Solid State drive 512gb, does it need to be the primary drive with final cut loaded on it?
I'm having some trouble editing HD with my current default hard drive, so I thought about buying a ssd, but now do I have to move all my apps and OS to the ssd? If so, how do I do that? Or can I just move my render folder to the ssd and make it my primary scratch disk? I knew I should of got the ssd but it totally slipped my mind when I bought the Mac.
You usually clone the OS and apps only to SSD.
SSD is useful for audio, can be used for scratch where you are short RAM for CS5.
A WD Black 1.5TB $108 is fine, maybe a couple.
Software stripe RAID for editing, one for system, and for backup - you could go with WD Green 2TB for backups.

First and foremost, clone and clean up and repair, even erase and restore from clone, with your current system and figure out why or what is wrong now.
People buy $$$ ! SSDs then want to limit the writes to preserve the life of the cells and the performance. I feel they are tools to be used.
You never want to leave just the OEM hard drive, or leave other hard drive bays empty. Use 'em.

When you import a 3D model in Photoshop, it is imported as a Layer (smart object). And, yes, you can edit 3D objects in Photoshop and import them into FCPX—AS a photohop image (you cannot manipulate the 3D nature of the object in FCPX.) You can however create an animation in PS, convert to layers from frames and import that into fcpx. You can then edit the compound clip created to make use of those "animated" layer/frames. (I'm not sure how far I'd "push it" though...fwiw, at that point, it might be better to export the animation from PS and import the MOV into FCPX.)
You can also make edits in PS after the psd is imported and fcpx will do live updates (after saving the psd file, of course.) 3D objects in PS are a special kind of Smart Object, and Smart Objects will translate to Motion and FCPX (they will be rasterized as a single layer, though.) -
I need to convert AVCHD to work with Final Cut Studio
I recently purchased a Sony HD camcorder only to discover it records in AVCHD which is not supported by apple FCS.
Also apple is not supported by sony so the software that came with the camera does not work with my Mac Pro.....
Is there any way i can convert AVCHD files on my mac to work with FCS??

I have the Sony SR1 camera. I'm not sure if that's the one you have. Anyway, I purchased the Blackmagic Intensity card for $250, now I can capture directly from the camera into whatever codec you want. Well almost. At least you have the option of using Uncompressed, DVCProHD, ProRes etc.
I tried editing AVCHD natively using Vegas, but that's not the way I want to work. I also havent found any decent way of converting the files. It's a huge headache. I'm not sure I'd want to edit AVCHD native anyway. It's pretty processor intensive, and I just don't see much of a difference between the files the camcorder captures, and transcoding them upon capture through the Intensity card. -
I have an iMac 17" 1.83ghz intel core from 2006. I need to reformat the hard drive. Which system do I reinstall - the system disk in came with or can I install 10.6.8 which is what it's running now. And does the system have to be for an iMac?

All the computers with more than one drive bay. What kind of computer do you have? Is it a laptop or desktop? My Pavilion DV7 1285dx laptop has two drive bays and I'm running a Corsair 128gb SSD as the primary drive and the laptop's spinner drive as the backup. It works great.

If it were me, I'd go with a solid state drive, as the prices have come down recently and the performance improvement is noticeable. -
Does a secondary SATA drive failure affect the primary drive?
I have two internal drives, and the secondary drive failed. The system would not boot until I removed the secondary drive. Why would the secondary drive failure affect the primary drive?
A severely corrupt directory on any drive can prevent booting from hard drives and even DVD and CDs that otherwise should boot because the system still 'looks' to see if and where other system drives are located.
That can require pulling the drive in order to boot, put it in a Firewire or USB case, and only after the system is up - and maybe Disk Warrior or TechTool Pro launched - connect the drive.
Just one more reason to keep backups of your drives, and multiple boot drives (working backup, test system, emergency only, are good to have).
Why it is failing is another matter, need for a good solid UPS (I was doing an install that takes 45 minutes when we had an outage, probably due to severe weather and strain on the grid). Luckily I have extra runtime. -

It depends on who fixes it. Assuming that the drive needs to be replaced, you could have Apple do it (most expensive), a local computer repair shop (less expensive) or do-it-yourself (least expensive).
There's really no 'fixing' a hard drive - it either works or it doesn't. What leads you to believe that your drive needed repair (or replacement)?

