As I said, a weak or dead PRAM battery can reportedly cause odd startup issues. If it has never been changed in six years, that's a really long-lasting battery, even if the iMac was kept on continuously.
They are pretty cheap from the right source, so you may want to try changing it.

  • Sleep and Shut Down problems

    Here's the problem: several months ago my iMac went to sleep and when I hit the space bar to wake it up, the pinwheel started spinning and there was a series of ten clicks, a pause, and then ten clicks again, over and over. The clicks were coming from the hard drive area in the computer. I did a hard re-boot and it was fine for awhile but then the problem came back when the hard drive went to sleep.
    Then, when I would try to start it up after shutting it down, a similar thing would happen: no desktop, one click, then an infinite series of ten clicks from the hard drive with a pause in between each series.
    I tried unplugging everything, letting it click away for as long as it felt like it. Eventually the clicking stopped, but the folder with the question mark came up. I restarted and restarted over and over and eventually the computer came back up with no problems.
    I called Apple and they felt it was a software issue. They talked me through some diagnostics, resetting the PRAM, Disk First Aid and then finally wiping the hard drive and starting over. I reinstalled my applications and it worked fine for awhile; I was able to shut down and start up, as well as put the drive to sleep without any problems.
    Then, it happened again on shut down and subsequent start up. Once again, I restarted over and over and eventually it came back up. Since then I have turned all the Energy Saver options to "Never" and haven't shut down since. Except once when the power went out. I had the same problems starting up.
    I still think that it's a software thing because otherwise I haven't had one problem with this beauty of a machine.
    Anybody got any ideas?

    Zambini, welcome to Discussions. I would tend to think you have a hardware problem. The clicking is probably the hard drive and the reason it has trouble starting is if the hard drive isn't functioning properly then the Imac isn't finding the OS on the hard drive and can't start up properly. I would definitely get ahold of Apple and let them know what is going on STILL and that reloading has not fix it. It may also be the motherboard but would definitely think hardware. Good luck and let us know how it goes with Apple. Bob :~))

  • Sleep and Shut-down menu commands

    Our 500 MHz Power PC G3, upgraded to system 10.4.6, is a great machine and a real work horse for us. However, it has been acting up lately. The apple symbol drop down menu command that puts the computer to sleep, restart, shut down etc. will not respond. The key board commands for sleep etc. also don't work. I tried the Disk Utilitly- First Aid, both Disk Repairs and Permissions. "No repairs were necessary" for both. I even reinstalled OS 10.4.6 which seems to have complicated the problem and ate a big chunk of our precious little harddrive memory. Now every time I start up I get the warning message, "Application Launch Failure" The applicaton "Transport Monitor' could not be launched
    because of a shared library error:"8<Transport Monitor><Transport Monitor><HotSyncLib.PPC><"
    Could this be the root of the drop-down menu problem?

  • System sleep and shut down not working after upgrade to windows 10

    HiI upgraded my OS from win 8.1 to win 10.After the upgrades the system shutdown and sleep are not working properly.It's like when I shutdown/sleep the system ,the screen shuts down but the power key keeps glowing and also the battery keeps draining.So eachtime I have to foercefully press the power button to shutdown the system. I have updated the display driver . Please someone  suggest, what to do ?

    Hi there ,  Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome! I read your post on the HP Support Forums and seen that you are having issues with your HP Pavilion 15-n260tx Notebook PC and the Sleep/Shut down options. It sounds like you might be having an issue with one of the features of Windows called Hybrid Shutdown that is used for the Fast Startup feature.  Here are a couple of links for you about Fast Startup, Hybrid Shutdown and How to Shut down your Notebook completely. They also have some troubleshooting steps in them.   1. Fast Startup - Turn On or Off in Windows 10.2. Shut Down Computer in Windows 10. If those do not work, I do have some more documentation for you to read and try.  1. Shut down (turn off), sleep, or hibernate your PC - This document is from Microsoft. 2. HP Notebook PCs - Managing Power Options (Windows 8)3. HP PCs - Sleep and Hibernate Issues (Windows 10, 8) Sometimes a BIOS Update will work. You can update all of your drivers by going to the HP Driver's website or by using the HP Support Assistant. On the Driver's page there is not an update for the Windows 10 Column, but there was an update that just came out under Windows 8.1 on Aug 7, 2015 that should work for your Notebook.  Another fix that may work is to Run the Troubleshooter. Please follow this link to run the Windows Update Troubleshooter.   I hope this helps!  Have a great day!

