Solution other than nfs for centralized baskup location on Unix?

Good afternoon,
I am trying to setup RMAN and am currently in discussions with our Unix team. They have expressed a certain uneasiness in using NFS mounts on multiple machines to achieve the same results as creating a share on W2K. Is there an alternative to using NFS that will accomplish the same results?

A: That would be Samba / CIFS.
Really though you need to ask the Unix team why they object to NFS ie: is this a throughput / network traffic problem or something else?
If you're planning to centralise your backup solution through an existing network you'll run into this problem all the time.

Most likely a hardware failure, & if so, you won't be able to restore/activte your phone. If you've tried at least two times, & are still getting this error, make an appointment at any Apple store, or call AppleCare.

I recently upgraded to Lion, and immediately started having consistent problems with Open Office 12 (would hang, and need a Force quit to recover). Has anybody else seen these problems? Any solutions other than going back to Snow Leopard? (I did).

Hi Pete. The repair of disk permissions can help resolve any application crashing or misbehaving.
As for Lion and the two camps, I think that is a reasonable observation. In my office we have about a dozen Mac's and about one third of those Mac's had problems after updating from 10.6 to 10.7. The main problem for these Mac's was a loss of wifi stability. But for the other two-thirds, Lion was a smooth transition.
Personally, my Lion experience was fine. But I did get a new i7 MacBook Pro with Lion already installed and only had to migrate my user data from a 10.6.8 TM backup.
So I think that is a key for Lion's operational success. A clean install of Lion on a new Mac would not cause too many operational issues. But an installation, or more correctly, an update to Lion from SL increased the chances of failure for some users - especially when old software & plugins resided on the Mac. And I would say that they were the people that you saw at the Apple store.
As for the "latest release of Lion fixed my problems" statement, my experience with these and other forums is that people mostly only go there to complain about the problems they are having. If they are having no problems then they either keep it to themselves or they try to help the users who are experiencing trouble...

There is a hum when I hook up my IPod touch with the stereo system. If I do not use the docking station there is no hum. Is there a solution other than buying a new docking station. The on I own is 5 years old and is an apple product.

This makes sense to me. I think the issue is your misunderstanding. If you purchased an item, your Apple ID becomes tied to that permanently. So when you try to update that app, you need the password to the ID that 'OWNS' that application.
Also, I suspect you have a different ID signed into the device, which is why you can't buy with your own. That article listed shows how to change the signed in account.

Does anyone know of any VPN server solutions for Mac OS X other than the basic one included in Leopard Server?

I use the one that comes with Leopard as well as VPNClient from Cisco. I have to use the Cisco one for one connection which requires we use this client.

os is on drive c:
page file is on drive d:
scratch disk is on drive e:
media cache is on drive f:
footage is on drive g:, h:
final render is on drive i:
i have an esata external enclosure
with 4 more drives
i would like to install video copilot and red giant plugins on drive j:
and install some boris plugins on drive k:
it has been said that adobe programs like to be on c:
my question is am i setting myself up for trouble
by installing plugins (and the subsequent footage associated with these plugins)
on drives other than c:?
(i am not comfortable setting up any kind of raid yet
so everything is being treated as single drives)
(also, all drives are 10k)

and 16gb DDR3 1600Mhz 9-9-9-24 memory
what are stable results to expect for an oc'ed cpu
and memory running at 1600?
would oc'ing the cpu be worth the extra 'wear and tear'?
i'm editing avchd .mts files
(most threads state that avchd is cpu intensive)
so far i'm very happy with cs5

What are the options other than iCloud for a "full" iPone backup?

With such a big gap between 20gb and 200gb, I am looking for feedback on other cloud options other than iCloud that will backup everything on my new iPhone 6.

Managing the backup of your phone starts with knowing what is backed up, what is NOT, backed up and how to manage your data/phone content.
What is NOT backed up to icloud:
Apps, music, and any other iTunes purchase.
What IS backed up to icloud:
your personal information, settings and data
if you open settings, icloud, storage, manage storage, show all apps.
this shows your app data amounts in decending order. You can turn off backup for any app that doesn't need iCloud backup. For example, I use Dropbox which auto uploads all my photo and video when I connect to home wifi, so I do not backup camera roll, so I turn the switch off. I do backup data from other apps, but not all of them.
I backup an iPad and iPod touch to the same iCloud account with the 5 free GBS and have not needed more than that.

Physical Assests like Mobile Phone, laptop, car, Books, keys, cloths etc. These are the loaned objects given by an employer to
an employee.
Using IT 0040- Objects on Laon you will be able to keep a track of the same. You can create different subtypes in IT 0040 as per your requirement.

