Solution to Iphone 5 battery drain iOS 6.02

Like many people I just bought a new Iphone 5 and noticed that the power drains very quickly compared to my previous Iphone 3GS, 4 and 4S. I tried many of the suggestions online such as turning off wireless, brightness, deleting this and that. I even tried to downgrade to ios 6.0.1 which failed as an error message showed up.
Then I came across a youtube that solve it, the link is at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BkfU-OvQVp8
Warning: Before you do anthing, read the backup/restore info in the end of this message
Solution
Basically what you need to do is
to go Settings->General->Reset->Erase all content and settings
Activate the phone as a NEW phone
Plug into itune and setup as a NEW phone
That's it!
Results
From that point on, my iphone 5 battery went back to normal. I turned on all my wireless, bluetooth, email push notifications, ie turn on all the smartphone functions as it should be. My 3G speed even improved tremendously from 500ms ping/1Mbps down/0.06 Mbps up to 99ms/9.51Mbps/0.34Mbps at the same location when I tested using speedtest.net app (several tests done. My data plan is still on 3G so I did not turn on the 4G or LTE functions of the iphone 5.
Backup/restore
Because you are setting up the phone as NEW, you cannot restore any data from itune. What you can do is to backup to icloud BEFORE carrying out the solution. This will backup your contacts/pictures/etc. These will then be downloaded back into the iphone from icloud after the phone is setup as new.
However, some Apps such as WhatsApp, Apps that have data that are not icloud supported will need to be backup and restore using other methods. This depends on the Apps.
Hence BE WARN, do your own backup and find your own restore methods because for this to work, you cannot use itune restore from backup function.
Does it work for you?
I hope this works for those Iphone users who is restoring their previous 3/3GS/4/4S backups from ituen into their new Iphone 5. I don't know if it works for totally new user of a new Iphone 5.
If this works for you, leave a comment here so that it will help others.

This is a follow-up.  I called Apple Support.  They had me go through a sequence of unplugging the phone from the computer, then rebooting the computer, unplugging and shutting down the phone, plugging in the phone while holding the Hold button to force a  restore.  It then finished the update and all is well.  I wouldn't suggest trying this without having Support on the phone.

  • Iphone battery draining fast after reboot

hi, my iphone battery drains completely from 100% to 0% in a few hours if I switch the phone off and turn back on. i recently found this out once after I switched off the phone.....But there is no problem (battery can last 1~2 days for normal use)if i do NOT switch off after recharge.
Is this a software issue or hardware?? Has anyone got the same problem? Thank you so much.

A couple more diagnostic tidbits.....my iPhone exhibited odd behavior after downloading the Star Gazer app from the App Store on Sunday. I activated the "arrange icon" feature to move the app icon for Star Gazer to a new position on my iPhone and after I moved it the icon for the app next to it (Weather Channel App) was absent but the label was present. When I slid my app screen back to the home screen and came back, the Weather Channel App icon was visible and the Star Gazer app was now absent but the label was present. I've also had some odd flashes of the home screen after unlocking my phone (I have it secured with a PIN to protect my data). Is this and IOS 4.1 issue?
It is not an iOS 4 issue; it is a very rare problem, and has occurred with all versions. But if you search you will see reports are in the dozens, with 100 million phones in use that's a vanishingly small number. It usually means that memory in the phone is corrupted. If rebooting the phone doesn't fix it you should restore the phone using iTunes.

I started to do a backup on my iphone 5s following a notice the device gave. but it was unsuccessful and in the first use of my iphone I saw my iphone battery drains drastically. I had upgraded the software to ios 7.1. what should i do now? is this a problem with the battery?

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.

  • After os5 upgrade the iPhone battery drains in 1 hr

after os5 upgrade the iPhone battery drains in 1 hr? Gets very hot also

And I should mention that I took the foll steps so far:
    1. Let the battery drain out completely and charge it overnight
    2. Backed the phone, then reset the phone and restored from backup.
    3. Took it to the apple store and they did a different kind of restore but no luck
The only thing left for me to try to is to reset it to factory setting unless some one can suggest some other way.

