Solution: Crashing 10.4 app when printing to a shared printer hosed on 10.5

Delete the printer drivers from 10.4.
For example if your sharing a Xerox Phaser 8860 from 10.5 and a 10.4 user tries to use it, it will usually crash the Application running. On the 10.4 computer delete the whole Xerox folder located in:
/library/printers/xerox

I don't intend to be rude, but your answer seems pretty generic. I could basically copy paste it to solve anything.
The first steps you mentioned I did with no success in solving the problem. Your other steps (update or re-install) might solve the problem, but it does nothing to identify it. Re-installing the system is not an option to be taken lightly and I consider it a last resource... I have a lot of time invested into having things working my way in the and a re-installation as you speak would mean spending more time configuring everything.
Re-installation is also a valid solution when there is one "weird" problem going on with one user. In this thread alone there are 5 people with the exact same problem, different printers and different applications behaving the same way so it does seem like a system error, but not a freak error. It seems as if theres a problem with wireless sharing of printers. I also found other threads with people having similar or identical problems... it seems to be more of a general thing.
I appreciate you trying to help, but unless you tell me you have replicated the situation and haven't found a problem, I'll keep waiting and looking for a better solution than to re-install os x.

  • Tiger machines can't print to Leopared shared printer

I have an HP Laserjet 1320 connected to my Mac Mini (Leopard) and this works as expected with that machine. I have tried sharing this, and other machines on my network (all running Tiger) can connect to port 631 on the Mini and print test pages. However, they can't actually print anything from any application. Instead, a dialog box saying simply "Error while printing" pops up.
All the Mini's cups logs look fine, but the other machines say such things as:
    I [13/Nov/2007:20:09:26 +0000] Added remote printer "HPLaserJet_1320series@utovogh"...
    E [13/Nov/2007:20:09:35 +0000] getprinterattrs: resource name '/printers/ ' no good!
Configuring the printer as an IPP printer rather than relying on bonjour gives different effects. The job starts to print but then the printer is stopped. The printing machines' logs say:
    I [13/Nov/2007:21:01:22 +0000] [Job 3] Connected to utovogh.local...
    D [13/Nov/2007:21:01:22 +0000] [Job 3] Getting supported attributes...
    E [13/Nov/2007:21:01:22 +0000] PID 412 stopped with status 1!
E [13/Nov/2007:21:01:22 +0000] [Job 3] Destination printer does not exist!
    Has anyone any suggestions?

    Eventually I discovered the following.
When setting up the client machines to print to the shared printer, the machine hosting the printer identified itself with bonjour as $HOSTNAME.local. Upon looking at http://localhost:631 on the client machines I noticed that the printer was identified as $PRINTER_NAME@$HOSTNAME, the ".local" part having disappeared. So, the solution was to add an entry to /etc/hosts on the clients.
Next, to find out why printing is so slow from the clients...

  • Printing to a shared printer on Windows 7 from 10.6

I have two MacBooks running Snow Leopard and I'd like to print to a shared printer on a Windows 7 desktop PC. I've tried putting all three computers on the same WORKGROUP but I still don't see the Win7 box. Help!

Windows 7 introduced a new sharing feature called HomeGroup that is supposed to replace the workgroup for home networking. However, the feature only works for Windows 7 connected to other Windows 7. Therefore, if the Windows 7 computer has been configured to use HomeGroup, the first thing you need to do is detach Windows 7 from the HomeGroup.
The next setting is the network profile for Windows 7 computer. Windows 7 provides four network profiles; Home, Work, Public and Domain. Based on the network location you choose, Windows assigns a network discovery state to the network and opens the appropriate Windows firewall ports for that state. Ideally the computer should be set to the Home or Work profile. You don't want the Public profile - it is designed for places like Internet cafe's so the sharing is very restricted.
With the network profile selected, another setting within the profile that can hinder the discovery of the shared printer is the network discovery setting. With this setting turned off, the Windows 7 computer will not appear under the respective workgroup (or if the setting has been changed after the computer was seen by the Mac, then it can appear in the workgroup computer list but will not show any shared printer - this is most likely due to the LAN manager timing). This setting can be accessed via Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Advanced sharing settings.
Also, within the Advanced sharing settings for the Work or Home profile, another setting called Password protected sharing can stop the shared printer from appearing. With this setting turned on, the Win7 computer will still be seen when adding the Windows shared printer, but after selecting the Win7 computer, the shared printer is not displayed as no prompt is given to enter user account details. So this setting needs to be turned off. Then when the Win7 computer name is selected, a prompt will appear requesting user account information. The Guest account can be selected here to see the shared printer name.
    *Adding the Printer*
Now that you can see the printer share, the next step is to add a printer driver that will support the printing via a Windows computer. The Canon drivers do not support this type of connection, even the so-called CUPS drivers. For this type of connection, the user must have the Gutenprint driver set installed, which may not be installed by default depending on the type of install they performed with Snow Leopard.
It is important to note that not every model of Canon inkjet and AIO is supported by the Gutenprint driver set. This is especially the case with the later models. In this situation, a user will either have to wait or check out the other CUPS application, PrintFab. Because there is a cost involved with PrintFab, users will typically avoid this application however the software does keep up-to-date with newer model releases compared to Gutenprint.

