Solid State Disk & Memory boost ?
I have Samsung SSD Pro 512GB. and Toshiba qosmio X775 3dv80 laptop.
Is it possible to make a partition on SSD and then use this partition to increase system memory on Win 8.1 Pro ?
Is it usefull or not and what is the limit of partition size for optimum system memory increase ?

Database performance on Solid state disks
Folks,
anyone has experience on running database on solid state disks ? what is the performance improvement ?Dumb question-- is your database I/O bound? Or is it CPU bound? Or does it spend a lot of time reading data that has been cached in memory?
Many systems will bottleneck on things other than physically reading and writing data to disk, in which case improving disk performance won't help much. Some systems that are bottlenecked on disk performance will actually be slower on this sort of architecture because the faster physical reads swamp some other resource (i.e. the CPU) creating an even bigger bottleneck. Some systems that are bottlenecked on disk performance will be faster with faster disks. That's not something we can predict from a forum post.
As of yet, I haven't worked with a system that would derive sufficient benefit from solid state disks to justify their cost. I'm sure there are systems out there, though, that would.

Hi All,
I recently have started using a solid-state drive (SSD) in my laptop, and it really flies (Intel X-25).
However, I am quite perturbed about the performance of Diadem 11.1 in loading files off this disk. Loading medium sized TDMS files (300 MB with 20 MB index files) seems to stall, ie the progress bar does not really move for long periods of time.
There is no problem with the disk, random reads and writes are exceptional on this SSD, and have not noticed this slowdown with any other applications. Any idea what is going on here?
Also, to muddy the situation, I am using this on Windows 7. Reading from a USB hard-drive seems to work as normal, so I figure its not the OS.
Any one else notice these kinds of problems?
nrp
CLABrad,
I tried using the load menu, it seems to make a bit of difference in that the loading progress bar goes a bit quicker, but it still seems to take its merry time, around 5 to 10 minutes. The hard drive light on my laptop does not even come on for tens of
seconds at a time when it is loading the original file, then there is a
burst of activity, then nothing again for like 30 seconds etc. Diadem CPU utilisation is very low during all this time and there is nothing else being done on the CPU.
The data is mostly DBLs, about 10 to 15 channels.
Slightly more weird, if I save the dataset once it has loaded (to compact the index file), then the subsequent loads are amazingly quick. I know you are probably thinking its just cached in memory (I have seen this before with a traditional hard disk), but the file loads in about 5 seconds from a cold-boot!
SSDs have very very good random read speeds, so even if the file was highly fragmented it should still be quite quick.
I have a pretty quick laptop (dual core mobile processer) with 4 GB of RAM. I have no problem loading four of these data sets into memory (reloading them after they have been saved), the load goes very quickly and when its done Diadem is happily using 2.5 GB of the RAM and there is no paging to the swap file.
I will never get permission to post the file unfortunately...
Any other ideas?
ps: you are right, 300 MB is more of a baby TDMS file... about 1 GB is medium sized ;-)

Anyone try a Solid-State Disk as PS Scratch Disk?
Has anyone tried using one of the new solid state drives such as the Intel X-18M as a Photoshop scratch disk? These have very low latency and ought to boost performance quite a lot. But I'd rather not spend the money without hearing if anyone's made the jump and likes the results.
I'm waiting for price to come down....the OCZ's are to avoided for now as they have issues with the sata controller bottlenecking the data causing stuttering/freezes.
But, this year should be good for SSD's as we are seeing 240mb/s and 200mb/s read/write speed drives starting to emerge....and the price is starting to fall......a bit...finally.
Best bet is to hold off until the SLC drives are affordable. MLC drives are OK, from what I can tell, but they will be slower. -

Solid state "disk" problem (additional to benchmark PPBM5 problem)
Just to give the discussion the right name from this point on. The benchmark PPBM5 test, as discussed in an earlier discussion, has led (thanks to Bill Gehrke) to the conclusion that the disk setup is very poor, and possibliy causes the problems in my system.
Asking the company who build the system they answerd that the OS and programma's are located a solid state (principally a faster system than a normal drive) C.
The projects run on two other disks D and E (1T), 7200 rpm and a third disk H (750G) 7200rpm.
The question is:
1. Does PPRO and Audition accept the "solid state configuration? Can this maybe gives the problem of slow working drives
2. If solid state is not accepted by Adobe, is is advisable to run the OS (Windows 7) on the solid state C and place all other programms on a seperate disk D?
3. Or is it advisable to replace the (principally faster) solid state module for a fast normal drive 72000 rpm. with the OS and all the programms on it?CANStageVideo wrote:

