Solid sleep light - not pulsing

Didn't want to just tack this onto another question, and I didn't see any answers when I searched here, so I hope no one minds another thread.
What does it mean when the sleep light stays on, but doesn't pulse like it does when it's sleeping? The only reference to the light at all in the manual is about it pulsing when the computer sleeps. We had a day when the light just stayed on solid after we (supposedly) shut down. I think we just figured it was in some standby mode, but in searching here, I'm betting we didn't let the computer shut down totally, because we had a heck of a time restarting it.
All's well now, and there seem to be no other issues (yet), but you'd think there's be some reference to the light staying solid in the troubleshooting section of the manual. I hope we didn't do any damage, but as I said, it's been running fine since. Has anyone else seen a solid glowing light?

If the light is on constantly, but the screen is
black, then the screen is asleep, but the computer
itself isn't, formerly Don.
The most probable cause is that you shut the screen
before shutdown of the computer had completed, but
there can be other reasons for a failed shutdown.
Its a good idea to keep an eye on such things,
because you can end up in a situation where, for
example, the procesor is still running when you put
the computer in a bag, with consequent heat issues.
As far as starting new threads go, go for it. Unless
your problem is clearly and obviously addressed by
another thread its actually a very good idea to start
a new one for your own particular problem. Otherwise
things can get very confused when posters are trying
to help out more than one problem sufferer. Often
what LOOKS like the same issue to the original poster
may turn out to involve something quite different,
and its easy to get lost in the ensuing confusions.
Cheers
Rod
Thanks. The MacBook was closed, so I can only assume the display was asleep. I'll bet you're right, though, and we just closed the lid before it finished shutting down. Since then I've been so paranoid, I've been waiting a good 20 seconds after the screen goes dark before closing the lid. I sure can't hear anything happening even with my ears right up to the vent.
And thanks for making me feel better about the new thread. Some forums get touchy about such things.
BTW, the only reason I'm formerly Don G. is because for some reason when I logged into my account, it made me go through the sign up page again, and said there was another user already with Don G. No kidding. That's me!

  • Sleep light not "pulsing" when in sleep mode

Hey guys, i have a little problem with the sleep light... i don't know when this started, but i notice today, that when i put my macbook pro to sleep, the light just stays on and not "pulsing" like it used to do... is that normal?
    How can i fix this?

This usually happens when you might have an application which is still running and is failing to quit. Check Activity Monitor for a list of all your processes.

  • ACD sleep indicator light not pulsing

I installed Windows Vista Home Basic on my Mac Pro yesterday. My display is a 20" ACD (aluminium).
Since this Vista installation, the indicator light on the ACD does not pulse during sleep, but remains on steadily. The front indicator light on the Mac does pulse as normal during sleep.
In both instances, this indicator light is off as normal on both the Mac and the ACD while the Mac is being used.
Is this an issue others have seen, and does it have any negative indications?

In Displays/Option, the Display Power Button preference had been set to 'Turns the display on and off' and this had caused the problem I described earlier. I am not sure why this option had been selected after the installation of Vista yesterday, because I didn't open Preferences during or after this installation.
I have now changed the option to 'Puts the system to sleep or wakes it'. This is the option I normally use and I was not actually aware it caused the display sleep light to pulse.
The display has now returned to the more usual state (for me) of gently pulsing.
Thank you, Malcolm, you have been very helpful.

  • Solid Sleep Light

Last week, my sleep light suddenly went from pulsing normally to staying on and solid from the moment I boot up. I can put the computer to sleep (the hard drive and display spin down, and when I wake it, I get the "wake up" whir and spinning of the HD), but the light doesn't pulse. It sounds like a circuit is being interrupted or something.
It's probably connected to the incident that happened at the same time: I got the ever-terrifying flashing folder with a question mark icon on startup at the same time. The first time I loaded from the Mac OS install disc, the Hardware Test didn't see my HD. However, after restarting a few times, it reappeared. I rebooted from the install disc and repaired the HD, and repaired permissions (a boot permission file seems to have been corrupted, somehow), and then reinstalled Mac OSX and re-upgraded to get everything up and running. Now the system is running fine (and it is faithfully backed up on an external HD, thank goodness) and I have Norton running, so I know it's not a virus.
Back to the sleep light - is this a hardware problem?

