Solidworks/3d modeling on a macmini

Okay so I have used sketchUp, autoCAD, Adobe creative suite all successfully on a 2006 macbook, I'm now on my 3rd hard drive so have decided to ditch the laptop and buy a netbook for net and a macmini for creative stuff.
Anyway has anyone used solidworks on a macmini and how did it cope? i was told as its shared graphics it may not be great. I don't really want an imac and can't budget a mac pro.
So any thoughts.

I found answer to my first question - does OSX server work on a Mac Mini - yes

  • Adobe Acrobat 3D and SolidWorks 2006

    Hi there,
I was just wondering if anybody else experiences problems with Acrobat 3D and SolidWorks 2006. When I try to convert 3D models from Solidworks 2006 I get an error message: The file contains no displayable geometry.
Converting SolidWorks 2005 models causes no problems.
I am grateful for any help.
    Thx
    Daniel

    Hi,
    Thx for your replys too.
I put some sample files in the web, you can download them at:
    http://trshare.triumf.ca/~albers/
The frequency tripler is an converted SW2005 file. (no colours)
The BRF rotary mount files are a converted SW2006 file and a SW2006 sldprd file.
The laser beam is a sw2005 file and the converted pdf file.
I am using the programs on a Acer Notebook with a ATI X700 grafic card.
Driver Provider: ATI Technologies Inc. (Omega 2.6.87)
    Driver Date: 22.11.2005
    Driver Version: 8.201.0.0
    XP SP2
    SW2006 SP2
Adobe Acrobat 3D V7.0.7 Try out version
I tried different things to convert and the strange thing is Acrobat 3D can convert my SW2005 files but not the SW2006. Are the SW settings so important when you try to convert them in the explorer with right click and than convert to pdf? Because SW isn't started and all necessary informations should be in the file. So maybe it is the way my SW2006 files are saved.
I don't have my notebook with me at the moment but I will check the settings and put it also on the web folder for you.
Thank you very much and have a nice weekend.

  • Solidworks and Adobe putting it all together

    Hello,
I am struggling to understand how I can go from a SolidWorks 3D model to a usable animated training video for the web, hand held, and/or local computer. Our products are getting more complex and 3D training videos would be great. I do not have SolidWorks software so I need to get from a SolidWorks model to an animated training video. I understand that SolidWorks 2010 is not working with Adobe at the moment but if it was what would be the most efficient way to get this done. I currently have Adobe CS4 production premium. Can someone walk me through or at least tell me what Adobe software's will get this done.
So far I have created a jpg from SolidWorks, used Illistrator live trace to convert to vector. Imported to Flash and used Swift 3D express plug in.
This is not good enough for what I want to do. If I upgrade to Adobe CS5 production premium, will I be able to do this more efficiently? If so what would be the software path? Do I need something else?
    Thank you

  • SolidWorks 2008 Support

Any idea when A3D will support SolidWorks 2008, which was released in September? Now that the mechanical engineers at my company have upgraded to SW2008, I can't directly use their files in A3D and Toolkit (unsupported format message). Previously, I had been successfully creating technical documentation by manipulating the engineers' SW2007 models in Toolkit.
SW2008 can export U3D files, but the model tree heirachy is then lost.
I emailed Adobe customer support and the reply was simply "There is support for only up to SolidWorks 2007. There is no ETA, so
far, for an update that would add this format to the supported formats list."
It would be nice that when a major CAD package released an update, that A3D would follow closely behind.
In the meantime, does anyone have any other ideas for using SW2008 files in A3D/Toolkit?
    Thanks!

    Hi SWS,
I used the SolidWorks eDrawings 2008 (ver. 8.0.0.708) for the 3D capture and brought the model into A3D. Of course, in order to edit in Toolkit, it needs to be converted into the U3D format (vs. PRC). However, there are no U3D options listed in the '3D Format in PDF' drop-down list under the 'Import' tab of the 'Acrobat 3D Conversion' window. What am I missing? I haven't had to use 3D capture for some time as A3D version 8 was able to use SolidWorks 2007 models directly.
    Thanks!

  • Incorrect part orientation on import

I'm importing a SolidWorks part model, and when it opens in Acrobat the part orientation is completely different i.e., the part is now laying on its side so that the top view is actually looking at the left side of the part in SolidWorks. Perhaps there is a setting that can be changed?
I can change the views and create a default view that shows the correct orientation, but that seems like unnecessary work - plus when loading it shows the original incorrect orientation until it sorts itself out when it is fully loaded.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I found the same problem when capturing from the 3d visualisation application GOCAD. The only solution in this case was to capture the model when it was orientated in plan (overhead) view within GOCAD. This produced a correctly orientated model in adobe 3d.

