Solution to missing MPEG2 Playback component FOUND!

This solution is for those that have purchased Final Cut Studio HD, and then found the MPEG2 playback component mysteriously missing.
Well, from digging and digging around I found my answer. Check for the existence of /System/Library/QuickTime/QuickTimeMPEG2.component by using command + F (find function). If you find this file, and it's not properly placed in the /System/Library/QuickTime/ folder....then there is the problem. Simply copy and paste that file into the directory mentioned above..
I give credit for the idea to Apple Forums user Dave Jablinsky. Thanks a million!

  • Apple QT MPEG2 Playback Component conflict w/Mavericks

I am running OX 10.9.1, Mavericks. and wnat to transfer my VOB files from DVD into iMovie for editing. Per the instructions in this discussion (https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3951 ), I installed MPEG StreamClip. I also purchased the Apple QT MPEG2 PB component - oops! - BC the Apple store says I actually don't need it if I'm running Lion or later. Per the Streamclip site (squared5.com) ,even though Apple says the QT PB tool is not needed, Streamclip still needs it. Fine, whatever. With Streamclip installed, I attempted to install the QT MPEG2 PB tool, but I got this error code: "QuickTime MPEG2 can't be installed on this disk. This software is intended for an earlier version of Mac OSX." For fun, I tried transferring my VOB files from DVD into streamclip, but that yielded another error that teh tranfer would not be complete, adn owuld be missing elements. That's true - the files I transfered to streamclip are now audi only.
So it appears that I need the Apple QT MPEG2 PB tool, but it's not available for Mavericks. Or am I missing something else? If streamclip won't work on MAvericks , is there an alternative QT MPEG2 PB component? Or, can you please show me another way to get my VOB files from DVD into iMovie?
Thank you very much, and I appreciate your time.
    Alison

I found this info frm samberl in australia (in this discussion thread https://discussions.apple.com/message/17333072#17333072), and it enabled me to install the QT MPEG2 playback component. Although all the instructions are directed toward Lion users, apparently it also applies to Mavericks.
"You need to delve deeper into MPEG Streamclip, Lion and Quicktime MPEG2 playback.
    From the MPEG Streaclip website.
"The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it.
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7."

  • Mpeg2 playback component for OS 10.3.9. or converting mod files

    Hi,
I want to convert mod video files so that I can work with them on the mac. Someone suggestes using mpeg streamclip (which I have, version 1.9.2) and mpeg2 playback component (I have version 6.0.2.)
Unfortunetly, when opening the mod file streamclip asks me to update my mpeg2 playback component. Here comes the problem:
The current Apple MPEG2 PlayBack component seems to be only available for OS Tiger (10.4.9. and higher). I am using OS 10.3.9. and QT Pro 7.1. and I would very much prefer to stay with this setting.
    1) Does anyone know where I could get an older version of the mpeg2 playback component?
    2) Or, is there an alternative way, instead of using the mpeg2 playback with quicktime to convert the videos into something iMovie (I have iM 4) or another programm can work with?
I found this website, would that be of any help? http://www.modconverterformac.net/
    3) Which other program (thirdparty) besides iMovie could I use to cut and view the videos on the mac? I have Final Cut Pro, but it is too complicated for me.
    Thank you very much,
    Janik

  • SOMEONE MUST KNOW about missing MPG2 Playback component!!!

OK! Just a few months ago, i was able to Mpegstreamclip to preview VOB and MPEG2 files... Now, the program says as some have experienced.... Mpeg2 playback component missing....
Mpeg2 playback component supposedly came w/ FCP studio... Now it's missing...
Is this intentional by apple to make us re-buy the component on their site or is this something else?
    Any information is greatly appreciated!!

  • QT7 and MPEG2 playback component - upgrade or purchase?

I upgraded to QT 7 but now I can't play back MPEG2. Is there an upgrade for the MPEG2 playback component or do I have to purchase a new copy?

If you moved up from version 6 then yes and you can get a free upgrade.
Log in at the Apple Store using the same account ID as your original purchase and click the downloadable software purchase link to see.

