Solution: Play count problem

As many others I had the play count problem with my iPod Shuffle which suddenly stopped working.
The solution sounds boring but seems to work: the iPod seems to be pretty inflexible, but you have to follow a precise routine to keep it working after you have reset it:
1) click 'eject' before tacking the iPod of the charger
2) switch on
3) start
4) listen
5) stop
6) switch off
7) insert in charger in 'switched off' mode
Since I don't shortcut any of these steps, I don't have the count problem anymore.

Unfortunately, this did not work for me. I tried chatting with Apple support about the issue and they suggested I call support. They had me re-install iTunes, but that did not correct the problem. Since my wife's Shuffle was updating the Play Count and Last Played correctly on her computer, I thought I would try on her computer. However, she has a older version of iTunes and it would not sync with my Shuffle. I then connected my Shuffle to my Son's laptop since he has the latest version of iTunes. iTunes required me to Erase and Sync on his computer. I did this, loaded up a few short songs, played them, and then sync'd back to his computer. It worked! I then sync'd my Shuffle with my computer (Erase and Sync, etc.) and it worked there as well!
I'm not sure what part of that process actually corrected the problem, but thought I would post this in case it helps someone else.

  • IPhone play count problem

    Hi guys,
This is my first post - my first real problem since switching to Mac a few years ago - but I seem to have a problem with the play counts on my iPhone 3GS. With my iPods the play counts updated as usual and stayed the same and increased correctly as I listened to music.
When I got my first iPhone - the 3G a few years ago - I noticed the play counts on the phone wouldn't stay the same or update correctly from sync to sync.
I'm using a MacBook Pro running the latest version of iTunes and I manually manage my music so I don't have to sync every single song - and maybe that's the problem because when I sync my iPhone the plays on my iPhone seem to increase drastically while the plays in my iTunes library stay the same. Like, my most listened to song has 1020 plays and I know that that's not right because I ain't been listening to that song 1000+ times.
I was hoping someone could tell me how the play counts works on the iPhone. Is there a way for the play counts on the iPod component of the iPhone to work like a normal iPod? Should the play counts be the same on the iPhone and iTunes library? I know it may be trivial but I'd like to keep track of how many times I listen to songs.
    Thanks for any help provided,
    Matt.

I don't know if this is how it'd work, but if one syncs with WMP, it makes it so the files in your WMP library are like those on your player. So if you have a certain rating for a song, that rating will show up in WMP, and perhaps if you played the song a few times on WMP, that play count might transfer over to the player. Just a theory, but who knows. Probably just a bug.

  • Play Count problem after converting to Lossless

I've converted a few albums to the Apple Lossless format via iTunes but am noticing that I'm losing all my play counts.
Anybody know how to keep the play counts during the conversion?

This might get a bit long, but here goes...
If you want to re-rip your songs as lossless (or any other format) and retain playcounts, artwork, last played info, etc, follow these steps:
    • Insert the CD you want to rip.
    • When it comes up in iTunes, makes sure all these items EXACTLY match the corresponding items that are already in your library:
    -Artist
    -Album name
    -each song name
-whether or not it's a compilation
-and the disc number (ie disc 1 of 2).
    • Once you're sure, then click the 'import' button. iTunes will ask if you want to replace the existing items. If you say OK, it will rip at the new settings and transfer all the track details over to the new files. It can optionally delete the old files when it's finished.
If it doesn't ask you if you want to replace, then the info doesn't match exactly and it will rip a new set of files, all with 'virgin' track info.
Also, if any individual song has info that doesn't match, you'll end up with a duplicate of that song (the old one, with the details, and a new one without.) If that happens, wait till the whole CD is done ripping, eject the disc, delete the NEW duplicate, put the disc back in, correct the mismatched info, deselect the songs on the CD that you've already ripped successfully, and re-rip the one(s) that didn't work the first time.)
For tracks that you've already re-imported that now have incorrect playcounts, there is a script available to help you set the playcounts to any desired value. You can find it here:
    http://www.dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=newplayedcount
I'm happy to try to explain further if this is unclear.