  • Lenovo Miix 2 10: Sleep and shut down causes restart

    I fairly recently ran into a problem with the Miix 2 10. It works perfectly fine otherwise, apart from two issues:
    1. I can't put the computer to sleep. Hitting the power button, or selecting sleep from the power menu, or waiting long enough for sleep to engage via power options causes the screen to turn black, the computer won't wake by pressing the power button, and after a bit (under a minute?) the Lenovo boot up screen shows and the computer boots up "normally". This happens no matter how sleep mode is engaged. Basically the same behavior also happens when I select Shut down from the power menu, the computer shuts down normally and then after a little bit (under a minute again) the computer boots up again. The only way to shut down the computer so that it'll stay down is to hold the power button down so long the computer shuts down forcibly. Or wait for the battery to run out...
    2. Almost no Windows updates will install. All of them fail with the following message: Code 80073712 Windows Update ran into a problem. I've searched high and low for a solution to the Windows Update problem, tried everything MS had to offer (short of factory reset or reinstall) and nothing has worked.
    Truth be told I'm mostly worried about the first problem, not so much the Windows Update one. The sleep issue essentially stops me from using my Miix 2 10 as a tablet at all, I have to treat it like an always on laptop, and I have to even run screensavers to prevent possible screen issues because it's always on ("turn off screen" seems to also shut down the computer). Our local Lenovo only supports corporate computers, servers and professional laptops, and as far as I can see I can't contact Lenovo US in any way other than phoning them, so I'm more than a bit stuck with this.
    As far as I can tell this is related to either BIOS or the CPU driver package. I installed the latest updates some time ago and afterwards this behavior came in, making it almost impossible to really use the unit. Should have known better than to update any drivers when everything was working fine...
    If anyone has any ideas that could help, I'm all ears. I've heard there are some BIOS settings related to power management that could cause this, but you can adjust absolutely nothing of any use whatsoever in the Miix 2's BIOS. It's completely useless when it comes to that. I'd really want to try and roll back the BIOS drivers, but that's not possible since they aren't available anywhere, so I think I'll just have to return the unit.
    EDIT: Just in case it matters, if I look into the Device Manager I can see that many if not most of the stuff running on the Intel driver package (the Baytrail processor driver package includes a lot of stuff like the camera drivers) seems to be saying something about the power states that may or may not be relevant: Power states D0 (full power) and D3 (Sleep) are listed as supported, and the power states are mapped as follows:
    S0 -> D0
    S1 -> Unspecified
    S2 -> Unspecified
    S3 -> Unspecified
    S4 -> D3
    S5 -> D3
    A couple of them, for example ACPI X86-based PC, say D3 to S1-3 as well.

    i think i find solution.

  • High-pitched beep/sound during sleep and shut down modes

    I just wish to check whether is it normal that there's high pitched beep (not very loud but can be heard in a quiet room) which seems to be from the LED or AC Adapter during sleep mode. The beep sounds continuous when the computer has been shut down or in off mode while the main plug of where the ac adapter is connected to is still on. Is this normal? My computer works fine. Battery is charging fine. I just want check whether is this normal. It is has been like that ever since I bought my computer on March 2012.
    HP Pavilion dm4-3005tx Entertainment Notebook PC