Hello Vugie and Zach ...Few more favors plzzz
Is there a way I can focus and zoom in zoom out particular portion of the scene, I can do it along Z axis but it will zoom whole scene. I guess Camera Control setting but not getting how to do it.
    Also
    1. When I RUN a vi, change camera (spherical) position and STOP a vi,
next time I run my vi scene display shows last Camera position, Is there
a way that for every new RUN of a program Scene Display erases old
image and starts over again. Looks like re initializing Camera Position.
    2. Scene in Continuous loop and Camera Controller >> Spherical. Scene
display gives kind of broken and flashy display while changing camera
    position using mouse.
    3. If I translate any object and again translate-rotate to change center
of rotation, isn't it Total translation and then rotation.
    4. When I plan to show stretch/compress from one end, it will be again translating object half a distance similar to Pivot ???
Is there any easy way to find Translation you apply to move your center
of rotation, I waste lot of time when I import someone's vrml model, its
lot easy if I make my own using 3D geometries at least I know half a
    distance to move.
Also see another method I am trying in which I have all 3
objects imported as a separate vrml and I called via one vrml.  I tried
different translate-rotate combination but nothings working out

  • Can I use SoftMotion to simulate a PID motor control loop using a Solidworks model?

    Hi
I'm not a labVIEW user yet. But I probably will become one when I can do the following:
I have a Solidworks model of a complex machine with multiple servo motors. Can I use labVIEW plus SoftMotion to calculate the needed motor forces and aply these forces on the Solidworks model making some parts in the model move and can I get positional feedback from the Solidworks model which I can use in labVIEW to calculate the motor forces again. This way I could use labVIEW to simulate the complete motor control loop including some PID filtering.
I could find some posts about SoftMotion, but they all seem to handle about SoftMotion in combination with external hardware. But I would like to do a complete software simulation.
    I hope this is possible.

    Hi Melomania
Solidworks for SoftMotion works in an interesting manner. First SoftMotion runs in labview and plots a trajectory path based off the input from the user. The generated points are controlled by speed, velocity and acceleration. These generated points are sent to SolidWorks where the physics engine takes over. SolidWorks calculates the ammount of force required to move the component the given distance and also if there are any collisions that take place. Basically the whole process is open loop with no PID being implemented. The purpose for the software is to test your motion system for collisions and calculate the required torque for your motors to move and the velocities and accelerations provided. A system prototyped with SoftMotion Solidworks will still need to be tuned when constructed in the real world.
For your application I would look into Control Design and Simulation Toolkit.

  • 3D Solidworks Model with Temperature Sensors

    Hey all,
For my senior design project, I've been trying to create a incorporate my Solidworks model that I have previously into my Labview program. I have watched a few tutorials outlining different ways to incorporate a Solidworks model and test stress and movement of this model. For my application, I am trying to incorporate around 16 different heat sensors in different positions around this model in Labview. I want my program to give a 3D representation of the positions of these sensors in space so that the user knows exactly where a certain temperature reading is occurring. This way, the user can pinpoint the position in this model where the temperature is increasing or decreasing. I am having a great deal of trouble trying to create this code and haven't found any tutorials outlining similar situations as mine. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I could go about creating this code? How does one incorporate heat sensors into a Solidworks model via Labview? Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

    jab10015,
I initially saw this and asked Spicy to jump in because I thought you were trying to interface with Solidwords directly. Your latest post made me realize I had misunderstood the question, and I believe I have an answer for you. Just to make sure, you're wanting to take physical measurements and then map them on to a virtual 3D model within LabVIEW, correct?
If so, there is an express VI that you can find under the programming/graphics and sound/3d picture control/helpers that is called Sensor Mapping (provided you're running a LabVIEW 8.6 or higher). It sounds like it will do what you're after.
As far as documentation for it goes, you can find the manual page here:

  • 2006 MacMini Model A1176 cannot send video to Toshiba TV by S-video or ColorStream adapter

I attempted to hook my Mac Mini to my Toshiba Model 36AF41 TV. Since the TV does not have an HDVI input but does have both S-Video and ColorStripe, I purchased a VGA to ColorStripe/S-Video adapter. I tried the S-Video connection only, then tried the ColorStripe separately. Neither produced any image or sound on the TV. I then tried resetting the Mac Mini's resolution to 640 x 480 and retried the earlier procedure. Still no joy. Any suggestions anyone?

If you have an original Mac Mini with a DVI port, then you need an Apple DVI to Video Adapter.

