Solution on sticky powerbook?!?!

Hi,
My powerbook has been giving me some headaches recently with black screens of death, stopping for no reason, kernal trap errors etc.etc. and this I'm sure ties-in with the problems I have been having with the memory modules...
Anyhow, a colleague of mine suggested that the memory may be touching the back of the memory cover and shorting out?! and suggested perhaps cutting a small rectangle of anti-static bag and placing on the memory before I put the cover back on?
Oh well, thought I would give this a try and hey, it's kinda working. My powerbook hasn't stopped yet and it would normally after being on all day. It's 10.40pm GMT and all OK.
One quick question though, is this going to be OK? I'm not going to build-up a charge on the memory module doing this?!?
Would be interested to hear what other people think...
Thanks!

OK, ignore this. My powerbook decided to crash twice last night soon after it booted-up.
Repair I think!

  • Powerbook freeze - disc burning related?

Once every 8 to 16 hours or so, my Powerbook (15-inch Aluminum, 1.25 Ghz) appears to freeze during I/O, and eventually brings down my system in the process. I was wondering if anyone has any ideas or solutions.
    - the Powerbook develops a lengthy delay when put to Sleep mode. The screen would go dark, but it would take about a minute or so for the white LED (at the front of the machine) to come on. During this minute, the machine is unresponsive to any input, can't be awoken, and can't be SSH'ed into. Once the light comes on, I can then get it to wake as normal.
    - Once this happens, Disk Utility hangs at "Gathering Information" when opened.
    - The System Profiler locks up if I click on the "Disc Burning" section. All other sections work fine. On the ATA section, the SuperDrive shows up as normal.
    - Toast Titanium hangs at launch time. Other programs launch, with a lengthy delay at opening and quitting time.
    - Eventually, the entire machine becomes unresponsive.
    - Rebooting the machine does fix the problem. But only for about 8 to 16 hrs. And then the cycle begins anew.
I can't create a consistent procedure to reproduce the problem, which is always annoying. Resetting the PMU did not help. Permission repair reported nothing, and Single-User Mode fsck managed to fix "minor" errors to the volume header, which may actually have been a result of a hard reset I had to do.
There is absolutely nothing suspicious in the console.log and system.log.
I replaced the DC-in/sound board a month ago, due to an issue with battery charging. But I also installed OS X 10.4.9 on March 13. The problem cropped up just a little more than a week ago.
What do you think, software or hardware? It's odd that a restart would fix a hardware issue, if it was a hardware issue... but it is somewhat linked to the Superdrive. Any additional diagnostics that I haven't thought of? Because this is my primary machine and has all of my ongoing development work on it, reinstalling an OS would be a last resort.

I investigated this a bit further, and it seems that if the machine does wake up again (if it's not in the zombie-ish, Sleep but not really Sleep state), it responds to SSH. So the kernel isn't panic'ed. Only the user interface is not responding.
If I kill the loginwindow process remotely and force the user to log out, I can then log in again. However, any access that relates to Disc Burning in some way blocks. System Profiler, for example, freezes (and can't be killed even by sudo kill -9) if I click on the Disc Burning tab, but works fine otherwise.
And eventually, the user interface will become unresponsive again (mouse pointer moves, but nothing responds) unless I remotely kill the user session.

  • PB Titanium freezes on boot; Volume error

Erratic behavior followed a "force quit" on Palm Desktop. On reboot error message while attempting to open Palm Desktop, "...unexpected end of file." Corrected that with backed up file but then erratic behaviors involving freezes during and after reboot began. Freezes can only resolved by shutting down and restarting. Sometimes video screen dark with portions of boot up screen visible. Unable to replicate behaviors, results too erratic. Ran TechTools boot disk, initially hardware and file tests "passed". Then a force quit on Geditcom (normally very stable!), returned the behaviors involving freezes. Reset PMU, Reran Disk First Aid and Tech Tool unable to repair. produced this error message, "Missing thread record (id = 4407162) Error the underlying on ent (-9972) Repair attempted 1 volume could not be repaired. Resore disk only seem to allow erasing the volume not restoring OSX (10.3.9). Changed the start up disk to a "PB Clone" (with systemfiles) on on a firewire external hard drive. Chime sounds, screen lights, apple appears, pinwheel does not, screen goes dark nothing faintly visible. CTRLCOMMANDPower Button restarts the same sequence and results.
Anxious not to destroy the data files unless I have to. Suspect that there the current state may perhaps be hardware despite the "passed" Tech Tool tests, perhaps video and/or keyboard although like problems had ocurred with USB keyboard and external display during earlier troubleshooting.
Don't understand why my firewire external Powerbook will not start up. The Apple Restore Disk and Tech Tool boot disk work although the video light up has some idiosyncracies?
Is it likely that I can put it in "firewire mode (Target Disc)" and access the files on its HD?
Sure could use some theories or solutions.