Texas RamSan Solid State Storage Appliance and Oracle VM 3.x
Has anyone had success with using a Texas Memory System RamSAN 810 (solid state appliance) and Fiber Channel controllers with Oracle VM 3.x
I believe any Fiber Channel device should work as shared storage, but looking for some extra confirmation that there were no issues before actually buying.
Thanks for any information.886374 wrote:
In playing with OVM 3.0 so far, I see that local storage (as the accelerator cards would show up as) is not really appropriate for Production Systems. It appears I can create a Repository on these physical disks and then present them to the VM guest. Then add these cards as my Oracle ASM disks for my "fast" storage, and do the same with the FiberChannel storage for my "slower" disks. Because of the Local Storage used for part of the VM guest, we would not be able to Live Migrate or have High availability I believe. Is this correct? Correct.
If we have the two servers as mentioned above. Could I take the database VM down and move it to the other server (ie Cold Migration)? The local storage (ie the accelerator cards) could physically be moved from one physical host to the other, but I am not sure, since this is virtualized disk, if this would be allowed or how it could be recognized on the other Oracle VM Server. This might be a "dream", but might be something we would like to do if an emergency arose or if more maintenance needed to be done on Server 1. Any comments? You would have to shutdown the VM, migrate it to an unassigned folder, edit the VM, remove the local storage from Server 1, migrate to Server 2 and add the local storage from Server 2. Whether or not this means moving your hardware is up to you.
Does anyone have other solutions to run Solid State disks (approximately 2TB worth) and Oracle VM, running a single guest that runs the database? We have been unable to find iSCSI or FiberChannel enclosures that can handle solid state drives in the 1 to 2 TB range of capacity. So perhaps there are other enclosures out there that can act as Shared Storage that can operate with SSDs. Thank you for any comments and suggestions.I know the Sun storage appliances use hybrid storage, i.e. a mix of SSD/spinning disks, but I don't know the details. Our Exadata machines have 5TB of Flash storage per cell, so I know we have such options. -
External solid state drive for scratch disk?
After doing everything i can find to optimize my hardware/software for doing 3D animation in Ps Ext CS6. I still cannot render an animation to video using the Ray Traced Final setting. (Ray Traced Draft, no problem.) The last time I tried (after repairing disk permissions), at least Ps did not crash and give me the same old crash report (Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV) Exception Codes: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS at 0x00000007a0020000). This time I just got an error msg that my request could not be completed. (Progress?) Checking Activity Monitor, I could see that my available RAM, which was 13 GB when I started the render was now less than 1 GB (761 MB).
So, I have come to the conclusion that my 16 GB of RAM and 300 GB available for virtual memory on my HD is not enough for rendering the type of 3D animation I am trying to do. Would you agree? Also, I have read it is not good to use the same HD your program is installed on for a scratch disk, so I am considering getting an external solid state drive to use as a scratch disk.
Whaddaya think? Does this sound like a good solution for me?
Thanks!

Lightroom and solid state hard disks
I'm looking to speed up Lightroom as much as possible within reason (version 3 on a Mac) and one possibility that occurred to me is to put Lightroom and it's catalog on a somewhat smaller 80-120 GB (and therefore less expensive) solid state hard disk. I'm wondering if Lightroom interacts with the system enough that I wouldn't gain much? I would think that I would get a pretty good speed bump...
Pete Marshall says:
SSD's are great for the OS and apps. They may not be so good for the catalog itself as write speeds are not good. If I was you I would get a small SSD to use as the boot drive and put the catalog and files on seprate fast traditional hard drives.
Write and read speed of currently available SSDs blow away hard disk drives in any configuration. Look here:
http://www.harddrivebenchmark.net/high_end_drives.html
SSDs are more expensive per GB than HDDs, but you don't need a large 1TB+ drive to increase system performance! I work with Intel who is one of the top SSD manufacturers and R&D companies. Intel is working with Micron on joint program to reduce cost of SSDs. Intel just announced their new SSD 510 series:
Intel SSD 510 Specification
SATA 6Gb/s Sustained Bandwidth Performance
(Iometer* Queue Depth 32)
— 250 GB:
Sequential Read: Up to 500 MB/s
Sequential Write: Up to 315 MB/s
— 120 GB:
Sequential Read: Up to 450 MB/s
Sequential Write: Up to 210 MB/s
Compared to a high performance HDD:
WD Caviar Black
Samsung HD103UJ
HDTach
Burst (MB/s)
232.6
204.5
Random Access (ms)
12.1
13.7
Average Read (MB/s)
89.5
96.8
Average Write (MB/s)
79.9
84.4
I have no experience running LR on SSD, but putting your LR catalog, RAW cache, and preview files on an SSD should provide a real performance boost. -
Does anyone know which Creative MP3 players use Solid State storage media rather than Disk Dri'ves?I need a unit that uses Solid State memory and has a capacity of about 8-0GB. I've heard that the Zen V plus is this kind of device, can anyone confirm this? Thanks!?
The Zen V Plus models are all flash memory (no moving parts) storage devices. Including the Zen V Plus 8gb unit.

How do I copy my operating system to a solid state drive and make it the disk I boot from?
How do I copy my operating system to a solid state drive and make it the disc I boot from?
Where is your operating system now? Basically, you clone it from wherever it is now to the SSD:
Clone Lion/Mountain Lion using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue button.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the SSD. Source means the drive now holding OS X.