    Hello Huanwei,
    It appears that you can hear a "high pitched beep" coming from the notebook while it's in sleep mode or even off, when the power adapter is plugged in and "on". I will try to help you with this.
    Normally, this should not happen. Beeping from a computer may happen during start up a few times to indicate components enabling, but any constant beeping or being while the computer is off shouldn't happen.
    Does this occur, if the AC adapter is not connected to the notebook when it is in sleep mode or off? Do you only notices this, in a specific location? (office, etc.)
    I would suggest, depending on the setup of things. Taking the notebook with no AC to another location in the house. A quiet one, make sure your not near any other electronics (no watches or cell phones either) let the notebook sleep and see if you hear the beeping. If not, then power it off and test again. If no beeping, this is good and the notebook is fine.
    Repeat that same test with the power adapter connected ( again no other electronics around you). Listen while it is "sleeping" and off to see if you can hear the beeping again.
    If you do disconnect the AC from the notebook , but leave that connected to the wall and take the notebook out of that location, go back to see if you can hear beeps again. If you do it could be the AC adapter. If you don't then it could be an issue with that only when it's connected.
    If there was no beeping when the AC was connected in this "testing location", then I would guess it is something else within the house that is beeping (we have seen that before). In which case you'd have nothing to worry about in regard to your notebook.
    Let me know where the above leads.
    Thank you for posting on the HP Forums.

  • Sleep and shut-down

    Hi
    I wonder if it's normal that, when shutting down my MBP, I've got to wait for it to be totally turned off before I can close the lid. If I close the lid during the shutting down process the MBP very often go to sleep.
    If this is the normal behaviour, it doesn't seems to me so much efficent.
    I suppose very few code would be needed to have the lid-linked sleeping command excluded when the shutting down process starts.
    PS: I use 10.4.9, so maybe the problem as been fixed in leopard.
    bye
    Angelo

    I have been told previously by more than one Genius at the Apple store that the shut down function should not be done very often, just to put my laptop to sleep most often. I don't know if that is different for MBP. This is my 5th apple laptop (original 'portable'mac, powerbook 180, clamshell ibook, wallstreet powerbook, and powerbook g4) and have always relied on putting them to sleep rather than shut down on a day to day basis. So your issue is not usually a problem, since closing them puts them to sleep as you noted. If you are shutting down, I think you do need to wait for it to complete the process before closing your laptop.

  • My 3gs won't hold a full charge for long, and also won't stay in any ap for more than 2 minutes and shuts down. I have replaced the battery, same symptoms. Any ideas out there?

    My iPhone baffles me. It started doing this and I was told it was the battery, so I replaced the battery. Nope, same issues. Here they are. After a full charge which takes only about an hour, it rapidly loses power after another hour or so. While in my apps, I can keep them open for maybe 2 minutes and they shut down. When I do the double tap to see whats running, the apps I opened are, however they are't. Wierd stuff here folks I hope someone has had this before and can help me out. I don't have a job and cant' afford a new phone.
    thanks for help in advance.

    Double-tapping the home button does not show apps that are running.  This is not a task manager, it is merely a list of recently used/accessed apps.
    Basic troubleshooting of the device is reset, restart, restore.  Has a reset or restore been tried?
    Check to see if updates exists for the apps, this could be a simple issue of a badly coded or buggy app that needs to be updated.

  • Restart and shut down problems on MBA

    Hi Community,
    I have the OS X Lion 10.7.3 Software on my MBA, since I bought it last year in the summer, so maybe my case is a warranty issue!
    I normally put my MBA to sleep, but sometimes try to shut it down, it worked just fine before, but since a couple of days it doesn't restart and
    won't shut down, the gray wheel modus until I press the shut down button for couple of seconds. I don't won't to shut it down only this way,
    there is obviously a problem. I already installed the new update from the software and it didn't even ask to restart, normally it has to restart after an update, right?
    I have tried to shut it down from the guest account and it worked just fine.
    So it would be great, if someone else has some tips to this issue.
    Thx,
    Yulya

    If you boot into Lion recovery mode (boot holding the command and R keys down), bring up Disk Utility and do a repair disk. Also repair permissions while you're there.  If that completes without error, reboot using the Safe Boot by holding the shift key down when booting. That may take longer than normal. If that completes, try a regular boot.
    If issue still remains, download the 10.7.3 combo update from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1484 . Before installing it, bring up Disk Utility (on your hard drive in applications/utilities) and repair permissions. Install the combo update, then repair permissions again.
    If those steps don't fix it, the next step may be to reload 10.7, however, you may want to take it to the Apple store to see if they have any other guidance. It doesn't sound like a hardware problem, though.

