Solution for fingerprint scanner failure after ThinkVantage upgrade!

Hi Everyone,
I keep seeing a number of posts about problems with the fingerprint scanner after you let the ThinkVantage updater run and update the fingerprint software.  I found a solution last week and it has been working flawlessly since then.  I posted it here:
http://forums.lenovo.com/lnv/board/message?board.id=T_Series_Thinkpads&thread.id=19388
However here is are the details:
I ran into the same problem, however I found a solution that has worked for me. I went into the control panel and open programs and features. What I noticed was that there were two different versions of the fingerprint software installed. I uninstalled both of them, rebooting when required until they were gone. I then downloaded the latest version of the fingerprint software from here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-70598
After installing it, my scanner is working like a charm! Hopefully this helps you out as well!
Cheers!
Chris

Looks like some magic (i.e., simple full system restart) helped. After that ACPI looks normal. Some errors still are in dmesg, but seemingly not critical.

  • SL300 Thinkvantage Toolbox failure after Win7 upgrade

Despite getting the latest version of this utility - 6.0.5449.31 (using Lenovos Update program installed on PC), the program reports that it has stopped running (after "checking status") and closes down.

When system up, battery monitor (and files in /proc/acpi) says that no battery is present (see italic messages, theoretically battery is present), but DPMS and suspend work.
Is there any solution apart from downgrading? It's a big problem for me, cause I'm often using my laptop on batteries.

  • Powerbook G4 17" motherborard failure after RAM upgrade???

Thank you in advance for any advice.
I have an original, first generation PB G4 17" that I've used for 5 years. Recently, I had to replace the AC supply because the former one was bent when the laptop fell out of a chair. When I took it in to an authorized dealer here in Taiwan, to test the power adapter, I decided to upgrade the RAM from 1GB to 2 GB. Before I brought it home, it seemed to work at the store, although I thought I did not appreciate any performance boost when I opened multiple apps. Anyway, after I got home, I tried to turn it on, but it would not turn on. Thinking the battery was depleted, I hooked it up to the new AC adapter (Apple brand), and lo and behold it would not boot. I would shut it down by pressing the on/off button or just disconnect the power source (adapter and battery). It started to beep three times after multiple attempts. I took it back to the store, and got my original RAM reinstalled, and the same three beeps occured. I just got a call from the service center and was told that the motherboard has failed. Does any of this make sense? I have never had any trouble like this prior to the RAM upgrade. I just replaced the HD about 6 months ago. I'm just sick to my stomach...Any suggestions? Any input would be much appreciated.

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
We could discuss how you'd benefit from the additional memory, however, since the system isn't working, let's focus on the beeps.
When you start the system, it goes through some tests (called the power on self test or POST) before loading the operating system. If it finds any errors, it beeps, and the beeps are:
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable
3 beeps means it doesn't find any memory that passes the POST test. The fact that this started up after the service center installed the memory upgrade is suspicious, however, if it worked in the store then stopped working later, it may just be unfortunate timing.
There are some company's on the internet that claim they can repair the logic boards, otherwise, Apple's solution is to replace them. In the US, some Apple stores offer a 'fix everything' service for $350, which is less than specifically replacing the logic board - perhaps there is a similar service in Taiwan.

  • Cisco 3750 ping failures after stack upgrade

I just updated my 4 stack of 3750X switches from 12.x IOS to 15.0.2 IOS. Only 2 of them updated correctly the first time, I had to manually update to the other 2. After getting all of them upgrade I restarted the entire stack.
After that I cannot get PCs not on my default VLAN to talk to their DHCP servers or ping anywhere in the network. I get a "PING: transmit failed. General failure". I can however, ping into my default vlan from the switch and ping out to other locations from the switch.
    I've tried the following:
Checking firewall status on several (WIN 7) pc's, it's off
Changing ports on switch (no change)
    Restarting the PC (no change)
    Release/renew ipconfig (no change)
    flushdns (no change)
    clear ARP table on switch
set un-set spanning-tree portfast (no change)
check interface status (up and up)
check vlan interface status (up and up)
    changed vlans (no change)
checked VLAN help addresses (still there)
Any help at this point is appreciated as my network is entirely down right now.

I can set my laptop statically to a VLAN address, and I can ping out, get to the internet, ping between VLANs, etc. But if I just set a port (or leave it in the default VLAN) it will give me the “PING: transmit failed. General failure.” DHCP requests still aren’t getting fulfilled and even pings won’t go through if there’s not a statically set address. Nothing changed on my server configs and I even restarted my DHCP servers after encountered this problem. My guess is this is a new feature that’s turned on by default in the new IOS that needs to be disabled. Any help is appreciated.

  • App failure after OS upgrade- support options? PSE-6 Prem-4

I use Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0 and it's companion video app, Adobe Premiere 4.0, and I run MS Vista HP.
I recently updated my operating system to Service Pack 2 (SP2). When the upgrade was installed, as usual there were many glitches that needed tweaking, but the worst was my Adobe apps. Both of the above named apps, came back with the same error "cannot start, reinstall program".
After the initial error message, future attempts to start either app were not answered. Nothing happened. Reviewing the status in Task Manager showed that the apps were both running, but neither was actually visible or operating, just eating memory while standing idle.
After reviewing the forums and knowledge bases and finding nothing on this problem, I contacted Adobe Support via Chat (the only method available) and after a long drawn out process of locating my registrations for these apps, I was told that I had  to back to  the original retailer where I bought them, several years before. The only other option was of course to BUY the latest versions from Adobe. Even if I had any recollection of where i bought it, I can only imagine how that conversation would go! The original disks were 'somewhere' but I just moved and lord only knows where they were put until all is unpacked! One would think if one had the serial numbers, that downloads or better yet, repair files, would be available to registered users, but NO!
My original software worked fine, so no reason to spend more money in this economy, I just needed to get them working to finish a project with a deadline rapidly approaching. As I was working with PSD files, no other application would help me finish my project, so I had to get something. Perusing the Adobe website I found the trial versions of Adobe PSE 8.0 and Premiere 6.0! Great, I thought, this should work to finish my project and hopefully I would find my original software before the expiration date of the trial software!
With ever faithful 'Murphy' standing by for the install, I got the message "Trial period expired. Please enter serial number". This happened with both apps, and the only thing I could figure s that I probably downloaded these before and there was some embedded snitch file that would not allow me to run it again. But... Murphy must have gone out for coffee, because in a moment of inspiration, I went back to my original apps and clicked on the icons... You guessed it, both apps were restored to full operation!
So this is why I am writing this to the forum. I found a fix that Adobe either does not know, or won't tell. Whatever files went missing or corrupted during my upgrade were re-installed into the Adobe 'common' folder, restoring my original apps. If these files could be identified by Adobe techs, they could be made available for download to repair these issues without the run-around, and without making customers spend more money, the mark of a reputable software manufacturer.
The only thing I do  not know for sure, and until I find my original disks I do not intent to investigate, is whether or not the original apps will continue to function if I uninstall the trial versions to get my disk space back,s they do not work and only take up space. I will investigate the Adobe folders and see if I can identify which files were installed with the trials, and if they may be affected by an uninstall. Sometimes the uninstaller apps are intuitive enough to know that certain files are in use by another application, and will not be included in the uninstall. But I am not going to test this theory until find my original disks!
Please pass this info on to your friends who use MS Vista and PSE 6.0 & Prem 4.0

    It's Ok.
    Now I have:
    $ cat /etc/issue
    Oracle Linux Server release 6.4
    No any problem.

  • IPad 2 freezes for 1min to 3mins after ios8 upgrade

My faithful iPad 2 never had a problem until I upgraded to ios8.
IT now hangs, or freezes, and will not respond to touch or to buttons. I will pick up the iPad, click face book start to scroll and it frezes. Nothing I do will get it to work. I'll move my finger over the screen to scroll up or down and nothing happens. I'll try and press the home button and noting. I'll hold down the home button and nothing.
then after a minute or so it starts to work, I'll scroll up a bit and it will hang again. I again can't scroll or pressing the button does nothing. Then again after a minute or two it starts to work, and will act normally as if nothing happened. If I leave it for an hour or two without using it, then pick it up, it will do this again.
it never happened with iOS 7. I've updated to every variant of ios8 in hope the next release will fix it but it happens on every version .
ive clocked reset and wipe all , then reloaded as new ipad but this didn't work. It's as if ios8 has been deliberately released to stop older machines from operating. Ideally I'd like to go back to ios7 but that's not possible

    Hi twigthewonderkid2,
If you are having an issue with your iPad becoming unresponsive I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in this article -
iOS: Not responding or does not turn on - Apple Support
You have already done a number of the steps, and there is no need to repeat those.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Time Machine Restore failure after Lion upgrade

    Hi all,
I recently (accidentally) reformatted my Mac's hardrive and then installed Lion. I can only recover the files from TM after the Lion install. I can 'see' other backups for a split moment in the time field, but can onlny restore from the last 2 backups that I can clearly see after the Lion install. I REALLY need to get my apps back! Can anyone out there heeeeeelp!!!?

Are you using the "Star Wars" display?  If so, that's probably not what you want to do.
Your best bet is to do a full system restore, per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  That will put everything back just the way it was; your version of OSX, your apps, user accounts, preferences, data, etc.

  • IBus failure after recent upgrade

    Hi folks,
I recently moved to pure systemd as suggested, and I made other upgrades as well.
ibus is one of them, and unsurprisingly, it stopped working.
In the first place, nothing happened when I pressed the enable key combination (ctrl + space), which worked fine before.
I read ArchWiki and added some env variables to .bashrc, but nothing worked.
If I manually launch ibus-daemon, it says:
IBUS-Message: 11:23:28.878481: Engine xkb:us:altgr-intl:eng is already registered by other component
Then, I followed someone's advice and reverted to the previous version:
    sudo pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/ibus-1.4.2-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
My old configuration came back, when I checked ibus-setup.
But I still couldn't enable ibus.
Is this something related to things like GTK3 or so? I tried adding env variables like $GTK_IM_MODULE=ibus, in vain.
I don't mind reverting to old versions, as long as I can type in ibus again.
    Thank you in advance.

yungtrizzle wrote:Currently the ibus package does not ship with any input sources, those are packaged separately. Actually it seems the last update broke something unrelated to systemd.
Yes. For me it's seriously broken.
    I'm using KDE.

Next Generation Input Bus for Linux

Pinyin (Chinese) input method for the IBus framework
    community/ibus-qt 1.3.1-5
IBus qt library and IBus qt input method plugin
It completely forgotten ALL of my setting including input methods I've chosen and shortcut keys.
ibus-qt obviously is not work with ibus-1.4-99
All ibus related windows are ugly as hell
None of my input methods work.
Now I'm going to try rolling back various different versions of ibus and the input methods to find something that works.
    This is really a pain.
    EDIT:
I should say I think the settings issue is something to do with gconf as I get this message trying to remove and reinstall ibus-pinyin and ibus-chewing
(gconftool-2:2059): GConf-WARNING **: Client failed to connect to the D-BUS daemon:

  • A Fix for mail not pushing after iPhone upgrade.

Here is the fix. Keep in mind that I'm a Mac, if you're a PC you will need to read between the lines a bit. .But this did fix the Push issue. What you need to do is a Restore, but when the dialog box asks if you would like to apply the Back Up iTunes has, that back up needs to not have any of your mail settings. Here you go:
    1) plug the phone into your mac and sync with iTunes.
    2) eject & unplug the iphone
    3) on the phone go to settings>mail, contact, calendar>select your mail accounts and delete them. When the "keep on iPhone" question appears choose <delete from my iPhone>.
    4) Reboot the iPhone.
    5) Now plug your "Mail-less" iPhone into your mac (if it starts to sync- cancel it..you just did a sync).
    6) Hold down the Control key while you click on your IPhone under Devices in iTunes. From the menu that appears select "Back Up"
This creates a back up of your iPhone without any trace of your Mail settings.
    7) Click Restore in the Summary Tab in iTunes. When the restore is finished it asks if you would like to restore from a back up. You bet you would.
    8) After all the smoke clears ( it transfers your stuff over and restarts a few times) grab your mail-less iPhone and set up your mail account as if your phone was right off the shelf.
FIXED..so long as you remembered to turn Push notifications on

Fantastic! Worked a treat - thanks!