When I go to the crash report page the signature is null for ALL the crash reports. Is there any solution other than uninstall this version and try to install an eariler version? I don't have many add-ons and they never caused a problem before.

Every since I updated to version 4 my browser has been constantly crashing, especially when I have a few tabs open. I need to give up on this version. My computer is windows XP sp3. Can I uninstall version 4 and install an earlier version and still get my add-ons? I don't have many, but xmarks and firebug are important to me.
Now this form is malfunctioning.

Try to uninstall the current Java version and maybe delete the Java installation folder (C:\Java) if that didn't work.

From which folder did you delete the extensions.* files?
Firefox should have recreated at least extensions.rdf.

Stuck CD in drive: is there a solution other than upside-down?

It seems that everytime someone has a CD stuck in their DVD drive, the solution is to hold the computer upside-down, press F12, or something similarly "agricultural"... When it happened to me the firtst time, I was in such a panic that when, eventually, it spit it out, I was too thankful to question the fact that, surely, it is NOT normal to have to go through this upside-down-press F12 (and pray) procedure to simply eject a CD.
Is there another solution to stuck CDs? For example:
- Return Computer to Apple for servicing? What would they do to it anyway? It seems that it's not just my own DVD drive that happens to be faulty. Rather, it seems much more common as a problem, which might point out to some inherent fault with the DVD drive. In other words, I cannot imagine Apple servicing being able to repair it, and replacing it would not yield necessarilly better results.
- Replace the DVD drive with a third-party option, at my cost? I almost wouldn't mind that because I just want piece of mind, but it's just not right, is it? Why should I have to pay for it? It never said in the advertising blurb that:
"Here you have the new MacBook Pro, featuring a DVD drive that works (Please note: we kinda didn't really sort out the eject thang...sorry. But PLEASE...buy it nevertheless!)"
The short of it is that I expected a working DVD drive, and Apple failed to deliver a reliable one, generally, it seems. I want another solution than turning my computer upside-down and F12. Any suggestions?...

May I suggest the radical idea that you have Apple repair the drive?
As for others having the problem, what difference does that make to you? Get yours fixed and be on your way.
If Apple sees many units returned for a similar repair, they'll diagnose the problem and rectify it at the factory.

Can I use something other than HDMI for the apple TV?

My TV and AVR are in different locations. For this I ran the connection with cat5 and hooked it all up with component video. The AVR won't down convert the hdmi to component out so therefore I can not plug hdmi into it. Does the apple tv connect video only through hdmi? If so could I hook up a unit to the tv itself and one to the receiver independently for sound?

That won't work. The only way you can get sound to the AVR without using the HDMI or optical cable is to use it as a remote speaker from iTunes. Remote speaker doesn't push video. You would have a synchronization problem between your tv and your remote speakers driven by iTunes.

Why does my iphone 4 turn off by itself randomly? I have read many posts on this and there seems to be no solution other than replacing it.

It turns off randomly and sometimes when I try to turn it back on, it doesn't turn on right away. Sometimes it would take multiple tries before it actually turns back on. I have read many posts regarding this and there seems to be no solution. The bad thing about this also is that I don't have a warranty either.

Apple has an out of warranty or not covered under the warranty "repair" price which pays for an exchange at a discounted price off the full retail sales price, or if you qualify for upgrade pricing with your carrier you can purchase a 4S or iPhone 5 for about the same or not much more depending on storage capacity.

Anyone know of an app other than iBooks for pdfs?

Been fighting for far too long with unsyncable iPads and MBA. Upgrading to Mavericks has hidden all 7000 plus pdfs I had in iBooks. Suddenly a month or so ago they reappeared but most were not in the collections I put them in and the names I saved them under were changed back to the original file name. A couple of weeks ago they disappeared again. Adding them again from Dropbox and Evernote where I have them backed up is of no use as iBooks just hide them again
I am done with this. It is completely unusable.
So, can any one recommend an app that works the way iBooks is supposed to work?

There are a couple iPad/iPhone apps but the one that seems to work the best is this one here and it's only $19.99 and is also 3D. I don't know of a similar app for Mac.

How can I make the "Music" button on the iPhone say something other than "Music" for it's label?

The question is in the post title. I would like to change the icon which says "MUSIC" on the iPhone (formerly used to say "iPod" in the older O.S.'s) to something else. Let's say I want it to say "Audio" instead. Basically, in yet other words, I want to remane this icon to something else.