  • Install on MacMini (config'ed for server)

    Greetings,
I am looking for a way out of the MacMini with SL Server that I bought 6 months ago and has been nothing but a drain of my time and still doesn't work.
Someone has suggested just installing Snow Leopard on the machine. Will that work?
SOme other points: I've also heard there is a way to install SL while connected to my old Powerbook in order to suck the entire old drive onto the new machine in an operable manner. Is this accurate, and can this be done if my old machine is the Powerbook on the old apple chip when the new machine is intel based?
Additionally, what are the differences between the single pack and the family pack?
    Thanks,

Someone has suggested just installing Snow Leopard on the machine. Will that work?
If you can find a copy of the workstation version of Snow Leopard shipped with the same model of Mac mini, yes. Apple has not, to my knowledge, shipped a retail version of Snow Leopard new enough to boot your mini.
I've also heard there is a way to install SL while connected to my old Powerbook in order to suck the entire old drive onto the new machine in an operable manner. Is this accurate, and can this be done if my old machine is the Powerbook on the old apple chip when the new machine is intel based
No, it's not accurate. The OS on your PowerBook will not boot your mini.
what are the differences between the single pack and the family pack?
If you mean single and family pack of Mac OS X, the single pack is licensed for installation on one computer only, while the family pack is licensed for installation on up to five Macs.

  • Macmini can't wake up and I Get a Black Screen

Hi all, this is my first post in this community. Please do help me.
I purchased a Mac mini (2012 late model, OS was originally Mavericks 10.9.1 when the machine arrives at my home. ) in January 2014. I used a “miniDP to DP adapter” to connect the Macmini with my Asus PB278Q Display (the original DP cable that comes with PB278Q is connected to the adapter. The adapter is plugged into the Thunderbolt socket on the back of Macmini). It supports the maximum resolution on my display (2560x1440), but if I use a HDMI cable instead, it only supports up to 1920x1080P. Everything was fine until last week when I attempted to wake up macmini after it had slept for 8 hours or so (I used it in the morning, put it to sleep mode before going to work, and then came back at 5:40 pm hoping to use it again). The Macmini light was on, and I could hear noise. But the screen is black with its power light yellow. When I kept hitting the keyboard, I could hear a “Ding” from Macmini each time, and the PB278Q power light sometimes turned blue, but soon a prompt "No Signal” appeared on the screen, followed by a totally black screen with power led turning back to yellow.
I tried to unplug the adapter from the thunderbolt port, plugging it back in, connecting a HDMI cable with macmini (PB278Q supports both DP and HDMI), nothing helped. Pressing and holding the power button for 6 secs, and pressing it again to let Macmini reboot surely helps each time. I have not done a thorough experiment to tell within how many hours the wakeup has no issues. But I am sure that there is no issues at least within one hour. I.e. if I walk away from my macmini, and it sleeps (set to 10 mins sleep), come backs after not a long while, and hit the keyboard or the trackpad. The screen comes back to life immediately, and I see the “login” dialog.
I called Mac techsupport for three times and talked with their higher level engineers for a long time. They suggested me to do “Command+Option+R+P”. Now I know that is “Resetting NVRAM / PRAM”. But the problem stays.
Does Re-installing help? I just reinstalled last night and won’t be able to judge until tomorrow. At this point, I have the following suspicions, which I hope someone can help:
    1. The miniDP to DP adapter might have caused this problem. Replacing one adapter or using a good miniDP-DP cable might be the solution. But I can’t find such a cable or adapter on Apple’s online store. Note it should be Mini-DP to DP or thunderbolt to DP cable. Please suggest where I can get one
    2. I doubt that my suspicion 1 is valid, as in my question – why is everything ok when the macmini does not sleep or sleeps a short time? When I work on the macmini, no problem happens. The display works fine, and the resolution is the maximum that the display is capable of. Therefore, why should my suspicion one hold any water?
    3. Since the display power led turns blue when macmini detects keyboard hits, does that prove that macmini is innocent, as it successfully sends out a signal to my display, but somehow my display persistently says “no signal”. In this light, can we shrink the problem identification scope to the display, the DP cable and the adapter?
Thank you very much for any help or hint/tips I can get from any of you.
    God bless.

    Hello Bluebird,
See if it's related to this...
It also seems to be related to later OSX versions, like 10.8.x & 10.9.x
The 2012 macs (and later apparently) (also later OSX versions on earlier Macs can do it also), not waking normally from sleep after hours being in sleep. (noted here ...

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • How can I use an external USB drive on my Macmini with Boot Camp and Lion/Windows 7?

I have a MacMini (Last model with a disk drive). The Mini has Lion and Windows 7 installed using Boot Camp. I want to attach a 350GB, USB, HP Personal Storage Device (Hard Drive) to the computer and be able to use it in both Lion and Windows 7 mode. The USB drive is formatted for Windows 7. I only want to use it for storage and back-up purposes for both operating systems. It would be nice if I could access the total disk from either system without having to reboot to change operating systems to view Windows 7 files and reboot again to view Lion files. Can anyone offer any guidance or any informational websites to help me? Thank you for any help!!

Yes, you’ll be able to do that.