  • MPEG2 Playback Component gone

    Hi Folks-
I have posted this on the Quicktime forum, but thought there might
    be more help here.
I have extracted from a DVD using Mac the Ripper (legally-
it's for a client who shot the original footage himself, and
built a DVD out of it). I have then opened MPEG Streamclip
to convert to QT so it can be edited in FCP. However, somehow
I have lost MPEG2 Playback component from QT Pro 7.1.3
(did I lose this when I upgraded from 6?). Am trying to DL from Apple
website, but even as I log in, Apple keeps screwing up my address
info (says I'm in US, when I'm in Canada) and won't let me check out.
A call to Apple and I hear that possibly MPEG2 Playback component
is now not available in Canada (!#@$@#).
Anybody have any experience with this cross border availability issue? Anybody have any suggestions for another workaround?
Did I lose MPEG2 Playback Component just by upgrading to 7.1.3?
(I know other things get lost when upgrading from 6 Pro to 7 Pro, but since MPEG2 Playback Component is an add-on, it didn't occur
to me that it would be lost...
Also- further to the above, I cannot play any m2v files on my box...
    Thanks,
    Ted

Pretty sure everything from a Pro Key in 6 gets wiped out when going to 7, including add ons such as the MPEG Playback
What software are you running? Final Cut Studio? Playback component is included. Can you roll back your system? (Do you have a pre-QT 7 system back up?)
You can try backtracking your QT install, such as this one -

  • QT MPEG2 Playback component and SL/QTX

After upgrading to Snow Leopard, mpegstreamclip can no longer see my mpeg2 playback component, it still resides in my library/QT folder and can be used by QTPro7.
I'm guessin it has something to do with QTX being the default player, although I'm not entirely sure how I would make QT7 my default QT application (other than as the default application when opening media files). However I'd rather keep QTX as my default and be able to use QT7 whenever I choose to.
Can anyone offer any insight into how I might make sure that mpegstreamclip (and any other application for that matter that uses mpeg2 playback component) sees the mpeg2 playback component.

It may be that your component is out of date.
Log in at the Apple Store (using the same ID as in the original purchase) and click the "Downloadable software history" link.
Next to the MPEG-2 Playback Component is a download link.
    Try it.

  • No sound even with mpeg2 playback component

I purchase the quicktime mpeg2 playback component. Now I see the video, but without audio. How can it be that even paying 20 dollars I can´t see mpeg2 files fine?
    Any ideas?
    Thank you.

the strange thing is that mpeg streamclip doesn't play the sound neither. May be is a problem with the quicktime playback component?
Make sure it contains audio/what kind of audio by either looking at the "Audio PID" box under the Streamclip "Player" window or the "Show Stream Info" option under the file menu.

  • Does the QT MPEG2 Playback Component install & work with QT X ?

I am installing a new iMac with Snow Leopard.
Does the QT MPEG2 Playback Component install & work with QT X ?
(btw, I have already done the optional install of QT7 from the SN DVD).

Does the QT MPEG2 Playback Component install & work with QT X ?
I cannot get "muxed" MPEG2 content (e.g., VOB) file to load in QT X but both QT 7 Pro (with usual audio limitations) and MPEG Streamclip still function normally under Snow Leopard. (Since I don't normally use QT X, I had to actually run a quick test to see what would happen and haven't really performed any real tests. So take my comments with a grain of salt at this time.)

I've purchased and downloaded Quicktime MPEG2 playback component but I can not openend, the system says that Quicktime MPEG2.dmg is not recognized. Can anybody help me with this issue?.
What app are you using to try and mount the image file? The default should be the DiskImageMounter.app application. If it is still the default app, then it sounds like the image file, the mounter app, or your system is corrupted. If not, then make it the default app for the DMG file class.