  • Parental control problem printing to a shared printer

    Hello chaps,
    Here's an annoying one.
Two Macs, both running OS X 10.6.3. They are both on a wireless LAN, once has a Canon Pixma 4200 printer directly connected via USB with Printer Sharing turned on - Everyone allowed to print.
The problem: When my wife prints to the shared printer from her machine it works fine. When my kids try to print from their Parental Control-controlled account it doesn't.
The job comes up in the print queue but with On hold (authentication required) next to it.
The account has the box ticked to allow administration of Printers.
I can find no place to Authenticate, to get the job to print, even via the CUPS Web interface (that I'm not an expert in).
    All clues gratefully received.
    Anyone have anu clues

  • Inconsistent Printing to a Shared Printer

I'm having a problem printing to a shared printer. My computer is a MacBook Air on Lion. The computer where the printer is shared from is a Mac Pro on Snow Leopard. It's a Brother Laser Printer HL-1440.
I'm connected to the same ethernet as Mac Pro. The printer is connected via USB.
I have been able to print before but going forward the ability to print is inconsistent. Sometimes I can see the printer when trying to add it in Print & Scan and sometimes I can't. I deleted the printer trying to troubleshoot. When it does show up, I sometimes get the error "The printer is not connected".
Any and all suggestions would be most helpful. Thank you!

  • Cannot print to a shared printer on Windows

    Hello,
I am a new user to Mac OS. Since ive bought it, about 2-3 months id say, im unable to print to a shared printer (via LAN) from my MBP. I have tried a lot of things and even tried Apple Support in my city (which isnt any good) and Printer Company support (Canon), they both are blaming on each other. Leaving my problem unsolved.
    Here is the set up:
    Win XP PC
    Mac  OS X 10.6 MBP
    2 Printers;
    1. Canon LBP 2900
    2. Canon MF4350d
both shared over LAN to other PCs.
Basically, Id like to ask a few question I think might help me.
    1. What kind of driver should i use while printing ? Im using the Generic one. I tried printing with 4350d driver, didnt help either. No driver available for LBP2900.
    2. Do i need to make any settings on my Win XP or Mac OS X ?
any help would be appreciated. as this is really getting under my skin.
    Thanks.
    -Raghav

I didnt mean to upset anyone. Its really cute to see every MAC person getting so upset even with the slightest negative comment for Apple. .
See as far as I am concerend I perceive this problem as a MAC related problem. Because my other Windows PCs arent having the same issue. I know MAC has some advantages over Win, Im not debating that.
Try to look at it from my perspective. I have used windows for about 12-15 years untill I got my MBP a few months back. The reason why I chose MBP was because I was impressed with what Apple did with iPhone 4 so I thought I should try an OS which is so hyped to be better than Windows. Truth is I am having a lot of problems with it.
    1. Compatiblity is a major issue. Maybe not in North America. But I am from a small place in India. Printers, websites, etc.
    2. Support/Service is pathetic. No ones knows whats going on. They are blaming each other (Apple & Canon)
    3. It really over heats ! upto 80 Degrees C ! I always heard MBs are super cool and all that. Truth is I cant use it on my bare lap. Whereas I got a HP Notebook at least 5 years old that hears up less than my MBP.
    4. Resoltion is so high I cant read text properly. OS X isnt a resolution independent OS, unlike Win.
These are just few. I am not saying Im competely unsatisfied with the product. I do like its style. Its battery performance. Keyboard. Trackpad.
But If an average consumer gets irritated in day to day tasks, then that OS isnt for the majority out there. Thats all I am saying. I have to look up for so many tweaks into Mac OS to make up for some basic things that Win has over Mac.
Anyways, dont get offended. nothing against you. ITs just im not a fan of Apple. If  could Id return my MBP, but I cant so. Here I am