  • Play count not updating - Shuffle 1st gen

My 1st generation iPod shuffle is not updating the play count or last played fields properly.
I have tested it with a few tracks manually dragged into the iPod, and it seems to work if I do this. However the play counts do not update if I use Autofill from my smart playlist. And I tried limiting my smart playlist to 950 MB (It's a 1GB shuffle) and dragging the playlist manually. Again the play count does not update.
This is a pain as I use the smart playlist to pick songs for my iPod and I use play counts in my smart playlist criteria, so it's messed up the way I use my iPod and iTunes.
(It used to work fine when I had earlier versions of Windows, iTunes and iPod software. I had problems getting iTunes to recognise or sync with the iPod, but updating windows to Service Pack 3 fixed this. But have had this play count problem since. I have up to date versions of iTunes and iPod software.)
Anyone had a similar problem and managed to fix it?

I've had this problem too, since the 8.1 release? It had been failing in shuffle mode but not in "not shuffle"/"in order". As of today it failed to update play date/count after playing in the "not shuffle" mode. The songs that were played are untouched, but a like number of other random songs that had not been played show today's date.
The apparent lack of support for older hardware is really disappointing. It certainly does not motivate me to go out and buy more Apple hardware which they will soon stop supporting.

No Flash for iPads, iPhones, or iPods
Here's why there's is no Flash available for iDevices or other mobile devices. Adobe was unable to provide a product that was suitable to the needs of battery powered mobile devices used for Internet browsing. Existing Flash technology used too much memory, ate battery life, and was buggy. Simply put Flash did not work well on mobile devices.
Apple's Steve Jobs led the escape from Flash dependency when Apple introduced the iPhone, and later introduced the iPad. There was a hue and cry over the omission. Time proved Jobs was right on target.
So this is why there is no Flash for your iPhone or iPad or iPod nor for most SmartPhones. Flash has been abandoned by many sites in favor of supported technologies such as HTML5 or by providing their own custom app.
Here is Steve Jobs official comment on his momentous decision to omit Flash from iDevices: Steve Jobs on Flash.
Here is Adobe's later announcement to cease development of Flash for mobile devices: Adobe on Mobile Flash.
Now, you are not necessarily out on a limb. There are some apps that can display some Flash, but don't count on there ability to display anything using Flash.
Apps that can display some Flash from the Web:
    Puffin
    SkyFire
    Photon Flash
    Browse2Go
    iSwifter
Also, note that many sites that use Flash provide their own app for accessing their material. So check with your favorite sites and find out if "there's an app for that."

  • Problem when syncing: won't update itunes play count/last played etc

My old 2g shuffle was capable of updating play count/last played and adding songs to the recently played playlist when synced to my itunes.
Seems my new 3g shuffle can't do this.
I remember the trick with the 2g was to make sure it was switched off first before connecting/syncing, but I've tried all sorts of different combo's with the 3g and nothing will make it update song stats in itunes.
How can I make it update my itunes?

Ok, cool, I figured it out:-) Just in case anyone ever has the same problem, here's a quick rundown:
Basically it's the same problem you can get with 2nd gen shuffles if you're manually managing songs. So I just unticked manually manage music in the device summary and got the shuffle to sync music from a playlist I created/dumped all the songs I wanted into.

  • Problem resetting play count

    Hi all,
I've been trying to reset the play count of all my tracks in iTunes. I've been doing this by selecting all tracks (2,862 tracks) and then control clicking the mouse to reset the play count. It asks me whether I'm sure and then I just get the beachball until I have to Force Quit. I've tried doing this with twenty tracks and I have the same problem. Does anyone have any ideas what might be going wrong ?
    Thanks,
    Ben

    Command (Apple) key A.
Or select the first one then Shift click the last one.

  • Minor Problem - Messed up Play Counts

    Hi guys,
Only a minor problem here, but i want to know why my Play Count keeps taking massive jumps forward? (P.S - This only seems to happen when I restart iTunes...)
For example, I've "listened" to a song about 1,600 times in a week (after I downloaded it), which is inhumane since I use the computer (and my iPod) for about 2 hours a day max.
I really would like a reliable and accurate play count so all the songs on the Top25 are my proper favourites :P
    Cheers guys!

Since 9.0.1 my play count doesn't even go to the right song! I swear Apple must have done cost-cutting in their beta-testing (None is done!)