  • Iphone 6 fast battery drain IOS 8.1.2 even on standby

I have a new iphone 6 64Gb setup as a new phone, already with IOS 8.1.2 installed.  I have experienced really fast battery drain all the time.
I have tried with location services disabled,
    push disabled,
    background app refresh disabled
    siri off
    Icloud Keychain off
Itunes & App store updates OFF, Use cellular data OFF
and is still draining battery very fast.  My previous iphone 5 could get from 6.30am to 7pm on one charge, this iphone 6 is on 30% by 3pm.  The main apps I use are Mailbox, safari, waze , tunein and phone and ALL of these apps show as the main "battery usage" items.  Basically having any app open with the screen on causes the battery % to drop before your eyes.  I have also experienced battery drain on standby overnight.  The drain is so fast that using waze for a 45 minute journey causes 30% drop
Basically it is unusable as a smart phone without having a charger connected all the time.  Please can someone help?
    thanks
    Dave

I had this same problem.  Phone draining brand new, extremely fast.  Usage and standby times in the battery usage meter have been nearly identical after 4 or 5 hours off the charger.
Went to Genius Bar two weeks ago, they noticed the battery drain in their test but said that nothing else looked unusual (battery fine, no major software issues, etc) and sent me on my way.
The problem continued, last weekend, did a full reset of the phone and set up as a new phone.  Logged in using my AppleID at the setup and made sure to use the @icloud email address.  I had previously used my first AppleID--a gmail account--from many years ago.  The accounts were linked (gmail ID, linked to @icloud, @me, @mac address from later setups).
My problem was solved--went two days without charging, battery life was amazing, until today, when after the phone was acting odd, powered off then turned back on--battery drain began immediately and usage and standby levels are the same.  I left the phone untouched for the last hour and "usage" went up and hour, as did stand-by.
For reference--no push email, fetch at 30 minutes, minimal location services on, background app refresh off, automatic update off, parallax off, etc. I have done every "trick" possible to improve battery life (some that make the phone useless).
iCloud seems to be the problem--can't figure out what part of iCloud is the culprit though.
Have another GB appointment tomorrow.  Hopefully will get a more thorough diagnosis of the problem.  Hopefully report back a solution.

    Tormented by Battery Life
    IOS 8.1.2 upgrade caused it
iPhone 6 64GB Grey battery constantly drains now, from full charge at 7 am it will die around 2 pm with minimum or no use.
It even drains while on standby, no serious culprits the phone was setup as new and all apps are upto date downloads form app store
The phone and apps worked fine before it,
Post update did the following so far
    Soft Reset
Hard Reset with Restore all backup from cloud
Hard Reset with Restore all backup from pc
Restore again from pc with and without the restore backup
currently using a new setup with data synced once with icloud login
I have following tweaks already from various battery performance tweaks
Location Services to minimum (Google maps), no system services enabled
    Background app refresh disabled
Reduce Motion is on (parallax effect disabled)
    Notifications to minimum
Auto Brightness off and brightness is 25-30% from manual selection
Wifi and Bluetooth is usually off
Carrier Phone signal is usually ok but shows low signal in small percentages across email, phone but not too much its like 5%, 6% variants
    iCloud is off
    Autoupdate of apps is off
mail is on manual sync every 30 mins (4 accounts)
Can't see any obvious app which will cause this
Generally the drain increases if I use a heavy app like Google Navigation, or Marvel Content of Champions, gets hot too when using a heavy data app and battery can run flat in plain 1 hour of use
The full charge of the phone also takes longer and then discharges (with some emails (not on auto fetch), small use of whats app and 1 phone call) within 4-5 hours with tweaks 1-11 in place
Can anyone help, I have booked an appointment with genius but what if they say its just software even though I tried everything
    Any genuine issue here?
Please don't redirect me to tweaks etc I have almost tried every blog out there on tweaks on battery and almost tried all combos

    Addendum
Last night charging for around 3-4 hours only charged a dead phone by 55% then left it to charge overnight
Today the battery dropped from 6:15 am full charge to 53% at 10:38 am at time of writing this with
1 phone call out for 30 secs
    1 incoming missed call,
    Whatsapp fetched around 10 msgs
Email fetched around 20 ermail from 4 accounts but not viewed yet on phone

  • IPhone Battery Drain, 7.1.2, I Have A FIX!

