Solid Modeling (3D Cad/Cam)

Id would really like to have a decent solid modeller on arch, does anyone have experience with the available Linux solid modellers?
These are the ones I've found and my thoughts...
freecad... If I could manage to compile it was unusable do to various bugs
graphiteone... no archlinux packages, other packages don't seem to work on arch (wrong unicode encoding in python)
varicad... havn't tried it yet, but looks promising
medusa4... downloaded installer, I'm dubious about installing it however as it uses its own graphical installer
gcad3d... no x86_64 version
proeng.. I'm not 100% but it looks like they have discontinued the linux version
brlcad.. trying it out now, first thought is that it seems a bit complicated...
any thoughts?
Cheers

Catia and SolidWorks are owned by Dassault and going forward, they are only offering support on Windows. Older version of Catia V5 run on Solaris, but not Linux.
As for ones on Linux:
I've used VariCAD and it's good to a point. If you need to make simple static models, then you're fine. The last time I checked, VariCAD does not allow for kinematic constraints, which makes it difficult (but not impossible) to make moving models. The student version is only like $100 for a year licence, so it's fairly economical.
I've tried for a long time to get freecad installed but I always run into compiling errors as per another one of my threads.
BRLCAD is an option, but I haven't used it in depth. I know the US Army uses it, so it cannot be that bad.
ProEngineering Wildfire 3 runs on Linux, but it is outdated as Wildfire 5 is the current release (I think) but is only available for Windows.
I've never heard of/tried medusa4, but don't I wouldn't worry about a program that has it's own graphics installer. Matlab does and runs on Linux just fine.
If you are doing intense CAD stuff, you should probably be in windows using Catia, SolidWorks, ProE or AutoCAD

  • CAD/CAM (mechanical) software for Apple

My grandson wants to do mechanical design on his IMac. Since he's an Apple man he doesn't want to switch to PC to get capability. Are there any inexpensive Cad/Cam (mechanical design) software programs for Apple?

Another software which has educational pricing is Form-Z which is a 3-D/2-D modeling and drafting software. None of these first few programs are that easy to use, but with some diligents and reading through tutorials or guide books almost anyone can do it.
Here is the list as I know them...
    a) VectorWorks (previously mentioned by Geroge)
    --> http://www.nemetschek.net/
    b) Form-Z - I have used this for many years in a professional architecture office (I know they have educational pricing)
    --> http://www.formz.com/
    c) ArchiCAD by Graphisoft (know friends that have used this in professional office)
    --> http://www.graphisoft.com/
    d) TurboCAD (http://www.macworld.com/news/2005/06/07/turbocad/index.php)
    --> http://www.turbocad.com/
    e) PowerCADD

    f) Maya for OS X by Alias (very powerful but mostly used for animation/vsual effects)

and here are some other searches that I have done that are very good...

My desktop, model s5-1204, came without hdmi port. can one be added.

    Hi,
Based on its specs, it has:
    Expansion Slots:
    1 PCI Express x16 (Gen2.0)
    3 PCI Express x1 (Gen2.0)
1 PCI Express Mini Card x1
The option: you can add a video card to the PCIe x16 and use a card which has HDMI port. It only has 220W PSU therefore you have to update the PSU too.

  • Optimizing a cad/cam application

We have rolled out the 512 wae's to the edges and 7326 wae's to the core and having an issue with a cad/cam app as it's very slow...Does anybody have any experience with "taming" a cad/cam app in the wae's?
    thanks..

If the files are accessed using a CIFS share, or via NFSv2 (neither sound like they are the case, but CAD/CAM applications typically involve accessing a file share), we can provide latency reduction, caching, and protocol optimizations, which dramatically increase performance of accessing packages and files contained within packages without compromising coherency. DRE will minimize the transfer of repeated chunks of TCP data and should be very effective with CAD/CAM files as they are uncompressed and contain repeatable sequences.

  • Camera model support and camera raw

PS 5 tells me that my camera model (Canon D60) isn't supported by the currently installed version of camera raw, but we know that it is. How do I resolve this issue?

Look for the "About Plug-In" menu item in Photoshop.  Which menu it's on depends on your platform, Macintosh or Windows, but you've given no information.

Are you sure that it's a second gen iPad, and not the first gen ? There are pictures of the second gen iPad on this page http://www.apple.com/ipad/specs/ - the first gen doesn't have cameras (so there is no camera on its back), and the circle above the screen on the front of the first gen iPad is an ambient light sensor (for auto-brightness).
The model number (MC349LL) that you've given seems to indicate a first gen iPad

  • Using Solaris 11 Express for a multiprocessor CAD/CAM x86-64 system.