  • How to print on Windows Shared Printer

As I search in Google I found that there are many question about hot to print on windows shared printers. This is the way....
Before you add your windows shared printers in you Mac, sometimes you can not find your printer driver. The only way is directly connect your windows shared printers to you Mac, and connect your Mac to internet. After that your mac will automatically download printer driver. Now you have to add windows shared printers to your mac (this is part is easy..I'm not going to explain this...), and after you select the right driver you still can NOT print to windows shared printers ? You already have user & password for PC that connected to the windows shared printers...but nothing happened in your printer...
    Soooo.....
All you have to do is :
    1. Go to system pref on mac
    2. Click on sharing - thick on "file sharing"
    3. Go to "option" and then thick on "share files & folders using AFP" & thick on "share files & folders using SMB (windows)"
    4. Dont forget to thick on you account name below...
    5. You're good to go...
    6. Please note that you have to know the PC Windows user & password that connected to the shared printer.

    Hello Greg & Hello PAHU...
Yesterday everything is fine for printing to windows shared printer. But after I update my XP, problems came up again....
And thanks to your link Greg, you are absolutly right about the driver...the problem is the driver...
And your link is solving  my problem (until know....) and you are right too PAHU, without thicking File Sharing feature in my Mac, I still can printing with windows shared printer...
And with this reply I admitted that my information above maybe wrong, and the real solver to my problem is to install gutten-print driver :http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php
Thanks guys you're the best...now I live happily with my MBA

    Hello Jfadair9,
Thanks for the post.  I'm not sure which model printer that you have but you should be able to print from your iPad 2 with the HP Home and Biz application.  This is for wireless printers that are NOT web enabled.  I've included a link below with some great information on how to get this resolved.  Good Luck!

  • Mac Book doesn't print when connected to a shared printer.

I am hosting a shared printer in our office and no other computer but mine can print from it. Mine is the only one connected to it via USB. All of the computers are Mac laptops. I've enabled printer sharing and checked to see how the others were configured but can't figure out what's wrong.
When printing from the other computers, I get a message in the progress bar saying "(On Hold) Authentication Required." I've tried pressing Resume and re-entering the username/password, but it goes back to that message...
The printer is a Brother 2140.

  • Printing to a Shared Printer on Windows

    Hello,
I just purchased my very first iMac. Been a WIndows guy since there was a Windows so it's a pretty steep learning curve. I have a Windows Server at home that has a shared printer. I can successfully setup the Printer in System Preferences - Print and Fax. The problem I'm having is that whenever I try to print something, I see the following error in status screen:
    "Error: /Library/Printers/EPSON/InkjetPrinter2/Filter/rastertoescpll.app/Contents/MacOS /rastertoescpll failed"
I also tried printing a test page thru the printer setup. The iMac prompts me for my password, I see the job disappear from the print queue but nothing comes out of the printer and I receive no errors. If I jump to my Windows Home Server and print a test page, it comes out correctly so from a connectivity standpoint, everything appears functional.
    Help!!!!

    Hi Victor,
This is a Windows Home Server that I built myself. I can get to my shares just fine from my Mac. My iTunes library is on a shared drive on my home server and I noticed that when I restart my Mac, it cannot find the library. I have to click on Select Library, navigate to my share drive on my Windows Home Server and that's it. I've already saved my password to the keychain so I never get prompted to enter a password.
When I go to Printer Fax from the Settings option, I can see my printer and it's status. I can click on the Print Queue and see that the printer is Ready.
If I click on Printer Setup and then select to Print a Test Page, I see that the Status reads "On Hold (Authentication Required). I enter my password and I can see that the Job Queue is looking like it's printing the job however nothing comes out of the printer.
When I print from TextEdit or from Safari is when I get the error I've referenced.
This is so frustrating 'cause it's all new but I know that it will only get better the more I use my new Mac.

  • Printing on a shared printer on a network Windows PC

I've successfully located and added a Brother HL-1030 laser printer attached to Windows PC on my Linksys network. When I added it, Generic printer driver was selected. Brother doesn't have a Mac driver for my model on its site.
The problem is that whenever I print a document, no matter how many pages, the printer spits out 5 or so blank pages. Does anyone else have this problem or knows of a solution? Is it the driver?
    Thanks.