  • MPEG2 Playback Component Installation

Have recently purchased and downloaded MPEG2 Playback Component. Still cannot read MPEG2 files.
After completing installation procedure, program stays as .dmg and does not appear as .app in Applications.
Normal ? If not - how do I get it into Applications

also purchased the mpeg-2 playback upgrade. I have a sony handycam. I can now playback video just fine but there is no audio.
Most Sony Handycams use the MPEG2/AC3 "muxed" compression format. AC3 audio is not natively compatible with QT and, even if you install an AC3 codec, is not playback supported as a multiplexed file. If you want to keep the original MPEG2 video and still want audio playback in an "muxed" file container, use the free MPEG Streamclip app to convert the MPEG2/AC3 file to an MPEG2/MP2 file. This approach is reasonably fast since it retains the original video and only re-multiplexes the AC3 audio as MPEG-1, Layer 2 audio which is playback compatible with QT with the QT MPEG-2 Playback component installed. If you want the file to be compatible with QT and mobile devices (e.g., iPod, iPhone, iPad, TV, etc.), then use MPEG Streamclip to convert the content directly to H.264/ACC content targeted for the device(s) desired. This approach takes more time since both the audio and the video data must be converted.

  • Free MPEG2 Playback Component download link for FCP users is broken?

Final Cut Pro and DVD Studio Pro and Final Cut Studio Users
If you received your MPEG-2 Playback Component as part of Final Cut Pro or DVD Studio Pro or Final Cut Studio, you can download the update with your Final Cut Pro or DVD Studio Pro or Final Cut Studio serial number. Download Update.
I'm trying to download the update to MPEG2 Playback component via the URL that is listed at the address above ( http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/download )
The links seems to be broken. I have received my Playback Component as a part of Final Cut Pro. Any suggestions on how to obtain the update?
    ibook g4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Well if the link stay broken ...call them...Nothing
    you can from here...sorry
Well, I actually e-mailed Apple Store support (since that's where I originally ordered the FCP crossgrade). They suggested that I post my question over here.
I don't feel comfortable about making a support call to USA from Finland... they might put me on hold for ages and it would end up costing a lot more than purchasing the component from Apple Store.
I think that the link has been broken for months already, although I'm not sure. Doesn't Apple have any kind of e-mail address to ask about this issue?

  • Do I still have the MPEG2 Playback Component?

I bought the QT MPEG-2 Playback Component about two years ago. I also bought QT Pro. I am currently in QT Pro 6.5. Using OS 10.3.9.
Does anyone know how I can find out if I still have the MPEG-2 playback component installed? I have reason to suspect the playback component is no longer functioning or installed, but I don't know where to look to find out.
I went to the Apple store>My Accounts. I saw it there, with a link to download it. When I tried the link I was taken to a page that said I should go to the Apple Store-My Accounts. No help there. Next day, I tried again, and now my account does not show anything.
    Help?
    noodle--head

It can be found in the HD/Library/QuickTime folder if installed for all users or in the "Home"/Library/QuickTime.
    Current version is 6.3

  • MPEG2 Playback Component, Does it work on ALL QT versions?

I'm running QT version 7.0.3 and OS 10.3.9. I just purchased the MPEG2 QT Playback Component and when I play files such as MPEG2 and VOB, it plays without audio. Does the MPEG2 PC work only with QT 6.4? Or can we make it work with 7.0.3?

I'm running QT version 7.0.3 and OS 10.3.9. I just
purchased the MPEG2 QT Playback Component and when I
play files such as MPEG2 and VOB, it plays without
    audio.
That's what it does - just plays back mpeg-2 encoded video. If you want to play both video and audio from DVDs use Apple's DVD Player or try the VLC media player at http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
The playback component gives Apple apps like FCP and DVD SP the ability to playback mpeg-2 video. It also works with MPEG StreamClip at http://www.alfanet.it/squared5/mpegstreamclip.html
Does the MPEG2 PC work only with QT 6.4? Or
can we make it work with 7.0.3?
There is a Windows version and a Mac version and they are NOT interchangable.
If you have the Mac version it works with Mac QT 6 and QT 7 (although you may need to reinstall it depending on how you upgraded to OS 10.4 and QT 7).