I am selling my 2013 MacBook Air and i need to figure out how to wipe all my information from the computer before selling it.
Any help will be appreciated, im ready to slam this computer through a wall.Follow these instructions step by step to prepare a Mac for sale:
Step One - Back up your data:
A. If you have any Virtual PCs shut them down. They cannot be in their "fast saved" state. They must be shut down from inside Windows.
B. Clone to an external drive using using Carbon Copy Cloner.
1. Open Carbon Copy Cloner.
2. Select the Source volume from the Select a source drop down menu on the left side.
3. Select the Destination volume from the Select a destination drop down menu on the right
side.
4. Click on the Clone button. If you are prompted about creating a clone of the Recovery HD be
sure to opt for that.
Destination means a freshly erased external backup drive. Source means the internal
startup drive.
Step Two - Prepare the machine for the new buyer:
1. De-authorize the computer in iTunes! De-authorize both iTunes and Audible accounts.
2, Remove any Open Firmware passwords or Firmware passwords.
3. Turn the brightness full up and volume nearly so.
4. Turn off File Vault, if enabled.
5. Disable iCloud, if enabled: See.What to do with iCloud before selling your computer
Step Three - Install a fresh OS:
A. Snow Leopard and earlier versions of OS X
1. Insert the original OS X install CD/DVD that came with your computer.
2. Restart the computer while holding down the C key to boot from the CD/DVD.
3. Select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu; repartition and reformat the internal hard drive.
Optionally, click on the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass.
4. Install OS X.
5. Upon completion DO NOT restart the computer.
6. Shutdown the computer.
B. Lion and Mountain Lion (if pre-installed on the computer at purchase*)
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because
it is three times faster than wireless.
1. Restart the computer while holding down the COMMAND and R keys until the Mac OS X
Utilities window appears.
2. Select Disk Utility from the Mac OS X Utilities window and click on the Continue button.
3. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list. Click
on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
4. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on the Security button
and set the Zero Data option to one-pass.
5. Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
6. Quit DU and return to the Mac OS X Utilities window.
7. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
8. Upon completion shutdown the computer.
*If your computer came with Lion or Mountain Lion pre-installed then you are entitled to transfer your license once. If you purchased Lion or Mountain Lion from the App Store then you cannot transfer your license to another party. In the case of the latter you should install the original version of OS X that came with your computer. You need to repartition the hard drive as well as reformat it; this will assure that the Recovery HD partition is removed. See Step Three above. You may verify these requirements by reviewing your OS X Software License. -
Why does imovie need to keep the original file after I have edited?
I record basketball games with my ipad and I keep the footage but cut the video so I can make highlights for the season. Thing is, these original videos are usually close to 10GB each and over an hour long.
I might have 5 minutes of highlights when Im done.
So to save space in my Imovie projects, I kept the clips i want and deleted the videos. When I came back to add more video to my season project, it said missing file.
Does it need to save the entire original media after I cut the video? I dont want to keep every game on my computer, I just want to keep what I cut and throw the rest out. But Imovie is asking for the original file.
Any solutions for this, or do I need to upgrade to a more professional editor?Hi
You are using a - Non Destructing Video Editing program.
Meaning that Your movie in making ==> Project - DO NOT contain any movie or material at all - BUT only a text document pointing to where material is stored e.g. folder iMovie Event's, other hard disks, DVDs, CDs or USB-memories.
And if any of these storage's are moved or disconnected - iMovie get's lost and can not View Your Project.
iMovie - do not have any "Media Managing Function" as FinalCut Pro (as it can reconnect moved material and create a complete contaning folder)
Even when You Shared Your movie - there still will be links back to material - to make it possibly to further editing's, and Sharing in other resolutions.
This is the cost of working this way. So I use an external hard disk for storage
- MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted - UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange will not work for VIDEO
- Moving Video Event's - MUST BE DONE WITHIN iMovie Application - ELSE connections will be broken - meaning HARD to IMPOSSIBLY to mend later. Be aware !
All other material I store in Folders named as movie project + date - all from start on the external Drive.

Almost all new motherboards today only have a primary ide channel and the rest are SATA.
I need inputs regarding the dvd drive which is shown in device manager as located on the primary ide channel while the hard drive is located on the secondary channel. Because I would like to update the dvd drive to the latest firmware (version 1.06; to be able to recognize more blank media) but the LG site recommends that the drive (dvd) be located on the secondary ide channel.
I already tried to uninstall every channel from the device manager but all would still be the same after reboot, dvd drive on primary, hard drive on secondary.
Current ide mode in BIOS is set to AHCI+IDE mode, DMA modes are fine (UDMA4 for dvd, UDMA5 for hard drive), boot sequence (1st=HD, 2nd=DVD, 3rd=Floppy drive)
Tried switching to IDE mode only in BIOS but would not detect the optical drive. Never tried RAID+IDE mode since I only have a single hard drive.
I'm not sure but if I try to update the firmware, it might instead try to update the hard drive's firmware instead of the optical drive and make the hard drive unusable.
I would like to know if anybody with this same situation was able to successfully update the optical drive's firmware or is there some way to place the optical drive on the secondary ide channel and the hard drive on primary for me to follow and replicate the process.

Just received the solution from another forum where I posted the same problem.
They said that the flash program for the firmware will detect the drive on its own and would not flash other devices except the optical drive itself. So its pretty safe, and I can confirm this since I just flashed my ODD a little over a while ago and everything went fine. No errors.
Though I'm speaking for the brand of ODD I own and may be different for other brands so take precautions as well. It may be different for the others. -
I have an existing mini mac and 4 tb external drive.
My iTunes library exists on the external drive under /itunes...
I have purchased a new mini mac and I want to leave the library where it is on the external drive but move to new mini mac and have it show as it did on the old mini mac..

I have found multitude of articles about moving itunes to external drive or other similar things but I don't want to move itunes from the external drive, just change mini mac machines and have everything in itunes the same..