I took apart the lower case and ran a hair dryer on very low heat at the area. A few days later, the sleep light started pulsing again. Guess there was some moisture in there after all.

  • SLEEP LIGHT NOT BLINKING

    Hello All,
I have had my black Macbook for almost 4 years now. Recently, when my computer is in sleep mode, I noticed that the sleep light is not blinking. It isnt even coming on. It seems to be sleeping and nothing is running, its just that the light does not come on. What does this mean? I wanted to know what I could do to solve this problem. Any help would be appreciated!

As it sounds like sleep is working properly and just the indicator is not flashing, try resetting your System Management Controller:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964?viewlocale=en_US
If you scroll about half way down the above page, you'll see the types of things that resetting the SMC may cure (generally power related). Just be sure to follow the instructions for your particular machine as they vary from machine to machine.

  • Sleep light not coming on

Hello, I have a late 2006 Black MacBook, and I have noticed that the sleep indicator light does not come on unless I press on the top cover in that corner. Is this a loose connection that I can fix, or is it something that I need to replace?

There is a small ribbon cable from the sleep light and remote control sensor, and it is possible that it could be loose where it joins to the hard drive connector. As this connection is incredibly small and delicate, and can only be accessed by removing the keyboard/topcase, hard drive and connector, it would probably be best to leave it as there is a risk of causing more serious damage.

  • MBP - no display - solid sleep light...  HELP

    Hi all -
Brand new holiday Mac user here... i've searched, yet can't get the specifics i'm in search of...
I just cracked the seal on my new Mac Book Pro 20 minutes ago... after initial set up, I got the message to download the new EFI update... after funning update, i then shut down as instructed... now, NOTHING... my Mac Book won't come back on...
Can anyone help me here... i'm losing my mind wondering what's goin on with my new $2000 toy, before I've had a chance to enjoy it...
i've tried all the various resets and battery pulls... nothing is working - light just glowing at me...
thx a million and Happy New Year -

You need to use the Firmware Restoration CD:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/firmwarerestorationcd12.html
You'll need another computer to burn the CD on, then follow the instructions in the article to the letter. After that your MBP should be fine.

  • Sleep light constant

When my new MacBook Pro goes to sleep after the 3 mins specified in Energy Saver, the little light on the front edge is constant.
However when I manually put it to sleep it oscillates in brightness.
    Is something wrong?
The display sleeps but is the computer sleeping or not?
    thanks
    Pete

You might want to check the settings in energy saver. If you put the Mac to sleep from the  menu, it will go to sleep immediately. If you let it go to sleep by itself, it will follow what is set in the energy saver preferences, which may be a longer delay. If you wait long enough, you should eventually see the sleep light.
If the sleep light is not pulsing, it's safest to assume the computer has not yet gone to sleep. If you place it in a bag, be sure the sleep light is pulsing--otherwise it is not really asleep.

  • Since I installed Lion on my macbook the LED light does not pulse when I close the screen - the sleep function does not work.

Since I installed Lion on my macbook the LED light does not pulse when I close the screen - the sleep function does not work neither when chosen after pressing the button nor chosen in the apple menu..

I have had the same problem but on another forum it was suggested that disabling internet sharing would solve this. This fix seems to work on my machine - why it works I do not understand

  • MBP Won't Sleep automatically. Sleep light on. Not pulsing. Drive spinning.

I can get my new MBP SR to sleep when I tell it to but it won't sleep when it's supposed to according to my Energy Saver preferences.
Instead of sleeping, the screen goes dark and the sleep light stays on at medium - no pulsing. I can hear the hard drive still spinning. I tried changing my screen saver to one of the original Apple settings (Computer Name) but that didn't help. I'm going to try throwing away my Energy Saver prefs.
    Any suggestions?
BTW - I took a closer look and I was a bit surprised at how many posts there are for the MacBook Pro on the Apple.com discussions. The most posts per day of any model by far. I know its a very popular Mac but this model seems to have more problems than we are able to solve. That worries me. Anybody else noticing this?
    -Todd

I had exactly the same issue and needed three hours to find out the reason. It was the Bluetooth Mighty Mouse. I had to disselect the *third option* in the *bluetooth preferences*. I have a German-language OS X so I don't know the exactly expression but it affects the ability for bluetooth devices to weak up the system.
If you have EyeTV 2: This application must not be running. If you have scheduled recordings that doesn't matter it will record anyway: It will wake up the Mac - record the thing - go to sleep again.
I have several devices connected to the MBP: Three external enclosures with harddisk drives (2xFW800, 1xUSB without sleep function), EyeTV 610, speakers - all those things did not prevent the system for going to sleep. All those devices can be left attached - up and running. The FW harddisks will go to sleep the USB not.