It sounds like the printing system is having a problem loading one of the files it uses during normal operation.  You can open the Console application (/Applications/Utilities).  On the left side of the window, you should see a list of logs.  If not, click the show logs icon at the top left of the window.  Navigate (you may need to click several disclosure triangles) down to /var/log/cups/error_log.  Are there any messages of note in the error_log?  It should be leaving a lot of messages about what sort of trouble it is having.  The most common errors in cases like yours are that it cannot read the configuration file of the printers.conf file.

  • New Windows laptop fails to print to Mac-shared printer

I prevoiusly had a shared HP DeskJet 5900 shared from my PowerBook G4 to a Toshiba Windows laptop via Bonjour. The printer was set up as a generic Postscript printer and printing worked fine.
I replaced the PowerBook with a MBP C2D and the Windows laptop with a Sony Vaio, and this same printing arrangement no longer works. Setting up the printer in Windows goes fine. The Bonjour printer setup assistant finds the shared printer just fine, and set-up appears to succeed, but printing from any Windows app fails with the error message, “Printing failed because an error occurred.”
    What am I doing wrong?

…On the VAIO, are you still creating the
printer as a Generic PS? I've seen problems when you
add the Windows driver for the printer instead of
setting it to PS (the Mac does the conversion so it
is recommended to leave it set this way).
Yes, it’s Standard/Generic Postscript, although I also tried setting it up with the appropriate printer-specific Windows driver with the same result.
It might be worth checking Console in the MBP to see
if there is a better explanation as to what is going
wrong. The cups error log may be helpful (providing
the spool file is getting to the MBP).
Good idea. Unfortunately nothing shows up on Console. I suspect the connection is failing entirely on the Windows end.
However, the connection does work on the file-sharing level. In a Windows Explorer window, I can successfully browse \\[Mac name]\ and see the printers as well as shared files

has also provided a solution to the printing difficulties encountered under Leopard, especially to shared printers connected to another machine (Windows) on a network.
Here is his advice/step by step - worked for me, finally!
    +"Hey guys,+
+I have the solution for you.+
+Prerequisites: 1. your windows PC with the printer on it needs to have an admin account on it with a single word no spaces. (preferred unix) 2. your printer sharename is a single word (ie. Canon iP4300 should be just ip4300).+
    +Now follow the below steps:+
+1. Open your system preferences > Open Print & Fax+
    +2. Click + to add a printer.+
+3. Right-click on the Toolbar at the top and select "Customise Toolbar..."+
+4. Drag the "Advanced" icon to the toolbar & select "Done"+
    +5. Click the "Advanced" icon+
+6. Select "Windows" from the "Type:" drop down menu+
+7. In the "URL:" textbox type the location of your windows printer in the format below (use the format depending on whether your Windows PC sharing the Printer has a password or not):+
    +smb://username:password@ipaddress/printersharename <- Print Server does have a password+
    +smb://username@ipaddress/printersharename <- Print Server does NOT have a password+
    +(eg. smb://[email protected]/ip4300)+
+8. Enter a Name and Location. (Human Friendly Names with Spaces are allowed)+
+9. Now select the appropriate driver and then click "Add"+
+10. Try printing somthing and then it will ask for a username and password of your windows server. Type and username and then the password and then add this to your keychain and click OK.+
+And there you go. Printing in OSX 10.5+

  • Can't print to a shared printer on 10.6.8 iMac from Windows 7 iMac

I am creating another discussion as I made some changes and hoping PAHU-san will be able to solve this problem.  I am using a Mac OSX 10.6.8 iMac and Windows7 iMac.  I installed the driver Canon LBP6750 UFRII on each machine and both can print.  However, printing from Windows 7 iMac to a shared printer on the Mac OSX 10.6.8 does not print anything and has no errors.

  • Printing to a Shared Printer in Classic programs

I searched for an answer to this and could not find anything so I am going to appeal for help. I have a Color LaserJet connected via USB to a G4 machine that is sharing the printer. The sharing works fine, all of my machines can access it. The problem occurs when users try to print from some of the older programs that we have that run in Classic mode. When we try and print from these programs, I cannot find the shared printer. I tried to access it via the chooser but had no luck. I will admit that I am not very familiar in navigating or using Classic or any version of OS9 so it is very possible that I am missing something very easy, but I would much apppriciate it if someone could point out what that is. Thanks!!
    Joe

You need to install printer drivers on the Classic side for the printer you are using. Your Classic installation also needs to have the necessary extensions for USB installed. The following may also help:
