Solid State or Thunderbolt for scratch drive?

My new MacPro is a speed demon - but the internal drive is TINY.  I work on huge PShop files, and even with a secondary external drive designated as Scratch Disk, I get frequent promps that boot disk is almost full (its not -just virtual memory overload). So I think the thing to do is have a dedicated (external) scratch disk, that is keep mostly free. I would think that a Solid State drive would be best for speed. But they are $$$. Wondering if I would notice the difference if a Thunderbolt drive was used instead. They are comparatively more affordable, but abut 130mbps as opposed to around 400mbps.
Anyone using a similar setup?
Suggestions?
Thanks

You can still go with a Thunderbolt2 interface with a Thunderbolt case that supports PCIe and add SSDs, I would try to get the new devices, you need less, they are 3x faster than "traditional" SSDs.
Mac Pro => Thunderbolt2 => TB2 expansion case with PCIe slots, using
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/Thunderbolt/External-Drive/OWC/ThunderBay-4 $449 (no drives) but dual TB2 interface
and then using the same blade technology as your internal unit you now have, meaning you should be able to use 2+ and get 2.4GB/sec. for your scratch.  Basically extending your boot drive with scratch that is at least as fast or a multiple of that.

  • Anyone try a Solid-State Disk as PS Scratch Disk?

Has anyone tried using one of the new solid state drives such as the Intel X-18M as a Photoshop scratch disk? These have very low latency and ought to boost performance quite a lot. But I'd rather not spend the money without hearing if anyone's made the jump and likes the results.

I'm waiting for price to come down....the OCZ's are to avoided for now as they have issues with the sata controller bottlenecking the data causing stuttering/freezes.
But, this year should be good for SSD's as we are seeing 240mb/s and 200mb/s read/write speed drives starting to emerge....and the price is starting to fall......a bit...finally.
Best bet is to hold off until the SLC drives are affordable. MLC drives are OK, from what I can tell, but they will be slower.

  • Which Solid State Hard Disk for Satellite Pro L670?

I have a Satellite Pro L670 which I want to configure for presentation purposes and have to re-load the operating system anyway.
Rather than over-write the existing disk, I thought it would be better to get a second one to fit instead.
Replacing the current (old-fashioned) spinning disk with a solid state one seems to me the best way to go.
Has anyone else fitted a solid state hard disk to a Satellite Pro?
For budget reasons I am planning to go for a 120GB capacity which will be enough.
However I have yet to find out from Toshiba what they might recommend. Anyone else yet gone this route?

    Hi
Theoretically any SATA SSD drive should be compatible because the notebook supports an SATA controller.
But in some cases it could be possible that an SSD drive would not be handled properly. In such cases the SDD drive manufacturers provides different firmware updates
So before purchasing an SSD drive check the support pages of SSD drive manufacturers for further details maybe an firmware update would be available

  • Esata vs fw800 user preferences set up for scratch drive

I would like to switch scratch disc capture from a current fw800 setup (and setting) to esata. I purchased a express card34 esata. scratch disc is an external 3.5in 750gb 7200rpm hdd esata
My question is this: should I make an adjustment in user preferences in regards to "limit real-time" Currently i have it set for fw800 at 42mb.
Also my deck is connected via fw800 to scratch drive. Will this present a complication when capturing via capture devise fw800> scatch drive esata> fcp?
I have search the manual and here without any references to this.

Found it. Page 1820 of the FCP 7 user manual (.pdf)
+Limit real-time video to N MB/s: Final Cut Pro uses this number to limit how many video streams can play back from your scratch disk in real time. This is useful when multiple editing systems are sharing the same media (such as a storage area network, or SAN), or when you have a scratch disk with a limited data rate, such as a portable computer hard disk.+
+For example, suppose you try to play a sequence with six simultaneous video tracks containing DV media, and Final Cut Pro warns you that frames were dropped during playback. If you then try to play a sequence with five simultaneous video tracks and no frames are dropped, you know that your scratch disk can handle no more than five simultaneous DV video streams. Since DV has a data rate of 3.6 MB/sec., you can select the “Limit real-time video to” option and enter 18 MB/sec. (5 x 3.6 MB/sec.) in the number field. Now, if a sequence requires a sustained data rate of more than 18 MB/sec. for+
+playback, Final Cut Pro shows a red render bar over this portion of the sequence.+
+Note: Final Cut Pro always allows a single video stream to play, even if the data rate limit you set is below the data rate of a single video stream. For example, if you set the data rate limit to 1 MB/sec., Final Cut Pro would still play back a single DV video stream, even though its data rate is 3.6 MB/sec.+

  • Backup for Scratch Drive?