  • Start up problems and shutting down problems

    i have an hp pavilion all in one desk top computer and i'm having problems with the start up, sometimes when i turn it on i get as far as typing in my password and then the screen goes blank and i have to shut it off manually and turn it back on, but when i do it says failure to configure windows updates and reverting changes, and when i go to shut it down it shuts down but stays running so i have to start it again wait to put my password in then i can get it to shut down but yesterday when i went to shut it down i went to settings and clicked shut down and it wouldn't do anything so i manually shut it off and turned it back on , can anyone tell me what is causing these problems and how i can fix it.

    Hello again octopus78,
    Based on the information you have given me, I would suggest following this document on when the Screen is Blank after Starting the Computer.
    If the issue persists I suggest creating a backup by following this document on Backing Up Your Files (Windows 8). The next step will be to recover your Operating System by Performing an HP System Recovery (Windows 8).

  • Startup and shut down problems with Nano

    I am wondering if there are any preferences or settings I can change to prevent the following annoying problems:
    1. The Nano starts up on its own when jostled around in a bag with other items. Sometimes it will actually start playing and shuffling songs via the built-in speaker and drain the battery.
    2. The Nano is sometimes difficult to shut down: while holding the shut-off button at the bottom of the wheel, a menu drops down asking if I want to add the current song to "on-the-go." I am then forced to scroll up the menu to choose "cancel" and try to shut down again. Sometimes this irritating occurrence repeats itself over and over. Whatever "on-the-go" is, I would rather disable it than have this keep happening.

    The Hold button is on the top of the iPod Nano not on the scroll wheel = iPod Nano 5th Gen. User Manual.

  • PC is not going to sleep or shut down after upgrade to Windows10

    Hello,I upgraded my laptop from win 8.1 to win 10.Now when I close the lid or press the power button, the computer turns the screen off, turns the WIFI off, no more hard disk activity but it is not going to sleep.Also when I shut it down it goes throught the same procedure but never turns off.To start again, I have to keep pressing the power button to turn it off, then turn it on again.I did the powercfg - energy and got this in the report, "USB Suspend:USB Device not Entering Selective Suspend"When the computer had just started, I don't get that message, it also goes to sleep and shuts down normally, while later, I get this message in the report and no longer sleeps or shuts down.Any suggestion ??Thanks

  • Laptop won't go to sleep mode and shut down properly.

    hello,           My name is Atul and i upgraded my laptop hp pavilion 15-p017tu from win 8.1 to win 10 on 29h july. My laptop was working great before the upgrade and before upgrading i updraded ( updated ) all the drivers and windows too.          so, after the upgrade i have been facing the same problem which has been shared by many peple here..i.e win doesn't go to sleep mode. In my case when ever i put the sys to sleep mode, the screen turns off but the power button doesn't blinks and i can't go back to the normal mode by using mouse curser or pressing the power button back. I have to physically shut down the system by pressing the power button for 5 seconds.         Also, my system won't shut down properly and it is the same as the sleep mode probem. I have contacted the customer care of microsoft and hp both and they did some setting changes but the problem keeps coming back. I have also told by the hp care that they will take atleast a month or two to fix this as this may be due to hardware not supporting the current driver so this might take time. They also told me to just downgrade to win 8.1 and after sometime when this poblem is fixed i can again install and upgrade win 10. If any of you guys know how to fix this problem do share it here.      thanks!!
