Solution to avoid mobile roaming costs

Hi,
Is there any solution/product that allows to reduce or eliminate the cost of a call from a mobile device in travel outside its country?
Is it possible to get this with Cisco Unified Mobile?
I know you can eliminate the roaming cost if the mobile is on its country and makes an international call. But, what happens if the mobile is in another country?

Just a thought, but what about a sip client on a smartphone using either wifi or a cheap sim card for data?  Newer android devices (can't speak for the iphones) have a native sip client anyways.  You'll probably see some latency related voice quality issues, but that's essentially free + the cost of the sim card assuming your device has a sim card.  I guess the missing relevant factors are how much time talk time is expected, level of acceptable voice quality, and type of mobile device.

    Thank you for you help in advance

    If you buy an iPhone at the UK or Canadian Apple stores, it should work on the GSM frequencies in both countries. LTE will not work as the LTE channels are different in each country and each iPhone sold in each country is only compatible on LTE channels of that particular country. Other wise it should be fine.
    Be aware that only the Apple store (retail or online) sells the unlocked iPhone in the UK. I think the situation is similar in Canada. (It is in the US).

  • N95 mobile internet cost 4,000 pounds!!! is that f...

    Hi,
    I was shuck that when I saw the bill 4,000 pounds because data transfer is high. N95 allows me go over 2000MB on the N95 but I don't think I used it.
    I only have this phone for 3 weeks and started to use internet for 2 weeks. I have gone through the web stuff and know N95 might be faulty. I sent it to be checked but I am very worried about because Vodafone is going to collect this debt.
    How did you expereience N95 is faulty and how did Nokia response to that? Phone4U says if the phone is not faulty I have to pay that amount but I did not use that at least I did not connect so many times.
    Please help me.

    The data transfer costs by network operators very greately.
    Some have a fixed, flat data rate.
    Some have a fixed, flat daya rate up to a certain limit, after which you pay by the amount of data transferred.
    Some have a mix of fixed vs. by-the-amount rates depending on which access point settings you use (e.g., WAP could be fixed, but "regular" Internet by-the-amount, and a "streaming" access point for video and audio playback could be yet another, different rate).
    Some have a fixed rate only to their own services, but by-the-amount for accessing other service provider's sites.
    Some have entirely different contracts/agreements/plans with different SIM cards for them.
    Some have different rates for pre-paid plans vs. post-paid.
    Some publish the information in a clear and understandable fashion, others make it very hard to figure out what the costs are or can be.
    Roaming costs (when you are connected to some other, foreign operators network) are usually very high, and unpredictable. (The EU has started to regulate this at least within the EU.)
    And note also that for MMS (Multimedia messages), you also pay for the data transfer, unless the operator has a flat-fee for the MMS access point.
    On the phone, the Log application (under "Packet data") will keep track of the data usage amounts (for as long as the "Log duration" setting says, or if you don't reset/reformat the device). Sum up in the Log application both "All sent data" as well as "All received data", and ask your network operator what that amount really should cost. In the second tab/view to the right, you can also see them individually (by access point); hit "Options" and choose "Filter"if you want to see just the packet data connections and not the phone calls and SMS messages.

  • Receiving e-mail on Blackberry while in China - is there an additional roaming cost?

    I have the unlimited data plan for my Blackberry and am travelling in China.  I thought that receiving e-mail would cost me $20/MB since I'm roaming, but a friend here believes that I can always receive e-mail on my Blackberry for no additional roaming cost.  Is this true, or will I get charged $20/MB to receive e-mail?
    Thanks.

    Actually, you are both wrong.  You will need to change your data plan to the Global Blackberry plan for $64.99 per month and you will be able to get your emails while in China.

  • Roaming cost

    we are about to switch from 70 blackberry to new iphones... we are very concern about international roaming cost with the new iphones.
    what are my options to reduce international roaming cost on my enterprise iphones?
    is thery ways to limit data roaming to only email and calandar? is there centralized server to data roaming manage priviledges?
    I am wandering how other organisation are managing the transition?

    yes... thats an option... but free hotspots are not so often to find... and I can use a laptop there as well... and do you know, if email/safari works when I turned of the roaming function? I am not sure about this point.

    Yes, unless you are connected to free Wi-Fi.

  • How to avoid international roaming iphone

    Hey everyone,
    So I travelled to Colombia recently and in general, had my phone either turned off, or on airplane mode the entire trip. I only used it for one five minute phone call and to listen to music for about five hours accumulated. I was there for about 8 days.
    I was told to put the phone on airplane mode, so as to avoid any roaming charges, as my fellow travel companions (who all also owned iPhones), said "that way nothing comes through. No wi-fi, messages, nothing".
    So, yes, went with that advice.
    Get home, BAM! $255 phone bill.
    Now, I was obviously expecting a larger bill than normal, but I have all together $130 in roaming charges. How the eff did this happen?
    Excuse me if I'm just a dummy, but I have never owned an iPhone before and this was my first time outside of North America.
    I am going to Uruguay next week and obviously, don't want the same to happen.
    Any advice on how to avoid this again?
    Thanks in advance everyone!