Hello everyone!  My name is Gabriel Chen and my iPhone has been having trouble with battery draining, and overheating.  I'm here to tell you how to fix it.  This is completely different from the rest of the posts because I've discovered something interesting and new.
Background (I'm a little long-winded, sorry. Just skip down to "What-to-Do" if you are pretty sure you've had the same problems as me):
I got my iPhone 5s when it first came out.  It's battery life was amazing, then the fire nation attacked.  Jokes aside, the battery became worthless about a month ago after I updated to 7.1.2.  I thought the issue was 7.1.2, but now that I fixed it, I don't think it is.  I took my phone into the apple store about a week ago because I was off to college and needed to fix this problem before I left.  They ran diagnostics and found kbd and backboard errors.  They immediately replaced it. I was happy because I had a brand new phone, but the battery issues came back, and this time even worse.  My phone was burning up, even hotter and it even froze sometimes.  I then took it to a store near my college–which was difficult because I have no car here–where they did a reset because that's what they always do.  I sat there and played with the phone to make sure the problem wasn't there.  Turns out it was still there.  I love apple genius bar employees, but not all of them are very knowledgeable about the products and how they work.  I don't blame them because: updates can always cause new problems, it's probably above their pay-grade to memorize what every single error code means, and they don't necessarily have knowledge that lets them troubleshoot any problems that involve hidden processes that their apple-issued easy-button diagnostic test doesn't tell them about.
I then approached another employee who helped me immensely.  He knew something was wrong, which was awesome because most employees do tend to blow you off, so he decided he'd try to help me fix it.  He had a lot more knowledge about the phone.  This time he found kbd errors again so he replaced it.  After that process, he disappeared into the back of the employee's only part of the store.  I tried playing around with the phone, and it was clear that the problem persisted.  I then went and got help again.  This time, the new person who was helping me went to the back, and I waited around for about an hour and a half not knowing what was going on.  The whole time, I was wondering where the first guy who helped me disappeared to.  For the sake of convenience, the first person who helped me in this paragraph will be Ian, and the second will be Will.  Will eventually came back out, this time bringing Ian along with him.  Turns out Ian had been doing research for me in the back for the last 1.5 hours and found that the problem probably had to do with iCloud.  My phone was draining and overheating due to its attempt to download some sort of data with no success.  So each time it failed, it would retry over and over again.  This explains the overheating and battery drainage.  We deleted some stuff from iCloud and it got a lot better.
The next day though, the problem came back.  I was so frustrated so I've been trouble shooting for the past 5 hours.  Eventually, after 4 hours, I tried using different iTunes accounts.  There was no battery drain when I used these.  When I used my original account, there were still problems.  So I tried turning off iCloud on my account.  Still, I had no luck with it.  I eventually tried something else which finally fixed it! My phone now no longer has problems with battery drain and overheating.
    What-to-Do
    1. Go to Settings —> iCloud —> Delete Account
Don’t worry, as long as you click “keep the stuff” or whatever it says, you won’t lose stuff
    2. See if your batter still drains by leaving it on and watching the battery.  Touch it and see if it’s heating up.  If your battery is draining 1% every 2 minutes, it definitely is still having problems.  It’s your own choice, but even if it does drain, I would follow the next step anyways.  If it doesn’t drain, the issue definitely had to do with iCloud.  Now, log in once again.
    3. Make sure all of the iCloud data that you care about is stored some where other than iCloud.  For example, make sure your Pages files are on your computer.
    4. Go to Settings —> iCloud —> Storage & Backup —> Manage Storage.  Then delete the stuff under Documents and Data.  I REPEAT, DO NOT DELETE WITHOUT FIRST MAKING SURE THE DATA IS ON YOUR COMPUTER IN SOME SHAPE OR FORM
Why?  What is probably happening is that there is probably data that is trying to get onto your phone.  This data is failing to do so which is causing an infinite loop of effort and failure which drains your battery and makes your phone work really hard.  Apple should code a fail-safe into this to stop the loop, but they haven’t yet.
    5. You’re done with this part!  For some of you, like me, your phone will stop draining.  If so, you’re done!  For some of you, it will start draining again!  Here’s the part that took me 5 hours to figure out, mostly because I was just frustrated and venting.
    6. If you’re still draining, go to Settings —> iTunes and App Store, and turn off SHOW ALL Music and Videos.  What this feature does is it will display the purchased items that have not been downloaded, but are on your iTunes account, specifically Music and Videos, within the the corresponding apps.  I understand that you probably like this feature and that you’re probably unhappy that I’m telling you to turn it off.  This is a glitch or bug that Apple will probably come to fix if it comes to their attention eventually, so don’t worry.  When they do fix it, you can turn these back on.
Why? For some reason, the battery drain was being caused either: by the phone failing to fetch data from your iTunes account, pertaining to purchased items such as songs and videos; or by the phone repeatedly fetching the data, instead of just holding it in place.
So, this fixed my phone completely.  Please rate me up if that’s even possible.  If you’re an Apple dude, I’d love to receive rewards if this was actually useful to you guys (haha, sorry I’m just a little proud of my accomplishment.)  If it doesn’t work, try to trouble shoot and figure it out.  If you would like clarification, feel free to comment or whatever it’s called. If this doesn't fix it, maybe try getting it replaced in an apple store because that might be the issue.