I'm setting up backups for my hard drives. My Photoshop CS 5 scratch drive is on a separate drive. Should I back it up?

There is no useful data there, so no.  Kind of like a scratch pad when it is working.

  • Advice please: which is best? Internal or external for scratch drive?

My new iMac has so much hard drive space, I could use its internal drive for my scratch disk, as I don't do that much FCE. Is that a mistake? Is it better to have the media on an external drive?

There's a lot of debate about this.
    Will it work? Yes.
Will it work fine? Yes, until your disk gets about 50-60% full. After that point as you use up more & more space you may notice an increasing incidence of dropped frames, stutters, etc. This is due to the physical characteristics of the hard drive. I limit my system HD to about 20-30% full (not including video files) and I don't have problems editing with FCE.
Is it preferable to use an external drive? Some people are convinced so in all cases. Certainly if you're doing a lot of video editing an external drive is a good idea. And it's always a good idea for backup !

  • 7200 or 5400 portable hard drive for scratch drive?

I am trying to decide whether to buy a f7200rpm or 5400rpm portable hard drive to store some of my video footage on but seem to have conflicting answers on the topic. Basically, I need to offload some of my unedited footage from my MBP as it is taking up lots of room but I need also to have this with me when travelling so that I can continue working on it, therefore the need for a small portable hard drive. I have pretty much decided to get one of the G-tech mini drives, but should I get a faster 7200rpm for video, or will this make no difference, in which case a 5400rpm will have more capacity for the same price. I emailed G-Tech and their reply was a bit vague, basically saying that with firewire 800 there "might be a slight increase in performance", but I am still not sure what this means in real terms when working with video.
I thought the best place to ask was here, so if anyone can advise I would be grateful, thanks.

I have a single G-Tech mini fw400 case with a 5400 rpm drive that is perfectly useful for capturing and editing simple DV. But, I purchased it for simply capturing video while I was out of the studio. I would not use it for serious multi layer editing. If pressed, I would guess the limits have more to do with it being fw400 than the rotational speed.
What a faster rotational speed often does is give you faster seek times.
Still, if I were in the market today, I'd go with something like a two drive miniRAID system (eg Caldigit VRmini) that can connect via FW400, 800 or eSATA.

  • Solid State Drive Upgrade Questions

    Hello!!
I'm looking at removing the optical drive (recently deceased) from my MacBook Pro as I rarely use it and can use my friend's external one for the rare occasions I'd need it, and replacing it with a second hard drive. I've heard that this port can't reliably handle 6Gbps speeds so I'm going to put my 1TB mechanical drive in place of the optical drive and put a 64GB solid state in as the "main" drive.
My intention is as you might expect, to use the SSD for OS X and applications.
My first question, is what folders do I need to copy onto that SSD? I'll be using Carbon Copy Cloner to do this task. Do I have to select every folder on the source drive and just unticking any media and data that I'm going to keep on the mechanical 1TB?
When I have the two drives installed, where will my 1TB data appear? Will it still show up in Finder as it does with a single drive, or will appear as another storage device as if it were external? If it's as another device, can I make OS X make it look like everything is on the same drive?
I don't know a huge amount about this stuff, I know enough to do the copying and changing of hardware but not that much about working with OS X in Terminal or anything like that so please be patient if I ask lots of "How to" questions If there are online guides already answering my questions it'd be great to have some links, I've had a hard time finding them!
    Thanks