    Hi tirediron,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Is it likely that I can put it in "firewire mode (Target Disc)" and access the files on its HD?
I don't know what the odds are, but if you have access to another FW Mac, there's no reason not to try; it'll only cost you $10-15 for a FW cable (if you don't have one) and a minute or two of your time to find out.

  • Keynote won't open in all accounts on same machine

I started having problems with keynote ver2 on g4 17 inch powerbook after going from 10.3.9 to 10.4.4 so to solve the problem i purchased i works06 and installed it as an update however the problem persists
namely when i attempt to launch or open existing keynote file the program won't load or crashes before any thing happens on the screen
the really strange thing is i set up a new user account and then opened keynote and voila it works but not under the original(and prev only) account
i have restarted , run disk repair/permissions reinstalled trashed plist files till i'm blue in the face
mail is also acting weird since update
    any suggestions or solutions??

if a new user works it's either your Keynote prefs (maybe you missed one?) or there could be a bad font in your user fonts folder. Past that I can't think of anything user specific that would crash Keynote.

  • Songs cut off then play next song

When I play a series of songs they play about 90% of a song and then start to play the next song.

I am having the same problem. This may be the same problem identified in an earlier posting by "The Dark Man" (posted 12/30/05,7:53 am); and perhaps also in "Chad Koenig" (last posted 12/30/05, 11:41 AM). On mine, it is a matter of the iPod displaying an incorrect song length.
Like "The Dark Man," I would also like to find solution.

  • Help Needed With Creative X-Fi Xtreme Audio 7.1 Soundcard -

    Hi All,
I need some help I have just installed the Creative X-Fi Xtreme Audio 7. Soundcard - OEM from overclockers uk - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=SC-049-CL
My problem is this my machine is constantly sounding the 'Device Connected' and 'Device Disconnedted' Windows Sound, But there are no new devices my system was working perfectly fine until after installing the card.
My Mobo Is Abit AI7 with BIOS 9, Onboard sound disabled, VGA BIOS Cachable dis abled and there is not over clocking running.
I have removed my Dual DVB-T Tunner replaced it with a different one, moved the 2 PCI card around different slots and still that bloomin sound.
Its got to the point now I have turned my speakers OFF
    Anyone got an answer?
    TIA
    Andy

You know it helps to post solutions if it's working fine for you. Moreover, unless you have the same hardware as someone else what works for you won't necessarily work for them.
That said, @ the OP have you tried setting the mic as default under the Sound settings? (Type Sound in the search bar and click on the "Sound" entry to find it.)
    Also this may help
[Edit I wish these solutions were stickied or in an FAQ somewhere, activating/problems with the mic seem to come up quite a lot. Oh and I dunno if this will help too but when I had garbled mic issues on my X-Fi a complete uninstall and clean down with Driver cleaner seemed to fix it.]

  • Safari crash, Apple security update doesn't make sence

At first, I used safari 1.3( I use Mac OS X 10.3.9), but It broke down, any time i tried to close a window, quit or open a large website, safari hung up, and unresponding for a while, then it closed suddently. I had a sugesstion to send the bug report to Apple, I did for thousand times. I was tired, so I changed in to safari 1.2, It worked well, but after I installed the security update, even the version 1.2 had exactly the same problem. It drives me crazy, I have to use Firefox while i prefer Safari. does any one have any solutions? Thanks

I'm having the same problem, but I can't figure out what to do to fix it. I removed my Cookies file, but Safari still crashes when it tries to load a web page.
I'm hoping that iBod can have a look at my crash report and help me the way he helped Surfyournut and the others...

  • ITunes freezes when downloading video

I have twice purchased TV episodes through iTunes. I was changed each time but no download took place. Each time, iTunes froze as the download was to start and had to be force quit. Selecting "check for purchases" in the advanced menue of iTunes causes the same freeze. I emailed tech support 5 days ago but have not received a reply.