Thought it had worked but soon found out it had not.
after further days of trying finally, solved it for me Yesterday.
turned off notifications when locked, and bingo, wow.
i have not turned off iCloud but location services are also off.
best thing to do I found was keep checking your usage, settings, general, usage, and flip down to bottom, if the standby and usage are similar there is a problem, if there is a big difference then all is ok. Just keep turning things off and on until the difference is very apparent.
something on my phone was keeping the phone alive even when turned off, and I think this was the phone repeatedly trying to update continually.
to me this is definitely down to the iOS, my wife has exactly same phone and iOS but hers doesn't have any problem and the battery lasts for days.
the guy at the Genius Bar told me to restore the phone via iTunes, not iCloud. This is because iCloud remembers the exact info from your phone and simply reinstates it when you restore, and this includes the iOS too.
when I get home from holidays that's what I'll do, or wait for iOS 8 in few weeks. But I'm so pleased I finally made it work, I was beginning to think ditch the phone and buy Samsung.
anyway anyone out there please try my final solution and let me know if it works for you?

  • IPhone battery drain

I recently purchased an iPhone 4s when it was running iOS 5.1.1. I eagerly updated to iOS 6 as soon as it was available. I had been seeing slightly less-than-optimal battery life of 5.1.1, but iOS 6 delivered simply terrible battery life. I have scoured through many forums and found nothing that worked. I have even tried restoring as a new phone, but with no results. Before I go ahead and make a Genius Bar appointment, is there anything I can do to fix this? I have reset all settings, turned off bluetooth, turned off push mail and notifications and location for unnecessary things, including system services, disabled Siri, turned down brighness, gone through charge cycles, done hard reboots, and removed unnecessary syncing services. Yet my battery still fails to deliver. Can anyone recommend anything else to try?
As a reference, I get about 5-6 hours of light usage (checking email, checking news briefly, maybe watching a few YouTube videos) with 10-12 hours of standby on a good day. There have been days where I got up to 8 hours on very restricted usage. On bad days, when I throw in 15-20 minutes of games and more heavy video, I get 4 hours of usage maximum. I got far more than this on my iPod Touch 4G running iOS 5.1.1, so I was rather startled by this performance. If this is normal, and the iPhone battery in general isn't too good, please let me know. However, I have a strong feeling that this is unusual. If no solution presents itself, I will be going to see the Genius Bar.