Solid state drives have yet to become a worthwhile venture as their use in high end computing has not yet been proven.  One of the biggest problems with SSD's is the fact that they cannot come to par with traditional drives in terms of random write speeds.  Most people take a performance hit with these types of drives except for the exception of one company, which has gotten speeds up to traditional drive speeds.
However, sequential read and write speeds are marginally faster than traditional drives, which gives u a boost on boot, which is noticably faster.  For most business users, the upgrade to an SSD will not yield any tangible results except when transferring bulk files back and forth, at which point one would notice a significant performance hit.  Regarding battery life, the first time I used a SSD, it didn't help with battery life at all that was noticable.  However, it was well worth the upgrade as it made the laptop literally silent and cool.  It's surprising how much sound hard drives make these days ....
My two cents is that the SSD is really an expensive looks-only aesthetic mod but in terms of CG heavy users - not worth it yet unless you can run it in RAID 0 or 5 with 4+ drives, bringing performance quite up to par.  At that point, a desktop machine running RAM drives from Gigabyte might even be better....

  • Solid State Hard Drive Issues.....

    Hello.
I had a Sattelite P-500 built by Toshiba last spring & it's beginning to give me trouble. It is a dual hard drive model, one 60 gig solid state & a 500 gig storage drive. My problem is that all but less than 1 gig is used up on the solid state drive, yet when I add up everything shown on the drive it comes to just under 29 gig. However on the "Computer" screen, the one that shows the different drives & devices, it shows that I have just  856 MB of 46.8 available on this drive. Also, when I run the onboard diagnostic tool, I get a "fail" on the hard drive.
    Any help will be appreciated

I called the Toshiba supprot line & the woman whom I spoke with, which I could barely understand, was less than helpful. Her only "advice" was to run the recovery disc & start over. When asked if this issue would return, she had no answer.
Somehow my 60 gig c drive is loading itself up. Why can't I see the extra space being swallowed up here?
Seems to be a LOT of very smart computer savvy people on this forum, could someone please help me out with this?

  • External solid state drive for scratch disk?

After doing everything i can find to optimize my hardware/software for doing 3D animation in Ps Ext CS6. I still cannot render an animation to video using the Ray Traced Final setting. (Ray Traced Draft, no problem.) The last time I tried (after repairing disk permissions), at least Ps did not crash and give me the same old crash report (Exception Type:  EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV) Exception Codes: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS at 0x00000007a0020000). This time I just got an error msg that my request could not be completed. (Progress?) Checking Activity Monitor, I could see that my available RAM, which was 13 GB when I started the render was now less than 1 GB (761 MB).
So, I have come to the conclusion that my 16 GB of RAM and 300 GB available for virtual memory on my HD is not enough for rendering the type of 3D animation I am trying to do. Would you agree? Also, I have read it is not good to use the same HD your program is installed on for a scratch disk, so I am considering getting an external solid state drive to use as a scratch disk.
Whaddaya think? Does this sound like a good solution for me?
    Thanks!

  • Where and what type of solid state drive should I buy for my early 2008 Mac Pro Desktop??

where can I buy and what type of solid state drive should I use to upgrade my early 2008 Mac Pro Desktop??