I'm considering using Solaris 11 Express as the OS for a multiprocessor Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacturing custom built x86-64 system for my machine shop business. I would like clarification of the license in this situation.
Would I be allowed to use Solaris 11 for free under the open-source license, or would I have to purchase a commercial license? Would I have to pay for program updates? Does just the Oracle Solaris Premier Subscription for Solaris 11 require payment rather than the actual software as well? Would I be required to purchase an Oracle Solaris Premier Subscription to use Solaris 11 in my situation, or can I purchase the Oracle Solaris Premier Subscription at a later date.
I have a lot of respect the open-source concept, and I would only use Solaris while keeping it's license intact. So the answers to these questions are very important factors affecting my decision regarding whether or not my company will start to use Solaris.

I'm afraid you'll have to contact Oracle directly to clarify what applies in your situation.

  • Is there anyway to exchange 3 week old rMBP with the new model that just came out.

    Hi,
I bought a 13-inch rMBP on 17.02.2015 and the new rMBP was released today, so 3 weeks have passed. Is there any possibility that I can exchange mine for the new one?
    Regards.

If you purchased your current MBP directly from Apple, you have 14 days to return it for an exchange or refund.  You are past that.
    Ciao.

  • Solid State Drive Upgrades

    Hi guys,
    My 2012 MacBook Pro (13" (non-Retina model) i7, 8GB) came with a 5400 RPM 750 GB hard drive.
While it runs fine for general use, I do a lot of pro-audio production & my system struggles while recording & mastering multiple tracks. Although 7200 RPM drives are usually the minimum requirment I thought I might as well keep up with the times & look into upgradint to a solid state drive. It's new territory for me, so any advice & additional information would be greatly appreciated .
In the past I've heard you should only go with drives that use a SandForce controller chipset... I don't know if that is still a valid requirment or not. Considering the size of my software & the audio files (pre-mastering), a 512 GB SSD drive is probably what I'm looking for.
    Any recommendations anyone?
Also, while I'm here, if I take out my current system drive (which also contains a Windows 7 installation - via Boot Camp) & mount that into an external USB caddy, can I boot into those operating systems? Compared to my PC I see no BIOS access options in order to set drive boot priority, etc. Can anyone advice as to this point?
Many thanks for your time & kind regards,
    mez

Take a look at the great information concerning SSDs here - http://www.overclock.net/t/1179518/seans-ssd-buyers-guide-information-thread/ Most of the coverage is pretty general but some of it is PC- specific. It's a good starting point.
I've a 512GB Crucial m4 series SSD that I've had since April. The nice thing about Crucial is that they have terrific Mac support. So do the drives from OWC, but I find them a touch too expensive.
There are likely a hundred users on here that have SSDs - and you may get a handful of opinions as to what the 'best' SSD is - I think that we tend to be 'in love' with the models that we own and that have given us good service (which is why I recommend Crucial - you don't have to take it to a Windows machine just to update the firmware).
You'll want to buy an external enclosure for your old drive, use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone your Mac partition and use Winclone to clone your Boot Camp installation. Then you can use the same external drive to keep a clone of your hard drive (again, I use CCC for that as well).
I'll keep an eye on this thread - should you have any further questions, write back.

  • Computer aided Machining  (CAM) for OSX

I am in the CNC Machining business. I have made a decision to get my first mac. I know I can operate my windows applications in parallels but, I am considering that a patch. The two main program types we use are CAD and CAM. Currently Rhino (a 3d modeling software CAD) is beta testing & is going to offer CAD for OSX users. Unfortunately I cannot find anyone on the CAM side who is following suite. I currently use MasterCAM (TM) from Dassult Systems (TM). Does anyone out there know of a CAM supplier who is going to be OSX compliant?

Assuming this application provide you manufacturing data , as Mudadassar said you need to check if CAM you are trying to connect is OPC complaint so you can integrate efficiently.
Also you may need to check how that software will provide you data is it available through Webservice ,
Tags which you can connect using PCO or direct Historian database to connect with MII.

  • View 3D model files as plain text in Visual Studio 2013

Hi, as the title says I'd like to be able to view 3D models as plain text in VS2013 and not through the built in model viewer that came in VS2012?
I havn't found a way to view .obj or .fbx files as plaintext in visual studio 2013 so I've had to temporarily change file extension or use a different editor.
So is there some way to disable the model viewer temporarily or toggle between text/model viewer?

    Hello,
Welcome to MSDN forum. But I am afraid that the issue is out of support range of VS General Question forum which mainly discusses
the usage of Visual Studio IDE such as WPF & SL designer, Visual Studio Guidance Automation Toolkit, Developer Documentation and Help System
    and Visual Studio Editor.
It seems that 3D model is related to games app such as DirectX app development. IN this case, we don’t have environment to research your issue. I suggest consulting your issue on DirectX and XNA forum for better support:
