Solution for 4 home computers

I have a Macbook pro using wireless and 3 desktop computer, how do I get another computer network to my time capsule? I have no more network port left for the fourth one. Thanks Alex

You just need to add an Ethernet switch to one of the LAN ports on your Time Capsule (TC), and then, connect any additional wired devices to the switch.

  • A simple network setup solution for a home user!

Hi, I currently have a Power book PC g4 it has x2 external drives connected to it via time capsule and I have an old G4 clunky desktop downstairs that is connected via Ethernet but some previous owner must've doctored it because it can't run safari or itunes. I want to upgrade to an Imac and use my old powerbook PC g4 basically as a screen and keyboard downstairs to access my main new computer which is upstairs. I'm sick of duplicate files because the two computers currently are run as completely separate but on the same network!! I also have an iphone and itunes which I want to be able to sync and use from either computer so in other words I want all the same programs etc on each computer two screens two keyboards but ideally only one hard drive which is backed up by time capsule. How do I do this easily? Remote Desktop? Currently I have terrible time syncing and numerous software issues because I am trying to run the same software on each computer and they don't like it. I ought to have two licenses to do that but it is too expensive for the home user! I know I'm a bit stupid regarding these matters but geekology doesn't come naturally I'm sorry.

Screen sharing lets you sort of do this, but don't expect it to be just like sitting in front of the remote computer. The connection will slow everything down and you won't get sound. Plus I'd be surprised if the PB had nearly as large a screen as any new iMac. This is not a realistic solution for day-to-day use.

Sounds to me like you need to replace the old hardware with a new laptop rather than an iMac. Then you can take it everywhere and not have any sync issues.

That's another reason to get a laptop... you could quit breaking the law and just install on one machine. Note, though, that if your software is as badly outdated as your hardware, it may not all work on the current version of the Mac OS (10.6.4, aka Snow Leopard). Check that before buying anything.

  • SE Electronics Reflexion Filter for Voice Home Recordings

    Hey,
My dealer, who works in a Studio as well is helping me out with my Home Recording Equipment List, as i posted it in another thread.
Since i will be doing the recordings at Home, i was thinking of making myself a Recording Cab for voice recordings. My dealer told me that would be too expensive and he recommended me:
    SE Electronics Reflesion Filter http://www.seelectronics.com/rf.html
To all the Sound Engineers out there who work in a Studio and live from that, please don't tell me that it is a peace of crap and that I should go to a studio (or "your" studio) cuz only there I will get a good sound.
I'm trying to find a solution for my Home Recording, so please try to be helpful and give constructive insight of your thoughts about this piece of equipment.
    Thanks
    Cheers, cj.

it is ridiculously cheap to build your own vox booth... about 20 Squaaremeter of chipbord 7$ per SQM - a couple of thin pillars 4$ each a pack of rockwool and a window if u wanna have reflections:-))) The problem with a vocal booth is that it is "relatively" small - if u have a normal male voice u will be able to energize the air at 100 hz... 100 herz is omni directional meaning that that is travels with the shape of a BALL in all directions....100 hz has a wavelength of 3,45 meter at 23 degrees celcius which should cover "normal" room temp... in order for this wave not to build up u would have to make one helllll of a large vox booth or make it air transparant - If I were u I would build 4 dividing Walls (should absorb and let air thru) then u will be able to "Shape" your room the best way.... DOnt fall for the trick and buy so called absorbers for 400$ at your dealer - THEY DONT WORK ....
That thing in the link is a total Joke - maybe it will absorb 1000HZ and above - but it will reflect 500HZ and below - how is a small thing like that gonna stop 100 herz???? 100 herz has a waveslength that is 3,45 meters long - the wave is going to laugh at that so called absorber:-))) I would not buy it.. putting something like that infront of the mic is worse than having nothing - it will reflect.... ALso - what happens to all reflections coming from the back or above - I think this company should call they thang a megaphone rather than an absorber
Then you would be better off by building 4 "Acoustic Walls" which you can moove around separately thus shaping you room like u want it -
Good Luck - if you are interested I could mail u some info on how to build such a dividing wall

What are best practices for managing my iphone from both work and home computers?

    Sync iPod/iPad/iPhone with two computers
Although it isn't possible to sync an Apple device with two different libraries it is possible to sync with the same logical library from multiple computers. Each library has an internal ID and when iTunes connects to your iPod/iPad/iPhone it compares the local ID with the one the device normally syncs with. If they are the same you can go ahead and sync...
I have my library cloned to a small 1Tb USB drive which I can take between home & work. At either location I use SyncToy 2.1 to update the local copy with the external drive. Mac users should be able to find similar tools. I can open either of the local libraries or the one on the external drive and update the media content of my iPhone. The slight exception is Photos which normally connects to a specific folder on a specific machine, although that can easily be remapped to the current library if you create a "Photos" folder inside the iTunes Media folder so that syncing the iTunes folders keeps this up to date as well. I periodically sweep my library for new files & orphans withiTunes Folder Watch just in case I make changes at one location but then overwrite the library with a newer copy from the other. Again Mac users should be able to find similar tools.
As long as your media is organised within an iTunes Music or Tunes Media folder, in turn held inside the main iTunes folder that has your library files (whether or not you let iTunes keep the media folder organised) each library can access items at the same relative path from the library folder so the library can be at different drives/paths on different machines. This solution ensures I always have adequate backups of my library and I can update my devices whenever I can connect to the same build of iTunes.
When working with an iPhone earlier builds of iTunes would remove any file not physically present in the local library, even if there was an entry for it, making manual management practically redundant on the iPhone. This behaviour has been changed but it will still only permit manual management with a library that has the correct internal ID. If you don't want to sync your library between machines on a regular basis just copy the iTunes Library.itl file from the current "home" machine to any other you want to use, then clean out the library entires and import the local content you have on that box.

    Regards
    Raghavendar

    Hi Raghavendar,
Generally, when you install Lync 2013 in the computer with Office 2010, a Lync Meeting Add-in will be installed and enabled in Outlook 2010. Please follow these steps to check it:
    1. In Outlook, click the File tab, click Options, and then click
    Add-Ins.
    2. Please take one of the following actions:
If the add-in is in the Inactive Application Add-ins list, follow these steps:
    a. In the Manage drop-down list at the bottom of the dialog box, click
COM Add-ins, and then click Go.
    b. Click to select the check box next to the add-in, and then click OK.
The New Online Meeting button should now be available in
Calendar View, and the Online Meeting button should be available when you create a new calendar item.
If the add-in is in the Disabled Application add-ins list, follow these steps:
    a. In the Manage drop-down list at the bottom of the dialog box, click
Disabled Items, and then click Go.
    b. Select the add-in, and then click Enable.
    c. Restart Outlook, and then verify that the add-in is displayed in the
    Add-ins dialog box.
The New Online Meeting button should now be available in
Calendar View, and the Online Meeting button should now be available when you create a new calendar item.
    3. In Event Viewer, view the Application log to see whether an error was logged for Outlook, for Lync 2013, the Lync Meeting Add-in for Microsoft Office 2013.

    hi marco
I found the problem. Do you have other wi-fi (w-lan) like repeater or tv-transmitter or d-link etc. if yes, please disconnect them once and try again after restarting the time-capsule resp. change the channel if you can to another one. then it should work again.
@ home i have a tv-transmitter via wi-fi and indeed, i changed the channel from 1 to 6 or something like that, then the iphone worked again.

  • Is there a solution for Higher Ed Computer Labs?

I am an instructional Technician for the Photography Department at a Community College. We currently purchase and use the Creative Suite 6 Design & Web Premium here in the Photography, Graphics and Journalism departments. We have over 150 Macintosh computers licensed with your product and we are very interested in the Creative Cloud.
Currently we purchase the licenses for all of our student and faculty computers, we are hoping that you will be developing an education solution for computer labs like ours.
What we would like to see is an arrangement that would allow our students to subscribe to the Creative Cloud for a three-month period that would be paid for prior to the first day of classes. This would avoid classroom disruptions from students failing to pay if the subscription was on a month-to-month basis.
While I understand that the current Student and Teacher edition at $19.95 is a limited promotion, a price of $20–$25 per month or $75 for a three-month period would be less than the cost of a textbook and could be easily charged as a class fee.
A potential problem is that students sometimes do not use the same computer all the time. If students are taking multiple classes in different labs, they need to be able to access the programs on several computers. I am currently subscribed to the free trial month and my impression is that the subscription is dependent on logging in with an Adobe ID. If this is the case, students should be able to use this log in to access the software they need on whatever computer they are at as long as they have an active (paid) login, and are not logged in on another computer.
As it is everywhere in education, our program budgets are tight. The Creative Cloud would allow us to save a significant amount of funds while still offering the most current technology to our students and faculty. The ability to access any software we need and allowing students the ability to access the programs at school and at home will empower both our faculty and students. Additionally, the availability of cloud storage will allow students to work on files at home and at school seamlessly.
    I am making several assumptions:
    Pricing –
Student and faculty pricing will be available.
A price will be established for a three-month period to facilitate a college semester.
    Access –
Students will be able to access the programs on more than one lab computer.
Is access controlled by logging in with an Adobe ID?
Once the software has been installed on a computer, will any student with an Adobe ID be able to access it?
We are hoping to be able to implement this by next fall, so I am anticipating that these details will be worked out before then.

Great to know this I will be sharing it with my professors also.  To have the "team" version would be great!  Many problems occur for students with portable storage units.  The worst is forgetting to download a project and take it with you. which really hurts our timing on a project to completion.  Also as the projects grow in size we can end up with storage issues as some files are very large.  This sounds like a grand solution.
Thank you for answering my question earlier Mr. Rice.  Now I need to get back to my assignments. bye.

  • Finding new solution for Exchange Server

We are a three-man operation and since 2007 have had an HP Proliant ML110 running Microsoft Windows Server 2003 for SBS SP2. I think it's time to replace the server but the prices of the hardware seem to have increased dramatically and I've had a quote for
a new HP with Server 2010 and transferring everything across of over £4,000 which is ridiculous. I feel we've under-utilised many aspects of the programme for years. Really we just use it as a storage; to run Exchange for our (Outlook 2010) email; 'host' some
shared software (notably a diary service) which enables us to all connect and edit; each laptop (3) is assigned a user name, etc which enables it to connect to the network.
I've been trying to get my head round the Cloud, Exchange Online, Office 365 and I feel that there's a solution to be had within this area. But I'd love someone to confirm that and even begin the process of pointing me in the right direction of what I need
to buy, pay per month, how easy to set-up, etc.
    Many thanks, Lawrence Kershaw

    Hi there,
I would recommend to upgrade your server to Windows server 2012 Essentials, and use Office 365 for your email needs.  The way you have this currently setup, you are at a point where everything can be moved over in a few days, and have you up and running.
Office 365 is between $4 and $20 a month, not sure how this relates to pounds.  Also,  if you choose the Small Business version, you get the newest Office software to use on up to 5 computers per user, meaning you can install Office on your home
computers, as can the other two in your office.
Windows Server 2012 Essentials has a migration setting, where you can easily migrate all your current settings on your SBS 2003 to the 2012 server, making the transition seamless.  There are some great websites with instructions out there for this as
well.  Also,  2012 Essentials easily integrates with Office 365, so you only have one password to remember for your email and computer use.  This is handy for people, as no one likes to have to remember multiple passwords to get the job done.
If you have more questions, or I did not fully answer yours, please reply.  Hope this does help and sheds some light on what you are looking at.

  • Network Card Teaming for the Home

Sadly microsoft is way behind the other competing OS's  in this field.
Sure you may say that your server versions offer this but the home needs its too. Why you might ask. The answer is Bluray and eventually 4k movies. I copy them to my freebsd plex server for home viewing. I'd prefer not
to let teenagers ruin my bluray disks. I copy them once and then store them safely away.
My freebsd plex  server has 3 1 Gig links to my home cisco 24 port Gig switch which connects by 3 Gig links to my 8 port cisco switch and the 3 nics in my FX8350 box. This works fine in linux and freebsd , but unless
I have  identical cards and can run the manufacturers teaming software I am basically screwed in windows and back to single links.
You may say that I'm disk bound anyway, but I have a a 4 X 3 Terabyte disk ZFS system in their version of RAID 0 which is rysnced to four identical pools both local and remote over a 5ghz wifi link.
Don't restrict us and blame issues with response times as I've read. Just let us use it as an option  and we'll make our own judgement. After over 30 years of computer experience I can cope. Remember us baby boomers
like your founder.  I am currently downloading the enterprise version to see if it has the capability.
I have read many comments about this and I totally agree with them.
This is not only your chance not only to catch up with what currently appears to be your technical superiors but also provide a compelling reason to upgrade from Windows 7 for technically expert users.
Oh btw I do really like windows 10, no issues so far, but please fix this. Pretty please :D
    Cheers

Oh by the way your clarification was more like obfuscation. Its not about streaming media , its about Teaming Network Cards to create multiple gig LACP channels. I've changed the title to reflect that.
I don't think that Microsoft is too concerned about losing consumer sales
due to any lack of native teaming in its consumer level OS'. If one
absolutely requires NIC teaming on a consumer OS then the solution for
Windows is to purchase multiple NICs from the same vendor that support
teaming and use their configuration utility to create and manage the team.
Teaming, at the consumer level, is an extreme outlier and as I said, I'm
sure that Microsoft isn't losing any sleep over any lost sales to due its
lack of native teaming in the client OS.

  • One iTunes library between multiple home computers

I have looked for a complete answer to this question, but haven't been able to find a complete answer.
I'd like to have a single iTunes library to be shared by 3 home computers.
First let me note that the library I have is composed of about 12,000 songs, all of which were taken from CDs that I have purchased.
I have 2 Mac Powerbooks (connected via ethernet) and a Mac mini (wireless connection), all running Mac OSX 10.4. Additionally I have a LaCie 2d Network 2 drive connected to my home network via ethernet.
On one of the laptops I have my entire music collection, complete with album artwork (much of which I have scanned in myself). On the other laptop I have a partial collection, no artwork.
I'd like to have all the computers access a single music library. I'd also like that library located on the LaCie Network drive. I would also like each computer to be able to add music to the library and to create their own playlists if possible.
I seem to remember that there might be a application that would allow this. I am OK with purchasing a product that could manage this, but I don't remember the product name or who created it.
I am also more than willing to set up each computer individually if I have to but I can't seem to fins specific instructions as to how to go about doing this.
Does anyone know of any tutorials or purchased applications that can help me with this?
    Thank you,
    TPK

Thank you Gerald. That is very helpful.
I have enabled the sharing, and it seems to work fine, but on the connecting mac I am unable to pull up the artwork or sync an iPod. I'll look at my settings and see if I missed something.
My goal is to have a single library where family members can sync their iPods from their own machines.
    Thankx,
    TPK

  • What's the best storage solution for a large iLife? RAID? NAS?

I'm looking for an affordable RAID storage solution for my Time Machine, iTunes Library, iMovie videos, and iPhoto Library. To this point I've been doing a hodgepodge of external hard drives without the saftey of redundancy and I've finaly been bitten with HD failures. So I'm trying to determine what would be the best recommendation for my scenario. Small Home Office for my wife's business (just her), and me with all our media. I currentlty have a mid-2010 Mac Mini (no Thunderbolt), she has an aging 2007 iMac and 2006 MacBook Pro (funny that they're all about the same benchmark speed). We have an AppleTV (original), iPad2 and two iPhone 4S's.
1st Question: Is it better to get a RAID and connect it to my Airport Extreme Base Station USB port as a shared disk? OR to connect it directly to my Mac Mini and share through Home Sharing? OR Should I go with a NAS RAID?
2nd Question: Simple is Better. Should I go with a Mac Mini Server and connect drives to it? (convert my Mac Mini into a server) or Should I just get one of those nice all-in-one 4-bay RAID drive solutions that I can expand with?
    Requirements:
    1. Expandable and Upgradeable. I don't want something limited to 2TB drives, but as drives get bigger and cheaper I want to easily throw one in w/o concerns.
    2. Simple integration with Time Machine and my iLife: iTunes, iMovie, iPhoto. If iTune's Home Sharing feature is currently the best way of using my media across multiple devices then why mess with it? I see "DLNA certified" storage on some devices and wonder if that would just add another layer of complexity I don't need. One more piece to make compatible.
    3. Inexpensive. I totally believe in the "You Get What You Pay For" concept. But I also realize sometimes I'm buying marketing, not product. I imagine that to start, I'm going to want a diskless system (because of $$$) to throw all my drives into, and then upgrade bigger drives as my data and funds grow.
    4. Security. I don't know if its practical, but I like the idea of being able to pop two drives out and put them in my safe and then pop them back in once a week for the backup/mirroring. I like this idea because I'm concerned that onsite backup is not always the safest. Unfortunately those cloud based services aren't designed for Terabytes of raw family video, or an entire media library that isn't wholey from the iTunes Store. I can't be the only one facing this challenge. Surely there's an affordable way to keep a safe backup for the average Joe. But what is it?
    5. Not WD. I've had bad experiences with Western Digital drives, and I loathe their consumer packaged backup software that comes preloaded on their external drives. They are what I meant when I say you get what you pay for. Prettily packed garbage.
    6. Relatively Fast. I have put all my media on an external drive before (back when it fit on one drive) and there's noticeable spool-up hang time. Thunderbolt's nice and all, but so new that its not easily available across devices, nor is it cheap. eSata is not really an option. I love Firewire but I'm getting the feeling that Apple has made it the red-headed step-child of connections. USB 3.0 looks decent, but like eSata, Apple doesn't recognize it exists. Where does that leave us? Considering this dilemma I really liked Seagate's GoFlex external drives because it meant I could always buy a new base and still be compatible. But that only works with single drives. And as impressive as Seagate is, we can't expect them to consistently double drive sizes every two years like they have been -cool as that may be.
So help me out without getting too technical. What's the best setup? Is it Drobo? Thecus? ReadyNAS? Seagate's BlackArmor? Or something else entirely?
All comments are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I am currently using WD 2TB Thunderbolt hard drive for my iTunes, which i love and is works great.  i am connected directly to my Mac Book Pro. I am running low on Memory and thinking of buying a bigger Hard drive.  My question is should I buy 6TB thunderbolt HD or 6TB NAS drive to work solely for iTunes.  I have home sharing enabled for my Apple TV
I also have my time capsule connected just as back up only.