My iTunes freezes lately no matter what kind of content I am downloading after purchase (audio or video). The progress bar starts up, and withing about 2 or 3 seconds, freezes. I've tried trashing my iTunes preferences, and have run the disk utility, but nothing I've done has corrected the problem.
Has anyone come up with a solution?

  • Can't Mount ISO Files

    Hello.
    Here's my problem.
Downloaded two zip files, one containing a file ending in "iso.1", the other one "iso.2". Deleted the numbers and left the files with "iso" endings.
Neither using Disc Utility, nor Toast Titanium, nor burning discs with those files and inserting them back into the computer could help mount them.
As the result, there is either a popup window saying no mountable files were found, or the mounted file contains a large audio track (it's supposed to be software!)
    Any solutions, please?
    PowerBook G4 12-inch   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I'm slightly confused about the circumstances under which you obtained these two files.
It sounds like you downloaded two different .zip files from some source, and unarchiving one of them resulted in a .iso.1 file, and the other resulted in a .iso.2 file.
And they're supposed to contain 1 piece of software between the two of them???
OK... in that case, I've got a couple suggestions:
    1. first, try putting the .1 and .2 back and opening the first one in DiskUtility. If disk utility is disinclined to open it, launch disk utility, then drag the file to it's dock icon while holding apple-option (or something like that)
    2. second, try concatenating the files. that would be wierd, but it's worth a try... to do this, open a new terminal window, and then type:
    "cat "
(don't type the quotes in), then drag the first file (the one originally named .iso.1), then hit space, then drag in the second file (when you drag a file into the terminal, it will automatically fill in it's path in the terminal. if you're comfortable in the terminal and know what I mean, you can just type the path yourself.) then type:
">~/Desktop/newtestisofile.iso" (leave out the quotes again) and finally hit return. This will put the two files together into 1 on the desktop which will be called newtestisofile.iso, which you should try opening in diskutility
    3. in the terminal again, type "file " and then drag in the first file, and hit return. post the output here so we can see it. do the same thing with the second file
    4. just give us a link for this download, so that we can try directly, rather than having to tell you to try stuff.

  • OSX Printing Problems after Installing Bonjour for Windows in Parallels

Since I installed Parallels a few weeks ago I had no need to print from Windows. Yesterday I had need so I installed the Apple Bonjour for Windows and the necessary print driver (Brother HL-1430) and was able to print.
The issue I have is that I can no longer print from OS-X. In fact every time I try and print from whatever program the program quits unexpectedly. I have tried all the solution offered on Apple's support web site but to no avail. My printer is connected wirelessly via an Airport Express. This works fine for Parallels with Windows XP and for our two other Macs. It just does not work with my iMac and this is only since I installed Bonjour for Windows on this machine.
Can anyone help with a solution?

  • QuickTime compatible video camera?

In frustration with Apple's dropping of the iSight Cameras and no word of a replacement, I looked desperately for a web-cam solution for my PowerBook 15 and my Mac Mini.
I will be working away from home and the ability to video chat with the family will be wonderful, IF I can find a substitute camera that will WORK with the Mac's. My MacBook allows the family to see me in all the methods we have tried, but we need to "turn the camera's on them" so to speak.
In some forum (here? TUAW?) I read that a digital video camera with firewire and "QuickTime" compatibility will be a great substitute, but what is meant by QuickTime compatibility? I have a new Panasonic video camera, and wonder if it will work.

    Hi BrianDubya,
Any Firewire DV output (6 pin to 6pin) Camcorder
    Any Firewire Web cam
Any USB cam that has Mac drivers and this Utility
    http://www.ecamm.com/mac/ichatusbcam/
The chances are that any USB cam is going to have
Windows drivers (if you need them for a Intel)

    I love Macs.
I came in from out of town and tried all three of my computers, 2 PowerPCs Macs and one Intel MacBook with the video camera and all I have to do is plug the camera in.
Bada Bing!! The Panasonic PV-GS250 works everytime with Yahoo Messenger, Skype, and iChat.
After the 2-1/2 hours I spent "connecting" a new HP Laptop and new HP printer and getting it communicating and on-line (THAT's TWO and A HALF HOURS!!) I am glad I discovered Apple Inc products.
Thannks for your help in this!