    That's not surprising. AT&T's roaming charges are $2.89 per minute, and data is $19.95 per megabyte. Text messages are $0.50 each. If you turned on the cellular without turning off cellular data, then data could have been exchanged while you were using the phone to make a call. It should be itemized on your phone bill to see where the money went. They charge a flat fee for international roaming too.
    You don't need to use "airplane mode" however, to prevent the charges. "Airplane mode" disables the radios in the phone from operating entirely. However, you only get charged to for using cellular voice and data. You'll not be charged for using WiFi (at a cafe or hotel, for instance).
    The phone's settings section gives you some control over this. See Settings > General > Network and note the "Cellular Data" and "Data Roaming" options. Those should be set to "Off" when you travel. If these aren't off, whenever you are out of "Airplane mode" the phone will receive notifications, look for e-mail, or whatever else you have configured that uses data semi-automatically. Because it's SO expensive (3333% what AT&T charges for domestic data), you don't want ANY data charges.
    You can safely leave the cellular service turned on as you are only charged for connected calls and text messages. They are cheaper and can be avoided by not answering the phone.

    Hi Klevis
    Are you planning on paying full price for the phone?
    If so then getting it directly from Apple would be a better option - since the Apple store has unlocked phones now
    If you buy a T-Mo phone then you are bound by their unlock policy

  • Temporarily solution for ATI Mobility HD 3470 driver

    Hi guys,
    I have found a temporarily solution for installing ATI Mobility HD 3470 driver, as shown following:
    1) Disable Intel X4500 in BIOS;
    2) Download a software named as driver genius and install it;
     The software can be download at:
    http://drivers.mydrivers.com/downloa...XP-2003-Vista/
    or
    http://count.mydrivers.com/download....us_v2008b5.zip
    3) Run driver genius and select the item of driver update (the first button on software interface). In the software, this item is shown as "驱动更新" due to it is a Chinese version;
    4) Select your display adapters from the hardware list shown soon;
    5) Click the green button on the lower right corner to start updating and installing the driver automatically. The button is shown as "开始更新" in the software;
    6) Reboot the laptop after the driver installing completed;
    7) The ATI 3470 display adpater will be shown in device manager as "ATI mobility  readon HD 3400 series" if the install is successful. After the operation the VISTA score can be update to be 4.7, while a score of 3.8 can be got for Intel X4500 display adapter.
     When installing X4500 display adapter, the ATI 3470 adapter should be disabled in BIOS. Then you can update the driver for X4500 adapter following similar procedure for ATI driver installing.
     Hope this can be helpful for you guys!! Wish you luck!!

    Hi Experts

    authentication is 802.1x
    Site B got

    Site C got
    25 AP
    WLC 5508
    authentication is 802.1x
    All sites are Interconnected and can be authenticated across the WAN
    On Site A I got SSID for users "Wireless_GD" with authentication type 802.1x
    We got lot of Roaming users between these sites.  Just having the same SSID name & same authentication type would solve the mobility feature or do I need additional config
    kindly input
    thanks

    Site "C" child domain : C.xyz.com
    Domain controller Win 2008 R2
    On the GUI Interface for WLC
    Controller > General
    there is option
    Default Mobility Domain Name :
    RF Group Name :
    what is the right setup of these settings
    My understanding is
    :: Default mobility Domain Name :: should be unique on all sites
    :: RF Group Name ::  should be different based on Site Name

  • Solution for tricky alloaction of costs wanted

    What would be the suggested solution in this case were we which to break down a cost for reporting purposes.
    we're posting to one G/L account from an external program - cost-center, wbs and internal order cannot be used
    basically - what I would like to do is to allocate all costs from cost element X to secondary cost elements Y,Z and W depending on information in source document (assignment field for example)
    is this possible?
    Cheers,
    Peter

    Hi,
    When you have the information in your posting you can create a program that makes internal posting in CO (KB11N - Enter )

  • Mobile in Costa Rica

    We are planning to spend several months each year in Costa Rica.  We have gotten a local US Skype number, so calls to that number will not be toll calls for people who want to reach us.  My question is about subscriptions for using the call forwarding feature to forward those calls to our Costa Rican phone.
    Our Costa Rican phone is a mobile phone, not a land line.  It appears that I can only get unlimted minutes subscriptions for Latin America to land lines and that for forwarding calls to a mobile I need to buy a fixed number of minutes/month and then pay the overage at a higher per minute charge through Skype credit.  Is my reading correct, that unlimited calls to Costa Rican mobile #s from a US number is not currently offered?  If I am correct, may I ask why that is?  And, more important to me than why is -- are there any prospects in the near term for a change in this situation.
    Thanks in advance.

    Ask your carrier to be sure that they support SMS and it is implement on your account with them.

    I just checked my BIOS and my current setting is set at IDE although it also mentions that the default should be AHCI. Currently I have a dual boot of Windows 7 (need it for Tax software) and Arch
    So I guess, when I get the new HDD, I will first set it to AHCI and then install the OSes on it. See if NCQ helps any, and if not I will turn it back and re-install (if I have to). I am planning to have Windows only in virtualbox in the new drive.
    Anyhoo, while I was in the BIOS I found two things which I had questions about :
    1) Under Onboard Devices --> Integrated NIC , my setting is currently set at "On w/PXE" and it says the default should be just "On". Would it be ok to change it back to On since its a single machine and its not booting an OS on any server. I just don't want to have to re-install anything now since I will be doing that in the new HDD.
    2) How would I know whether my BIOS would support a 64 bit OS in Virtualbox? I checked some setting under Virtualization, but they weren't very clear.
    I will edit this post and let you know exactly what settings were present under the Virtualization sub-section.