  • I have a PB G4 that won't start. It shows the gray apple screen, shows the blue screen, and then the screen goes black, and "sleep" light pulses.

I have a PB G4 that won't start. It shows the gray apple screen, shows the blue screen, and then goes black. The sleep light pulses. From there, I can't turn it off normally. I have tried restarting the PMU. And I have tried unplugging the ac adaptor and removing the battery. From there I have plugged only the ac adaptor in, and it will begin to start but do the same thing once it shows the blue screen.
I tried only using the battery (without plugging in the ac adaptor) and the same thing happens. I tried starting the computer while holding down CTRL, Option, P, and R, waiting to hear the start up chimes 3 times, and then holding Shift as it starts up. But I still get the black screen once I see the blue one, and the computer's sleep light pulses.
I need something very important from this computer. And was able to start it last night. I did not shut down the computer, and was going to take it to a friends to use his printer today. The computer was in sleep mode in the morning.
    Thanks for any help!
    Gina

What your describing could be a logic board or memory issue.
You did or did not hear 3 startup chimes?  If you hear 3 chimes when you start it, that would indicate a memory problem.  Try reseating the memory to see if that makes a difference. If you have 2 RAM cards, try one then the other in each slot. If you have 1 RAM card, move it to the other slot. Powerbooks can develop one bad slot.
You may need to pull the hard drive out of the Powerbook, put it into an external case, then read it from another mac.

  • Sleep light firmware update did not work altogether

    Original 1.6GHz iMac G5
    10.4.3
The intention was simple. I wanted to run the sleep light firmware to dim the sleep light pulses during the early morning hours. So I installed the firmware package and then went to run the firmware update. At the end of the update, I get an error that goes something like this: "An unexpected error occured. The software was not updated." I was then told to shut down my computer to try again. But I can't try again, because when I go to run the firmware package again, I am told that my firmware is up to date. Yet the sleep light is the same intensity as before, no matter what hour of the day (whether it is 23:53 or 1:53, as examples) I set the time for. I gave the sleep function some time (between two pulses and 5 minutes for some tests) for the dimming effect to occur potentially, but it never did.
    Now what do I do?
    Specifically:
[1] How do I get to rerun the firmware so that I can get the light dimmer?
[2] Why did the error even occur and prevent the firmware from being updated?

Reinstallation of the package led me back to the ~"Firmware is up to date" message, so now I'll try the chat agent. (In the future, link me to where the chat agent is, because I did not find it until I did a general search from the main website, and searching is a huge pet peeve of mine.)

  • Sleep indicator light not working after upgrading to Snow Leopard

Hello all, I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard on my mid-2007 Macbook Pro (Macbook Pro 3,1, 2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM) and after the upgrade the sleep light no longer comes on when I shut the lid or when the display is powered off.
Not a huge deal, but might be an issue if I can't remember if I shut the computer down or put it to sleep last—I did not do a clean install, but would anyone happen to know something I could try before resorting to that?
Thanks, your help is much appreciated!

Have you tried Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)?

    Lao Bo,
yes, you can locate and copy a file from your HD to a USB key using UNIX commands. If you know the exact name of the file which you’re trying to locate, try this:
    find / -iname filename -print
This command will search your entire internal disk for the particular filename. If you know that it’s within a particular user account, then you can save search time with this variation:
    find /Users/username -iname filename -print
Either variation of this command will print all files found which have the given filename. Presuming that you’re able to identify the correct file, you can copy it to a USB key using the command
    cp -p filename_returned_by_find /Volumes/USB_volume
If you’re not sure which volume name your USB key has, this command will show you what the possibilities are:
    ls /Volumes
Please let me know if you have any trouble with these commands.