  • Songs stop playing on my iphone I try to start it again and it will not play for more than 2-4 seconds, does anyone have the solution to this problem?

I have Imatch and songs stop playing on my iphone I try to start it again and it will not play for more than 2-4 seconds, does anyone have the solution to this problem?

By "hard reset" you mean hold down the Home and power buttons until the iOS device restarts, correct?

  • Multiple problems with itouch (including apps, album artwork and play count

ok I just got a 32 gb itouch...
And so far it's been nice. But recently three problems are occuring:
1 normally, when you're in music and you put the iPod horizontally, you should see the album artwork. However, for me, most of the album artwork is simply black. Also, sometimes, when the album is selected during this process it is black while when it is in the list in the backround, you can see it. So there are general problems with that.
2 sometimes my apps don't work, while sometimes they do. It's not just one app, it happens to all my bought apps (not to the ones that were there when I goi the iPod, however)
3 everytime I connect to my computer, I loose all my play count. I have this situation so far: I played about 8 song from my iPod while it was connected to my pc. After that I put a top 25 smartlist. Later that day I listened to a nother album. In the evening I checked the smartlist, and on it were songs that I never played. Also I looked at my music under devices, and I put in order from most played to least, and on top were the song that I listened to while I had my iPod connect to the computer, and no the album I listened to later.
Please help me. I love listening to my iPods, and I just got this cool iPod, so please help me before I get a negative attitude towards the itouch.
    Many thanks for you comprehention,
    Michas

Well what your describing is a reboot of the iPod, not a real restore.
Here's the break down, just so you know.
    1. Reboot, Hold down the power button and Home button, till the white apple appears, no data loss, just reboots the IPT.
    2. In the IPTs general settings, at the bottom is a reset button, which allows you to reset some or all of the settings on the IPT.
    3. A restore is done in iTunes and wipes the entire IPT of contents and restores the IPT to factory settings.

  • Ipod play count is incorrect - solution?

    Hey everyone,
I've been noticing EXTREMELY high play counts for my songs and it has to do with ipod syncs. Every time I plug in my ipod it adds all my computer library play counts to the ipod play counts and it doesn't just add the new ones that occured since my last sync, but all computer play counts EVER! so it double, triple, quadruple counts the computer play counts b/c of each sync.
Does anyone know if there is a way to fix this so it stops messing up the play count? Or does anyone know how to stop it from syncing computer and ipod plays in general?
    thanks! =D

I have the same issue with my touch and it's really annoying. What I've noticed is that the play count is added to itself and then incremented. For instance I just played a song that had a play count of 7 once and then it became 15. The songs I've listened to twice will have a play count of 3, songs that Iv'e listened to 3 times will become 7 and so on.

  • Sync play count, last played, and rating with iOS 5

From other threads (https://discussions.apple.com/message/16563011#16563011 and https://discussions.apple.com/message/16505730#16505730 for example) it is clear that there are some problems with play count, last played, and rating information updating and syncing under iOS 5. I have at least a partial solution. I am posting it here instead of under one of the existing threads because 1) some discussions seem to be confusing the difference between updating the iOS 5 device data and syncing the updated data to the computer, and 2) some of the discussions are focused iPhone, and though the problem appears similar I only have an iPod touch to test the solution on.
First of all, this is not a new problem. Prior to iOS 5, I would plug my iPod Touch into the computer and not see any play count or last played data for songs I knew I had just listened to. I discovered that if I clicked (in my computer's iTunes display of the iPod) on one song that I had recently listened to, it would suddenly display play count and last played for all the songs played since the last update. I could then transfer this playlist data (more on this in a minute) to the corresponding songs on the computer. Under iOS 5, this no longer works, and in fact causes the new play count and last played data on the iPod to be lost. However, under iOS 5 there is a way to get this information to update, even though you don't see it when you first connect to the computer.
To make this work, you have your iPod set on Manually manage music and videos under the Summary tab of the iPod settings in iTunes. I have messed around with this for hours, including several restores and resets of my iPod touch, and have found no way to get this to work under various Sync Music options. I have been using the Manually manage mode for years because I use my iPod with numerous different iTunes Libraries on several different external hard drives.
Here's the trick: Manually manage must be in effect before you connect the iPod to the computer. After your iPod shows up in the iTunes interface on your computer, in the main view (where it shows the different tabs at the top and capacity at the bottom) there is a Sync button at the very bottom right. Click on this and wait for it to go through the Sync steps (don't worry, you're not losing anything), and, voila, when you go to the songs (on the iPod) you have listened to since the last time you connected to the computer, the play count and last played data will be there.
Unfortunately, it's not a simple matter to get this data synced to the computer, but it can be done. At first I thought that once I got the data to show up on the iPod I could go to the Music tab and Sync Music to get the playlist data to the computer, but this does not work. It will sync the play count and last played data that are on the computer to the iPod, overriding the newer data. The way I have been getting my playlist data from my iPod to my computer without ever changing the Manually manage setting is by using the Copy Tag Info Tracks To Tracks script from Doug's AppleScripts for iTunes <http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=copytinforackstotracks>. This isn't hard to download or install or use and copies playlist information very quickly.
I have never had a problem with play count or last played on my 2nd generation nano, which still works beautifully. As far as I can tell, play count and last played have never worked well on the iPod touch; there are threads in discussions complaining about this from years ago. It would be nice if Apple would recognize that these are extremely important features to many users and make it a priority to make these basics work before (or while) adding a lot of other fancy features.

