPU is compatible or not and I am not planning to bend the layer. I am trying to follow this tutorial right here.

Solid alpha shape to vector solid shape

Please can someone help me this is driving me totally nuts, ive tried all sorts of tracing and everything but cant seem to get just the outline of the shape i want.
I have an animated logo ( white), on a background(black) ..( and tried inverting & tried on alpha to see what happens but still no luck..
I want to get the ai (filled solid ) vector of this logo, by itself on the layer instead of the rasta image, but whatever i do i just end up with a rectangular box.
What i need it for is to take it as an illustrator (v.8) layered shape of frames into aftereffects for use in zaxwerks.
Please please can someone help.

Open the file in Photoshop using Frames to Layers, then trace each individual layer. AI certainly does for very rational reasons not open the file directly, but rather as a self-contained object to retain the animation. Hence tracing will not work directly.

Copying shape layer shape to mask shape problems

Hello,
Sorry, super basic question I'm sure. I want to have text animate along a shape layer's shape (say for instance an elipse). If I copy the Elipse Path component and try to paste into a 'Mask' component of a text layer, nothing happens. Also I can't copy my Elipse shape into a Mask layer of a solid either. However I can a Mask Path to a Shape path without a problem. Any ideas?

The After Effects CC (12.2) update makes creating Bezier paths easier and more obvious.
option for creating shape layers based on Bezier paths:
When a shape tool (Rectangle, Rounded Rectangle, Polygon, Star, or Ellipse tool) is active, you can use the new Bezier Path option in the Tools panel to create a new shape based on a Bezier path, as opposed to the default of creating a new shape based on a parametric path. Holding the Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac OS) key while drawing a shape causes the opposite behavior—i.e., if the Bezier Path option is enabled, holding the Alt or Option key causes the shape tool to create a parametric path; if the Bezier Path option is disabled, holding the Alt or Option key causes the shape tool to create a Bezier path.
command for converting a parametric shape layer path to a Bezier path:
You can convert a parametric path to a Bezier path after the parametric path has already been created by context-clicking (right-clicking or Control-clicking on Mac OS) the property group for the parametric path (e.g., Rectangle Path 1) and choosing the Convert To Bezier Path command from the context menu. If the parametric path is animated (keyframed), the converted Bezier path is a static path based on the parametric path at the current time; keyframes are lost.
IMPORTANT: When you use the Convert To Bezier Path command to convert a parametric shape path to a Bezier shape path, the Bezier path that is created does not animate well (i.e., interpolation between paths behaves strangely and unpredictably). This is related to path direction and how transformations are stored. For now, you should not use these converted paths for animated paths (interpolation between paths); but, if you do want to try, you may be able to work around the issues by reversing the path before conversion.

Replace solid with shape?

I have a solid with some expressions and effects etc on it and I want to replace it with a shape layer so I dont have to start again but I cant find a a way to do it. If I create a shape it doesnt show in the project panel like solids do for some reason so I cant alt drag it onto the solid. The reason I want to replace it is becauase I want to use the built in effects that the shapes layer has such as trim paths etc. Is there a way to do this?

Ok thanks. Also i noticed when I create a shape from an illustrator layer it doesnt keep the graphic styles or clipping masks etc. Is there a way to convert this information?
No. That's inherent in the process. If you want this, you'd have to use the AI file as it is or rebuild al lthe stuff natively inside AE. the rest is too vague and I'm afraid you are getting too worked up on that vector thing. As far as AE is concverned a layer is a layer and there is no requirement whatsoever for them to be shape layers otehr than perhaps a better sharpness and quality with vector artwork. Otherwise simple nested comps will do just fine, though you should get used to the fact that you will have to use some keyframes to get them to do what you want them to do. Whether those are on expression parameters for a wiggle() or on the layer's transform properties directly to me makes not much of a difference.

Solid 3d shapes cs5

hello.
when diong adjustments to a 3d shape like this sphere in cross section of the 3d panel.
its always hollow along with all shapes. how would you get these this shape to be solid.

once the 3d sphere is created and then cross section in 3d panel.
then it wont allow any repousee adjustments to take place.
its just greyed out. not because of my nvidia card which is excellent.
i could get blender which as you know is free and will do the task im asking for.
then i would have to start from scratch and learn blender.

In pse 9 there is a button at the bottom of the layers panel, which you press
to get the list of adjustment layers.
Also Layer>New Fill Layer>Solid Color.

How do you remove the active stroke when on a layer/shape?

Alright so a rather simple question but I can not seem to find the answer anywhere.
I am trying to remove this black line (look at the picture)

It appears on active shapes and layers; it prevents me from seeing how my stroke is going to look, what my shadow looks like, messes with alighnment. I just want it gone. It was in Photoshop CS3, removed in Photoshop CS4 and 5 (5.5), but now it is back.

Thanks mate. I was actually viewing the "view" tab in photoshop and was looking at the extras and I checked all that out and found that out right before you posted. Has to be the most annoying default setting, I find it hard anyone would find a use for it.