    Rick,
When you get a chance.... DSLReports is off line: their SQL server decided to take its indexes and access to data. Power. Not enough of the right kind of UPS. Same happened to StorageReview's "Drive Reliability Database" about 8-9 yrs ago.
    dslreports.com is offline
    Fri Apr 20 09:05:55 EDT 2012
SSD: Loading CS5 plus other little monsters might matter.
    Lots of small I/Os
latency of 1/100th where nanoseconds replace those "long" milliseconds
    System: Small and fast.
DLLoyd even goes for short-stroking drives to get and maintain highest I/O
The new 10k VRs hit 200MB/sec - I still use them and still find them useful, long lasting, feel responsive with whatever I ask of them. I know they get criticized and "cost too much"
Just bought a new WD Black and yes it is better than the 2008 model I was using.
600GB 10K $200 vs $150-220 for WD Black. your choice
I can destroy a 7.2k drive, I have brought ever 10K drive back after a simple WD Extended Test in Lifeguard.
    I don't really care about $$/GB or I wouldn't have just bought Intel 128GB $149
Database: the pros put the index in memory and page fix (virtual volumes in memory; cache; hold disk drive index in memory). Caching storage has been around for almost 40 yrs.
Today you can use SSDs as front end cache to hold DB indexes and frequent data for web servers and such adn use slower secondary storage.
    SSD + SAS + 4TB storage
Separating the system from data: #1 must
Having data on array: been what I use
I put a large photo library on 2 x 10K VRs vs SSD and couldn't tell much difference (SSD is soundless of course) But my WD Blacks make as much noise and run 15*C hotter than those 10K (not what you expect?)
While 10K and 7.2K are in the 140-180MB/sec range, they are in 3.0 to 12.0 ms seeks, not  0.01 ms.
People wonnder why shrink a drive to 2.5" (or why not go down to 1.8".
How long does it take to reposition a disk head? how often? the 10K VR travels on outer tracks at 70 MPH. Really trying to fly off into space.
It uses one step to find the "zip code" and then another DSP to find the "house."
True of any high density perpendicular recording mechanism.
And of course while the Raptor-X tried to find a home with famers, Cheetah buyers, the WD 10K line has more of a home where servers and small form factor drives - and 100s of them - can fit in a rackmount server I imagine.
Anyway.... if SR and DSLReports can drop out of site due to power and hardware failure and loss... we can learn some and hope to protect our own data and investments.

  • I have a iMac intel 2.4 GHz core 2 duo maxed out at 4 Gigs of memory. I wondering if it would be worthwhile for me to put a solid state drive in in place of the optical drive in order to squeeze a little more speed out of this thing.

I saw a description of using a solid state drive for the system and certain other programs in order to create a snappier response. My iMac certainly seems to drag at times and the drives don't look prohibitively expensive anymore. The article was about macbook pros, so I don't know if the iMac is as good an example. Anyhow, any thoughts?
    Jim

IMO, SSDs are too expensive, too small, and adding one to an iMac isn't a trivial undertaking.
As for improving performance, more RAM is better.

  • Setting Up SSD Solid State Drive for Cache...Help!

    Hello,
I am trying to configure my system to do really heavy special effects using After Effects and other programs.  I bought a new computer with specs below and a Solid State Drive for the cache as recommended in the White Papers.  I plug the SSD into a port on top of the machine.  I must have it configured wrong because I keep getting the message "disk cache folder cannot be the root of a volume."  I don't know how to configure this correctly so my work will use the SSD properly.  Can someone walk me through this?  Nicole  The SSD is a Seagate SSHD 1TB hybrid drive that is supposed to boot and perform like an SSD.  The motherboard is an Asus X79 and the processor is an i7 4820k (Ivy Bridge E) Thanks!

Open Windows Explorer (for Win7) which I think was renamed File Manager in Win8 and go to the "root" of the drive and right click and select New--Folder from the popup window

  • Solid State Hard Drive Replacement For HP ENVY TouchSmart 15-j053cl?

    Hello there,
I want to swap out my current 1TB harddrive from my year-and-a-half old HP ENVY with a 500 GB solid state harddrive that I just purchased from Amazon.
    Two questions:
    1) Is this solid state harddrive compatiable with my computer (specs below)?
    2) I want to reinstall windows onto the solid state harddrive after I install it (assuming its compatable).  How can I go about putting Windows 8 on a bootable usb drive to do this?  The computer does not have an optical drive and I don't have an external optical drive, so installing Windows via bootable usb is my only option.
I'm aware I can "clone" my PC onto the external harddrive if I wish, but I'd rather do a clean install if I can.

Please let me know any advice you may have.  Also, please feel free to ask any questions - hopefully I provided enough details.

Windows 8.1 has a built-in tool to make a recovery usb drive:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/create-usb-recovery-drive
The HP Backup and Recovery app can also do it. This is a factory clean install image and any data and programs you have added will be lost. If you have an external hard drive you can also do a backup with Windows File History. Then, add the backed up files to the factory install. You can also use File History to make a system image type backup and restore it to the new drive using a repair disk but this is virtually the same as a clone, which you said you do not want.
    Manual
Your service manual linked above. See page 47.
The Evo 850 is the best SSD on the market in my humble opinion and will work just fine for you.