I don't really have an answer as such but I suffered from poor battery life after upgrading to ios6. After resetting and restoring a few times it started to last longer.
However, if you thought the battery drain was bad on 6, wait till you get 6.1!  I took my phone off charge at 6:30 this morning, recharged it at midday and now, at 23:10, it's showing 17%. This is with light web surfing, a doze or so incoming emails and 2 words with friends games going on
Pretty poor, but par for the course. Every time an iOS update comes out it kills battery life.
My Daughters is the same. It must effect everybody

  • IPhone battery drain and crash at 50%

My iPhone 4, since updating to the most recent software, had started crashing when it gets down to 50% and 50% on the dot everytime. Now it seems to crash whenever it feels like it but never will it get below 50%. The only way the phone turns back on is when it is connected to a power source once again. I don't even get the dead battery signal when trying to re-boot or anything. Now it would sound like the issue is my battery but I booted up my 3GS with the latest update and same exact thing happens which leads me to believe it's Apple and their ever-so-terrible software.(have they ever released software that left phones in perfect working condition??NO) So maybe its my back-up right? I restored and set up as a new iPhone, same problems. The battery drains from 100%-90% @ regular speed and from 90%-70% the thing reeeallllyyy starts moving quick and from 70%-50% it's just a guess as to when it will die in that region. The issue is such a deal that it's basically renderring my phone useless. If I wanted to leave a phone plugged into my wall I would still have a house phone. The Idiot bar employees told me that the software showed no glitches but that was only dated back to my last restore which was just hours before entering the store. The idiot bar employee also told me that the battery drain issue was "not a known issue" for iOS5. ARE YOU KIDDING ME!? It's all over the internet! So far in my searching I have found few people with my crashing at 50% problem but I have found NO solution. Ya got any ideas?

I do have apple care that I mistakenly didn't register right when I got it. Now I can't find the receipt for my phone and I'm having issues getting it back under warranty. I'm planning on taking care of that and heading back into apple but I'm sure they'll tell me it's my issue.

  • IPhone battery drains incredibly quickly. PLEASE HELP.

My iPhone 4s literally drained the battery from 100% to 1% in less than 5 minutes while it was charging. I turned it off to charge it at least until I could turn it back on, but it has 24 hours since I turned it off and it still won't even turn on. Is there any way I can fix this or do I just assume it is lost?

  • New iPhone battery drained by preinstalled Flashlight

The Apple store installed a new battery on my iPhone 5S last week. That did not fix my four to five hour battery life problem. I have followed every article out there on turning off location services, getting rid of Facebook app, etc.
But I found today when I checked "Battery Usage" under Settings: General: Usage: Battery Usage that the culprit is "Flashlight."  It states that my iPhone was battery was used 36% of the day by the flashlight preinstalled app that is on the pull-up menu. It is not an app I installed and I don't know how to get rid of it.
FYI - this is not a problem FROM updating to iOS 8. I have updated, but this problem existed prior to the update.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks! Ashley.

  • Battery life issues on iphone 5 with ios 6.1.4

I had upgraded the OS on my iphone 5 to iOS 6.1.4 and now I am facing extraordinary battery drain. I left my phone at 35% battery life while going to sleep and when i wake up, after 8 hours, it has gone down to 8% and less. This was not the case before with the earlier version of iOS or my iphone 3gs. I have tried some tips and suggestions but I dont think those are really helping. Could someone please help me out as to what should be done in this case.
Hope Apple is listening and intend to do something. My phone is brand new and not even a month old.

No i do not have LTE network access at home.
My cellular reception is quite good at home as well as work.
Yes i am using an exchange account, gmail.
This is what i have tried..
turning off SIRI, auto adjust brightness, push messages, notifications, blah blah blah...
Seeems like deleting and adding the mail account once again helped, as i am experiencing a better battery life today. I had read about this somewhere but weired that this could be a solution to a battery drain issue.
But still I am planning to take the phone to a store to get its battery checked.

  • Iphone Battery Life on IOS 7.1

My battery life seems to have gone south since my upgrade to IOS 7.1. Does anyone know what I can do to stop the rapid drain? Can't even go a full day with avg use since the upgrade.

    Hello Fatboy1351,
I certainly understand the importance of having the longest battery life possible on the iPhone.  I recommend reviewing the following resource for some information about extending your battery life:
    Battery & power
Is your iPhone battery draining too quickly or not holding a charge? Try restarting it first. You can also adjust several settings to extend the battery life of your iPhone.