Just for posterity in case anyone else ever has a similar problem.
I found out I can work around my problem, but I have limitations. The only time it'll update the correct songs is after I restore it and then add the initial songs on to the Shuffle. The key is to not ever have a situation where I reshuffle the order of those songs. If I ever shuffle to better alphebatize or categorize things, the sync updating screws everything up. If say Song #3 on my Shuffle's playlist after the intitial transfer gets moved around to being anything other than the third song played, my Shuffle/iTunes will still think that song has been played although the Song #3 I actually listened to after the sync update will be different. Now I have to carefully compose and place what songs I want loaded on since I can't mess around with the playlist setup at all.
I know Apple support would likely blame my Shuffle for the problem (it's over 6 years old now). But it's funny how this only happened right after I installed 11.0. The update to 11.0.2 did nothing.

  • Play count wrong after trying to home share

Hello.  I recently turned on home sharing to share music with my wife's computer in the home.  After turning on home sharing, I found my play count was all different.  The numbers were off.  I have since turned off home sharing.  Is there a way now to get my old music play count or library back?
If I can't revert back, is there a suggestion as to how I might manually fix the play count back to what it was?

I'm having a similar issue, which has only occurred very recently. When I plug my phone in to sync/back-up, some song plays will be randomly and significantly increased though, bizarrely, not all songs are doing this.
Having had a browse around the internet for a solution, it seems the issue is likely caused by the latest version of iOS (v8.0.2). Really irritating bug, I have to say, for those of us who like to keep accurate listening stats.
I hope iOS 8.0.3 will be out very soon and hopefully address this issue, as neither a system restore on my phone nor reinstalling iTunes has had any effect on this problem.

  • Front Row & Video Podcast Play Count

I have one of the new Core Duo 20" iMacs. I've found that Front Row does something unexepected. When I watch a video podcast through Front Row, and I mean watch it to the end of the file, the play count in iTunes is not updated. I've checked, and the count is updated for music files and audio podcasts. This only seems to happen with video podcasts. Any else having this problem? Solutions?
I suspect it's happening because audio is probably played through iTunes, whereas the video is Quicktime.
    Thanks in advance,
    J

I don't haven't used Front Row to play movies or video - but the problem you are describing has been happening in both Quicktime and iTunes on my Mac, ever since I installed Leopard. There are a few things I've tried that work to get the video and audio back in sync - one is to pause the video, and to leave it paused for 5 or 10 minutes. When I come back and restart it, sometimes it will play normally. The other thing that I've tried is to actually shut down iTunes and restart it - for some reason that works a bit more consistently.
Another problem I have is less dire - and that is occasionally a video or movie will lose its audio altogether - when that happens the "fix" is to stop the video for a few seconds, then restart it. It usually works. Again, the operative word is usually. Unfortunately I haven't found a way to stop this from happening at all - which is what I'd prefer, but these fixes (and sometimes a combination of them) will get me through a movie. I'd love some guidance from the home office on this though! Anyone at Apple care to take a bite?