  • Bug in catalog:getActiveSources()

There is no way for a plugin to accurately determine the current source.  If the current source is All Photographs,  Quick Collection, or Previous Import, the method catalog:getActiveSources() returns the empty table {}, but it should return catalog.kAllPhotos, .kQuickCollectionIdentifier, or .kPreviousImport.

Yeah, if this were working, one could implement "sticky collections" as a background task:
    - get active sources
    - assure sticky collection is one of them
    - set active source that include the sticky collection, if not already set...
Although, as long as it returns the correct source for most situations, it may not be too bad...
Probably not a good solution for sticky privacy collections, since there would be a moment when it becomes unstuck.
    Anyway, just brainstorming...

  • Default fonts  Keynote 3.0.1 Unwanted shadowed text.

I need to convert my Keynote presentations to a form users can print from Powerpoint (without colours, backgrounds, pictures etc.) I change the theme to the plain White before exporting to Powerpoint, but even before exporting I'm left with shadows under the text after changing from my earlier theme. As a result, text is smudged. It looks worse in Powerpoint. I can't find a way to remove these unwanted shadows -- not even in the masters of the original theme. Can anyone suggest a solution?

  • Juice spilled all over keyboard 2 weeks ago

    hello,
my friend spilled juice all over her 8 month old powerbookG4 15" about 4 weeks ago. She sent it to the computer repair shop and they sent it to Apple to repair, and the repair price tag was about $1350! So she said forget it, she'll just get a new one, the latest and greatest. SO now she gave me this sticky powerbook to fix and I'm wondering where I should start.
The keyboard is not functional, a few of the keys on the periphery work, but not really because they don't correspond to what is on the actual key (i.e. pressing the "shift" key shows the number "9"...it doesn't make any sense, and most of the keys don't do anything. It looks like someone started playing with it because the delete key doesn't bounce anymore and it is depressed a few millimeters below the rest of the keys.
I attached another keyboard to it and it works fine otherwise. The mouse pad and mouse button on the keyboard actually work, the button is just a little sticky on one side.
Should I take it all apart and use rubbing alchol to clean the keyboard? Do you think it is worth it, if it works with a peripheral keyboard? What if I damage the motherboard or anything else? Then the whole thing is a goner. Is it easy to take apart?
Should I run some other tests to check the health of this doused computer?
    thank you...........

If it works fine except for the keyboard, IMO, you probably have a nice deal there. Forget about saving the keyboard. Just buy a new assembly (about $130), and save the old keycaps and scissors under each key to sell on ebay. They're worth $8 each. Follow the directions on ifixit.com for replacing the keyboard. It's not easy, but not too hard. While it's open, clean any other dried juice out with plain water, disassembling parts as needed. Believe it or not, most circuit boards are cleaned with water during assembly, then baked. Some parts are added afterwards and should be kept dry - if you don't know, keep it dry. Check the optical drive. Replacements are about $150. Sugar is death to electrical circuits - it corrodes them rapidly.
The reason these keyboards aren't easy to repair is that the electrical contacts under each key are inside a plastic sheet sandwich which is semi-sealed. Fluid enters the sandwich and is almost impossible to get out, let alone wash clean and get dry again.

  • Nokia 6230i oneway sync

I have just adjusted all the sync devices, and -though the first time everything worked ok- now, the addressbook only works from my mobile to the computer, but not the other way round, although the calendar information does.. any explanation or/and solution?
    thanks
    powerbook G4

I had the same problem with
    - XP service pack 2
    - D-Link DBT-120 USB Bluetooth stick (version B4)
    - Nokia 6230i
I have been browsing the net and trying things on and off for the last year, getting more and more frustrated as this is not the cheapest phone and the Outlook sync function was exactly one of the reasons why I bought it.
    To get it working:
    - Uninstall Nokia and D-Link software (everything)
    - Reboot
    - Run the Nokia PC Cleaner and clean everything(http://www.nokia.com/A4144912)
    - Reboot
    - Connect the Bluetooth stick and just let Windows install its stack. I haven't tried it with the WIDCOMM stack provided with the D-Link software as the windows stack works just fine.
    - Install PC Suite
Why did it fail in the first place:
The first time that I installed everything, the Windows stack was interfering with the WIDCOMM stack. Even after uninstalls, the registry was already messed up. I just can't believe I have not heard of this PC Cleaner before. Note that the Benelux Nokia site doesn't mention it anywhere!
Thank you so much! You've made my day! :-D
